ladies and gentlemen present was large and influential. The members of the House of Assembly and Legislative Councillors mustered in great force. The speech from the Throne was read by Mr.Justice Bosse, owing to the continued indisposition of the Lieutenant-Governor.Everybody present regretted the absence of our able and esteemed Chief Magistrate. The form of procedure observed at the opening, was much the same, cf course, as if His Honor, the Head of the State, was in his place on the dais, but the knowledge that Mr.Angers was not at his post through serious illness threw a damper on the proceedings which was felt as keenly by Judge Bosse himself, as by the Chief Ministers of State, and the audience present On all sides the hope was expressed, that the Lieutenant-Governor would soon be able to resume his duties, and appear on our streets again, recuperated in health and physically strong. The speech was principally remarkable for what it did not contain. The pro gramme offered by the Crown to the assembled wisdom of the country, is very meagny No measure of paramount importance is promised, and from what we hear among the members of Parliament, there will be very few private bills presented at this ses sion of the Legislature. The session, therefore, will not be a long one. There will be some displays of oratory of course, on both sides of the House, and we are told that a few votes of want of confidence in the Government, will be submitted by the Opposition. But these will be introduced solely for use in the eftnsti tuencies at the next general election, and the aim will be to discredit the National wing of the ‘Government supporters, in counties where, a few years ago, Conservative members wore returned to Parliament. The Government has strengthened itself very much since it assumed office, but this fact is more due to the utter helplessness, and weakness of the Opposition party managers in Quebec, rather" than to anything that it has itself done on its own account. This is unfortunate, of course, but brains are not given to every politician, and bumptiousness and vanity cannot be considered as statesmanship. So, we suppose, the Government will not encounter much difficulty in carrying full sail from opening day to the close of the session.Elsewhere, our readers will find a full account of whit took place yesterday. We have made the usual arrangements for reliable and ample reports of the proceedings of the Legislature, during the session, and these, we trust, will meet the wishes of our citizens.THE MORNING THE HOUSE OPENED.CHRONICLE, Chaplcau is well, and has established herself aa a great feverite ia the English-speaking colony.A Parisian paper speaks of her as “a gracious personification of the Aoglo-French alliance.” P.M.By order, m__ T1I0S.POTViy, Secretary.Tannery 10, 1?89.____________Ap IDO ST, ON TUESDAY EVENING LAST, ON the St.Louis Road, between Marcbmoitt and the Toll-Gate, A BLACK BEARSKIN ROBE.Finder will be rewarded by leaving it at TAB OFFICER’S MESS, Citadel.Jaanary 10, 1839, A Wit in the Pnlpit.Although an extreme gravity of demeanour is generally considered es-entkl to the proper conduct of religious services, numberless examples are on record in which the ocoupint of a pulpit hsa thought it cot inconsistent with his position to iudulga in outbursts of wit, or to give free reia to his sense of humour. In some instances, of course, this has been done deliberately, for the purpose of more thoroughly engaging the attention of the congregation ; bat the effects have been occa aionally romewhat startling.Sydney Smith was once preaching to a congregation in Edinburgh, made up almost exclusive of ladies. He chose for his text the words, “O that mon wonld therefore praise the Lord,” laying spe oial stress on the word nun, and looking significantly around the church. The R«v.Dr.Howard, rector of St.George’s, Southwark, and chaplain to Princess Augusta, was so fond of good living that he ran ocndderably into debt with many of tbe tradesman in his piriah. It was in their «peci-il interests that he one day preached from the text, "Have patience and I will pay you all.” He spoke at great length on the virtu's of patience, and then proceeded, now come to the second part of my discourse, which is ‘And I will pay you all ;’ but that I shall defer to a future occasion.” It is not often, perhaps, that a preacher is placed in the position of the Rev.Patrick Stewart, who, on spreading out the manuscript of his sertnen before him on the pulpit, found that the first page or two had been taten away.“My brethren,” ha said, noth-iug diiooncerted, “I find that the mice have made free with the beginning of my sermon so that 1 cannot tell yon where the text is hut we’il just begin where the mice have left off, and we’il fiud oat the text &s we go along.” Decidedly caustic was the remirk made by a clergyman who was stopped one Sunday by the loud talking that was going on among his congregation.A woman rose from the- side of the church where those of her s-x sat apart from the men, and called out, “Your raver-once, the talking is not among us.” “So much the batter,” answered the preacher ; “it will be the sooner over !” Dean Ramsay tells of a northern minister who saw that a young man in the gallery, in Uking out bis pocket handkerchief, palled oat, at the same time, a pack of cards, which flew all about.