Yesterday— Expert Testimony Regarding Explosives.Charles F.Dunbar, of Port Colborne, said :—I am a eontractor. My business is dredging and blasting rock under water.| am now engaged in several contracts at Port Hovinson and Port Colborne, and at Amherst burg aL what is known as the Lime Kiln Crossing. At Port Colborne I used only ultroglycerine in the oil.I am using it every day.1 get it from George M.Mewbray, of North Adams’ Massachusetts. The last shipment | Lad, arrived at Amherstburg on Sunday last, by the New York Central and Canada Southern Railroads.Ordered ‘ Hercules powder,” also & violent explosivo, and partly made of nitro-glycerine, from Cleveland, Ohio, on Friday last.About four weeks ago a firm near Montreal pressad me for an order for what thoy dalled “ Vigorite powder,” and I wld thom they could send me a ton on trial. It has not jet arrived 10 my address, so tar as I know.I am under the impression that the basis of the “Vigorite” is nitro-glycorine.I should think care should be wsed iu handling it.Ihave buen expecting it over two weeks.| buy all these explosives delivered.1 ordered the * Vigorite” through Mr.Beach, the agent of the Hamilton Powder Co, who have wills at Beloeil Quebec.1 asked Mr, Beach 88 toits safety, and he said it was as safe as any explosive use, Ho said the basis of it was nitro-glycerine, aud it was vory effective, fe was to be exploded with an exploder and electricity. The appearance of glycerine is like melted lard whon ready for use.1t comes to me frozen hard, and is not then considered explosive.I have tried to explode it in that condition, and could not. When it arrives at Amherstburg 1 take it to Fox Isiand, in the Detroit River, where I have a magazine. It would take a very har) blow to explode it.1t takes a blow of three hundred vibrations a second to explode it.1 think that if it was in ita proper condition in à car, and was struck by another car, it might ex.lode, ?To the Crown Attorney—I am an American, and formerly lived in Rrie, Pa.I am doing the work at Amherst burg for the American Government by the contract. To the Foreman—I tested the Vigorite powder alone, and found it not sufficiently powerful itself, and intended to use lho consignment with nitro-glycerine.It was only sent on trial.e price was thirty cents a pound, freight to be deducted, 1 sould not call it blasting powder.1 have had no diBeulty in getting ritro- lycorinee shipped. It cumes to me from Mr.bi , ina special refrigerator car madu for the purpose, which ensures it against explosion.A watchman went with the ear and kopt "Ro Me.Wood, ing G.T » representing G.T.R.~1I have been in the blasting business tiuoe 1872.Ifthe Vigorite was ever charged with glycerine it might leak surongh the paper, and might in that state be exploded by the right kind of — a stroke. If it got on the rails I think the wheels of a car would explode it.It would be pretty hard to oxplode it if atruck b fire it would burn away without in- furs.A fire in the ear would not be ikely to cause an explosion. The jolting of the car would not, in my opinion, explode any of these nitro- lyeeriue powdors if they wor property made, hat la, if the nitro-clycuiine Wore not properly mixed, Occinaiy L'ustiog powder would not bave made -10h un explosion, although it might have scattered the pieces farther und killed more people.Tho effect of nitroglycerine “iw to annibilate what it touches or is in the vicinity. To the foroman—~1I do not think the powder which exploded was proper! made.It is often shipped in the ordinary way, and I consider there is no danger from it if it was labelled blasting powder.