[" Brome County NEW Tuesday, June 30, 2015 MDDELCC gives TBL go-ahead for Jolibourg well By Ann Davidson It’s been a tough and long go with numerous issues around TBL’s water supply over the past years but finally there is a breakthrough in getting it resolved.On Monday, June 15, Quebec’s Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques (MDDELCC) du Québec authorized the insertion of a coil into Jolibourg Well.With shovel and coil already stationed at the site, insertion of the coil will begin this week under the supervision of the town engineer Carl Fiset and director of public works Robert Daniel.The coil is a device that will serve to regulate the necessary chlorine levels in the water that will prevent future contamination.With Jolibourg well back in operation it will provide an additional 640 litres per minute.Aside from the headaches surrounding alleged past poor management of public works and the inherited challenges related to contaminated water from that specific source of water, the overall restricted availability to the potable water supply, the added costs Thinking of selling.Please call last summer, the municipality had not been able to prove that it can meet the immediate demand.Even though during the peak time last summer TBL did not have to prevail upon outside sources for water, it required citizens to be prudent with their use.Until the town can prove that it can supply the demand, it cannot expand in terms of housing and potential business development.Although the current TBL administration has made the water supply its top priority in terms of ameliorating the problems, it has taken much criticism for a situation that, not only did it inherit, has ostensibly been at the control centre of the Quebec government.“What citizens have not understood is that there has been a specific protocol Cont’d on page 5 ANN DAVIDSON Ï* ¦ ' : s With shovel and coils titled the Magic of Permaculture will shed some light on the basics of permaculture gardening.Held at 14 chemin des Pruniers in Mansonville, this atelier will teach participants how to work with rather than against nature.In addition, gardeners will be instructed on how to see their garden as a holistic whole rather than as separate units merged into one.The workshop will culminate in a “Magic Model,” whereby participants will build their very own miniature model, incorporating permacultural principles of design.Soblcowialc has toiled with soil for years, having groomed his Miracle Farm in Cazaville, Quebec for six years.This largest permaculture fruit orchard in Eastern North America has produced apples, pears, raspberries, gooseberries, currants, and watermelons, not interested in land workshop, but you don’t want to fork out cash?Look no further: the new street festival Arts Alive has you covered.Running from the afternoon of July 3 to the evening of July 5, the festival is expected to lure visitors into boutiques, where they will discover local art, take part in workshops, and generally celebrate the benefits of an artistic community.Here are a number of events participants can look forward to.Ralph Steiner will host a workshop on land art at the Coldbroolc walking path, by Star Cafe.Using materials such as branches, moss, leaves, and stones, Steiner will create and decorate the path which will become a centerpiece of the “Art Crawl” scavenger hunt which will take place throughout the town.Participants can hone in their music-writing skills by joining Mike Goudreau.At Auberge Knowlton, Goudreau will talk about his take on songwriting, publishing and song licensing.In addition, Goudreau will perform a couple songs from his repertoire to differentiate between musical genres and styles.Following that, a question period will be held as well as audio examples of some of his recordings that were inserted in various TV shows.On the same day, Rugge Thomson will provide insights into the world of filmmaking.Held at the Knowlton Pub, the workshop will focus on the technical elements of filmmaking while addressing techniques such as proper exposure, basic lighting, composition, and sound acquisition.Participants will be able to make a short film that will be aired at the festival itself as the preshow to Celtic Rhythms with Dave Gossage and Friends on Saturday night.Ever wanted to learn more about hip hop?Now you can by taking part in Mylène Tondreau’s workshop on July 3.Held at the Knowlton United Church, this workshop is open to kids aged eight years old and up who will learn the basics of the dance.Tondreau’s CV is hardly minimal: she has opened up her own dance school in Cowansville and has already starred in the popular TV program So You Think You Can Dance at the age of 26.Other workshops teach stepdancing, watercoloring and improv laughter.Various treats include a Louise Penny brunch and trivia, concerts by Amos Joannides, the Once, Jessie & Juliana, not to mention the Durham County Poets outdoor concert as well as Celtic Rhythms with Dave Gossage and friends.It all In the last survey I was asked a good number of question that I could not answer.The survey was aimed largely at residents of Knowlton and did not concern me.Unless the present survey is held in two parts divided between residents of Knowlton and those outside Knowlton in proportion to the actual populations of the two it will in no sense be fair or representative.I agree with Peter Wade that a normal register and referendum would be followed.And again, the two parts of the township should be done separately.Concerning