its sittings, leaving tbe hon.gentleman's reputation lying under a cloud. He would say no more about this, hut he thought the understanding that had been arrived at should be carried out.Tbe House waited with interest for the Government’s reply.Sir John Thompson rose with great warmth and protested that tbe attack which had been made was most undeserved and unprovoked. The honorable gentleman had stated that it was the fault ot the Government.Mr.Davies—“ I never did " Kir John Thompson—The honorable gentleman stated distinctly that it was the fault of tbe Government.Mr.Davies—" I did not.” Sir,John Thompson—The honorable gentleman said tbe Government was to blame.(“Oh! Dr.Armstrong, of Ottawa, thought h* could vote for the report of both majority an 1 minority. He was sure that a student could study as well in summer, with the exception of a wetk or to, and he seconded Pro!.Scnm-,,-er i amendment Dr.McLaren said that the scheme of Prof.Serimger had been mentioned in tbe committee and wae discarded because It had been pn po«ed and sent to Presbyteries years ago and rejected.Tti "Rev.D.D McLeod said we should not he hastr. We might do a great deal mom harm than good He never yet heard that tbe Presbyterian Church was built up by student work.He would group a number of atat.ocs, then place a minister and a catechut under him in charge.Dr.MacVicar held that none of tbe three schemes proposed would do anything better than play with tbe difficulty.H- b-ld that tbe schemes propose ! would not increase the number of men, but simpR transfer men from one place to another. We needed stronger ani better trained men and not weaker ones. The Rev.George Bruce said that the interests of ministerial education and the interes is of religion would never suffer by the church doing the best she can in meeting tbe wants of man.He hoped that at least some of the suggestions contained in these schemes would meet the wan a of the coming winter. The Rev.Hrgh McKeller called attention to the fact that we have a large number of probationers and unemployed ministers who might be sent there to do the work.Mr.John Patterson, Toronto, said he had jnst been informed that the Presbytery of Owen Sound had advertised again and again fors-.'-h men a« Mr.McKeller, referred to, to fill vacant stations in it, an t had not received a single reply.Dr.McTavish, of Toronto, said that Prof.Hcrunger’s amendment suggested to his mind the idea of a man declaring h.s readiness to give up his wife for tbe good of his countiy.(Great laughter.) He strongly a ivocated the adoption of the minority report.AB IITIRISTISG SCBJSCT.At this point three or four brethren started for the plattorm and so intent were they in getting tb*re that they were unconscious of each others movements. It was very amusing. The Assembly was intensely excited from the beginning of tbe debate. It was, undoubtedly, the biggest thing that the As* sembly has had unon its hands siace it commenced its sittings. The synopsis of the speeches given affords but a faint conception of all that passed or of all the men that spoke.Several hours have bei-n '•pent upon this question already, and it is impossible to predict what may happen or when the thing may end.Dr.Grant assured the Court that tbe minority scheme would not secure tbe thirty-six men they talked about.Circulars had been sent down to all th*- students already, asking them to pledge themselves to stay out in the North West during the winter. And how many had offered ?Twelve.Send the qu»a-tion'to the Presbyteries.Dr.Robertson said tbev had appealed to tke Colleges in Ontario and Quebec, to go into the mission field—only one bad consented.AH we ne*-d is not more men but a better distribution of those we have.On a vote being taken upon the report only one or two features of it were adopted, sach as ujging Presbyte nee to look out for suitable men as catechists, but tbe remainder were sent down for future consideration.THE CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY CO.fUtvni of traffi sar&iiig* trom Jans 7 to Jun* M, 1W1 The Rev.D.M.Gordon reported from tbe committee appointed to eontiaer the question of summer sessions to our colleges.Dr.Bryce pr wnted a minority report coo-leading that the majority r.-port does not meet 1»!.ttrt.ooo IttO .xsi.oor; lorrsMi for 1S91.113,000 lara.efs of Msw Brunswick fUUway Included In both CONGREGATIONAL UNION trschliiir < I Jesus ChrUt, UsItevloK that with lbs • Kiowtb of true r«lls>oa there w!U be uleo the sure pro-irrtte ot tbe people.” CLOSE OF THE MEETINGS AT GUELPH.(From Our Special Corr*ip«nJ*nt.) UfflLPH, Ont., June 16.—The first item at Friday s meeting of the Congregational Union, in session here, was a report of the Prison Re.form Committee of the Union, telling of the work done by the commission of investigation appointed by the Government. The report of Rev.John Burton, delegate to the Union of England and Wales, was then read, showing the hearty siKpatby of the English brethren with Canadian work.Resolutions were also adopted referring to the loss of tlio Union in i he baths of the Rev.D.Fraser and the Rev.J.F.Steven-on, D D., and expressing the sympathy of ti e Union with the bereaved famines. The a ternoon sef ston was one of much interest, the Rev.W.II.Warriner reading the report of the Congregational College. In it details of the enlarged and improved courie of study were given, also the standing of the various students in theological studies and their Arts course.A relerence to the la ge number of studeuis going to the foreign ti Id brought on a discussion as to the propriety of the college educating men for oilier than the home field. It was shown that theext a expense to the college for tuition was nothing at all, and that nearly every student who had gone to foreign work hat paid his own way through college without aid.It whs felt hy all that there would be no restraint placed upon the consciences of the men and a resolution was unanimously p>«s*ed declaring that the corporation dt-tdired the idiathat the privileges of the College were not as fne to tlios
