applied to the social sciences, no longer commands the respect it once did, it is easy to ignore - or dismiss - the evidence gathered in that fashion, but we do so at a peril now becoming perilously intense.Whether the subject is the environment, demographics, or crime, we have reached a point where evidence based conclusions are stymied by tradition, orthodoxy, or, the greatest threat of all, common sense. The term “common sense” is generally invoked to defend or promote ideas that can’t be supported by any meaningful measure. For example, “common sense” tells us that punishing crimes severely will “naturally” result in a decline in illegal behaviour, while a “soft” approach like rehabilitation serves only to coddle the wrongdoers among us and imperil the safety of law-abiding citizens.Scientifically, neither of these conclusions can be defended statistically, and in fact, the opposite of both these statements are demonstrably clear.Harsher penalties, which come at great expense, do not reduce the frequency of offenses and rehabilitation programs almost universally do, at least among those fortunate enough to access them. Those of us who follow politics have no trouble identifying those areas in which our current governments tend to ignore the evidence science can provide.Science tells us quite unambiguously that human activity is having a powerful impact on the planet’s climate. While recent aberrations in our typical weather patterns may not yet prove this truth conclusively — weird weather hap- pens all the time, after all, the severity of recent “weirdness,” and the underlying trend, should at least give us food for thought, if not for action. But action, after all, is what is required — and urgently at that. For as long as there has been human history, our species has thrived though its ability to alter the environment around us.The development of farming led to a staggeringly rapid increase in human food supply, the explosion of our numbers, and allowed us to cease our precarious hunting and gathering to produce relatively predictable and dependable crops.More importantly, it allowed us to settle down in permanent, défendable communities capable of embracing and managing large numbers of people.Civilization as we define it depends upon surplus food, a division of labour allowing specialization, and, to our dismay, politics.Since then, our ingenuity and intelligence have allowed us to take advantage of the world’s resources in remarkable ways, providing comfort, security, wealth, and luxury.Since the Industrial Revolution, our impact upon the world around us has not only accumulated, but has exploded exponentially, and dangerously, to the point where science is telling us what we do not want to know: we are doing irreparable damage to that which we need most to survive. The question we need to ask at some point — for future historians surely will — is why.The answer, sadly, is that while we have developed the technology and willingness to damage our environment beyond repair, we have yet to demonstrate the determination to save it, despite having the technology at least, to make a start. There is an answer, of course, albeit a simple one.We are greedy, rapacious creatures who, although quite capable of understanding that which we do, are equally capable of denying it when our immediate personal interests so require. We know that fossil fuels are wrecking havoc on global temperatures, and we know that this warming will have incontrovertible effects. The ice caps will melt and the oceans will rise, submerging the habitats of several hundred millions of people. We know that those displaced will not make things easy on the rest of us by simply lying down to die and that they will exert intense pressure on the already inhabited areas nearby.Since disputes over land have stimulated warfare since before we even came down from the trees, there is no reason to believe things will be any different as the pressures increase, as they surely must, when more and more people compete for less and less usable land, resources, and water. The damage will not stop here, of course, as rising temperatures and over-exploitation are making our oceans less and less capable of maintaining the wild diversity of life that has kept our species alive for as long as we can remember. In addition, warming temperatures are also destroying a global system of glaciers that maintains the world’s great rivers and upon which we depend for a frightening amount of our agriculture and husbandry. These are not crystal ball predictions of course, as it is the epitome of hubris for us to imagine we can know all the variables, but the trend is incontestable and the proof is descending upon us.Perhaps the clearest example of humankind’s ability to ignore the obvious is unfolding before our eyes in the great state of California — poster child for the American Dream. In this idyllic place, human folly is on open display. Most of us forget that California was, until very recently, a semi-arid place completely incapable of supporting the 40 million souls who now cavort there. To counter this natural fact, the state has been diverting water from hundreds of miles away in a desperate attempt to grow thirsty, but profitable, crops. This process has been so successful that the state has been able to turn desert into vineyard and make itself the source of most of the vegetables we find in our grocery stores. This environmental Ponzi scheme, however, is about to unravel as the water is no longer there. It has been used to grow almonds, pistachios, and alfalfa — and to fill the hundreds of thousands of swimming pools without which the population cannot seem to live. They’re going to have to learn, however, just as we are going to have to learn to cope with the dramatic and unavoidable increase in our food prices as the chickens come home to roost.Food prices, however, may be the least of our worries. It is extremely unlikely that our southern neighbours will go down without a fight, and like all thirsty peoples before them, they will seek out other sources of water and they won’t have to look far. They won’t have to go to war to get it either, as already our governments seem willing to hand over this resource to private entities to sell to the highest bidder who won’t, by the way, be us.One would think that this would be a time where “common sense” should be telling us we have to change. The equation is quite simple. We live in a world with limited land and resources and each of these is being depleted at an increasing rate. Our numbers are growing dramatically, the land upon which we can live is decreasing, and our individual consumption rate is expanding exponentially. In all areas, we are doing precisely the opposite of what is required and we intend, apparently, to keep on doing so, leaving to our descendants to deal with our foolishness.Where’s our “common sense” now?RECORD 1195 Galt East, Sherbrooke, Quebec Sherbrooke Abenakis senior men’s rugby