made a speech at the Bt, George's Club dinner, concerning the loyalty of the French- Canadians, which drew upon him a bitter attack from the Paris Journal des Debats.Referring to this, Ar John said yesterday .“It is true, as the Journal avers, that I did say the Canadian French had no sympathy with the restless democracy of France, and further, in cans of the invasion of Canada by France she United States would, in all probability, apply the Monroe doctrine. But the idea of a French invasion of Canada is too preposterous to consider seriously. It was in a humorous way that I referred to it when I said in the event of its occurrence the Government ofthe United States would talk to France.1 ssid, too, that Canada was British before the revolution, and that she had always found the United States a pretty good neighbor, and hoped she always should. It is not unlikely that some of the young Frenchmen may talk of the possibilities of invasion from France, just as they talked about Riel, who was a most unworthy and unhernic character, venal and insincere. Why, he made a proposition to me daring the troubles in the North-West, offering to French emotional nature was aroused at his capture and extravagant things were said, just as it is possible they may be said about a possible invasion from France.” Sir John complimented the French Canadians as very religious, as Monarchists, not Democrats and unsym- pathysing with tho ideas of modern France. He also praised the French (‘anadian priesthood as the best moral police ever known, LATEST FROM MONTREAL.A Budget
