According to Leigh Hortop of the Lennoxville and District Community Aid, this past Tuesday’s public consultation on how to fill the void left behind by the end of the Lennoxville Golden Age Club was productive, even if only a small group showed up.“There was lots of feedback and lots of ideas,” she said, explaining that those who were in attendance were given individual surveys, followed by a small group discussion which led to a wider group discussion afterward. This model, Hortop explained, gave people time to formulate their own thoughts while also building ideas together as a group.CONT’D ON PAGE 5 By Matthew McCully On Sunday, Oct.27 Lennoxville United Church will hold a special service called You Are Not Alone: A Service for Mental Health. The purpose of the service is to learn about and reflect on the realities of mental illness.According to Reverend Linda Buchanan, the service will be ecumenical and inter-religious.“Everyone needs to be cared for, and CONT’D ON PAGE 3 Reviewed by James Wilson ‘The Sea’ by Irish novelist John Banville won the 2005 Booker prize in a split decision, much to the chagrin of one of the judges, the literary editor of The Independent, who publicly called its selection “possibly the most perverse decision in the history of the award.” This assessment may have had less to do with the book itself, than with book sales, which tend to rise sharply when popular winners are announced; another prominent critic grumped, ‘The Sea’ “won’t do the Booker’s reputation much good.” The premise of ‘The Sea’ is admittedly unpleasant: the narrator/protagonist, Max Morden, an aging art critic, is grieving the death of his wife Anna to cancer.Though the awful diagnosis and her year-long decline and death are treated in the novel, sometimes graphically, Anna and her fate are completely absent from most of the work.In fact, she is already dead at the opening, and evoked only through flashback. The novel’s focus is Max, his response to Anna’s death, and his attempt to come to terms with it.Part of that attempt is his decision to leave the family home in the city and rent a room in a boardinghouse by the sea, the same house that was, 50 years earlier, rented by the Grace family, whose lives intertwined with the young Max’s.This is no coincidence: ‘The Sea’ is a novel as much about memory as about death and bereavement. For Max, memory is an antidote to loss.Max Morden’s present is moribund and grief-stricken (in Banville names are seldom random); he stays in his room mostly, has almost no contact with the landlady, Miss Vavasour, or the only other guest, Colonel Blunden (retired), and drinks himself into oblivion most nights. The deep past that he recalls, almost exclusively the events of one summer, by contrast, is teeming with vibrant, sensual life. That summer he had been 11 or 12, his parents had rented a modest chalet neighbouring ‘The Cedars’, the well-appointed house that has now become Miss Vavasour’s boardinghouse, then being let by the Graces, Carlo and Connie, their twin children, Chloe and Myles, roughly the same age as Max, and the children’s governess, Rose, in her late teens. This is the highly eventful summer referenced in the novel’s odd opening sentence, “They departed, the gods, on the day of the strange tide.” A few sentences later, more ominously, we are told, “I would not swim again, after that day.no, not ever again.” Though for the pubescent Max this was a sensually charged summer rich in epiphanies, and pulsing with sexual awakenings, for the attentive reader the jagged clues of impending disaster will not go unnoticed, even if unfamiliar with the author. If you know Banville, you also know the coming catastrophe is as inexorable as the North Atlantic tide. But if you like your plot development molasses-slow delivered in a silky smooth style, this novel won’t disappoint.Banville’s self-avowed literary ancestor is Henry James, and the former has inherited the latter’s affection for the perfectly constructed sentence.Readers in a hurry might become annoyed at the more than 2 full pages it takes the narrator to describe his aging face in a bathroom mirror, or bemused that a paragraph-long recollection of absolutely nothing happening except that Chloe “lifts a hand up high to brush a clinging strand of hair from her damp forehead” ends with, “And my life is changed forever.” But those who appreciate the Flaubertian mot juste will be saddened that the novel unravels in just under 200 pages. The work also speaks to readers looking for more than sound story and exquisite style.Banville’s being heralded “the heir to Nabokov” may be a tad fanciful, but ‘The Sea’ is without question a layered text. The most salient allusions, given Banville’s pedigree, are perhaps to Joyce.I mentioned names earlier, and ‘Grace’, is a pointed reference.“Araby” also gets a nod, with its obsession with young love, and, not surprisingly “The Dead” is echoed repeatedly. But Beckett, and, yes Nabokov, and perhaps even Poe (via Nabokov) are all hovering around Max the narrator, or more correctly, Max the unreliable narrator.Anna is also Annabel Lee in her ‘kingdom by the sea’, and Max one of Poe’s deluded speakers. There may even be a bit of Humbert Humbert in Max (which, we are latterly informed, isn’t his real name): “I padded behind Miss Vavasour with my bag in my hand, like the well-mannered murderer in some old black-and-white thriller.”; “The fact for instance that she did not know that she was later in my affections than her mother, of all people, made her seem almost piteously vulnerable in my eyes.” Despite his somber tone and tragic plot(s), Banville is not averse to adding a touch of Nabokovian playfulness to all the darkness; he is Irish after all.Certainly, Max is not the man he would have us believe he is, and what he represents, via dramatic monologue, as ‘memory’ is just as likely fabulation. The complexities of Banville’s construction of ‘self’ in the novel, even of ‘event’ (remembered?or invented?) and his simultaneous deconstruction of same, result in the very distinct possibility that ‘The Sea’ is at the same time a beautifully-wrought heartbreaking story, and a crafty parody of precisely the kind of novels that are repeatedly short-listed for, and often actually win Booker Prizes. If there is any truth at all in the latter, it might help to account for Banville’s mischievous expression of pleasure in his acceptance speech that ‘a work of art’ had, for a change, won the prize.Don’t forget the Library’s Adopt-a- Book event on A D S Lennoxville library The Sea by John Banville CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 everyone’s got a seat at the table,” she said.