the recent small arrivals of wheat from Jabroad, and consequent inroads upon stocks at home, give prices a degree of firmness, the continuance of which is not by any means assured ; and then, on the other side, supplies abroad are known to be abundant, and there is at present nothing to lead to speculation based on a bad harvest in this country.Thus for the time the situation of things remains quiet, a result much aided by the favourable weather for spring sowing now experienced, which takes iarmers away from the markets.The wheat plant, being more forward in the South of Europe, appears to have been un covered by snow, and thereiore hurt to some extent by recent severe frosts ; but.beyond the unhealthy appearance which easterly winds give to vegetation, no damage can as yet be reported here.” National Insurance Coupant.—The promoters of this company, at the last session of Parliament, having secured a charter, present their prospectus in this morning’s issue, and an opportunity is now afforded for the subscription of stock, the authorized cafital being $2,000,000.It is the iuten-tion of the directors to extend the business of the company throughout the Dominion, and as there is ample room for well conducted business of this kind, there is no reason why the National should not share the public patronage.Mr.Goff, who has had considerable experience in fire insurance, is named as manager pro.tem, and we understand a gentleman competent to dis charge the duties of Secretary comes irom the United States, favorably endorsed.It is proposed to call up 10 per cent, in the mean time.Stock-books are open at Mr.Goff’i office, 241 St.James Street.Canada Company.—The London Econom ist of the 27th ultimo says that the sales of land by this company for cash, during last year, showed an in crease of 1,106 acres as compared with 1.873 ; but in the quantity leased there was a diminution of 2,602 acres.The average price per acre was 98, lid.higher.Lessees converted 32,499^ acres into freeholds, being an increase of 1,729 acres ; and the NO.85 wsy above described.On the whole there would be little chance of even a temporary rise in the bank rate taking place if the reserve were only a little larger than it is.The dullness of trade, and the favourable state of the continental exchanges, would all point to cheapness, or at least to the maintenance of the present rates.But some doubt must necessarily be felt in the present state of the reserve, with the prospect of its being diminished by jf 1,500,000 or ±‘2,000,000 in the next two returns, in consequence of the usual eftlax of coin and notes to the country, and quite apart from the foreign movements of coin and bullion, which can hardly he much in our favour unless the continental exchanges should rise still higher.’’ At New York Gold opened at 115J, advanced to 115£, but subsequantly declined, and closed weak at 116.Sterling Exchange has dropped to 486.Five twenties are quoted at 15^, Interest to carrv rules at 2 per cent .In stocks a large business is reported to have been transacted.Most lines have ruled pretty steady, at the close, however, showing a fractional decline from the highest points touched during the day.The ttuctuations were :— 10 o’e 12 o’c 2 o’c 4 o’c Pacifie Mall.44 WU Telegraph.78| N Y Central.101| Erie.30 i Lake Shore.,.74J Kook Island*.103^ NW Common.45J Do Preferred.58 J 44 78 J 102| 29i 75i 44 78^ 75J 43* 78 102 29* 75* 103* 103* 103* St Pau!.Ohio and Miss .Union Pacific .0 O & i O.Toledo à Wabash.451 58 46 39* 28* 71* 6* 15# 45* 58 39* 28* 72f «! . . 15* stand-still on 72 28* is far generally employed, and the gether is unsatisfactory.” British Iron Trade —The London Economist of the 27th ultimo contains the following regarding the condition of the iron trade:—In the iron trade production has been a little more active, owing simply to the approach of holidays, but there is no steady improvement to be seen, quarter-dav meetings being at hand, when leading quotations may be reduced.Inquiries for pig-iron have in the meanwhile largely increased just lately, the demand coming chnily from rail manufacturers ; in Middlesboro’ a busier season than last is expected ; on the West Coast, Derbyshire, and the West Biding heavy iron is also reported in considerable request.Birmingham and Sheffield very dull.Coal is generally drooping still, stocks accumulating at the collieries in all the districts, w hether supplying it for house or manufacturing purposes.Wages are the subject of considerable discussion, the Derby sliding scale causing dissatisfaction.as the North of England rail makers find themselves paying 10s per ton more than their competitors.At the end of June a wholesale revision may be expected.Terminal Facilities.