[" Sherbrooke celebrates Canada Day Page 3 75 CENTS + TAXES Permaculture workshops in Cookshire Eating wild and loving it By Rachel Garber Cookshire In a sense, he’s a painter, and his palette is the Earth and all that is wild in it.His preferred colours are uncultivated plants and nut trees, especially edible ones.He strides across the farm in the rain, as a group of 15 try to keep up with him, juggling their brightly coloured umbrellas and pens and paper. He talks a mile a minute, and his words are a wealth of wisdom about the plants around him. He’s Yvan Perrault from near Joliette, where he farms his family’s ancestral farm with his brother. They specialize in nut trees, but more than that, Perrault specializes in a new way of working the earth. He says he’s a failed writer, but he’s certainly eloquent when talking about what is obviously his passion. His approach is as different as night and day from the industrial farming that is usually practiced today.“Industrial farms cultivate one kind of plant in huge fields, and in the fall they clear the fields totally, and plant something different the following year,” he observed, speaking in French. That’s not the way of permaculture. The idea is that plants live in a naturally diverse environment.Permaculture, as practiced by Perrault, focuses is on exploiting perennials and wild northern edible plants.Their fruits are harvested, but the plants live their natural life span. The farmer participates in the life cycle of nature rather than imposing an alien agenda.Perrault was in Cookshire for two days, leading a workshop on creating what he calls “forestry farms.” But he’s not talking about growing Christmas trees or producing lumber. He’s talking about modeling farming practices on the secret lives of forests and the many plants and animals they shelter.Permaculture, in other words.Cont’d on Page 4 mTHE» RECORD The voice of the Eastern Townships since 1897 PM#0040007682 Thursday, July 2, 2015 TOP SOIL FOR LAWN/GARDEN 14 yard3 Local delivery.$240.Home: 819-562-0803 (leave message) Hatley celebrates a rainy Canada Day parade ¦ / MATTHEW MCCULLY The damp weather didn’t deter Hatley from its annual parade celebrating Canada Day.By Matthew McCully Hatley Despite an ominous forecast, which ultimately delivered on its promise, thousands made their way to Hatley yesterday for the town’s 107th Canada Day parade. The rain did put a damper on a few events. The inflatable games were nixed, and the soapbox derby was cancelled, because of slippery road conditions. The parade, however, went on as usual.Among the most active floats in the parade was a group of hockey grandmas, sharing their Canadian dream of winning the Stanley Cup.They made a replica out of tin foil which they proudly passed around, while circling the float with hockey sticks, each one dressed in the jersey of their favourite Canadian hockey player.Horses were a prominent feature of the parade, with several teams in shiny ceremonial tack. The Record bumped into one parade goer, who was back at the parade for the first time in 60 years.Linda Pellerin Cass-Jones moved away from Hatley after her grandmother passed away. Her last time at the parade was when she was eight-years-old.“I’m just blown away,” Cass-Jones said, unaware the extent to which the parade had been growing over the years.“There were around 100 people the last time I was here,” she said, looking at the mass of people who braved the rain, gathered on the Commons.Cass-Jones’ pointed to the old schoolhouse across the lawn, now the community centre, saying that her fa- ther was a student there. She shared a story about her father having a teacher who was familiar with his handwriting throughout his school career. When it came time to graduate, he wrote his provincial exams, and they were sent to Quebec City for marking, but were immediately returned. It seems no one other than her dad’s Hatley teacher could decipher his handwriting.Cass-Jones’ grandmother, Maude Gage Pellerin, was a writer for The Record years ago, and also published a small historical volume, “the Story of Hatley.” With a strong connection to the, Cass-Jones was happy to be back among friends in Hatley, regardless of the rain. She was with three generations of family to celebrate Canada Day in the Townships.See more photos on Page 5 "THE" RECORD ™0NUNE The Record online is new and improved It is more up to date and compatible with the new modern devices To subscribe, go to www.sherbrookerecord.com, click on e-dition and follow the simple instructions. For information or assistance call 