“Kh, moo,’ exclaimed the minister, “your psalm-balk has boon ill-bund !" A BRILLIANT CEREMONY.THE SPEECH FROM THE THRONE.The usual ceremonial attended the opening of the third session of the Legislature of the Province of Quebec respecting lunatic asylums, in accordance with some of the recommendations contained ia the report of the commission appointed to study that Imp riant qaes ion, aud with a view of removing the feeling of uneasiness caused by that act.Several otherbills will also bo submitted to Last night afforded proof of tho interest that is taken in the Rink this season, and the sosne witnessed there surpassed what it has h^en^for a long time. The Rink was well decorated with flags. The Cavalry Band in full uniform played a splendid programme and everyone was in the best of spirits. As the gong sounded, a long line of ladies tiled out from the dressing room and np along one aide and met tho gentlemen at the upper end of the Rink, skating down the centre together, j which afforded a very pretty sight for the spectators who were quite numerons. The variety and brightness of the cottumes was a marked feature, as was the absence of the ordinary snow-shoers and sailors.Bluebeard and Mother Bunch showed the spectators what waltzing on; ice was, the Duchess of Devonshire look well, Night glided prettily about, Sweet Lollypops made many an eye turn upon her, Lady Bird was well gotten up, whilst the German Feasant really looked lovely. The Chessking wm one of the best gotten np dresses.Tre Admiral appeared m usual but was worn by a commanding figure, Fishwife displayed a pretty face.A Spanish Lady, though she made her first appearance, commanded attention.A Young Pastry Cook again appeared with his cakes, aod the Turkish Lady bad a very pretty face whioh ffo?s a long way, making a dress look well.Bopeap and Grace Darling was well gotten np ar.d did credit to the characters. The Venetian courtier was one of the most exact and most handsome dresses at the Rink and ft was easily seen that no trouble or expeese had been spared. There were two Indians whose costumes were well worthy of note and it would be well for all to remember these two dresses, in order to see on the 16:k instant, when there will be an Indian war dance at the Rink by the real Huron Indians, whether they are better than the real costume.Kate Hardcastle was also a well-gotten np dress.Tr.e Poudreo who led the ladies, showed she was no novice on skates, and oan always he detected no matter what her cortume may be.Tbe Albanian looked well.Antrefois looked charming as she glided throngh tho throng of skaters, with her nsnal grace. The red and black devils displayed a good deal of ingenuity in their get np, and icstead of.being noisy and troublesome as osual, were : quiet and no doubt did more damage among the fair sex than those of former years. The Pack of Cards was one of the good dresses and very true to Its character.“Let Her Go Murphy” wm in good type and carried off the character to perfeotinn.Honsemaids were there and a simple dress helped greatly to make the coup A ceil pretty.Martha Washing-people of |_too was deserving of a word of praise, while the Standard Bearer wm good. The Lady of the Time of Queen Elizabeth, was very characteristic, and the Pompadour Shepherdess looked very pretty and shot about the ice m thongh she were quite at Lome on skates. If tha city police were all of such build aa the ono on ice lot night, ori-minais would fair badly ia Qaebeo. The Japanese Lady was one of the good dresses and she certainly added greatly to the appearance of the Rink.Abagil Penegritn wore an excellent costume.Incroyable was oar-talnly what her name said ; ahe again wore one of ths costumes that greatly assiated in making last night’s carnival a success.Fol-low-the-Drum was an original idea, and the lady wearing the character has always dons her duty by the Rink in patting herself to no end of trouble in getting np good ccstames.Miss Dora Brown as “Our Navy” wore a very beantiful and striking costume, in which the Union Jack figured with fine effect.Miss Emily Brown appeared m the ^Duchess of Devonshire and gave the impresrion that ahe had stepped oat of Gainsborough’s frame.Miss F.Brown, Sweet Girl Graduate looked exceedingly well.Mira Wade made a very pretty Fiower Girl and Stanley Wade and James Bowen appeared m Clowns.A Marguerite was excellent aod wm much admired.Old Mother Hnbbard looked aa though ahe had not lost her dog and appeared cheerlul and happy.Noblemen of the 16th and 19-h contones were there in fall fig.Tennis players evidently thought the weather had cillcd for them to come ont of winter quarters.A Comet shot about the ioe in lively style. The drea« of a Poairee being a good ono «as worn by several, but all got it up eo well that it could be worn by qnite a number and still not be monotonous. In conclusion, we must say thit cur young friends of the Skating Association bave every reason to feel satisfied with the result of Uat evening.Had the weather been a little more favorable, no donbt the rink wonld have been packed to tbe doors. We trust to s^e the fancy ball of the During the year 1888, seventeen new members were elected, and fourteen withdrew from the society.Of the latter three resigned, swen left the oity, and four died. The council regrets exceedingly the s*d loss which the society sustains in the deaths of Jean B.Dion, Roderick McLeod, for many yrars a talented and zeal-ms office-bearer, the Hon Senator Jam.*s G.Ross, and tho Count de Premie Real, late Consnl-General for Spain st this port.We have an active membrrahip of 190.His Excellency, the Rt.Hon.the Lord Stanley, Governor-General of Canada, was elected patron and honorary member of the society. The following letter of acceptance was received.a^a.1164 to 1775, ami oue volume Registres des Insinuations des Cahiepa d’intendance Complet » ret* f f the book* of George Kim*, Matthew Arnol 1.Em rson, J.Resell L> * 1, Oliver Weidell II Ime* and Nathan il Ha*-th roe,.are icclude-i in the purchases ft the yea-, but the works of Sir Walter Scott, .Dickens, Thackeray and Bulwer Lytton *re !
