New Brunswick case of the MILLION DOLLAR COMMA, which made headlines worldwide about 10 years ago. This unassuming mark of punctuation found itself precariously situated at the beginning of a qualifying clause in a contract between Rogers and Bell Aliant over the rental of hydro poles. This unfortunate “situation” led to a knock-down, drag-out, no- holds-barred legal battle before the CRTC—resulting in a resounding victory for Rogers. As a pundit said, “Out of little marks of punctuation mighty misunderstandings grow!” It is in this vein that Cecelia Watson presents us with this delightful publication, Semicolon: How a Misunderstood Punctuation Mark Can Improve Your Writing, Enrich Your Reading, and Maybe Even Change Your Life.(!!!) You’ll find it ripe with subtleties. For example, the title. She could simply and tamely have called it “The Semicolon”—AARGH! death shivers!—which would have lumped it in with the driest of sections of style guides and grammars (alongside “the colon” “the misplaced modifier” or “the em dash”).Instead she titles it “SEMICOLON” (cf.“Alien”, “Asteroid”, or “Ghost”), which, thus unarticled, reveals her intention to discuss the semicolon not as a simple mark of punctuation but as a force of nature. We are described its miraculous conception in Venice in 1494.Columbus may well have been making a nuisance of himself on the ocean blue, but the real action was taking place in a collaboration between printer & publisher Aldus Manutius and type-designer Francesco Greffo, who, seeking a mark that was not quite as brief as a “,” and not quite as long as a “:”, came up with a “;”! Oh Brave New World! What follows in Watson’s volume is a “biographical” history of the semicolon that will keep you on the edge of your seat.Throughout, Watson shows remarkable erudition coupled with a whimsical sense of humour.Consider some of her chapter headings: “The Science of Semicolons”, “Sexy Semicolons”, “Loose Women and Liquor Laws”, “The Minutiae of Mercy”.Curiously, you will be hard-pressed to find any instructions regarding the actual correct use of the semicolon.Such matters are beneath the author’s concerns. We learn that the semicolon has been at times reviled by such notables as George Orwell , Donald Barthelme, and Kurt Vonnegut, the latter opining, “All they do is show you’ve been to college.” We learn that Mark Twain became right testy when his proofreaders interfered with his punctuation: “Yesterday Mr.Hall wrote that the printer’s proofreader was improving my punctuation for me & I telegraphed orders to have him shot without giving him time to pray.” Readers are also treated to significant perigrinations through the social history of semicolons. We learn how the semicolon contributed to a spike in dipsomania among drinkers in Massachusetts. At issue was a law which forbade the selling of liquor “between the hours of 11 at night and 6 in the morning; nor during the Lord’s day, except that if the licensee is also licensed as an Innholder.” Lawsuits and countersuits over this evil semicolon, and the overall uncertainty surrounding its meaning, threw the hotel and the drinking business into chaos, and this misbegotten semicolon kept justices busy for a full five years. In fact, it seems that few spheres of human activity have been left untouched by the vagaries of errant punctuation. From parking tickets to election results, from convictions for treason to death penalties for murder, punctuation has all too frequently been a deciding factor.Spreading her expertise even further afield, Cecelia Watson provides an amusing history of the “grammar business” in 19th century America. With the spread of literacy, increased levels of reading, a relative growth in affluence, and decreased printing costs, grammar books became extremely popular.Grammar carpetbaggers abounded as self-pro- claimed experts peddled the newest approaches to grammar like so much snake oil.It was at this time that sentence diagramming (the scourge of school children even today) reared its ugly head.Watson neatly ties the treatment of the semicolon and punctuation in general to a push towards “logic, natural science, and induction” in school curricula. On a lighter note, Watson leads us through a semicolon version of a wine tasting, providing us with a subtle tour of various authors (#greatsemicolonsI- haveknown) who have used this mark to great effect. She shows how Melville’s use of the semicolon in Moby Dick was key to the digressive and incidental quality of the work: “.the semicolons are in the service of carrying you slowly, gently, pleasurably away from whatever it was you thought you were reading about—the process of decapitating a whale, or how to assess winds, or cannibalism.” Raymond Chandler, Henry James, Irvine Welsh, Henry Thoreau—all are cited for their unique and innovative uses of the semicolon. If there is an overall thrust to the work it is that narrow prescriptivism, as manifested in confining rules, is just plain wrong-headed.The only reason punctuation exists is to allow for a more precise rendering of thought into words. And the process of natural selection works as well in punctuation as it does in animal species.Semicolon, by Cecelia Watson, is coming soon to Lennoxville will be 25 years since Marise Gosselin became the first mother to give birth at the birthing centre that now serves Sherbrooke and the surrounding area.