“This is our first time trying,” explained Buchanan, hoping the service could become an annual event. The idea first came about around May, and since then a 12-member team has been working on ideas of what to include in the service.“I’m a big advocate for mental health,” commented Pam Wilson, helping organize the service, “We tried to figure out how we could do something.” Wilson pointed out that people often shy away from the topic because there is still a lot of stigma associated with mental illness.“If we don’t start doing things like this, it will never change,” Wilson said. The planning team includes representatives from the congregation, the community and also Mental Health Es- trie.Buchanan added that the offering collected at the service would be donated to Mental Health Estrie.According to Buchanan, the service will follow a similar pattern to a regular Sunday, but with prayers designed to address mental health.Special songs and anthems have been chosen for the service, and Buchanan said the Lennoxville United choir would be amplified by a number of guest voices from the community.“We have to recognize we haven’t always been great,” admitted Buchanan, in the way the church has dealt with mental illness. The message she would like to convey with the upcoming service is, “we are here, we see you, we want to support you in any way we can.” Buchanan and Wilson said the service is meant to open a constructive and inclusive discussion about mental illness, to offer comfort to those who are struggling, and also to support those helping a loved one.“It touches everyone,” Wilson pointed out.“You can’t just have a service like that,” added Buchanan, explaining there will be light refreshments served afterwards.“Probably the most important coffee hour of the year will be this one,” she said. The service will take place Sunday, Oct.27 at 10 a.mat Lennoxville United Church in just around the corner, it’s a good idea to stay in the loop about various policies and ideas that have been put forward by candidates during the campaign.Electoral reform is one of the issues that has been brought up time and time again during campaigns.Changing the way Canadians vote has been a hot topic for years and a number of alternatives have been suggested. The most popular in Canadian politics is the electoral process known as proportional representation.Under Canada’s current voting system, known as first-past-the-post, citizens vote for a local candidate they would like to be their representative in parliament. Each province is divided into ridings and one person is voted in from each riding. With the current system, the candidate with the most votes in each riding has a seat in Ottawa. With this voting system, however, candidates can receive the most votes but not the majority of the vote (50 per cent or more) and still have a seat in Ottawa. In fact, most winning candidates don’t hold a majority.Let’s say there is a riding with 100 voters and the results break down like this: Candidate A: 45 votes.Candidate B: 20 votes.Candidate C: 35 votes.Candidate A received the most votes but does not hold the majority. They now have a seat in Ottawa.A popular alternative to the first-past- the-post system that many countries around the world have already implemented is known as proportional representation. In essence, proportional representation means that the percentage of seats a party holds in Ottawa is proportional to the percentage of the vote that they received.Under this electoral system, citizens vote for parties rather than individual candidates.Let’s say Canada has 100 voters and three parties running for election.Party A: 30 votes Party B: 30 votes Party C: 40 votes Party A and Party B both received 30 per cent of the vote, which means both parties would receive 30 per cent of the seats in Ottawa.Party C received 40 per cent of the vote, which means they would hold 40 per cent of the seats in Ottawa. The candidates to fill the seats would be chosen by the parties. They rank their candidates in a list and seats would be filled according to that order. The proportional representation voting system allows more political parties to be represented in Parliament, which means voters’ interests are more widely represented and smaller parties have a greater chance of winning seats.Under the first-past-the-post system, parties are easily able to form a majority in the legislature despite not holding the majority of the vote because citizens are voting for individual candidates. For example, party A holds 51 per cent of the seats in Ottawa because of the candidates who received the most votes in their riding, but the party may only have received 20 per cent of the popular vote. With proportional representation, if party A only received 20 per cent of the vote, they would only receive 20 per cent of the seats in Ottawa. It is an alternative that is described as more fair and it is an electoral system that Canadians should be familiar with when the topic comes up for debate.A handy dandy guide to proportional representation Lennoxville United By Shawn Malley Aweek before Christmas in 1998, Grace and I stood together holding hands in the wedding chambers of Toronto City Hall.It was a modest affair, shared with a few friends. The chambers were being renovated and we were married under a stairwell in a small room. The signs of construction were partially obscured by large vases of fresh cut flowers. We were in love, and the intimacy of this small room was a perfect expression of the day.The detail that made the most impression on me at the time came during the marriage vows, the promises that we made in love and promised to keep as we grew together in our bonds of marriage. For some