the pool itself and it’s $300,000 annual operating cost which we will all pay for, has anyone considered the possibility that for that price a shuttle bus service could be provided perhaps twice a week or more?Perhaps a small charge could be made and several pickup points provided.In any case, the people I have talked to have no intention of using a pool in Knowlton.Arthur Y.Smith Fulford Will you commit to a register on pool issue?Open letter to Mayor Burcombe: Here we go again.Mayor Burcombe, you are treading into very murky waters with your indoor pool project and you are about to drown us all into unsustainable, unneeded and unwarranted debt.Where is the town’s research analysis report which includes demographic information necessary to appropriately evaluate Town of Brome Lake’s composition, including population, age distrib- ution, income, weather analysis and economic considerations that could affect this multi-million dollar indoor pool project’s viability?Where is the town’s aquatic analysis report and the appropriate toolbox of aquatic facility options which validates that there is actually a sufficient need and demand for this project?Where are the hard construction costs and hard annual maintenance cost figures broken down, which includes “soft” costs, such as professional fees, survey, geo-technical report, document reproduction, advertisement for bids and all anticipated expenses related to the administration of this project?TBL must have the sum of these two cost figures nailed down firmly and presented in a professional and transparent fashion so that residents can make an informed decision.Thus far, residents have only been supplied with a misleading, incomplete, inaccurate, and one-sided glossy political brochure from you, along with a very questionable council engineered and self-serving CROP poll.Will you and this council commit to holding a register and/or a town referendum on this multi-million dollar project?If not, why not?Larry Ingold Knowlton M-V’s Fukushima thankful for Charles Bury Award The Yamaska Merry Gentlemen sing for Nepal Tania lee Journeau presents Takeshi Fukushima with The Record’s Charles Bury scholarship.Dear Mrs.McCully: Thank you so much for selecting me as the recipient of The Record’s Charles Bury Award.It is an honour to have been chosen from all the eligible graduates for this generous prize.I am humbled to have been recognized for my years of hard work.You have my utmost gratitude.I intend to study literature at Dawson College and, eventually, at the university level.This is a risky and uncertain path to travel, but it is also my passion; I am sure that with my intelligence, creativity, and dedication, I will find success.You have placed your trust in me after all; I have no intention of letting you down.Let me thank you again for your generosity.Your financial support is necessary for me to focus on my writing and education, rather than to worry about rent, tuition, and the purchase of food and books.I promise to live up to your expectations.Sincerely, Takeshi Fukushima COURTESY OF MASSEY-VANIER HIGH SCHOOL Brome County NEWS _ 5-b Victoria St., Knowlton, Quebec, JOE 1V0 Tel: (450) 242-1188 Fax: (450) 243-5155 Established May 1991 Published weekly by RECORD 1195 Galt E„ Sherbrooke, Quebec, JIG 1Y7 fax: (819) 569-3945 E-mail: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com website: www.sherbrookerecord.com Sharon McCully Publisher.(819) 569-6345 Stephen Blake Editor .(819) 569-6345 Geneviève Beaudin Secretary.(450) 242-1188 Jesse Bryant Advertising.(450) 242-1188 CIRCULATION Distributed to all Record subscribers every Tuesday as an insert, and to households and businesses in Abercorn, Bedford, Brigham, Brome, Bromont, Cowansville, East Farnham, Foster, Fulford, Knowlton (Brome Lake), Sutton, Bolton Centre, West Brome.The Record was founded on February 7, 1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.Canadian Publications Mail Service Product Agreement No.0479675.Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA \\.¦ .- f.By Shirley Maynes Beakes etired past minister of Creek United Church, Reverend Dr.Burn Turdon, organized and led the “Ya- BCN RATES & DEADLINES COMMUNITY CALENDAR Brome County News Community Calendar is reserved for non-profit organizations only.Deadline is noon on Fridays.Must be pre-paid.Up to 40 words: $8, 41-70 words: $12, 71-100 words: $15, all prices include taxes.Special rates: $2 off for 2 insertions, 1 BCN and 1 in the Friday Record “What’s On” section.Please forward notices to 5-b Victoria St., Knowlton, QC JOE 1V0, email: bcnnews@qc.aibn.com, or fax: (450) 243-5155.Visa and Mastercard accepted.maska Merry Gentlemen” in concert at the Creek United Church on June 14.Special guest, tenor, Pascal Gauthier of Waterloo, brought the audience to their feet with his rendition of “Alleluia.” A “free will offering” certainly showed the enthusiasm and appreciation of those in attendance.The amount collected of $800 will be sent to the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund.Rev.Burn, with his energy, love of the community, and faith, is an inspiration to all.Thank you for a wonderful program of talented vocals. BROME COUNTY NEWS Tuesday, June 30, 2015 • page 5 BCN Lfofyü: ELEGANT LIVING EDITION La Dolce Vitae Outdoor living spaces Tayna Bardati The time has come to get out there and create living spaces outdoors.This “outdooring” trend has gain popularity since it allows us to increase our living space even if it is only for a few months out of the year