“My dossier was number 001,” she recalled, explaining that although she worked in the auto industry at the time, she responded to a newspaper ad taken out by local midwife Jeen Kirwen for a training course to be a midwife’s assistant and quickly became certain that she wanted to know more about the re-emerging world of midwifery care in Quebec.“The stars were aligned,” she continued, noting that not long after signing up for the course she became pregnant and was able to take advantage of the care that she had spent time learning about. In the end, Gosselin’s two boys, Raphael and Hubert were both born at the Maison de naissance, and although she never ended up assisting with any other births that experience opened her eyes to an approach to maternity and birthing care that she says is still often misunderstood decades later.Jeen Kirwen, Jennie Stonier, and Lyne Castonguay were at the heart of the original pilot project for a birthing centre in the region, which got started five years before their profession was formally legalized in the province.Reached by The Record in the lead-up to an open house planned at the Maison de naissance de l’Estrie this coming Sunday, each remarked in her own way at how that 25 year mark is really just one milestone on a road that stretches back much further.“I was very, very involved,” Kirwen said, describing the 25 years she worked before the province wrote her profession into law as a “golden age” when midwives were free to be who they wanted to be.Despite the fact that the creation of a law meant a standardization of practices, though, the midwife said that “the legalization was an extreme joy for all of us, even though there were difficulties.” Stonier, meanwhile, was working in northern Quebec as part of a movement to bring birth back to northern communities that dates back to 1986.At the time, she explained, roughly a generation and a half of Inuit women had lived through leaving their communities for as much as two months at a time to give birth, even though there was a historically strong tradition of midwifery care in the culture.Driven by a desire to bring that tradition back, the community reached out to people who were practicing home birth at the time to share their best practices.“I went up there for a year,” Stonier said, “and it’s been 34 years since then.” It was in bringing her then teenaged son south for cultural exposure that she shared the community birthing centre model with Kirwen and Castonguay, and got involved in the local pilot project.Castonguay clarified that until 20 years ago, midwifery was in a legal grey zone.“There was no law,” she said.“It was not illegal, but it was not legal either.” While women were working as midwives, there was disagreement about the safety and legitimacy of nonclinical maternal care on the provincial level.“One of the uniquenesses of our project in the Estrie is that we were the only community where teams of doctors actually signed written agreements to collaborate with us even though, at that time, the College des Medecins was sending letters to its members saying not to participate in these pilot projects,” she said, pointing out that pilot projects in other parts of the province failed because the community was not willing to get behind the initiative.“There were a lot of people present and involved and willing to collaborate with us,” Castonguay said.“We were very lucky,” Kirwen said, pointing out that women working in her field are present to support normal, uncomplicated births.“We’re not the last line,” she continued.“If I have a complication, I have to go to a doctor and she or he has to help.” It took three tries for the local pilot project to get government support, with the successful proposal being hand-delivered by a delegation of community partners who all travelled together to Montreal to show their support.“In the beginning it was extremely exciting,” Kirwen said, noting that the project was first located on Murray Street before it moved to its current location in Brompton.“It’s like a family home,” she continued, explaining that part of the idea behind the birthing centre is to create a middle ground between the clinical environment of the hospital and home birth. She also shared that the centre creates a communal space where people can drop in and build relationship with one another.“For me that’s the number one thing,” Kirwen said.“Midwifery is relationship.” For all the work that went into establishing the centre and others like it across the province, and ensuring that people have access to the services of midwives, Kir- wen said that she doesn’t feel totally satisfied.“The minister legalized midwifery, but he didn’t take responsibility, in my opinion, to inform the public of what is a midwife.People still dont know,” she said, arguing that she still encounters people all the time who feel that having one’s pregnancy followed by a midwife is somehow more risky.“This is a big part that is still missing; the information to the general public.” “Birth does not have to be this frightening event,” Stonier added, arguing that people in Quebec are very fortunate to have access to midwifery care and spaces where “normal birth” can take place Despite their various concerns, however, the three founding partners all said that they are very pleased to see how far things have come.