reason the phrase “in sickness and in health” resonated with me in that heady moment. The conjunction “and” joined us together in ways that I had yet to fathom.Out of the blue a few years later Grace was afflicted with mania. Her story of her hospitalization and long and ongoing recovery and management of bipolar depression is chronicled in her accounts, published in The Record. There’s another phrase that began to have special meaning for me: folie a deux. The romance of watching the sun rise after a crazy sleepless night quickly escalated into paranoia. We both needed help. After many trips to the emergency ward, we were finally directed to Urgence Mentale at the Hotel-Dieu.When she was finally admitted to the care of the hospital I was left alone. We were separated and this was frightening for me as well as Grace.I had this sensation of dropping out of warp speed, watching her fly off without me.The hospital was necessary phase of intervention and I am thankful for all the help and care and understanding Grace received. This time also gave me an opportunity to recover, to enter back into life, and to learn about this disease. The real trial began when Grace was discharged and fell into a deep depression. We were together, but we were apart emotionally. This was the most trying experience of my life, soldiering on with the hope that my partner will recover, that I must remain patient and attentive while the world continued to spin on indifferent to our suffering.I learned that statistically I had a 30% chance of remaining married. It turns out I had about the same chances of retaining social bonds.Ignorance and fear drove a wedge between us and those who we found to our dismay were not strong enough emotionally to deal with the changes and trauma.Friends scattered.Family looked for and laid blame. As the healthy person, and as “the man,” I felt I had to shoulder the brunt of unkindness and indifference that came from all quarters. What still shames me to this day is the feeling of self-pity that arose from time to time.Through my own research I today know this is a natural expression of the trauma that I didn’t have the luxury of owning while Grace was incapacitated.Left largely to own devices (and the dedicated care of a trusted psychiatrist) our world collapsed onto itself. We were together in sickness and health. In the end there’s a lot of wisdom that comes from living with this disease.A perceptive person observed that the world is bipolar. We live in the world, with its pressures for success, its competition, but how we choose to engage them is, I have learned, itself a choice with enormous consequences for our well being.I live better as a result. The choices we make together clarify what matters and what doesn’t.I am a better, more empathetic person as a result of honoring my marriage troth, of living with a bipolar survivor. My work and my relationships with students as a university professor—my troth to the mission of our university—is not an escape, but is enriched by my experience and the knowledge about mental illness and its pervasive nature. What I have learned most is that love is not just a word exchanged in a ceremony. It’s reality is formed in the crucible of health and tempered in the fires of sickness.“And” we go on.A professor in the Department of English at Bishop's University, Shawn Malley is interested in opening literary and film analysis to questions about mental health with his students. As the University Om- budsperson, Shawn also promotes mental health awareness on campus.Resources: Mental Health Estrie: Support Mont-Megantic International Dark Sky Reserve: More to the night sky than meets the eye By Taylor McClure Special to The Record On Sept.21, 2007, ASTROLab founder and director Bernard Malenfant was presented with a certificate from the International Dark Sky Reserve Association in recognition of the world’s first ever International Dark Sky Reserve. The Mont-Megantic Dark Sky Reserve, which surrounds the Mont-Megantic Observatory located in Mont-Megantic National Park, was created with the goal of reducing light pollution, conserving energy, and protecting the dark sky for the future research of the Mont-Megantic Observatory, one of the most important research facilities in the country for the study of astronomy and astrophysics. It was also created with the tourism potential of Mont-Megantic Park in mind.In addition to the observatory, Mont- Megantic National Park also has an interpretation center called ASTROlab.Their role is to educate the public in the fields of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Cosmology and Aerospace, and to present the research and technological advances of the Mont-Megantic Observatory.Since the research, education and tourism opportunities of Mont-Megantic Park are based on the Observatory, protecting the night sky-where most of the astronomical research takes place-was vital. That is when ASTROLab, in collaboration with Mont-Megantic National Park and the Mont-Megantic Observatory, started to draw up guidelines for dark sky protection project in 2002.With support from the Granit Local Employment Center and the Société des établissements de plein air du Québec, funding for the project was confirmed and an action plan was set in place by project leader Chloé Legris to help reduce light pollution. In 2003, ASTROLab outlined the steps that needed to be taken for the creation of a dark sky reserve.Bylaws and regulations to limit light pollution were adopted by the 34 municipalities located in the reserve, which covers 5, 500 kilometers and stretches all the way to Sherbrooke. With financial support from all levels of government and Hydro Quebec, over 2,500 light fixtures were replaced to help reduce light pollution by 25 per cent. Those measures allowed the Mont- Megantic Dark Sky Reserve to become the first International Dark Sky Reserve to be certified and recognized by the IDA and UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). In 2008, Legris also received the Scientist of the Year award from Radio Canada for her role in establishing the reserve.Since the creation of the Mont-Megan- tic International Dark Sky Reserve, over 3300 