The Quebec mercury

papers of the 14th April having been placed in our hands this forenoon, through the politeness of R.Shaw, Ksq., agent of the steamship United Kingdom, which urrived this morning in thirteen and a half days from the Clyde, notwithstanding a delay of twenty-four hours in the ice.Despite the “ lying bulletins” issued by the Neapolitan authorities, as to the agitation in the island of Sicily, say the latest English journals, we have authentic newa of the extension of the revolt and the deter-minstion of the people to resist the Royal authority. The inhabitants of Palermo fought with determined courage, nobly dying at the barricades, and it has become necessary to garriaon the island with 30,000 men, for whose immediate shipment the mercantile steamers were being called into requisition.Every soldier removed from Italy to Sicily makes the Kirg’s position more insecure at Naples, and accordingly wo Irarn, says the Greenock Advertiser, of the 14th inst", that the circulars to the Imperial law-officers in the departments : one recommending them not to neglect pro-eecuting clerical ^offenders, without regard to rank, for any infraction of the organic law* of the Gazeit# contains the appointment by His Excellency, of Gordon Watte Leggatt, Esq., of Osgood Hall, Barrister at Law, (brother of H.P.Leggatt, Esq of this city) to be Judge of the County of Essex Canada West.THE ARCHBISHOP.There is little ho}»e of the recovery of His Grace the Archbishop, who, we regret to learn, is much worse to-day.The meeting of the friends of education, of which we spoke in our lust number, although not very numerously attended, included several of our leading men, and a fair sprinkling of Indies. We noticed among those present Messrs.R.Hamilton, C.N.Montizambert, M.G.Mountain, Dr.Maraden, W.H.Jeffery, W.Petry, G.Irvine, W.Dickinsun, the Rev.G.V.Houseman, and several other clergymen. The chair was taken by Lieut.Colonel Rhodes, who stated that it was deaigned to unite the cities of Quebec and Montreal in the effort now making to enlarge and consolidate the Collegiate Institution at Lsnnoxville The particulars would be explained by the Rev.Dr.Nico'ls and the Rector of the school, the Rev.J.W.Williams, M.A., who had been invited to come before the meeting and make a public statement of the objects they had in view. For his own part, he had children to educate, and was glad to have an establishment of standing and character in the country, to send them to.He thought that most children benefited by being educated away from injudicious parental interference.lie then introduced to the meeting the Rev.Principal Nicolls, who, after a good many remarks upon the constitution and progress of the College, such as the number of lay members in its corporation (10 to 9, if we understood him correctly), its liberal character towards members of other communions besides the Church of England, and other interesting points of information, called attention to the immediate object of their visit to Quebec. The Corporation of the College is raising funds for the erection of buildings and for the partial endowment of the school, including the establishment of a Professorship of French. The sum of $20,000 is wanted for Building purposes, and $30,* 000 for Endowment.Something over $6,000 had already been promised for tho former object ; and for the latter, eleven shares of $000 each hud been taken, entitling the holder of each share to present a pupil free of charge for tuition, in perpetuity. He mentioned also that the building could not be completed till next midsummer twelvemonth; subscriptions payable at six or nine, or even twelve months, would be no less acceptable than ready money. The School is to bo placed in the same ground with tho College, and instruction to be given in it, to a certain extent, by the Professors of the College. The Rev.Mr.Williams then proceeded to say that he spoke with some confi.denee upon the subject of education, having had many years experience, and having also studied its theory carefully. He thought a system which taught n little welt and thoroughly, far better than one which carried the pupil superficially over a great extent of ground. He would prefer a man or a boy whose powers were trained and practised, to one whose head was merely crowded with a motley jumble of foete. To teach thoroughly, it was necessary to reclassify the pupils in all subjects, as is done at Lennoxville, though this method was more troublesome and required a larger staff of teachers. He considered classical studies combined with mathematics, the best discipline for the mind, and though classical studies were optional with those who were preparing for niercunlile life, he had no doubt that classical s'tidies would assist rather than impede such studies us book-keeping.The study of languages he thought to be of tho highest importance. The French language is already taught all through the school, and he hoped other modern languages would be provided for, and especially German.lie spoke also of the importance of developing the powers of the body along'with those of the mind.He could teach a boy to avoid *« hitting a catch” at cricket, and had himself learned the art of skating since he came to Canada. He alluded also to the heal'hfulness of the locality, and the facility of communication with the cities by railroad and telegraph. The Rev.gentleman’s opinions were received with marks of strong and decided approbation. We wish all Quebec had been there to hear them.Mis views of the subject of education would be not only interesting but instructive to most persons.Dr.Marsden, in moving a vote of thanks to the Rev.gentlemen, for the very able and lucid manner in which they had brought the management and condi.tion of the affairs of the College before the meeting, expressed the great satisfaction with which he had listened to Mr.Williams’ remarks, and confirming with much point and foard the mail steamers for New Vork and Portland which called at Queenstown, and who hac left their cara and members of their families in the town, were taken to America, because the steamer got under weigh as soon as the mails were put on lioard, and there were no meant of sending the twenty-six on shore.Three persons were lately arrested and judged to bn