and allow us to connect with nature without compromising our comfort.Here are my tips on how to create outdoor living spaces.Porch life On any porch of your house, you can create a relaxing space with just a comfy chair or a swing with exterior cushions, mood lighting with vintage candles or lanterns, and some accessories with character.Add an outdoor carpet and you created an outdoor living room, great for early morning coffee or evenings by candlelight.Patio fix For the plain concrete slab patios, my suggestion is to add potted plants.Greenery is the simplest way to add life to a drab stone pad.If your patio is next to your house's exterior wall, use this to your advantage.Hang mirrors or a trellis on this wall and you instantly transformed the space.You can use this exterior wall as you would an interior wall; place a console table for convenience.You can even create a wall of plants by building a vertical garden up the wall and planting herbs, strawberries, or other plants that require less dirt.Gravel yard You don't have a defined space in your backyard?Use fine gravel and contour the space with unique paver stones.Use colorful furniture such as a turquoise metal dinette set or a yellow patio table with matching chairs to bring character to your gray space.Add cushions and potted flowers and a little corner of paradise awaits you.BBQ_ heaven You have a deck with your patio table and chair and your BBQ_in one corner.Everything looks too plain and lonely.My suggestion is to use your deck to beef up this space.Add to your BBQspace side walls with counter space; bring an outdoor sink into play if you can.I recommend building with treated wood or using metal cabinets.Add an undercounter mini-fridge and you instantly create an outdoor kitchen.Back of the garden retreat If you have a wilder backyard, clear out a space under a shady tree to create a hidden retreat.Seed grass and keep it low, or add flagstones with grass around the stones.By adding a two-seat bench or a small table with two chairs, you just created a romantic getaway to enjoy with your loved one Front yard appeal There is no good reason why you can- not use your front yard to maximize your outside living space.If your yard permits it, carve out an area next to your front walkway, build a privacy fence and lay down a brick pad.Add some outdoor sitting and voila! Here is another great space to drink your morning coffee and enjoy the neighborhood with a front-row seat.Fire circle If your town allows it, create an outdoor fireplace or fire pit.Create this space with more than a few people in mind since you might want to invite family and friends.The surface can be made of anything you wish, rock screening, crushed stone, pavers, or even keep it grass.As long as it is level, the space will appeal to all.Keep the fire pit wall low enough that you can still see the fire if sitting.- Tayna Bardati is an Interior Designer and Home Staging Expert in Bromont (www.creationstayna.com), follow her on Facebook @ Creations Tayna Home Staging, or on twitter #deco21girl.Permaculture Cont’d from page 1 squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, beans, peppers, rhubarb, and peas.For more information on Miracle Farm, visit the website www.miracle.farm.Whether you are a connoisseur of permaculture design or have heard of this concept for the very first time, the workshop promises to guide gardeners to a better and more nuanced understanding of what gardening and taking care of our earth means.Permaculture gardening can be broadly defined as the use of patterns and designs observed in natural ecosystems.Coined by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren back in 1978, the term initially referred to “permanent agriculture” but was later expanded to englobe the notion of “permanent culture.” In his book, Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability, Holmgren outlined 12 fundamental When you have muscular dystrophy your muscles say stop,but your mind says go We provide hope and support to people with neuromuscular disorders Jolibourg well steps.These include: observing and interacting, catching and storing energy, obtaining a yield, applying self-regulation, using and revaluing renewable sources, producing no waste, designing from patterns to details, integrating over segregating, using smaller and slower solutions, using and valuing diversity, using edges and valuing the marginal, and finally creatively using and responding to change.Holmgren’s partner Cont’d from page 1 that we have had to follow.Delays have been the result ol us having to respond to specific questions presented over many months by the ministry,” explained Mayor Richard Bur-combe.“Now that the Jolibourg well is finally being resolved, we are looking forward to the installation of a large filtration gallery at the Bailey Well in West Bolton and hoping that the MDDELCC will allow us to get that done by mid-autumn.” Mollison probably described the modus operandi best: “Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labour; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treat- ing any area as a single product system.” Held at Abbondanza farm, the workshop will take place from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m., including a garden lunch.Tickets come at $85.For more information, visit the website www.ab-bondanzafarm.com or call 450-292-0732. page 6 Tuesday, June 30, 2015 -Brome County News- New Sutton cycling club plans outings every weekend Sutton v vW SUTTON CLUB DE VÉLO - .;