“I’m proud of everything we’ve done,” Kirwen said, “and I think it’s a fantastic place.” Friday , October 4, 2019 Page 3 “Birth does not have to be this frightening event,” Stonier added, arguing that people in Quebec are very fortunate to have access to midwifery care and spaces where The climate strike in Sherbrooke on September 27 was the largest protest in the city’s history.More than 5,000 people walked from the University of Sherbrooke to hear speeches in Jacques-Cartier Park and continue to the city hall.Free bus transport to the university was provided by the city. What a walk it was! School pupils carrying colourful placards marched with representatives of unions and political organisations, teachers and musicians, and students from Sherbrooke’s two universities. There were people of all ages from babies to octogenarians. We all chanted climate change demands: no fossil fuels, don’t fly, no meat, and more deep green actions and biodiversity protections by government. An estimated 6 million people worldwide took part in climate strikes during the week ending September 27.Half a million joined Montréal’s strike to walk with Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, who has been protesting each Friday for the last year.Greta came to Montréal from a youth climate summit at the UN in New York. Her chastisement of world leaders’ lack of action to prevent climate chaos was delivered in a no-nonsense manner. In the past, being overly polite hasn’t helped overcome their inertia, so why not tell it as it is?“Tell the truth” about climate justice, first voiced by Extinction Rebellion, has become the mainstay of this burgeoning movement.Greta always says the same thing: “Listen to the science” — not to the lobbyists. And she tells the older generations, “We are the change and the change has arrived.” Justin Trudeau, the prime minister, came out to speak to her as he waved his way through the crowd.Do more, much more, or else my generation won’t survive, she admonished him.In contrast to the expected no-show of the climate-change-denying Conservatives, the other political parties were well represented, aware of the power of the thousands of young people poised to vote this month who were taking part in climate strike protests throughout Québec and the rest of Canada. On a warm note, the environmental activist David Suzuki chatted with Greta and praised her work, and the mayor of Montréal gave her the keys to the city. The Montréal area has suffered numerous climate-change-induced catastrophes in the last few years, ranging from massive floods to heatwaves that have taken numerous lives. In common with many other cities, including New York, the people of Montréal know that they must themselves act to combat climate chaos and not wait for ineffectual federal or provincial leadership. This brings us to our own motivations and responsibilities. Were the climate strikes an inspiration and a tipping point for massive individual action, or were they a way to simply assuage a gnawing sense of guilt? How many came out on a sunny day for a great party with friends? Many adults believe that and won’t endorse the right for students to leave their classrooms.Having attended both the March 15 and September 27 protests I don’t think that’s fair or helpful; in fact, for many adults the reluctance to encourage young people to participate in the Fridays for Future student strikes may just be a reflection of their own biased, defeatist and apathetic view of the world. But the big question is where we go from here, and hopefully these historic marches will be the impetus for immediate action on climate.Watch what happens next week when Extinction Rebellion activists take to the streets around the world and disrupt the status quo.In the meantime, ask yourself what personal changes you are committed to if Greta and her generation are to get through this century. Please give these questions serious consideration: are you ready to stop flying or going on a cruise, knowing that one return flight to Cuba causes havoc to a person’s ecological footprint? Will you walk or cycle instead of using a car, and take a bus or train for longer journeys, realizing that transportation choices affect climate and pollution levels?Becoming a vegan or vegetarian has huge ramifications for land use and forests. Are you ready?Especially in the west, given our overconsumption, will you pledge to have one fewer child, or speak to your children about giving you one fewer grandchild?Research clearly shows that this may be the single biggest contribution to slowing down climate change and biodiversity loss.Is your family ready to grow an organic garden and buy local organic food, thus contributing to better soil, biodiversity and community? Finally, can we make peace with this Earth and embrace inclusiveness with Nature?Page 4 Friday , October 4, 2019 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record Millions march for climate and galvanize a social movement Douglas Nadler DOUGLAS NADLER In the meantime, ask yourself what personal changes you are committed to if Greta and her generation are to get through this century.COLUMNIST CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 The young students who attend Pope Memorial today, so many years later, can tell you about many of those young men and women who served.Through collaboration with the Bury Legion Branch 48, students have visited the graves of 109 veterans in four local cemeteries. At the graveside, students read the gravestones, to see how old the veteran was, and to see if he made it back from war, or died during the war.The veterans’ graves in these cemeteries have all been supplied with a white cross by the Bury Legion. The students respectfully place the Canadian flag atop the cross. The idea for this remembrance came