they\u2019re bringing their volunteers, their food, and their plans,\u201d Lemieux said.\u201cWe have a nice building and a fully equipped kitchen.Even if we\u2019re closed I have to heat the place anyway, so if someone shows up with some volunteers and food I am happy to pay for the lighting and gas.\u201d La Chaudronée\u2019s annual Christmas dinner took place yesterday evening, and today is the last day this week that the non-profit organization will serve its usual breakfast and lunch meal.The kitchen, which typically serves two meals a day from Monday through Friday to between 50 and 100 people, will reopen again from the 28th to the 31st before closing on New Year\u2019s Day.The meal on Christmas Day is a lunch that has been coordinated by local CLSC worker Stéphanie Grenier.\u201cIt has been a few years that she\u2019s been doing that, but more in the downtown,\u201d Lemieux said.\u201cThis year she was looking for a new location so we\u2019re lending her the building for free.\u201d The following day, on the 26th, the doors of La Chaudronée will be open for a supper courtesy of the Institute of the Muslim and Arab World (IMAM) of the Eastern Townships.Abdelilah Hamdache, President of the IMAM said that their situation is similar to that of Grenier in that while this is the first year his organization will be working out of La Chaudronée, this will not be the first time that the organization offers this kind of service during the holiday season.For at least five years, he explained, the group has teamed up with a local Christian organization to serve the underprivileged of the community during the holidays but this year they felt like it made more sense to branch out on their own in the hope of reaching more people.Cont\u2019d on page 4 Bibeau settling in Cont\u2019d from page 1 GORDON LAMBIE Marie-Claude Bibeau, Member of Parliament for Compton-Stanstead and Minister of International Development and the Francophonie alongside her aide Jacqueline Belleau Though the work of settling into public office for the first time carries a large amount of responsibilities to begin with, Bibeau said that having been named Minister of International Affairs and the Francophonie not long after being elected certainly added to the experi-ence.\u201cI have learned that this is three jobs at the same time,\u201d she explained, \u201cbeing the MP of Compton-Stanstead, learning the parliamentary part of the job, and then the department itself.\u201d With all that on her plate, the Minister said that she has been very grateful for the support of her staff, and in particular the team who worked to help set up the office in Lennoxville.\u201cI rely a lot on my team,\u201d Bibeau said, praising her employees for their dedication and competence.\u201cAt the same time I am well connected to help deal with the important issues.\u201d With regard to the important issues, the Minister focused first and foremost on two items from her electoral campaign; request from local veteran André Bouchard on Monday night, the city of Sherbrooke will be considering the possibility of offering free parking to veterans.Drawing on a precedent set in communities like Cowansville, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, and Saint-Jerome, Bouchard made the simple suggestion, that those vehicles bearing the provin-cially issued veteran liscence plate be considered exempt from parking fees in the city.\u201cIt would be another step forward for Canadian military veterans,\u201d the veteran suggested, \u201crecognition of the sacrifices made so that others might live in peace.\u201d Bouchard argued that the criteria for getting one of the poppy-emblazoned plates are quite strict and based on legitimate recognition.He further suggested that any lost parking income would be more than made up for in the contributions to the community made by veterans drawn to the community by the honour and recognition.Council President Serge Paquin simply replied that the city would consider the suggestion, but Mayor Bernard Sévi-gny took the opportunity to highlight the importance that veterans hold in Sherbrooke.The Mayor shared that Sherbrooke\u2019s City Council has historically held recognition ceremonies for men and women from Sherbrooke who have served overseas.\u201cThe links between the people of Sherbrooke and the people serving overseas are very little Fred had a really rough start when he first arrived.Having just been surrendered by his owner, he was of course confused by this major change in his life.For a shy little dog like Fred, to suddenly find himself in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by people he didn\u2019t know was more than he could handle.Scared and unsettled, Fred spent his first week huddled in his basket hiding under his blanket.Needless to say, it was heartbreaking.Fred had to be coaxed out of his bed to eat and go outdoors.Once outside all he wanted to do was get back inside, back into his basket and back under his blanket.We did our best to help him adjust and could only hope that in time he would begin to settle in.It took some time but eventually Fred FRONTIER ANIMAL