[should think it was u faiss label. It sheuld have been called Vigorite powder.Carl W.Volney, sworn, said : -1 live is Brockville, and am sn analytic chemist and manufacturer of ‘explosives.Nitroglycerine is an oil iquid, It solidifies above the freezing point of water from 44° to 46 © Fahrenheit. As an explosive, it is distinguished from gunpowder and kindred explosives Ly the suddenness with which it splinters or breuks surrounding objects, without proportion to the power developed. This powor makes it valuable for blasting and valucless for military purposes. The many accidents, an de difficulty of safely transporting it induced tho manufacture of the called nitro glycerive powder. They consist merely of an absording substance and nitro-glycerinne.Sometimes tbe absorbing substance contains also sulphur and saltpetre. The are without doubt safer to transfer and handle than nitro glycerine alone, The principal powders used are dynamite, Horcules powder, Daialin Vigorite, Jupiter, Vulenn, Titan, and Giant powder, iu all of which the active principle is nitro-glycerine, I have examined the wreck at the G.T.Rand it bears in all features the marks of an explosion of the nitro-glycerine, and not from gunpowder. The great thing to be observed in making all these powders is the perfect absorption of the nitro-glycerine to render it solid so that the liquid will remain absorb ed in all circumstances.1 have scen powders overcharged with nitroglycerine, In transit the surplus of nitro-glycerine would leak and the liquid would be very explosive as it it wus pure nitru-glycerine, Fire does not explode any of these powders.Ordinary powdor would not be likely to explode from concussion unless a red heat was produced.I have ship- d nitroglycerine powders, known as olney’'s blasting powder, but never without that designation. It was packed in 8 dry state, in cartridges, secured in a strong box, and covered with hay and sawdust.I put less nitro-glycerine in my powder thao is cluimed to exist in the powders of other manufacturers. When I ship it over the Grand Trunk it is put in a special car very carefully handled. The consumption of these explosives is so great that I do not think a day passes in which some of them are nut shipped on ordinary freight traine. Some control ought to be exercised by the Government over the manufacture of these powders. My ides in regard to the accident is that some of the nitroglycerine must have leaked out of the boxes. My powder was not allowed to be shi until it was analyzed by Dr.Barker Edwards of Montreal.Wm.Goullette, Grand Trunk agent at Bel@il, Que., 21 miles below Montral, sworn, said:— The Hamilton Powder Company had works there, and on the 28th of April he received thirty cases of what purported to be blasting order.consigned to C, F.Dunbar Amherstburg. The shippin bill was signed by Robert A.Powell, agent fur the Hamilton Powder Company. On the same day twenty cases were shipped to G 8.Beach, Port Cul- Lorne ; alsn, Lwo cases to John Barclay, Alton; also, five cases to the Hamilton Powder Company, Montreal.I did not know that they contained anythin, but what they were labelled, or would bave refused to transport it, l have fivquently went shipments of powder to Beach before this. The company Lan to ship in October last, uiwaxs under the same name, I lind ro deu that such à thing as nitro- ô QUEBEC, MONDAY, MAY 12, blast.them into the shed, and loading them into another car for the West.W.J.Spicer, Superintendent of the G.T.R, sworn, said :—The Company would not carry nitroglycerine in any shape whatever. The powder made i" r.Volney was esrried as powder.one of the agents would bave taken the substance which exploded if it had been lubelled nitro-glycerire.In fa.tare I shall recommend to open cars containing explosives at frequent intervals in transit to prevent all danger from fire, &o.A certificate was read from Dr, Buker Edwards, of Montreal, to the effect that the Volney powder was more safe than gunpowder, and requiring no more than the ordinary care used in handling explosives. At 11 p.m.the inquest adjourned till | Friduy evening.COMING EVENTS The relation which exists betwoen | the earth and the other planets of the wolar system is likely to be attentively considered during the next two years, | when a phenomenon which has not occurred bifore, probably in the lis tory of the world, will take place ; namely, 8 conjunction of all the planets which will be on the sare meridian at the sume time and thus bring all the d'rection at once. This extraordinary event will occur in 1881, and will be the herald of other equally startling phenomena. What the effect of this distnrbance of planetary equilibrium will be there is no ibility of knowing, but it is well known that certain terrestrial phenomena of a sarious kind are simultaneous with’ the proximity