light fixtures have been replaced in various municipalities, which has resulted in a savings of about $200,000 worth of electricity costs for the area and a 35 per cent reduction in light pollution. The dark sky reserve will continue to play a significant role in preserving the sky for future generations to discover, learn, and enjoy what the starry night has to offer and for future scientists at the Mont-Megantic Observatory to continue their groundbreaking research.More information about the Mont- Megantic International Dark Sky Reserve can be found on their website at http://ricemm.org/en/the-reserve/.The Observatory and ASTROLab is also open to the public on certain days of the year and information on the hours and prices can be found on ASTROLabs website at https://www.astrolab.qc.ca/en/visit- us/rates-business-hours/.RECORD ARCHIVES The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday , October 11, 2019 Page 5 Gustave getting ready for fall By Gordon Lambie Although the Thanksgiving weekend was the original planned end-date for the city of Sherbrooke’s “Art et Mosaic” living sculptures circuit, Sherbrooke’s Horticulture Director Benoit Lemire told The Record several of the “mo- saiculture” sculptures are likely to hang around into the fall. While several of the more mobile living sculptures in the city, such as the “rubber duck” that was located at Jacques-Cartier Park, will gradually be put away over the weeks leading up to the end of October, Lemire said the public has not seen the last of the living artworks yet.Gustave the garden gnome, most notably, is not finished with his public appearances for the year. After having spent the summer charming locals and visitors alike at festivals and public events across Sherbrooke, the whimsical living sculpture still has appearances lined up well into the holiday season.Currently stationed at the corner of King and Belvedere Streets, Lemire said that the gnome has two more festivals lined up for the fall, and may be donning a red coat and white beard as the weather turns colder.CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 “There were some people there who weren’t aware of us and our services and there were others who were connected to us and heard about it through word of mouth from us or one of our groups but hadn’t attended the golden age club,” she noted, pointing out that the resulting mix of people offered an interesting range of perspectives on what sorts of activities could replace the former club.“At this point we’re just going to take some time to go through the discussion and the key pieces that came out.” Sylvie Gilbert Fowlis, the Executive Director of community aid explained that the group is meeting next week to go over the feedback they received and start talking about what could be done.“All the people who were there voiced different opinions, which was nice,” she said, adding that refelction on what was said is key to making a plan that serves people’s needs without reaching outside of community aid’s mission or duplicating something that is already being done.“We just want to make sure we do things right.” The executive director was not concerned by the small turnout at the event, noting that this is a busy time of year for many people, and added that she has been getting phone calls from people who missed the meeting but still want to offer their perspective. On that note, and in light of the fact that the group doesn’t meet to discuss the feedback until next week, Gilbert Fowlis said that others are welcome to phone Community Aid at 819-821-4779and offer their suggestions if they have feedback to give.Although the aim is to provide local seniors with the services they need, the executive director pointed out that any plan that is made will also need to be approved by the organization’s board of directors before it can move forward, meaning that it might still be some time before any clear action can be taken.Community Aid GORDON LAMBIE Leigh Hortop and Sylvie Gilbert-Fowlis of the Lennoxville and District Community Aid are inviting local Golden-Agers to come to a meeting next tuesday afternoon and share their vision for what might fill the hole left behind by the end of the local Golden-Age Club By Tamari Kitossa Associate Professor, Sociology, Brock University In the wake of recent events during the federal election, it seems to me that if Canadians are to address the continuing significance of race and racism, we had better make up our minds to do so head on.When images surfaced of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in blackface and brownface, many Canadians wondered why that was an act of racism. And then NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was told by a white Montréal man that he “should cut your turban off….You’ll look like a Canadian.” The man then said he hoped Singh would win the election. Why aren’t Canadians better at making sense of what racism is?What we need — besides action and good policies — is a good, hard-nosed theory of racism. It should be a theory with interesting and useful metaphors. It should be a theory folks can grab hold of.It should be a theory that has the capacity to make sense to white nationalists and white supremacists.Right now we use concepts like “white privilege” and “implicit racism.” These can be useful ways to quickly explain white racism in non-threatening ways in everyday life. They also include an understanding of the history and politics of racism. But they may also be too easy and too superficial and so they also also nurture white complacency. We need to find ways to articulate the phenomenon of racism and the intricate ways it is experienced, observed, measured, practised and resisted. What is racism?Let’s start with a brief definition of racism.First, it consists of prejudice as values — when one holds positive self- perception and negative attitudes and stereotypes of others: one cannot exist without the other. This is true even if that prejudice is expressed in positive terms, such as “Chinese are good at math” or “Africans are great athletes.” Second, prejudice is mobilized through power — the coercive power of state and cultural violence. This power