and the same principle of allegiance to authority which induced the conductors of the Mercury to support Lord Metcalfe in his resistance to our preeent Canadian constitution, is now transferred to that constitution, and we can in no way suffer its existence to be ignored, or the plain,distinctive, national duties of Canadian subjects of Queen Victoria to be in any way confounded with the widely different duties of European or Asiatic or other subjec's beyond our Atlantic border.Acting therefore conscientiously and scrupulously on this principle, w»e refused to permit one reproachful line to be inserted in this paper in reference to Mr.McGee’s career previous to his becoming a resident M Canada.The Parliament of Great Britain had commanded us to obey Responsible Government,—that is to say, the Qu ecu and Parliament of Canada, we obeyed accordingly, and therefore while we disapprove of rebellion in Ireland, just as we disapprove of rebellion everywhere, we thougbijthat Mr.McGee should no more b.» ostracised for having rebelled in Ireland, than if he had rebelled in Russia, or Virginia, or Turkey.VVc considered that under the system of Responsible Government the people of Canada could recognise no political offence not committed on the soil of Canada, and against their distinctive constitution ; but Mr.McGee has chosen to reject that œgis which would have protected him, had he confined himself to tha single-minded discharge of his public duty as a Representative of the Canadian people.He has thought fit to tell Canadian subjects of Irish birth, that they should bear arms against the Queen of this Province, or rather kingdom, for such is it in fact, such is it by the superscription of the current coin, and such is it by the Queen’s title as set forth in the India Bill.It therefore becomes our peremptory duty to brand the conduct of Mr.Thomas D’Arcy McGee as false to bis trust, perfidious and insulting to the Canadian people, and treasonable to the Canadian Sovereign.Tha very instant Mr.McGee became a member of the Législature of Canada, he made it his duty to become a Canadian.Thk Mbmbbrs or thc Canadian Lk- OISLATOBB HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE IrISH- min, Englishmen, or Scotchmen, but Canadians.They have no right to pay this oountry a divided duty, or render it a limited service.Their whole efforts must tie given to this country, must be given with an eye ts its interests alone, and not to any other spot of earth under the canopy of heaven.Their very allegiance should be given to the Queen not as Sovereign of the land of their birth, but of their adoption; as head of the Constitution of Canada and not as head of the Constitution any other Country.This plain fact n sometimes lost sight of by that most troublesome class of would bo politicians, the men who insist on bein£ “ more Royalist than the King.” Its advantages are nevertheless obvious.If the European Royalist is to ignore the Provincial Constitution, erect in his mind an imaginary Canada with a Government which has been obsolete since Do Ualdimand’s day, and refuse to recognise the peculiar and distinctive character of public duty in Cauada, the European and bring them to severe punishment, us Grant made to an Exhibition in Montreal.—It is said to be determined by the Government to put in the Estimates a sum of $20,000 for the purposes of a great k'xliihition to be held in Montreal on the occasion of opening the Victoria Bridge.THE LOST S IE AMER.Halifax, March 2.—An official letter has been received from Mr.Townsend, governmeni agent at the wreck* He says itjis i.ovv ascertained, beyond doubt, that no survivors exist.* Only three bodies have been found, one woman, one man, supposed a fireman, and one child two years old reb.'l will of course do the same ; and what loyalty will gain by it has been finely illustrated at St.Patrick’s Church.they not only destroyed private property but by the act shewed contempt, to say the least, lor the majesty of the Corporation.Since our issue of the 21st ultimo, at which time we introduced the waterlogged ship to our readers, even's have transpired of moment to the Water Works and the citizens.Mr.Aubin— the gentleman (of Le Fantasque) who was nameless in the debate of the 21st— hat turned out to be the great “ water medicine” then talked of by the members who would not take his name in vain.Nor have they, for he is associated with Mr.Keefer, or rather in the wisdom of the Council, Mr.Keefer is associated with him, to enquire into the hidden mysteries of the Quebec Water Works.The Council has voted $1000 to obtain the opinion of Messrs.Aubin and Keeler on this important subject.We understand that Mr.Aubin took a pleasant drive to Lorette, and then had an agreeable sojourn in Montreal, after which he employed himself assiduously in constructing, or causing to be constructed, a model of Water Works as they thould be.Mr.Keefer has not yet appeared to take his share in the works, and it is doubtless the opinion of Mr.Aubin’s supporters in the Council that he hud belter s'ay away and give the latter gentleman a chance of astonishing the natives unassisted.On Friday evening las*, the model was at work on the large drawing table in the Roud Surveyor’s office, and furnished considerable information and amusement to a crowd of scientific and enquiring minds, and some relaxation to a few overtasked City Councillors, who dropped in from the heat of debate in the Council Chamber to cool their feverod brains by a sight of the limpid streams that issued from the toy fountain.The apparatus consists of two upright boards, about four feel in height, and secured in position by appropriate ties, with three or for little tin cans through which run miniature pipes supplied with miniature cocks, mid a huger can on top of all.The can on top is supposed to represent the Chateau d’Eau, and