from a Legion member (Erwin Watson), when his visiting cousin asked why we don’t honour our soldiers’ graves in the manner that they do where he came from, in the U.S.A.Upon discussing it with the Legion members in Bury, it was decided that Branch 48 would make the crosses, order the flags, and ask the school children to place the flags. This has been happening for about 10 years now. Each June, the children solemnly walk to the graves, and pay respect to those buried there. Some have relatives, some not, but all learn about the history of these tragic time periods, when young men and women left this little town to go off to WW1, WW2, or the Korean War.This year and last, Bury Branch 48 has paid for the bus, to take the Cycle 3 students to the Murphy Gordon Museum of the Army Navy Air Force in Lennoxville. There, the students were given a guided tour by Tim Belford. For many years before that, the veterans who lived nearby, visited our school each November. What their message to the children always was, is that war is a horrible thing to go through, and that they hoped to never have to see people go through it again. As Tim Belford stated, “The whole purpose of the museum is to remember, remember the young men and women that died. It’s not in any way, shape, or form, a glorification of war.Nobody in their right mind wants war.None of the soldiers, I’ve never heard anyone, say it was a fun time. This is to remember the sacrifices that young men and women gave, giving up their life for four or five years!” We believe that this is an important message for young people, especially with the glorification of violence, which exists in their world, on tv, in video games, and on various internet sites. The pictures shown here represent the past and present. Some of the pictures show the veterans and students together at the school from years gone by; some show the graveside visits; and some are of the museum visit. In all of them, I think you can see the respect and gratitude that these school children have developed for the generations of brave men and women who came before them! Pope Memorial wishes to thank our partners, the members of the Bury Legion Branch 48, for all their help with the task of educating our young children about this important, and also very tragic, time in our history. One added picture is the sandbox which the Legion funded, and Joey built. Many trucks and excavators ‘vroom’ through the sand every day, driven by little hands and imaginative minds! d’Histoire, Bishop's University Greg Donaghy Director, Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary International History, University of Toronto Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is promising to cut overseas aid by 25 per cent.Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau pledges to increase aid, but will still leave the amount Canada spends on aid at barely 0.28 per cent of Canada’s gross national income, well below the levels attained by previous governments.Neither one shows much awareness of the twists and turns of Canada’s 70 years in the aid field, or a willingness to learn from the past. Both seem to assume aid is an act of pure generosity.Yet as the contributors to our new book, A Samaritan State Revisited, demonstrate, government policy goals have been much more important than altruism in shaping Canadian aid.Compared to the size of our economy, our aid has been slipping since the 1980s, and Canada lags behind most other donors.Time and again, we have failed to match our rhetoric with action. We’ve been a middle-of-the-pack aid donor rather than the global leader we should be.The first Canadian ventures into aid built on relief efforts in Europe during and after the Second World War, especially the massive mission by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA).Canada sent aid both multilaterally, through the UN and its agencies, as well as bilaterally to favoured countries. It pledged both technical assistance (experts, scholarships and skills transfer) and capital aid (money for major development projects).Branding projects Within the Colombo Plan, the Commonwealth’s aid scheme for Asia that Canada helped launch in 1951, recipient governments drew up their own development plans and donors pitched in, sometimes in exchange for the chance to “brand” projects — a Canada dam here, a Canada bridge there.Still, Canada manufactured plenty of things, and was willing to send them to Asia — at least to those parts that were non-communist and, most especially, Commonwealth members. In the first 15 years of Canada’s aid program, from 1950 to 1965, 95 per cent of Canadian assistance flowed to three Asian Commonwealth member countries: India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Aid administration and project selection was freewheeling and creative, open to recipient government priorities.Ottawa left the big picture to the UN, its aid programs distinct but conceived as part of a bigger multilateral effort —not a bad summary of how Canadians saw their foreign relations as a whole.Africa, the Caribbean By the late 1950s, requests from newly independent states in the Caribbean and Africa prompted the creation of more programs. And domestic pressure to respond to demands from French Canada for a foreign policy reflecting Canadian biculturalism spawned cultural, educational and economic aid packages for francophone West Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. In 1960, Progressive Conservative prime minister John Diefenbaker