Titre :
The Quebec mercury

recovery.Drinking Fountain.— Through the liberality of a spirited private citizen living near the spot, the Upper Town market has just been supplied with that great desideratum a drinking fountain It is adapted for the refreshment alike of man and beast. It consists of a basin of cut stone resting on an octagonal block which is supported by four dark pillars of polished lime stone, wiih white marble capitals. The water descends from the upper basin and issuing through four apertures between the pillars, falls grace fully with four basins at their base. The design,» pretty one, has been well carried out by Mr.Morgan, sculptor though it is shown at great disadvantage for two reasons. The site is not a con spicuotis one, being on low ground, near the place allotted to the carters and ever crowded by them as a stand. Then the flow of water into the upper basin is at present too light and exposed to the wind so as at times to blow over the s’des when it streaks the stone for the ri-st the day, making it look like a shapeless and confused pile of stonework, without symmetry of any kind. This shower bath nlso frightens the horses when they drink, and at times sends down an unexpected shower on the persona who are using the water.A small flow of water through a large mouthed jet would we think, obviate this, if allowed merely to overflow and full into the basin. It is generally considered that the waters of the Ring Fountain might be advantageously opened to the thirsty, as it stands in a much used thoroughfare.THE CHAMPLAIN STREET MUR DER.Tbe Coroner’s Jury, ufteran investigation into the death of Emery, the sailor, which has lasted seven days, gave a verdict on Thursday evening, of Wilful Murder against Thomas ileyden, sou of a hoarding house keeper living in Chain-' plain s'reet, and William Walsh, steamboat steward, of St.Louis suburbs.Ileyden is still at large.Walsh is in custody.Launch.—Early this morning we proceeded to the shipyard of Thomas C.Lee, Esqr., to witness the launch of a vessel of 1.200 tons.On reaching the place, the workmen were busily employ- ed removing the blocks from under her, and a little after eight, the vessel, which for strength and beauty cannot be stir-passed, glided into her native el ment, with all the ease and gracefulne>s of a swan, amid the cheers of the workmen, and the assembled hundreds, among whom we were glad to see many fair faced. There can be no doubi, whatever, that she will prove as fast a sailor, and ns seaworthy as the “ Shooting Star,” “ Arthur the Great,” the another large vessel has been laid in this shipyard.THE PRINCE’S VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES.The New Yorkers, now that they have the promise of a visit from the Prince of Wales, are in much the same position as the man who got the elephant : they are quite at loss to know what to do with him.And their anxiety seems to be heightened by the fact that the Prince is to lay aside all Royal State while passing through the Republic, and travel simp'y as Lord Renfrew. The dilUculty is to give him a reception worthy of his exalted position, and at the same time such an one as will not give an opportunity to the civic dignitaries of intruding themselves too prominently upon His Royal Highness. The New York Herald thinks an address from the Council to the Prince might be allowable, as an evidi nee of their corporate entity, but that can only be permitted on condition “ that " they get some decent, well-washed, and « ordinarily li'erate person to read it ” But something more than an Address, even should it be presented decently, is necessary. What is to be done 1 Our cotemporary says :— “In coDiuhinjr, how*fer, tho nscsssity of keeping down the obtriisire elements of Tultjiiritjr which are so apt to shame us on these occasions, we must not lose sight of the fact that we have yet to mark our sense of the honor conferred upon us by tbe Prince’s visit by a demonstration of some kind. The delicacy that wo fee! iu dealing'with the matter might otherwise be construed into indiUVrenco in reference to it.We would suggest, ns one of the most appropriate and most interesting to our young visitor, in view of the recent efforts to establish a similar organization in his own country, a grand review of the Governor und military authorities of our volunteer militia.Me would thus be the better enabled to appreciate the fact jhat the true strength of a country lies not in its standing army or its navy, but iu the patriotic zeal and military education of the masses. This is woith a trip across the Atlantic to acquire, and it may exercise, through the eonvictions of the young Prince, an important influence on the future security and welfare of his