the small cans a number of tanks which the talented projector proposes placing nt different levels in the city.The wotks are set iu motion by pouring the contents of another large tin can of cylindrical shape into the upper tin can of the apparatus.The cylindrical tin can is supposed to be emblematical of the River St.Charles above the dam.The whole is then operated by opening the cocks, and the water runs out quite ua'u-rolly through the orifices of the miniature pipes at the different levels.The thing is unique, and well calculated to prove to the most obtuse, tit a glance, that water, if not confined, will seek the lowest level on which to rest.It also tends to shew, what every one know», that the orifices farthest from the head, at regards level, will discharge more water than those of the same size which are higher.The small tin ca s ore meant as checks to the velocity of the water, or in other words as open reservoirs, each intended to have a head or pressure of its own, the use of which in increasing the supply of water practically we cannot understand.As our hydraulics are of the old school, we cannot see any thing in the device but what we have mentioned, alihough Mr.Aubin explained the affair to a numerous and apparently observant audience.The only thing in whicli we could see our way clear was that the apparatus was destined to increase the supply of xcater by diminishing the pressure, an assertion, to say the least, sufficiently paradoxical: so much did it appear so to us that we were forced to banish it from our mind ; after which we passed a very agreeable half hour in listening to a long and energetic speech in the Council, on the subject of sixteen dollars which the Finance Committee .had refused the Road Committee to plunk a certain portion of Champlain street.We had almost forgotten to mention that the projector of the abovementioned model gave it as his unqualified opinion that if we had a reservoir where Mr.Baldwin projected it, on the heights ou'side of Lewis ga'e, we should get less water than we now do, which may he the reason that the Corporation have not built one.As we hope soon to see the joint re The cargo and materials are scattered along shore from Tusket round Cape Sable as far east as Ragged Island.A considerable quiuitity of goods ore* drifting ashore at the mouth of Shelburne Harbor.The country people, generally, arc acting honestly.Three stores have been hired at Barrington in which to collect the property, which is of considerable value.The ship’s articles have been found, showing seventy-four crew.No passenger list has been found, and the ruiriored finding of the clearance is untrue.The only passengers who were known to be in the Hungarian were William Boultenhousei of Sackville, N.B., and Doctor Barrett of New York, whose box was found, containing a number of letters from his wife and daughter.Particular care will be taken of any bodies that may be found.Marks will be kept and they will be buried in separate graves for recovery by friends.The mails are soaked to a pulp, but will be sent to Halifax by the cutter.Hon.Joseph Howe, Provincial Secretary, exhibits much interest and promptitude concerning the wreck.LATER.Bariiingtcn, March 2,—7 p.m.—Three trunks have been found, one belonging to Margaret Robertson of Montreal, one to Robert Martin of Toronto, and one to W.R.Crocker, of Norwich, Conn.Nothing further has been found to enable the indentificaiion of any passengers, and no more bodies have been found.The revenue cutter Daring” is here taking on hoard the mails for Halfax.reasonable caution on the part of the own* ers of the line and their employees.The unanimous desire of the people of Canada is to deal most generously with those who have risked, and we fear lost much in order to establish and maintain a Canadian Ocean Steam .Verrier, up to the point where liberality becomes a public wrong, and defeats its own object* alleviating their sufferings and promoting the education of the Canadian youth.•On th« coast, we presume, ns the chnnee of nnj survivor having been picked up bjr home bound vessels enunot be removed by Mr.Town-send’s inspection.—Ed.Q.Mercury.Svmpathv with the Pope.—In answer to nn appeal made by IIis Grace the Administrator of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Quebec, mass meetings of the faithful were held on Sunday last, in Laval University, and the four churches, of St.Patrick, St.Jean, St.Roch, and S*.Sauveur.We regret that our repoit of the proceedings is crowded out of this number.Halifax papers, by this morning's mail inform us that a sleigh containing the mails from Pictmi to Amherst, was lately lost through the ice on Tntamogouche Ray, with two horses attached.'I he driver and several passengers, with the mails, were providentially saved.Serions apprehensions are entertained in Toronto that Mr.Hogan, M.P.for Grey, has met with some fatal accident or been foully dealt with.Nothing has been heard of him since the 8lh of December.He was last heard of when he was living at the Anglo American Hotel in Hamilton.rrHE Water Works are approaching a'Crisis.On Thursday night last, su me evil disposed person or persons, not huv.ing the fear of the law or the Police be- Aubin ami Keefer, we apparatus erected at Lorelte, by Mr.Lee, ’ ?ia" l«»ve lltest.bjec for ll.e present j to increaseIhe eupply of water to the h''1 wtll not «tve up all hopes of a reset-Mr.Lee gave due notice of the vo,r* city.event, by letter, to tha Corporation on Friday evening during their session us mentioned in our report published on Saturday.The Water Committee will therefore be thrown on its own resources for some time as a Hyruulic agent.Nuw this is not right.Mr.Lee bad applied for an extension of time to make improvements in his apparatus, alleging us a reason, that lie had not had sufficient lime to complete his arrangements ;