moved all aid operations to a new External Aid Office (EAO).Almost overnight, aid scattered in an ad hoc fashion over poorer parts of the globe became “development assistance.” It was a structured and often multilateral approach that marshalled technical and capital assistance, trade and financial policy and co-ordinated donor support into a complex and long-term campaign for social change and economic growth. In May 1968, egged on by its reformist director-general, Maurice Strong, Liberal prime minister Pierre Trudeau transformed the EAO into the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).In doing so, Trudeau’s government signalled its intention to become a major player in global aid, an ambition marked by a growing roster of recipient countries and a rising aid budget. The evolving shape of Canadian aid administration echoed global trends, epitomized in the work of a UN-backed Commission on International Development chaired by former Liberal prime minister Lester B.Pearson.The result was Partners in Development, a report released in 1970 that famously set 0.7 per cent of gross national income as the amount that wealthier states ought to spend on development assistance.Under Strong and his successor, Paul Gérin-Lajoie, CIDA became almost a state within a state. The agency offered room for thinking about development differently.Yet results fell short of the rhetoric.Measured as a percentage of GDP, Canadian aid under Trudeau reached its pinnacle at 0.54 per cent in 1978 even as other government departments tied CIDA’s budget to broader foreign policy goals.Commercial considerations, in particular, came to the fore.Canada’s aid-to-GDP ratio briefly recovered to 0.5 per cent in 1988 under Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney. His government backed CIDA president Margaret Catley-Carlson’s stress on boosting civil society, helping the poorest and promoting “women in development.” Yet public support for aid was flagging. In a 1985 Decima survey, half of respondents thought that aid was at the right level, whereas only 24 per cent wanted it to increase and 17 per cent judged it too high.Cuts to aid begin So there was not much political cost for governments that wanted to reduce Canada’s involvement in international development.Cuts began under Mulroney in 1989 to 1992, reflecting both a desire to trim deficits and the decreasing prominence of aid as the Cold War sputtered to an end and the Global South ceased to be an arena of superpower contestation.Global trends after the Cold War made aid increasingly conditional on the ne- oliberal structural adjustment programs championed by international financial institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and major donor states.Under its president, Marcel Massé, CIDA embraced this free market “Washington consensus,” pushing governments in the Global South to deregulate their economies, reduce public spending and turn to market-based policies. In a reflection of Canadian trade goals, CIDA prioritized more middle-income countries such as Indonesia and China as major recipients, while cutting out lower- income countries.Mulroney also began to dismantle the architecture of public engagement on which CIDA’s popular support had rested. The process accelerated under Liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien and culminated in the outright hostility toward many aid NGOs expressed by Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper’s government.Hapless CIDA officials were unable to defend their agency from calls to merge it with the much larger Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, a merger accomplished in 2013.Canadian aid has moved through new policies and new priorities over the decades, but coherence has long been lacking. Its current rate of 0.28 per cent of gross national income is half of its 1970s peak and well below the average for all donor states.Ambitious positioning of Canada as global leader is undermined by the scant resources allocated to aid.Still, Canadians see their country as generous and sympathetic, and Canadian governments have never ceased to be major players in global development debates.A Samaritan State Revisited reminds us that Canada is neither a heroic do-gooder nor an imperialist exploiter.Rather, our country is in a more ambiguous position that has both reflected and shaped global trends in Canadian development thought and practice. The erosion of public leaders are called to lead funeral services from time to time.Sometimes families want a eulogy read, a summary of someone's life with anecdotes of a personal nature.I prefer to have family members write such memories, especially for people I don't know well. How do you sum up a person's life with a few words on a page? This task might become even more difficult for those whose lives have been problematic or filled with tragedy.Still it is important. When I was a student my grandmother died. She had a wonderful laugh and loved to play games with us.The priest at the funeral, however, had never met her and the family was not consulted about the service, which was a series of formal lessons and prayers. Her name was only mentioned twice, once at the beginning and once during a long prayer. It was as if he was reading from a text with a blank space “Insert name here”.I was a pallbearer and sat in the back seat while the priest and driver were in the front. They shared funny funeral stories, and in my grief I was so angry and upset. That memory stayed with me.A