all made last winter, but the number includes those that had teen stuck in the previous winters. There were about 6,000 pieces of dimension timber cut besides.Gilles Bros., of Br edde, cut 82,000 logs in all.The mills in Hull cut 260,000, or rather that is the total number that has gone to them his season. The number ot logs that hwe passed the Chaudière for otl e m ils is as follows : W.McClymont & tV., 440U0; Hamilton Brothers, 35COJ, and Edwatd’s Mill, 7,000.These liguies, including the 62,000 of Gillies Bros., give the total, 1,030,000 logs, or somewhere in the neighoourhood of a quarter ofamillion more than last year, wh ch shows that an impetus has been given to trade, and there is a brighter look-out now than was last year, it is a noticeable fact that railroads are nuw being more generally utilized for the carrying of lumber this season than they ever were before.Mill owners generally talk more cheerfully as to the prospects of next season’s trade.Winnipeg, Man., October a sense of shame. The address seemed the result of terrible remorse, but every word was known to be false. When the sentence was read Cooper screamed, and was led away in a seeming agony of tears. The lightness of the sentence is due to an agreement that the prisoner’s previous record should not be considered.GERMANY ILLNESS OP BISMARCK.Beblin, October 26.—Leon Hardt, Minister of Justice, navigation, which oould be done at very trifling expense, through the Prairie soil, to eonneet the Saskatchewan with Lake Manitoba, it would prolong and open the Saskatchewan navigation through Lakes Manitoba and Winnipeg. The Govern-ment should offer a subsidy for a steamer service upon the Saskatchewan ani Assi-mbotne at once, and while our railroad is building it would be the means of facilitating and cheapening its construction in tbe transport of men and materials, and in the meantime be an an easy means during the summer season for emigrants going into the western country. The Hudson’s Bay Company have now a steamir on the Saskatchewan, but mainly for the accommodation of their own trade, and do not pretend to carry freight for the general public, except when its suits their own convenience.I had almost omitted naming that I had the pleasure of seeing M.H.Gault, M.P., one of your city members, who I met at that if the line had been lengthened about three and a half miles by a divergence either to the south or north of the present line, it would have saved the country the enormous cost of many miles of rock cutting and filling, which has called for an outlay on the part of the contractor of plant to the extent of a quarter of million of dollars, and has cost the country a fabulous sum over what it ought to have cost it.Now I do not undervalue the importance of shortening the distance on national through line like the Pacific.a „ , - - Canadian Yet there is a limitation to it, as a sound policy, but if it is a policy to shorten the line, why in the name of every thing that is just should the same Government who, to save three and a half miles in Saction 15, have incurred such enormous expenditures should have gone 23 miles out of their way to that extent to lengthen the road by extending the railway to Winnipeg? What Mr.Mackenzie was thinking of 1 cannot imagine when he consented to the branch to Winnipeg on the east side of the river. He decided to take the road—after Poplar Point some cays since, on his way to Portage la Prairie, and who seemed very much pleased with everything that he saw in the country and scarcely credited