team is no exception. As the team prepares for its ascension to Division 1 after capturing the provincial Division 2 championship last year, coach Charles Goode mentioned four players who made a difference.Experience is always a key factor in any winning program and blind side flanker Nic Maheu is beginning his 10th season with the Abenakis. The 31-year-old University of Sherbrooke graduate who balances family, work and rugby, has been described by Goode as the rock upon which the teambuilds its defence, especially when the ball is close to their own line.Maheu is the hardest tackier on the team and has led the club in turnovers during the last three seasons. While Maheu provides the club with great experience Nicolas Charlton, Philippe Menard and Nicolas Alexandre represent the youth that is vital to a team’s continuity.Charlton can play scrum half or fly half and is the team’s playmaker. He leads offensive systems and defensive organization and is the current Bishop’s captain and was a nominee for university player of the year, finish tied for first in scoring in the conference in 2014.“Despite his young age, Nic has been with the club since his days at U-16 and U-18 levels which saw him advance through rugby Quebec’s elite youth levels.” Goode said.“Nic had a great season last year with the club, leading the team in last year’s final versus Kingston.” The 22-year-old Menard is in his third year with club and is the team’s principal jumper in lineouts and one of the go-to ball carriers in the squad. An ETS engineering student and varsity rugby player, the Sherbrooke native has chosen to pursue his internship this summer in the region to stay close to his club and family.“One of the fastest men in the squad, Phil should continue to build on his 2013 Rookie of the Year award,” Goode said.Alexandre is a 21-year-old flyhalf/full-back who spent time playing in France last season. The Martinique native is a former BU player who was called up to the Quebec Senior 7s team this year and helped them to a runner -p spot in the elite divisions of the New York and Las Vegas tournaments.“Nic is a talented kicker, punting and points, and has worked very hard on his speed and size,” Goode said.“He has also been with the club since his U-16 days, and has played alongside Nic Charlton at club, elite and university level over the past six years.” Sherbrooke Expos announce home slate Record Staff Sherbrooke The Sherbrooke Expos No other month makes a greater change in the appearance of the outdoor. The last of the ice and snow that may have been left on the ground through March usually disappears under April’s mingled rain and sunshine.Linda Grenon, President, called the meeting to order prior to the midday meal. She welcomed all, including the two guests, then proceeded with a few announcements of interest. She expressed great appreciation to the efforts put in by the team working for the Massawippi Valley Health Centre clinic in Ayer’s Cliff due to open April 13.She mentioned that Dorothy Gillick is recuperating at home having experienced a fall on Easter Sunday. She further mentioned the passing of Faye Dustin (Ticehurst) and expressed her sympathies to Wynn and family on behalf of the Club.Faye will be missed, her kind nature and willingness to give and do for others did not go unnoticed.Cards signed by all members will be mailed to Dorothy and Wynn.May they find strength in knowing that the thoughts of others are with them.Rev.Barbara Wintle offered the Grace, thereafter, all enjoyed the dinner of scalloped potatoes, ham with pineapple, vegetables, coleslaw, pickled beets, crusty bread, birthday cake with ice cream. The afternoon activity was surely a hit with a sugar-on-snow party.Melvin Dustin prepared the sugar with help from Phyllis and others. The homemade doughnuts by Jean Cass was an added treat.Linda, President, once again expressed thanks to her team of helpers, Melvin, Phyllis, the clean up volunteers, Jean for the birthday cake and doughnuts, and the decorating committee who did a fine job in keeping with the Easter theme.Even before the holiday had its religious meaning, people greeted spring with celebrations.Door prizes went to Sandra Dezan, John Dawson, Karen Ross, Royce Martin, Norma MacKinnon, Melvin Dustin, Marilyn Cass, Jackie Tilton, Elizabeth Redpath, Casey Vriesendorp and Lise Beauvais. The half and half drawings went to Norman Wintle, Lise Beauvais and Linda Grenon.Ernestine Whipple won the special prize of the Easter Lily, for her impressive Easter attire.April birthdays were acknowledged in song with Ernestine on piano.Next meeting will be on May 5, 2015 at the vestry.Submitted by Leta Dustin, Secretary TODAYS MOON: Between new moon (April 18) and first quarter moon (April 25).MS lives here. There’s one thing you can predict in life.MS makes life unpredictable.Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada 1-800-268-7582 www.mssociety.ca The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Wednesday, April 22, 2015 Page 9 Your Birthday WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 2015 Helping others will put you in the spotlight. The agencies or groups you join will help you make a connection to someone searching for the same thing as you.A partnership will help you reach your goals.Expect to receive positive attention and professional benefits.TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — Look for an artistic outlet.Home decorating or renovations will turn out well, as long as you stick to a strict budget.Don’t make decisions for others, or you will face opposition.GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — Your emotional state will discourage personal discussions with others. You would be best off delving into expressive hobbies.Quietly doing something you enjoy will help calm your nerves.CANCER (June 21-July 22) — Don’t make important decisions.Confusion and uncertainty will prevail, making it difficult to do the right thing.Exposing too much personal information will put you in a vulnerable position.LEO (July 23-Aug.22) — A new friendship will blossom. You have a lot to offer, but it’s important not to provoke the jealousy of someone close to you.VIRGO (Aug.23-Sept.22) — Focus on a way to increase your income.Delve into work and money matters so that you have a perfect sense of where you sit financially. You have what it takes to advance.LIBRA (Sept.23-Oct.23) — Don’t allow the actions or words of others to have a negative effect on you.Relatives or coworkers will be hard to get along with. You are best off working alone.SCORPIO (Oct.24-Nov.22) — Personal matters will require your undivided attention. You will need to take on extra responsibilities, so be prepared to step up and do what’s necessary.SAGITTARIUS (Nov.23-Dec.21) -Moderation is key.You can make financial gains, but only if you are logical, not emotional.Someone else’s plan will not be in your best interests.Do your research before signing a contract.CAPRICORN (Dec.22-Jan.19) -