few years later I was ordained and made a promise to myself that I would never be so formal and uncompassionate.A eulogy is a really significant event.Sharing memories is important.Funerals should have a personal element. These days, I am also aware that some families choose not to have any religious service. How then will they be able to deal with grief?Everybody's life is precious and has meaning.Eulogies are important and need to be crafted with care.2) When a loved one dies, if the relationship has been a good one, all those little day-to-day annoyances seem to fade away. All that we remember are the good times, the shared adventures and the common values. What a gift that is! It’s as if we are able to shed the judgmental attitude that, in our daily lives, prevents us from focusing on all the wonderful characteristics of our loved one.Sometimes, when we look back, we see things we missed when they were still with us.I remember a very quiet member of our community. It was easy not to notice him for he was so discrete.Yet when that presence became an absence I realized how much I missed his measured words, his helpful suggestions and the quiet way he went about helping others and showing his concern. How does one summarize a whole life, be it short or long, tragic or inspiring? What words can we find to honour our human passage through this earth plane?Though we may stumble at the task, it is important to spend time and do our best. When a loved one leaves us, we are reminded in a poignant way, of just how finite we are.Our time here is limited. We need to make the most of it.Putting words to a loved one’s life is the best way we have to hold up the values and lessons they have passed on to us and to express our gratitude for what they gave us.This past month my mom died.Through all the ups and downs of my life she has been my rock, my anchor and my reminder of who I am.When our last parent dies, we become the holder of our own life story and the keeper of the values they have passed down to us.My mom taught me steadfastness, strength in the midst of the storm, love , courage and caring.Though not a woman for showy words of affection she made up for it by the astoundingly beautiful birthday cards that never failed to come in the mail every year.I will miss you greatly Mom.God speed.3) As a member of the clergy I have written many eulogies over the years.I have written about the lives of mothers, fathers, children, good hearted souls and mildly grumpy elders, yet each person clearly made their mark in this world in their own unique and magical way.It is a powerful experience to find a way to weave these parts, these puzzle pieces of memory into a life story in a way that truly honors someone, while also making sure that it is a realistic portrayal of the person.Everyone has a beautiful side, but of course, everyone has their imperfections too.The greatest compliment I can hear after giving a eulogy is “you really got them”.But it is the process of writing a eulogy that is often the most meaningful. To tell a story, you have to take the time to do some digging.Sitting in the living room, asking questions and pulling out the memoirs and stories, you really get to see the powerful mix of emotions that each life brings. There is always laughter, some tears, and sometimes those precious quiet moments of the painful acceptance of loss. This experience of sharing memories is important, because it is really just an opening. It is the beginning of the story telling, the beginning of the process of holding on and letting go, to life and to the reality of a future without a loved one.A eulogy can only give a taste of a person’s life, and even if you can make you way from a person's childhood to their death, what fills in between is only the beginning.Beyond the memories, beyond the stories, it is the relationships, the actions and the holy moments that each person has brought into this world that will be the truest and the strongest memories. This is something that is eternal-it is beyond words, and it does not have an end. This is when we walk out into the world, and take the blessing of the life that was lost, and bring it out into the world our words, our actions and our love.In a very real way, a eulogy reminds us that held with care and strength, even loss can lead to life.4) What a daunting and sacred task, to sum up a life.If you've ever had occasion to deliver the eulogy for friend or loved one, you know this.In a matter of minutes, you try to lift up the essence of an entire lifetime, no matter how long.In the midst of the gathered and grieving, acutely aware of your own grief and loss, you encounter your own mortality.I used to train lay chaplains to design and conduct meaningful rites of passage. In the workshop called "Challenging Memorials" we explored how to craft that pivotal moment in any celebration of life.Students selected a random scenario from the hat, then created a memorial for that person. It could be child lost in a fatal car crash, a mother of young children dying of cancer, murder of a prominent political figure, a teen abducted, a family wiped out in a house fire, a homeless man with no known family. In the devastation after a traumatic death, the celebrant rather than one of the mourners may be the only one able to speak.Like any good novel, the eulogies written were no less real or profound for being fictional.Identifying core themes in lives richly lived, both dark and light were honoured, each person was complex and unique. In