manifests itself as discrimination that benefits one group at the expense of others. In Toward the African Revolution, 20th-century philosopher Frantz Fanon argued that there are “cultures with racism and cultures without racism” and so “the racist in a culture with racism is therefore normal.” But not all racist cultures are created equal.Pierre Van Den Berghe, sociologist and author of Race and Racism, explains that despite the independent discovery of racism in a number of societies, the western strain of the virus has eclipsed all others.Through the colonial expansion of Europe, racism spread over the world. He also explains that culture should not be an excuse for individuals to absolve themselves from the responsibility of white racism. Therefore, we need a theory that brings together the interplay of cultural permissiveness with individual responsibility to resist the racism in one’s culture.Racism is in our memory One suggestion I have is to borrow from scientist Rupert Sheldrake’s unconventional theory of what’s known as morphic resonance. The idea of morphic resonance is that habits of self-organiza- tion are learned and transmitted across time, place and space. These habits are then built up as inherited memory.Applied to the social context, what this means is that racism is a habit of mind and concrete practice in cultural organization.Maybe the theory of morphic resonance can help us understand how racism is produced and reproduced through social forces. That is, as Fanon explained in Black Skin, White Masks, racism is sociogenic: it is literally and metaphorically learned behaviour that becomes engrained as a cultural imperative.Real people are racist, not institutions or systems. Thus racism is relationally “contagious” within and across generations through cultural memory in aphorisms, stories, ideas and ideologies.Racism is not only learned, it is experienced as pleasurable, is materially rewarding and is passed on in the nurture of culture where it deceives its perpetrators by appealing to the worst elements of human nature.Racism is a habitual way of thinking and practising power that circulates among living members of a culture and is bequeathed to future generations. It is epigenetic — meaning it influences our genes. But genes are no more destiny than culture. Both can be altered, if not transcended, through fostering alternative habits of thought and behaviour. For anti-racist cultural transformation to take place, a critical mass needs to commit to policy, politics and good faith to create a cascade of changed hearts, minds and behaviour.Given the deep and learned habit of racism, this is no easy task. Here is the rub: racism, for all its utility to individuals and groups who wield it, is in fact self-defeating and socially dangerous. The latter is evident in Nazi-ism, na- tivism and totalitarianism.Even aside from the fact that negatively racialized groups are terrorized, racism doesn’t stop there.Berlin journalist Charlotte Beradt’s gathering of anxiety dreams experienced by ordinary Germans after Adolf Hitler came to power tells us that racism is a chicken that, sooner or later, comes home to roost. This self-defeating nature of racism is too easily concealed by the elites it principally serves, as the authors of Boomerang Ethics: How Racism Affects Us All explain.Dig in for the long haul I believe Trudeau played racial politics with his apology. The prime minister confused his personal misdeeds as solely his wrong, and wilfully missed the point of his conduct.Second World War-era philosopher Hannah Arendt, in her essay “Responsibility and Judgement Under Dictatorship”, demanded that we strike a discerning balance between the culpability of a mass group and the responsibility of leaders: “…it is obvious that every generation, by virtue of being born into a historical continuum, is burdened by the sins of the fathers as it is blessed with the deeds of the ancestors.” Looking at Trudeau exercising the manifest power of state and the latent power of white Canadian culture, it is vital that the conversation moves beyond good versus bad, guilt versus innocence and indifference versus intent. These stark oppositions tilt too far into the subjective experience of individual responsibility to offer much analytical value. The emphasis ought to lay with the reality that anti-Blackness and white racism is a group dynamic shaping the conduct of individuals and groups. Can white Canadians bring themselves to radically theorize and dig in for the long haul to meet the challenge of eradicating white racism and nationalism?Which white political leader living in the fragile glass house of whiteness will have the courage to throw the first stone?Leaders need to lead, sometimes ahead of the lowest common denominator they too often follow.Tamari Kitossa does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.EDITORIAL Page 6 Friday , October 11, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Here is the rub: racism, for all its utility to individuals and groups who wield it, is in fact self-defeating and socially dangerous.Abortion a sign of evolution., Really? There are many reasons for women to seek abortions, among those are rape, incest, mental and physical health, finances, age, to name a few.It is easy for men to jump on their soap boxes and proclaim the rights of a fetus. If these women who seek abortions are forced to carry a child to term, then I have to ask those men if they are willing to jump off their soap boxes and reach into their wallets to support these children.Of course not.I do believe in the right of women to have control of their own bodies which includes the right to have an abortion among other things.Having said that, I do not support abortions after the fetus has reached three months and thus avoiding a live birth. This is just a small part of the battle women have fought for generations. They have made progress, but they are still fighting for equal pay, equal opportunities for upper level jobs, and the list goes on.Laws and opinions were made by men who believed that women were incapable of making intelligent decisions.Perhaps Mr.Savoie should ask his female acquaintances where