—The absence of terminal facilities has been one of the greatest difficulties the people of New York have had to contend with for some years hack.Every possible and imaginable effort has been put forth to provide the necessary accommodation, bur, although money has been lavishly spent by private companies and Government, the causes of complaint are not yet removed.The people of the American Commercial Metropolis are now, however, making one more effort to provide increased facilities for the manipulation of the trade which centres there.The wharfs are being enlarged and improved, storage accommodation is being provided, and under the direction of Commodore Vanderbilt a tunnel is being constructed under the North Elver to connect the city with the New Jersey shore.A charter for the latter project lias been obtained ; a company organised with an enormous capital, and the work is progressing rapidly.Regarding this scheme the Boston Advertiser says : “ This large enterprise, when it is carried out, will remove, perhaps, the greatest difficulty with which New York merchants have now to contend.The loss of time and the great relative Jcost of transporting goods from Jersey City to New York make a difference which may be overcome, amounting in value to many millions annually.Witb adequate facilities it is estimated that the annual saving in the single item of cotton would be $400,000 ; of flour $225,000, and corresponding amount on nearly every article of merchandize.The prospect of such a saving as this has given to the scheme of tunnelling the river a new impulse which bids fair this time to be entirely successful.The tunnel when completed will afford facilities for five hundred trains of twenty freight cars each per day, without interfering with other traffic.The route or line of tunnel will cover the various points upon which all the existing railroad lines concentrate, and connections can be made with them at any place that may be desired.” Financial.—We have no new features of interest to notice in the financial situation.Although bankers still exercise considerable caution in their operations, less diffi-oulty is experienced both by mercantile and speculative borrowers in obtaining accom modation, and rates of interest are easy compared to what they were a few weeks ago, when 15 per cent, was the minimum for GO and 90 day Bills.Time loans now being made at 10 per cent., and in ceptional cases at a slight reduction from that rate ; while for call and short-dated loans 1 13) 8 are the ruling rates, a moderate business being dona on the “ street” among the brokers at the inside figure The market for mercantile paper remains practically unchanged.Sterling Exchange was fairly active, sales having been made in the early part of the day at 9* 13) 9*, and subsequently, on the strength of a reported decline at New York, round amounts were Business was nearly at a the Stock Exchange here this forenoon, the operations reported consisting of a few shares of Bank of Montreal and Telegraph, both of which were weaker, particularly the latter.Other lines were extremely dull with no mat&rial alteration in piices.For shares Bank of Montreal 190| was accepted, being a reduction of * per cent from yesterday’s, closing price.Buyers of Ontario advanced their price to ill without inducing holders to sell.Peoples was in demand at 108*, but there were no shares offering.Molsons was quiet at 116* and Toronto at 195 ; 115* could be obtained for the one and i90 for tba other, Jacques Cartier was offered at 99* without finding buyers, the highest bid being 97*.Mer-chants was steady at 114 ; 113* was offered without leading to transactions.Union would bring 103, and Mechanics 89.Royal Canadian wag firm at 98* ; with buyers at 97*.Commerce opened at 136, and subsequently declined to 135| ; but buyers views being } per cent below that rate no business was done.Yille Marie was quiet at 101* and Metropolitan at par.Hamilton could be purchased at 97, and Maritime at 89.Exctange was enquired for at 105*, but there were no shares offering.Montreal Telegraph was much weaker, the sales were, 15 at 176; 10 at I, and 15 at 175.Dominion Telegraph was held at 108, but there were no buyers over 105{.City Passenger was easier, the quotation for sellers being 181*.7 Corporation 6 per cent bonds were dealt in to the extent of $10,000 at 93*.Graphic was quoted at 27, and Montreal Permanent Building Association at 113.At the Afternoon Board the market for Montreal and Telegraph was iveaker, the sales reported in the former were 30 at 190J ;