the silence at the end someone asked: When it's your ashes in the urn, what do you want to be said about you?" That question resulted in new workshops entitled "Designing Your Own Memorial" and "Leaving a Legacy of Values." Try it.Write your own eulogy as a spiritual practice.Do a thoroughly honest and compassionate life review as you would for a friend or loved one.Mine your story for wisdom gained, good works, failed moments, gifts given and received, challenges met or struggles survived, loves and losses that make you who you are.Accept your own mortality, layer by layer. How do you wish to be remembered ~ while you are still here? One word, four voices - now it's your turn to reflect: The Musique Chez Nous concert series officially got started at the end of September with the annual Howard Brown Memorial Concert, but in many ways the shows begin tonight with a program from pianist Michel Franck. While Franck is the headliner, Music Department Chair Jack Eby said that there is another performer that members of the faculty are eager to hear from: the department’s recently refurbished Steinway piano.“It’s a wonderful, wonderful instrument, and an uncommon one,” Eby told The Record, explaining that there are few pianos like it in North America. The instrument was donated to the department in 1985 by the Bandeen family.“It was a sensational instrument then,” he continued.“We never heard it in its prime in Bandeen (hall) because by the time we moved in it already had ten years of hard labour on it.” After a $26,000 makeover, paid for in part by the family and also with some of the funds from the sale of the university’s Knowlton campus, the instrument is essentially brand new.“(Franck) is playing pieces that demand an instrument like this,” Eby added, “he couldn’t have played on this instrument last year.” According to Sonia Patenaude, who worked on coordinating the series, Franck is returning to Bishop’s with a program of sonatas by Beethoven, Scarlatti, Scriabin and Chopin.“Michel Franck was our guest last year,” she said.“It’s rare that we have the same musicians come year after year, we try to switch it up a little bit, but we were looking for someone who would play this first concert with lots of love and integrity, so Franck was a no- brainer.” After tonight’s concert, the series continues on October 18 with a visit from jazz vocalist Kellylee Evans, and again on October 25 with Baritone Jeremy Huw Williams.Williams’ show is one of two this season, along with the Duo François at the end of January that will premiere a new composition by Andrew MacDonald. This, Eby highlighted, is something people may want to come out and hear because of the fact that it is likely to be more rare in the future.“Andrew’s retiring this year, you know,” said the department chair, who is also taking his leave of the school this year.“Without him here, the odds of hearing him will diminish.” On November 1, Olivier Hebert and the LoFi Octet will play in Bandeen Hall, with Les Voix Humaines taking on Vivaldi’s four seasons the following week. After that the series goes quiet for most of the month before coming back at the beginning of December with the familiar festival of Lessons and Carols at St.-Mark’s Chapel and the BU Singers’ Christmas concert.“In December they welcome guest conductor Jean-Philippe Dutil, who is a very sought-after choral conductor,” Patenaude said, sharing that the program includes works by Britten and Rut- ter, as well as a work called Frostiana that sets some of Robert Frost’s best known works to choral music.Going back to their roots, the choir will be performing that concert in Ban- deen, limiting audience capacity to about 300 over the course of two nights, although the show will be televised by MaTV.In the New Year the Duo François takes to the stage in Bandeen at the end of January, and Bishop’s own Fannie Gaudette plays the hall on February 21.“She’s written music to the poetry of her uncle, Normand Achim, and she’ll be recording an album soon,” Patenaude said, enthusiastic about the idea that the local crowd will be among the first audiences to hear Gaudette’s work. The last visiting artists of the Musique Chez Nous series will be the Sam Kir- mayer Sextet on March 27, although the series officially comes to a close, as usual, with the Bishop’s University Singers’ spring concert in April, the theme of which will be “Broadway.” More information about the individual concerts and the subscription program is available through the Centennial Theatre box office at 819-822- 9692.Michel Franck Follow The What a fascinating world I’ve been missing - I hear sounds most people take for granted. You may not notice the sound your feet make walking in dried leaves but I think it’s pretty cool.Sirens can be painful but birds in trees and the wind are like music. This reminded me of watching the TV series, Bionic Woman back in the day while growing up.It was one of my favourite shows because the character Jaime Summers, played by Lindsay Wagner was bionic. In her story, she was a professional tennis player who had a skydiving accident in which she was critically injured. It was decided to “install” bionic parts which gave her superhuman strength and a bionic right ear, which she used to listen in on the bad guys.I may not have bionic powers but it feels like it with implants in my ears.It is an incredible feeling to hear without straining and feeling tired afterwards.By now you can tell, the operations were successful and leaving the hospital, I could