SOCIETY Fred did settle in and he has come a very long way since his arrival almost three weeks ago.He is still nervous and still very scared when taken outdoors but he now greets people with enthusiasm and loves to be fussed over and pet.Best of all he no longer hides in his bed.Fred is, however, still a work in progress and will need a loving and quiet home with an adopter who will continue to help build his confidence and make sure he feels safe and secure.He is a cuddler so we think he'll love curling up beside you on a comfy chair or couch.It won't take him long to bond and once he does he'll be a loving and devoted companion.Given how fearful he is when taken outdoors we think it is likely he was mostly an indoor dog.He is paper trained so his new family will have to take on the task of housetraining him.It can be done, he just needs to learn.Fred is an adorable mix of what we believe to be Chihuahua and Dachshund and is 6 year old.He is fine with cats but does not do well with large dogs.If you can be the Christmas season at Grace Christian and Connaught Homes Grace Christian and Connaught Homes kicked off the Christmas Season early this year with their Annual Flu Clinic.As their gift to their community over five hundred vaccinations were administered at no cost to community members, residents, volunteers and staff in both locations.Guests enjoyed a light atmosphere with refreshments and live music throughout the day.Connaught and Grace Christian Homes opened up their doors once more in the celebration of the season through their annual Christmas Tea and Sales.Staff and volunteers showcased their Christmas recipes producing dozens of holiday squares, cookies, tarts, cakes and other festive treats to serve and sell.Both homes combined were able to raise approximately eight hundred dollars to contribute to Resident Life at both Homes.The Christmas spirit continued to spread, as teams of elves from our staff vigorously worked raising the Christmas trees, hanging the lights, and bringing life to the Christmas villages.Celebration was in the air as the homes welcomed families and friends to rejoice in the season together the weekend of December 5th and 6th.As a community, Christmas carols were sung and holiday feasts were enjoyed in celebration of the spirit of Christmas.As Christmas Day approaches and the New Year comes in shortly behind, the leadership and staff of Grace Christian and Connaught Homes would like to express their profound gratitude to all those who have brought joy to our residents and staff this Christmas Season in many different ways! Province gives voice to parents, teachers, and principals on proposed new School Council By Scott Stevenson In Quebec, formal education in the youth sector is all about students, their parents, teachers, the schools that bring them together, and the principals that manage those schools.But the structures and decisions governing them come largely from a minister\u2019s office, his or her provincial bureaucracy, and the school boards in the middle.The Education reform bill tabled on December 4\u2014\u201cBill 86: An Act to modify the organization and governance of school boards to give schools a greater say in decision-making and ensure parents\u2019 presence within each school board\u2019s decision-making body\u201d\u2014is designed to do what its long title says, and to reduce government spending.It tweaks the overall system, overturns our existing councils of school board commissioners, and tries to increase school and parental involvement.The Record reviews the details of these changes here in the first of a two-part analysis, before the government organizes its limited consultation on the reform early in the new year.Students Stronger words on consulting students SCOTT STEVENSON Koralie Laroche, Level 5 student at the Polyvalente Louis-Saint-Laurent in East Angus: \u201cI\u2019ve heard that school boards have too much power.They should give more to schools.\u201d Students maintain two voting seats on their school\u2019s governing board.Those two student members of the governing board are chosen by their peers.Student involvement in overall direction of school board policies is strengthened: \u201cThe school board shall ensure that mechanisms are put in place to allow students to participate in defining some of the policy directions likely to concern them.In addition, the students must be consulted on the school board\u2019s commitment-to-success plan\u201d (Section 74 of Bill 86).Parents Parents\u2019 committee becomes all powerful General school board elections will no longer exist, removing the rights of parents and other community members to choose directly the people who govern school boards.Parents continue to have at least four seats on the governing board of their children\u2019s school.Those parent members are chosen by a general meeting of parents at the start of the school year.One of those parent members is also chosen at the general meeting to serve on the school board\u2019s parents\u2019 committee.That parents\u2019 committee will become very powerful under the proposed reform.In addition to being consulted by the school board on a list of important decisions, it chooses the 6 parent members of the new 16-member School Council replacing the existing Council of Commissioners.It also chooses the 6 community members of the new School Council if no general election of those community members is held.