mineral discoveries, tin and coal, in Australia.Rich lodes of tin have been found in Victoria and immense beds of iron ore.The Assistant Government Geologist in Victoria reports that besides black coal areas covering 300 square miles and containing some 30,000,000 tons, there are strata of brown coal with seams averaging 30 feet in thickness, amounting to many biuions of tons.Government reports from New South Wales estimated that there was enough coal within easily worked areas, to peiinit an annual output of 10,000.000 tons for many years to come.On Dean street, in Whitechapel District, men have been employed the last few days excavating for a new building on a long disused site, once occupied as a notorious criminal resort. It was in this place that one of "Jack the Ripper’s" victims was found with her body mutilated in the usual Sickening manner which marked the work of that assassin. The workmen were at their labors to-day, when turning over a quantity of debris a rough box was revealed, which was found to contain the dry bones of three adults and everything pointed to murder, probably many years ago dreds of persons visited the place to view the skeletons, bat no facts in connection with the cases were brought to light. The police are making a searching enquiry into the matter. The charges against Count Trent, one of Dutch nobility, of swindling a widow under pretence of securing her a position on the stage, was resumed to-day in the Sonthvyark Police Court.Since the last hearing of the case the police have discovered numerous other victims of the recreant Count, including one widow, a member of a noble family. Most of Trent’s victims are ashamed to come forward and testify against him, dreading publicity.Sufficient evidence has been obtained, however, to convict the prisoner of having, while a married man, seduced and swindled numerous women under promise of marriage. For one such crime he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. After to-day’s testimony had tieen concluded the magistrate ordered Trent to be remanded for a week for further hearing.Mme.Albani, Mr.Edward Lloyd, and several other singers at the Leeds musical festival, have been making daily visits to the hospital and poor-house near that city losing for the benefit and amusement of the unfortunate inmates of those institutions.Last evening Albani sang "Home, Sweet Home” to the patients at the hospital, moving them to tears by the pathetio rendering of the familiar air.A new application was made to-day In Bow Street Police C-ourt in the case of Mitchell, the prise fighter, who was sentenced to two months’ Imprisonment at hard labor for brutally assailing George Salvage.Mr.Graham, for the prisoner, asked the Magistrate to review his sentence and to release Mitchell on satisfactory bonds for his future good behaviour. It is stated that Mitchell’s friends have abandoned the idea of appealing from the sentence.Berlin, Oct.8-—The Emperor has insisted that his Ministers shall put an end to disagreements.Count Von Eulenbnrg has lost no time in yielding, and for the present peace is reestablished. The organs of Chancellor Yon Caprivi are now insisting that the conflict is a pure invention of the opposition journals, bnt they are babes crying in the wilderness, lor every one in official circles knows the details of this crisis, and every one says that time is the only thing that has been gained by the reoonoiliatian effected.Hong Kong, Oct.8.—The C.P.R.S.S."Empress of Japan” left here this now confined in an asylum at Bonn. The hotel-keeper who was wounded by the Prince has been compensated by the family of the unfortunate lunatic. While at Lodz, in the suite of the Czar, Prince Radziwill became suddely insane and arming himself began shooting at everyone in sight.Owing to nis lieing a close friend of the Czar the police hesitated w use the ordinary methods of violence in overpowering him, and the device of ordering out the fire department and playing a hose upon him was resorted to.This proving ineffectual the military were called out, but no one ventured to return the Prince’sshots, which he kept up until his ammunition ran out, when he was pounced upon by a crowd of men and overthrown, Jn the course of his fusilode the Prince wounded the landlord and two waiters attached to the hotel.Curacoa, W.L, Oct.8—News has been received here of the complete overthrow of the de facto Government of Venezuela, in the persons of Villegas Pulida and bis Ministry. This was anticipated. The Governineut troops, which had taken up their position near Teques to protect the Capital from the insurgent army, were engaged in battle by the forces of Gen.Crespo, some fourteen thousand to fifteen thousand strong, and were utterly routed. The place where the battle occurred was at San Pedro, au out of the way village. It was a hot and bloody battle, but of short duration. The discontented soldiers of the Government were no match fof the trained veterans of the gallant warrior Crespo. The wholesale desertion tp the ranks of the revolutionists added to the discomfiture of Villegas Pulida and hit followers.Dégénérais made desperate efforts to rally their mep but it was a hopeless task.Dismayed by the terrible onslaught of the enemy they wavered and fled, after the battle had been raging only a short time. The Crespists followed up their advantage, using guns and machetes to wreak vengeance on the demoralized fugitives. Many were killed in the combat, 'the slaughter which characterized the pursuit of the unlucky soldiers of the Administration was terrible. In this way the killed and wounded among the Government troops were more numerous than those wiio fell in the battle itself.Besides the capture of an immense amount of ammunition and arms, the Crespists made hundreds of prisoners.Among the latter were many prominent leaders. The most important capture was that of the Government Commander in-Chief.Without waiting to rest his tired but enthusiastic men, Cresiio is reported to have Ïiven the order to advance at once on the 'apital. It is quite probable that he U no^r in (’(tracas. There is nothing now to plop his entry into that pity.Çrespo has po one left to oppose him.The latest çh façto president, ViHegas Pulida, has imitated Palacio Dr.Wise’s Synagogue two hundred school children sang patriotic hymns. There is hardly a house in New York to-day that is not decorated in some way. There are miles and miles of flags and hunting, Japanese lanterns and other decorations, ranging from the little soiled flags on Italian fruit vendors’ stands to the silk flags on Fifth Avenue. All of the residences of the Fifth Avenue are hidden behind flags, lanterns and shields. There is not space enough in any paper to describe the different holiday displays here, hut it is estimated that if the flags and hunting were hung on one line, the other end of the line would be at Buffalo. The police are getting ready to move upon ths army of local and out of town crooks, who are awaiting with great expectations the opening of tho big celebration.Every suspicious character in the city will be caught and held at the expense of the city until after the festivities are over. The Statue of Liberty was illuminated last night for the