hear my feet hit the floor. It was surreal. And when someone says something in conversation, followed by laughing, I don’t laugh too unless I really think it was funny.Local Sports Throughout my childhood I had difficulty hearing, though it wasn’t until age 12 the severity of it which hit me over the head like a fallen tree.Actually, that’s exactly what happened.Friday , October 4, 2019 Page 17 The Record newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Christine Blanchette A Runner’s Mind Dr.Lea and Christine Blanchette Stapedotomy surgery allows perfect hearing for the ?rst time in my life Canadian decathletes have better chance at gold after leader's apparent injury The Canadian Press The door is open for a Canadian to win the decathlon at the world track and field championships after leader Kevin Mayer retired from the competition with an apparent injury today. The French athlete didn't clear a height in the pole vault, the eighth of 10 disciplines in decathlon.Canadians Damian Warner and Pierce LePage were second and third, respectively, after seven disciplines. No Canadian has ever won the decathlon at the worlds.Mayer is the world-record holder, the reigning world champion and the 2016 Olympic silver medallist. homes, they have lots of photos of me and their dad and me alone or with them. But at my sons’ homes, there are no photos of me or even me with one of them. One son has a group photo with me in it.They have their own photos as parents out prominently though. They seem to like me.I know it isn’t true in all families, but I’m wondering if boys are just not aware of things like this or what? Our daughters- in-law are uncaring.— Dumbfounded Dear Dumbfounded: There are many ways of expressing love.Just because someone isn’t showing you that they love you in all the ways you’d prefer doesn’t mean they don’t.Your sons are inviting you into their homes, and that matters far more than the decor.Let this one go, and be grateful for your time together.Dear Annie: I am writing about my stepdaughter, who is 64 years old.My ?rst husband passed away in an accident when my son and two daughters were very young.Later, I got remarried, to a man named “Steve.” Steve had two sons, and his oldest child was a daughter, “Jill,” who was 13 when we married. At ?rst, Jill seemed ?ne with our marriage. As time went on, it was obvious she was extremely jealous of my daughters and resentful of me.She stayed with her mother, who was an alcoholic and unfaithful to my husband. My husband’s two sons came to live with us.When my daughters grew up and got married, Jill did not come to either of the weddings.Though Jill hardly visited us, we paid for her college tuition, books and car insurance, and we gave her spending money.Once she graduated from college, we paid for her wedding and helped her and her husband with other expenses. As time passed, I would remember Jill and her husband with cards on holidays and on birthdays. She never acknowledged the cards, and after about six years or so I stopped sending all cards except for on Christmas and birthdays.Over the years, Jill had a bad habit of lying, didn’t pay her bills in a timely manner, and she and her husband had to take bankruptcy. My husband cosigned a note at the bank for them. They ?nally paid the loan.My husband didn’t trust her in general because of her lying.Jill’s dad and I were married 40 years. He passed away of complications of Alzheimer’s eight years ago.I cared for him at home during his illness.Jill came to see her dad after his diagnosis rarely, maybe twice a year.My oldest stepson passed away about six years before my husband. The other stepson passed away four months after my husband’s death.I was responsible for his funeral expenses.I have sent text messages, and she will respond to those, but that is the extent of our relationship.I’m sad that we have no contact.I have shared with a few close friends and they told me it’s obvious that she doesn’t want a relationship. What are your thoughts?— A Faithful Reader Dear Faithful Reader: There is really no right answer here. So, my advice is trust your instincts and you can’t go wrong.Continue to reaching out to her if and when you feel the urge to.Heed your gut if it seems that she might be lying or trying to take advantage of you ?nancially at any point.I am so sorry for the major losses you’ve suffered.I hope your stepdaughter can open her heart to you in time, and that you might ?nd some comfort in each other.“Ask Me Anything: A Year of Advice From Dear Annie” is out now! He also had an excellent wine collection.Let’s end the week with two deals featuring this pair. This one occurred in the days when a jump two-no-trump response by South would have shown 13-15 points even in competition, hence his heavy one-no- trump.Kay (West) led the spade three (low from three in partner’s unsupported suit). The bidding placed the spade queen- jack and heart king with South. And as the diamond finesse was working if South needed it, Kaplan (East) realized that the defenders had to take the first five tricks. This required finding West with the club ace, but he was unlikely to have as much as A-Q-x.So, after winning the first trick with the spade king, Kaplan switched to the club king! He continued with the club two.Understandably placing both top clubs with East, South put up his queen at trick three.Imagine his surprise when Kay produced the ace.He then returned a spade.Kaplan won with the king and cashed the jack-seven of clubs for down two.Brilliant!