they stand on women’s rights.BARBARA MORGAN WATERLOO, QUEBEC Letters Election shows Canadians still don’t understand what it means to be racist 6 Mallory, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1M 2E2 Dr.Brené Brown, love and a sense of belonging are the two most important qualities to living a fulfilling life.If we think back to our high school days many of us can identify things we used to do simply to fit in and belong. To feel as if we belong gives us a firm footing and a sense of security.Belonging to a group can give us courage and support as we go through the trials and tribulations of life. However a fine balance needs to be struck between accommodating oneself to the group and offering an alternative point of view.In a church community, as in any organization, care needs to be taken to allow the voice of each member to be heard.Conforming to the will of the strongest voices seems a large sacrifice to pay in order to gain a sense of belonging. In an ideal world, every person would be valued for their unique histories and perspectives.Every person would know they belonged. In the meantime each effort we make to welcome the newcomer and respect opinions that differ from our own goes a long way to learning how to value diversity, even as we nurture a sense of belonging for all.2) “Welcome in, we'd love to have you join the family. It's a joy to have you with us and to share this song of praise.” Our word this week reminded me of that song.A good friend sang it at my son's baptism.I still have a warm feeling in my heart as those words echo in my mind.I will be doing a baptism this Sunday as we welcome a new baby into our church family. We all want a place to belong, where people know us and care for us.There was a time many years ago when service clubs were popular: The Oddfellows, Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Lion's Club, or Masons.Places where men gathered, were initiated, and shared stories and action. For women similar groups such as the Woman's Institute, Order of the Eastern Star, University Women's Club also provide such a place.People long for a place to gather. These days such clubs face dwindling attendance and struggle to find members. Our churches face the same dilemma. In our denomination, people join by confirmation as teenagers, or by taking Adult membership classes.I joined at 14 because belonging, sharing in the responsibility of our community, was important to me.Last year two teenagers joined us by confirmation.(One of our new 14 year olds just made a loaf of sandwiches for a church reception, and was glad to be asked.) We use the word adherents for people who choose not to become members.I suspect far more people these days fall into that category. Why the reluctance, I wonder, to commit to membership.A song comes to mind from a sitcom a few years ago named “Cheers”.“Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came. You want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same. You want to be where everybody knows your name.” I believe we all have a craving to belong.I hope that all of you can find such a place in this lonely world we live in.3) Belonging is a universal human quest, founda- tional to the hierarchy of survival needs. The poet David Whyte says: "There is no house like the house of belonging." With poet Maya Angelou: "I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself." In a recent move, I find myself having to reconstruct all over again that sense of home. How many times have I done this before?Over a lifetime of multiple address changes, changing jobs, moving for all manner of personal, professional or educational reasons, the challenges of being the newcomer should be all too familiar.I need only rehearse the simple strategies for how to find my people, create the family of friends with whom I will feel at home.Recreate the network of souls among whom I wish to live and move and have my being. In contemporary terms, by now I know how to find my "tribe".First steps are discovering where I've landed, learning about the community and its history, sampling events and activities and exploring fresh opportunities for offering service here, in this unique place.Learning a new roster of names, and fitting them to new faces.Who are the people doing the things I love to do?Who's doing the Food Shelf, where do the artists and writers hang out, is there a meditation group in town? How do I meet and join them?In the process I must open up to new vistas and establish common ground. To my joy, it turns out my people are everywhere! Whatever our age or social context, breaking the sense of isolation requires intentionally entering into community. Our longing to belong bids us seek out new connections, risk reaching out to know others and make ourselves known. This Thanksgiving weekend I will celebrate in a whole new setting, grateful for friends "back home" from whence I've come, relishing among my newfound community the discovery all over again that I truly can be at home wherever I go.May it be so for you as well.May you find yourself belonging wherever you are! One word, three voices this time - and now your turn to reflect: What gives you a sense of belonging, and how do you help others know they belong?Rev.Mead Baldwin pastors the Waterville & North Hatley pastoral charge; Rabbi Boris Dolin leads the Dorshei-Emet community in Montreal; Rev.Lee Ann Hogle ministers to the Ayer's Cliff, Magog & Georgeville United Churches; Rev.Carole Martignacco, Unitarian Universalist is retired from ministry with UUEstrie and now resides in St.Andrews by-the-Sea NB, but keeps one foot in the Townships by continuing with this column.“Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came. You want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same. You want to be where everybody knows your name.” COLUMNIST Friday , October 11, 2019 Page 7 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com ACTIVITIES ANIMATOR School year 2019-2020 BCS WEEKENDS ACTIVITIES PROGRAM In addition to the major events (including Carnival and Grad) in the calendar, the Activities Staff are responsible for organizing and delivering a diverse selection of weekend activity offerings for BCS students to choose from throughout the course of the school year.Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Life, the Animator provides close support and shares the responsibility for the planning and delivery of the weekend activity program. This is a part-time position of 17-20 hours per week with the majority of work occurring on the weekends. Please consult our web https://www.bishopscollegeschool.com/about/careers for further information.A resume and letter of interest should be sent by October 18, 2019 to: Human Resources Bishop’s College School 80 Moulton Hill Road Sherbrooke (Québec) J1M 1Z8 wjohnson@bishopscollegeschool.com *Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.Danièle Lizotte has moved to a new location.I would like to welcome my clients from Antonia Beauty Care to ôbella’s.4695 Bourque Blvd., Sherbrooke 819-564-7755 • obellaesthetique.com one column, four voices Open to the Spirit Today’s Word: Belonging Wendell Pehlemann is seen by those who don’t know him as a very quiet, almost shy guy in the band. The truth is, Pehlemann is much loved and appreciated by his friends and peers for his keen intellect, quick wit, dry sense of humour and his talent. He was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1966 and raised in Bury by his parents Bruce and Ruby.He currently resides in Lennoxville for a shorter commute to where he works as a draftsman at Pro- Par Inc.For the last 30 years or so, he has been very active on the local music scene and he has been part of Slightly Haggard for 20 years now.It is sometimes hard to pinpoint exactly when a taste turns into a passion. In his case it all started when he was very young, but here’s the story of how it all started.“Allegedly I used to dance in my crib to the sound of Sam Hopper playin’ on the radio, so I’d guess my love of music started early.I had a great-grandfather who played the saw (yes, a saw) and step danced, otherwise I didn’t really come from a musical family.I enjoyed listening to my parent’s collection of LPs and 8-Tracks, mostly Country of course,” he said.A simple idea sometimes turns into some kind of personal challenge and this is exactly what happened when he was a teenager. At that age, it is somehow exciting to make plans and dream but it is definitely a thrill to make it happen. And he did! “A high-school buddy of mine had the idea to form a band, and he convinced me that I could learn to play the bass guitar.Hey, they only have four strings, right? So the bass chose me and I’ve been a devoted follower ever since,” said Pehlemann.Little did he know that learning how to play bass would fill his life and weekends with a lot of action, and that things would go much further than he thought at the time! “Our friend Sam Evans gave us the name Midnight Men, and a band was formed. We had fun for a few years, but shortly after high school we all went our separate ways,” he explained.A few years later, Peter Mackey approached Pehlemann with the idea of forming another band, Mountain Dew.That’s how the young man got his start as a musician.“The rest is all Whiskey under the bridge,” he said.Being a musician requires a fair amount of practice to hone their skills, learn new material and be in sync with the rest of the band.Like many of his peers he spent a lot of time at mastering his instrument.“Practice? What’s that?I used to practice every chance I got, but my talent level plateaued years ago.Now I just rehearse a song a few days before it is needed, sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t.It’s a good thing that I’ve been blessed to play with a very forgiving bunch of guys, the Slightly Haggard band.Has it been 20 years already?” he replied jokingly.Life sometimes gives us some unexpected pleasures or experiences confirming we’re on the right road and doing what we are meant to do.They come as little rewards leaving us with precious memories.“I also had the opportunity to play for Johnny Reid in a band called Crossfire.Being involved in Johnny’s journey to who and what he’s become has been a truly memorable experience. My name is somewhere in the liner notes of John’s first CD, the whole recording experience memory I’ll cherish forever,” he stressed.Pehlemann has many favorite artists and a very eclectic CD collection that ranges from the band America to Dwight Yoakam. He owns every CD Marty Stuart has ever made, all the Hanks, Corb Lund, Lyle Lovett, Haggard and Cash, and the list goes on.“Right now I can’t get enough of Larkin Poe.My influences are talented people and great songs,” he added. This seasoned musician has a great understanding of what his role in a band is.He works very well in a variety of musical situations, when the bass has to fit nicely in the mix of instruments being played.“Playing bass guitar puts me right in the middle of a song, like a bridge between the rhythm and melody.Locked in a groove with the drummer (thanks Chris Curtis) makes me feel like all is right with the world.I once read, “Bass, it’s what makes your girlfriend dance.”, and they do like to dance,” he said.“Fortunately the Townships host many, many talented musicians, most of them are now good friends of mine due to our common love of music. It’s been said that if you do what you love you’ll never have to work, music is a lot like that.I want to keep playing and jammin’ with my friends, makin’ new acquaintances, and enjoying life.” You can catch him and Slightly Haggard playing at the Burrough’s Falls dance hall for The Country Music Appreciation Jam on Saturday, Oct.12 at 1 p.m.TALK The Record Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture October 11 - October 17, 2019 Country Connection Jessie Pelletier All about that bass for Wendell Pehlemann Your week on TV WEEKDAY MORNING Bell Star 6 AM 6:30 7 AM 7:30 8 AM 8:30 9 AM 9:30 10 AM 10:30 11 AM 11:30 WCAX # - - Channel 3 News Morning CBS This Morning Rachael Ray The Doctors The Price Is Right WPTZ % - - NBC5 News Today Today Live with Kelly and Ryan Today 3rd Hour Today With Hoda & Jenna CBMT & 206 301 Daybreak (:11) Addison Beat Bugs True Rainbow (:22) PJ Masks Rusty Rivets The Moblees (9:52) Arthur Daniel Tiger Dragons’ Den CHLT _ 