of the planet Jupiter to tho sun, The sun spot periods, with all their attendant results to us, are dependent upon the great planet of our system.hat a Étartance of the sun's condition the conjunetiun of all the planets will bring about we leave to astronomers to calculate, but we have a key to tho situation in two chanco | observations. In 1862 an English astronomer, watching the sun's limb, observed an enormous tongue of flame shoot from it into space, bend as if swept by a hurricane, and exhibit other phenomena.Glancing at an electric needle beside him, ho observ { ing powder at Montreal, addressed to | C.I.Dunbar, Amherstburg, unloading i Se ING MERCURY Qrehec, Montreal, Ottawa and Occidental better scientific heads than Alembert and Levcisier; a nobility more elevated thao ours of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries ; women more charming than those who have smiled upon our philosophy ; an clan more extraordinary than that of our Revolution; more readiness in embracing noble sims; more courage; more sacoir vivre; & loftier temper in fucing death; in a word, a society more sympathetic and spiritual than that of our futhers—thon shall we be conquered, We are not yet.We have not lost the audience of tho world.” What rare, polished and incisive eloquence! The delivery of the speech has fairly enraged the high political und learned circles at Berlin, But it is felt on all hands that much as the iron band of Bismarck and the sword of Von Moltke have done for Germany, the pen of Renan has made a diversion in favor of La Belle France that wiil a great way to solace France under her territorial losses, and to make her susceptible sons and daughters feel that in many respects Old France is the foremost nation in the world.LATEST FROM RIVER PORTS.Father Point, May 12.8.8.City of London outward at 7 a.m.; weather hazy ; light west wind.River du Loup, May 12.Four inward bound veasels in sight ; steamer Resolute outward; weather cloudy ; light S.W.wind, Fox River, May 12.One ship inward ; weather hazy nud warm ; strong 8 W.wind.Grand Etang, May 12.One ship inward; weather clondy and warm ; light S.W.wind.Magdalen River, May 12.One three-masted steamer here at wix a.m.inward; weather calm and cloudy. The total amount promised on bebalf of the Wesleyan Methodist Thanksgiving Fund already roaches newly £1 12.000.It is believed that the pecuniary result of the movement will exceed the anticipations of the sanguine. So far £16.000 have been appropriated to removing the debts or towards the erection of the new college for ministerial students in the midland counties.—————— A visitor observed to Misa nier that he seem.od to have none of his own pictures “Too dear, my aear madsm,”smid the great artist; I can't pr them "— Paris Newspaper A Saratoga girl writes homo— “There are plenty of males hero lisping, silly, hair-parted-in-middle swells ; but oh for the sight of a genuine man I” THE PAIN-KILLER is an almost co: tain cure for CHOL» kA, and without doubt, oem more successful in curing this terrible diceass than any vther knows remedy, or even the most Eminent and “kilfel cians. In India, Africa and Chine, where this droad.Tel disense is ever more or leas prevalent, the Pala-Killer ta cunsbders! by the natives, as ™ pean eas SURE MEMEDY.re residents la ‘hose | NEW ADVERTISENENT:.NOTICE HOBE WISHING TO GIVE UP GAS.Best Coal Oil Only 15 Cents per Gallon.A large assortment of Patent Founts to fit Gas Fixtures.Iliumiustors, shade, and à variety of other goosts.F.0.VALLERAXD, Noa, 93 Mountain and 33 Moire Dame kts May 10, 1879, 3 DINNER - — a Evening Dresses V ‘BEB HAVE JUST OPENED A VERY choice selec tion of the Latest Novelties in DINNER and EVENING DRESSKS in #'l the rick ad boautif-1 shades ‘or the presont reason, und at moderate prices, vis .Broche ations, with plata to match.Haye Satius, with plain to match, Rays velv-ta (Blk ) with pluin to matol Gros ‘Graine, ail the new col ra, Silk Grenadive Dresses.Broche Qrenadine Dresws.Ball Ur un 8, New Textures, Blrok Ouz,vas (irenadines, euperior moke.Fancy Black dr-nidines, for overskirts Choice” Nillinery Just Received.Very rich Fringes aud other Trimwin « for Dresses Ribbons in Faiile and Satin in all the new colours Rou!