819-569-9528 billing@sherbrookerecord.com SPECIAL OFFER for Record print subscribers: Receive a full year’s subscription to the online edition for only $5 with every new 12 month print subscription or renewal.Contact the office directly to take advantage of this offer. C’mon Inside,’ and that is the last time I trust those cousins, believe you me, with all that hand-rubbing, which, again, really weirds me out!” Unfortunately, it turns out I have used both types of relative pronouns in a poorly constructed sentence, which was a run-on sentence to boot.Oops! There’s an- other one! Look: if you want a hint, there’s usually a comma before “which” but not before “that.” I swear that’s all I know! When do I use “its” versus “it’s”?Is this a joke?Marvin, is that you?You know I don’t appreciate your mon-keyshines.I’m trying to work here. You don’t see me coming down to the suspender factory and asking you whether belts are the devil’s tool, do you?Nobody has time for such obvious questions.Especially with our pants falling down all the time. But if you must know - and, quite frankly, I’m a bit appalled you don’t -the trick is to replace the “big, puzzling three-letter word” (yes, that’s sarcasm, Marvin!) with “it is.” If the phrase still makes sense, use “it’s”; if not, use “its.” For example, “It’s [it is] high time people got this straight because this mistake has been causing language to lose its [not it is] mojo for far too long, and, speaking of long, someone should tell this guy he would do a better job explaining these concepts if he were to make the sample sentences shorter.” Ooo! Ooo! Do subjunctive mood next! Really? We’re struggling with “its” and “it’s” and you want to jump to subjunctive?Ready you are not, young Sky-walker.No, really, we got this.Fine.The subjunctive mood is used when something is wishful thinking or not factual, like my passport photo, the one that looks uncannily like Hugh Grant circa 1997, because it is.You’ll often see the word “if’ at the start of a subjunctive sentence, i.e.“If I were Hugh Grant, I would make another movie with that adorable Sandra Bullock, especially now that I (Hugh) am prettier.” You’ll note that the verb is “were” instead of “was,” which is a clue to the subjunctive, because I am not Hugh Grant, though your confusion delights me.But later in the sentence, we say “I (Hugh) am prettier,” using the indicative mood, because my (Hugh’s) prettiness is indisputable. Here’s another example, “I would recommend that Hugh Grant get Botox, because, even though Hollywood is especially cruel to older actresses, he’s certainly no Paul Rudd.” See?“Get” instead of “gets” because it’s something hoped for, a potential reality, and an expensive proposition given the cost of Botox these days.No prepositions at the end of sentences, right?Really? We’re still struggling with this?In a world where suddenly it’s okay to wear socks with sports sandals, we’re worried about what should or should not end a sentence? Some random rule that someone invented hundreds of years ago and we still cower before it?They might as well have said, “Never end a sentence with the word ‘toad’ because toads are ugly.” This is like the “rule” that if you mix red wine and white you’ll get a hangover. No! If you mix red wine and white, it probably means you drank all the red wine in the house but you want to keep on dr inkin’ on, so bring on the white, and in the end you've simply drunk too much, dummy! Trust me.If your sentence sounds good ending in a preposition, go for it.And that’s all I’m going to talk about.Scotstown s having a Ceilidh The Ceilidh Society of Scotstown will be holding birthday cake. The Delice des Nations grocery store once again prepared an enormous Canada Day cake.By Gordon Lambie Tlhough the weather outside was cold and miserable at Sherbrooke’s Jacques-Cartier Park on Wednesday afternoon, a festive and patriotic spirit could still be found at the city’s annual Canada Day celebrations.“We were really happy to have added our children’s show in the tent this morning, given that the weather was not on our side,” said Julie Laplante, president of the Canada Day organizing committee, pointing out that the weather meant a cancellation of the inflatable games that would otherwise entertained children for most of the day.“Other than the rain I would say today is going very well.” While enthusiasm for activities taking place outside was dampened, sheltered events such as the concert performed by the L’Harmonie de L’Estrie orchestra and the afternoon’s citizenship ceremony were quite well attended.