107 718 F Salut bonjour (N) (SC) (9:59) Bien Fous du BBQ Le tricheur Mario Dumont M (9:59) Deux ?lles le matin (N) Communiquer T Mario Dumont W Th (9:59) Ça ?nit bien la semaine WMTW ( - - WMTW News 8 at 6am Good Morning America Live with Kelly and Ryan Tamron Hall The View CKSH ) 108 - Toc toc toc Mehdi et Val Gar?eld et cie Alix et Salmigondis Motel monstre RDI matin On va se le dire Ricardo Silence CKMI + - - Global News Morning Varied Programs The Morning Show Sarah’s House Expandables Rachael Ray CFCF , 205 312 Your Morning Your Morning Your Morning Your Morning Your Morning Live with Kelly and Ryan The Marilyn Denis Show The View WVNY 6 - - Local 22 News This Morning Good Morning America The Mel Robbins Show Paid Program Paid Program The View WUTV > - - Paid Program Paid Program 2 on Your Side Daybreak Var.Programs Couples Court The 700 Club Judge Mathis Judge Jerry Judge Jerry CFKS ?106 726 F NVL (SC) Moment V Moment V (SC) Moment V NVL en bref Moment V NVL en bref Histoire Infopublicité Chicago Med ’ (SC) M Infopublicité T W Th WUHF - 363 Good Day Rochester Good Day Rochester Good Day Rochester Judge Mathis The Wendy Williams Show Judge Jerry Judge Jerry WETK - - Classical Strt World News Ready Jet Go! Lanthier Special to The Record Two special events at this year's Knowlton Literary Festival will highlight local talent. On Thursday evening, October 17, four poets will help pay tribute to the late her life drew to a close, wrote a blog about her experience which drew thousands of readers. Her poetry collection The Crow's Vow, a four part seasonal sequence, describes her journey towards renewal during an acutely difficult time in her life.Four Townships poets—Marjorie Bruh- muller (The Bell You Hardly Hear), Antony DiNardo (Skylight), Steve Luxton (The Dying Meteorologist) and Ann Scowcroft (The Truth of Houses) will read from their work.Wine, cheese and fresh fruit will be available while pianist John Barr will provide music. The evening is free of charge and will take place in Centre, 270 Victoria in Knowlton.Four very different writers will share their thoughts on the writing life with host Roger Williams.Journalist, ghost writer and novelist Fred Langan, children's writer Heather Moreland, novelist Meghan Redmile, and humourist Ross Murray will engage in a round table discussion hosted by Roger Williams on the challenges and rewards of publishing their work. The event Seys of The Yamaska Literacy Council on the efforts to improve reading and writing skills in the Brome Missisquoi area, and Melanie Cutting on the Write Here Write Now project which conducts writing workshops throughout the Townships.“We're also bringing our little red wagon,” says Festival President Philip Lan- thier, “where people can place any leftover books for kids they wish to donate to the Tales for Tots programme. We'll make sure the books get to children in the area.” Townships writers at Knowlton Literary Festival The arrival of fall brings such amazing splendor that it’s a wonder it isn’t enough to compel everyone to take a walk with Mother Nature.Actually, it’s the perfect time to start a running program as cooler temperatures allow you to layer your clothing as needed. While you absorb the experience of running through a crunching, leafy kaleidoscope of colour, you will also be improving your fitness, almost as a side perk while Nature’s gifts keep you pre-occupied.What better excuse do you need to lace up your shoes and soak in the leaves, shocked by cold into brilliant shades of yellow and red before floating innocuously to their bed below?Sometimes the wind keeps them hovering like dragonflies which is a sound I’ve learned to appreciate. The sweet smells of fall are unmistakable and when combined with sunshine beaming onto the leaves it’s almost a sensory overload, the sense of satisfaction being so complete. It can make me feel that there is other place on earth I would rather be.Yet, if you allow yourself to look a bit past the run as I do on occasion, the thought of hot pumpkin pie is also a pretty compelling reward after a fall run.Remember, comfort food doesn’t have to be served in extra large portions.Fall has always been my favourite season since I was a child because it marked back to school with fond memories of gathering big colourful leaves for a school project. It also marked my introduction to cross country running, whereas I didn't care if I got my legs caked in mud.The feeling of being spent after running up steep hills while carefully not tripping over roots was a sense of accomplishment that stuck with me.This type of challenge inspired me to continue running in my adult years. If anything is motivating enough to get you back into shape during the fall cross country running season, all of your senses will love you for it.Here are some tips to get you ready for fall running: 1.Running in the cold crisp air can be invigorating enough to allow you to run faster and not overheat.Set goals for improved performance.Fall is perfect start time for beginning runners.2.Dress for the conditions: dress in layers, wear a jacket, vest, tights, but don't overdress because you could overheat.Check the weather conditions before heading out.3.Wear reflective gear to be seen by cars and cyclists.4.Stay hydrated even though it is colder and properly fuel your body about two hours before running.5.Mix up the terrain - by switching to trails and cross country can add a dose of motivation to your program if you were more acclimatized to roads and sidewalks.Afterwards you can enjoy a hot cup of chocolate with a sense of accomplishment…and maybe a small slice of pumpkin pie.Local Sports If anything is motivating enough to get you back into shape during the fall cross country running season, all of your senses will love you for it.Friday , October 11, 2019 Page 17 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Christine Blanchette A Now the defense looked straightforward: heart to the jack, diamond-four return, club to the ace, second diamond ruff and cash the club king for down three. No sweat — except it didn’t work out like that.East, thinking declarer had a singleton heart ace, gave count by playing his heart two at trick one!
