The Quebec mercury

The imposture is alleged to have been concocted in order to prevent an inquiry into the circumstances under which the prince died.We have seen this story before, and believe it to have been contradicted by General E Webb, of the New York Courier and En- “ quirer, who knows the “ past” and present Louis Napoleon to be the selfsame individual.—-«- How Americans Administer Justice.—-A blunder, very characteristic of the administration of criminal justice in New York, will be found noticed in our Law reports to-day.It appears that on a recent motion in the Court of Oyer and Terminer to arraign Francis Enright for the manslaughter of one Daniel J lorrigan, counsel for the prisoner moved to have the trial postponed under plea that an important witness for the defence was “ absent in Eu-r[1Pc- ’ The Court, to guard against imposition, directed that an affidavit supporting the plea should be made ; whereupon an affidavit was drawn, averring that the witness in question “ had left New York only three weeks ago in the steamer Connaught, bound f»r Ireland”—that unfortunate vessel, as we all know, having been burned within a day’s sail of Boston, on her voyage from Galway to that port, about the time indicated.Nevertheless, the venerable Judge of the Oyer and Terminer accepted the affidavit as satisfactory, and the order for postponement was made.—N.Y.Times.t in.-18 Ca'jiu aaj 'Jj Sticrage l'as* •ngi'ra.— Tut 1 43, SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.P^r “ Prrsia.” (Com) il d fnm the London Shipping A M«.rcan* till Gnzvtie, from the 2Gth to tbe 27th Uetober, inclusive.)