\u201cThe proposed reform includes certain demands that parents have been requesting for quite some time: the right to vote as a parent-commissioner on the Council of Commissioners, being involved with the evaluation of a school's Principal, more collaboration with parents on decisions, etc.,\u201d wrote Paul Laberge, Chair of the Eastern Townships School Board\u2019s Central Parents\u2019 Committee to me last week.\u201cOn these points, Bill 86 is on the right track.And for the more administrative changes, the Bill seems to allow for more decentralized decision making, and this is also very interesting.\u201d Teachers New representation in governing school boards As seen in recent news, teachers have the strong voice of their unions to represent them and effect change within the Education system.They used that voice successfully in recent negotiations with the government, in part over employment conditions but also very much on behalf of students, arguing strongly against increased class sizes and decreased attention for students with special needs.Teachers and non-teaching staff and professionals maintain at least four seats on their school\u2019s governing board, and will have two seats on the proposed new School Council, chosen by their peers.Schools Principals also get new voice on school council Schools have two key groups to run them\u2014principals and vice-principals, and a governing board\u2014but the real power comes from the school board and Education bureaucracy above.Principals don\u2019t hire their staff; the school board does.They manage a budget largely dictated by the school board, some details of which are adopted by the school\u2019s governing board.They are nonvoting members of their governing board.Their ability to speak is limited too.\u201cI am forwarding your request to Sharon Priest [Communications Consultant for the Eastern Townships School Board] as all interviews must go through the school board,\u201d wrote Galt Principal Peggy McCourt to me last week in response to my questions about Bill 86.But principals\u2019 voices will be in- creased under Bill 86 by having 2 seats on the proposed new 16-member School Council.They will be chosen by their peers.Governing boards have similarly limited powers, some of which change from approval to adoptive under Bill 86 (rules of conduct, lists of student materials, program of educational activities, antibullying plan, for example).Governing boards also have a slightly increased role in advising the school board on the criteria for choosing a principal, on participating in that selection, and on the principal\u2019s annual performance review.The most significant change proposed by Bill 86 is at the school board level, with an unelected School Council replacing the current Council of Commissioners, which also affects English-speaking education \u201cConcussion\u201d is a brief and wordless one: Just a few seconds, really, of a high school football team going through its drills.We don\u2019t know who these young, determined, helmeted kids are, but the message is sobering, especially if you\u2019re a parent: Concussion-related brain damage from football is not merely a threat to the professionals featured in the film.It\u2019s a threat to our football-playing kids, too.And that\u2019s a strong argument for any football lover (or parent of one) to see this film, which is anchored by a sensitive, understated performance by Will Smith as the real-life forensic pathologist who earned the NFL\u2019s animosity for shining a torch on the problem in Pittsburgh, home of the revered Steelers.The film, directed and written by Peter Landesman, may suffer from an overly simplistic, sometimes sermonizing script that could have used some sharp editing.But it\u2019s to be admired for bringing a truly important issue to the big screen \u2014 one we hate to hear about, perhaps, but isn\u2019t going to go away no matter how much we in this football-mad country try to avoid it.We first get to know Dr.Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian immigrant, in the autopsy room, where he has the strange habit of speaking to the corpses he\u2019s cutting into, asking them questions.He wants their help, in deducing how they died.This approach endears him to some colleagues while antagonizing others.One day, a beloved former Steeler ends up on Omalu\u2019s table: Mike Webster \u2014 \u201cIron Mike\u201d \u2014 who died at only 50 after his last years were plagued by dementia.Omalu wonders why a high-level athlete would experience such a rapid deterioration.Ignoring colleagues\u2019 pleas to leave the case alone, Omalu orders testing of Webster\u2019s brain, at his own expense.\u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m looking for,\u201d he tells his skeptical but supportive boss, Cyril Wecht (a wisecracking Albert Brooks.)