“Today is a rainy day,” said Sherbrooke MNA Luc Fortin, “but we have sunshine in our hearts because today is a day not only of celebration, but of pride.” 38 people from 24 different home-countries were granted citizenship as a part of the annual public ceremony.Though the event was host to a vast cross-section of local politicians and political candidates, many of whom opted to speak, it was the presentation of Patrick Rahamily, Sherbrooke businessman and Honorary President of the Canada Day festivities, that struck closest to the spirit of the day, as he shared with the crowd his own experiences as a new Canadian.“I spent the first 28 years of my life in Madagascar, living under very difficult and precarious circumstances,” Rahamily said.“Today is a day that will stand out for the rest of your life.It symbolizes the realization of a dream, the start of better days, and a new beginning.” Calling Canada a certain, stable, peaceful, and safe country, the honorary president emphasized that the great rights, freedoms, and opportunities the country grants its citizens come hand in hand with the responsibility to be upstanding examples of the Canadian way of life.“Your success is now in your hands,” Rahamily said.“Keep a positive and determined attitude every day, consider Canada to be your country, and be proud of being Canadian.” Speeches welcoming the new Canadians were also made by Fortin as well as Sherbrooke MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault, Mayor Bernard Sévigny, and citizenship judge Myriam Taschereau. The Quebec nationalist group, Les Insoumis, made an appearance at the site of the citizenship ceremony as well, but were quickly escorted out of the park by Sherbrooke Police. While being escorted out one member of the small group of demonstrators loudly exclaimed that they had simply come to welcome the newcomers to Quebec in French, and that their right to free expression was being violated.Fortin made reference to the group in his comments after the citizenship ceremony had been completed, telling the crowd that while he disagrees with the positions taken by Les Insoumis, which include a rejection of Islam and a fierce opposition to English signage, he is proud to live in a country where people are able to voice different opinions freely and publicly.“Some people will say that we must make a choice, but I think there is no choice to be made,” he said.“There is no contradiction between our pride in being Québécois and our pride in being Canadian.” The citizenship ceremony was followed by a posthumous honouring of former Canada Day committee president Jacques Dezainde, and the serving of very generous portions of an enormous Canada Day cake prepared, as usual, by the Delice des Nations grocery store.A clearing in the rainy weather later in the day laid the way for the evening’s outdoor concert by the Groupe Show and the fireworks display.Bertrand Gosselin speaks at the citizenship ceremony.MNAs Karine Vallières (left) and Luc Fortin share a moment at the Sherbrooke citizenship ceremony.Sherbrooke MP Pierre-Luc “Discovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different.” To do well at the bridge table, you must think the right thought at the correct moment.Your success rate will rise if you pause to consider the alternatives. That — surprise, surprise — is relevant in today’s deal.Look at the North and East hands.East is defending against three spades. After West leads the heart king, how should East plan to defeat the contract?A modern duplicate player sitting West would respond with a pre-emptive three hearts, showing four trumps but limited high-card power. With game-invitational or better values, he would make a two-spade cue-bid raise — exactly as North did with his three-heart cue-bid.South, with a weakish balanced hand, signed off in three spades. For East, holding the heart ace, it looks obvious to encourage a heart continuation by signaling with his nine. But first he should ask from where his side might get five tricks. There are only two North 07-02-15 4 K 9 7 4 V 6 5 ? A 10 8 3 * K 6 5 West East 4 J 2 4 6 3 y K Q 7 4 y A 9 8 3 2 ? 9764 ?J 5 * 10 83 * A Q J 2 South 4 A Q 10 8 5 y J 10 in clubs. However, to do that, West will have to lead clubs twice through dummy’s king. So, at trick one, East must discourage by dropping his heart two. Then, as you can see, if West shifts to the club three, the defenders can triumph.East wins with his club j ack and plays a low heart to his partner’s queen. Then another club lead gives East-West the first five tricks.CROSSWORD Across
