Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Able To Get Out Of The Building—Dead Number At Least Soore, Wounded Reach High Dublin, June 39—The Insurgent Republican forces under Rory O'Connor have held the Four Courts tor two days against all the attacks of the Provisional Government.‘Fhroughout today a slow bom- hardment continued, and gradually sections of the splendid edifice ware seen to erumble away.Because of the slow and deliberate methods employed by the Govermment authorities, the operations have been prolonged for & much greater period than was generally expected, thus permitting an opportunity for those supporting the revolutionary movement to take up positions at various points throughout the city with the object of giving aid to the men within the Insurgent mronghold.Nobody was able to get out of the Four Courts.but O'Connor's Dublin Brigade comprising upwards of 4.- 000 men.has shown activity that indicates it ie working on & prearranged plan.Last night and today bands of Irregulars occupied various premises, which they could hold and from which they could 4 maximum damage hy sniping. While the majority of the people in Dublin commend the action of the Provisional Government, the Republicans are circulating confl- dent statements, and though O'Connor is not supposed to de in any way responsible to the De Valerz party, it is evident from the statement issued by Mr.De Valera today that he has that party's sympathy. No accurate estimate of the ca- susitien can be made akthough the dead are known to number at least a score, the wounded reashing a high figure. The casualties are by no means confined to the investing and besieged forces as snining has played a considerable part. One Free State soldier was shot dead while standing at à window in the four Courta hotel. One man seems to be in close touch with the Free State leaders, tele graphed his paper at midnight that “urexpected difficuliles have been encountered by the Government forces in their siege of the Four Cours.” “it Is impossible.” he added, “to forecast what the immediate developments will be, but the English public would be unwise to assume that Michael Collins’ determination to take the bull by the horns has been definitely successful.A renewal of faith and pa- tence may be.necesary before the fruits of victory can be reaped.” A Central Neww dispatch from Dublin today reports members of the I.W.W.In possession of some buildings in the city, including Moran's Hotel. They are armed with revolvers and rifles.the message declares, and have an electric mine laid in the centre of the roadway outside the hotel in Talbot strest.A cable is visible running from the hotel, the correspondent says, the intention evidently being to ambush any Free State force that nttempis to renew yesterday's at.Country District's May Escape ‘Winston Churchill, Kecretary for the Colonies told the House of Commons this afternoon the situation In Dublin was not wholly free from anxiety. He mld the Pritish were confining thelr assistance entirely to supplying the Free State with the materials it required. The Frees State author- Ities continued to decline assistance of any kind from British troops he added. The Postmaster General announces that the cable between Anglesey, Wales and Kingstown has been cut and that telegraphic communication between Great Britain and Southern Ireland has therefore ceased. The cable to Belfast, however, Ia working and is the only me of communication with Ireland.I: is also improbable that letters can be Gelivered anywhere in Southern Îreland."The Dublin correspondent of the Times mys that, although it would be premature to atate that the real fight between the Provisional Government and the irrsgulars will be confined to Dublin, there a oouraging Indications that the country districts may escape with com- paratively light disturbances.Figure 244 MEMBERS IN NEXT COMMONS Redistribution Bill To Increase yet, after ali, in what does nation.: hood consiet? The teeritory known as the Dominion of Canada is cme of the most extensive oa the face of the globe; the fertility of ita soll and the wealth of its naturel resources are unsurpañsed. The Cassdian people number close on nine millions wânse intelligence, initiative sad prodactivity will bear favorable comparison with any other civilized prople.Neither tesritory nor people, however, can make & nation; there must be preset tha two in combination, together with the apiri- tual quality of patriotism, which finds expression in common ideals. The foundation for a strong and united nation was well and truly laid by the Fathers of Confederation, our mighty forbears, whose very namespart pare haps from Cartier and Macdonald—are unknown to many a Canadian of to-day, More than half a century has elapsed since their tremendons task was completed and if those men who have come after them had been as wise to plan and as skilful in exeention the whole structure would by this time be well on its way to completion. That so little progress has been made constitutes a grave reproach to those who mow call thempalves Canadians. There is little profit in recalling past mistakes or in seaking to apportion reeponsibility for thelr com- niisston, The only useful thing that can be done is to form firmer and better resolutions for the future.Patriotism is necessarily a elow and natura] growth; to attempt to foron it artificially is in all likelihood to retard, if not to kill it: but at the same time it is possible to see that the soll is favorable and properly cul.dvated, just as 1t ia possible to neglect these precautions, leaving the survival of patriotiam to chance Pacing the facta, ve must admie that aince Confed- © eration the penple of Canada have pureued a policy : ot “drift” of “lalmes-faire,” with the inevitable result that the snl has become hard and unfertile As individuals group together and attach themselves more firmly to the soil in a new country, ideals will spring up and Icft 10 themselves, will grow wild. The cultivation must be the work of enlightened and magnanimous leaders. That is what has taken place to a large extent in this Dominion: we have the ideals of the two great peoples of Fastern Canada which differ from each other at certain points and we have the newer growth of Western ideals tn conflict at import ant points with the native stock in the Provinces of the East.Fortunately time yet remains to bring these tmto harmony if we set ouresives actively to the work, which’ will become more and more arduous as the years pass by.Fither ideals that ft is possible to hold in common mum be found or the existing individual ideals will tend to choke each other as they grow anttl, if the voica of world history can teach us anything, the risk is ran of exposing our children's children to a disaster that no one of the present generation would contemplates without dismay. With a nationhood that has any other basis than equality, a nationhood in which any ons element of the population dominates or exploits another, we have nothing to do.But with a nationhood that reTects mutual rights and mutnal customs, that accepts mutual obligations and enjoys mutual benefits we can build up the State that Canadas was intended by Divine Providenie to be.The experience of others is always helpful and tn on= nation-building, we can hardly do better than set the example of Switanriand clearly and steadily before us, a democracy created ander conditions end tu the face of difficulties comparahle to our own. There dwell three distinct racial groups in closest unity; whether French, German or Italian they retain a full measure of pride in their respective origins which is yet found to be entirely consistent with a common pride in being Swiss.Tt is singular that Canadians shonld give public weight and value to the points that separate them, but that little or nothing is done to give similar prominence to the points that should unite.Let us then resolve to quicken our dormant national consciousness by the most convenient means, of which the gemeeal observance of the anniversary of Confederation Ia evidently ona.Hera tn Quchec a public celebration has been organized for to-morrow on a modest scale, bnt with the highest intentions «of patriotism.Withont public support that celebration in bound to fail and it te to de earnestly hoped that every cittaen will cooperate.first of all dy the display of flags and the decoration of buildings, and secondly by taking a full and sympathetic part in the various features of the programme that has heen arranged.By so doing they will help to kindle « fire of patriotism that must ! some day sweep over the Dominion and, with the | Fathers of Confederation, will have deserved well of posterity tn Canadaa eee as ee mye A FORWARD STEP.The decision of the Hamme of Commons to broaden the scope of the Royal Commission which is to investigate the charges of the G.W.V, A, againm the Board of Pension Commisionems, ir regarded generally by Canadian ex-soldiers aa the greatest advance in re-establishment measures since the conclusion of the war.The broadening out proposal advanced hy members of all parties in the Howse and scoepted by the Government.was to the effect that the Commission be empowered to examine all matters of com.plant, within resson, which ex-service men might have against existing legislation and methods of administration, i In all probability the Commision, upon appointment, will concentrate its efforts in the first instance on the Maxwell-MacNell charger, which will undoubtedly require a considerable number of semvions before the evidence is complete and a decision arrived at.The veterans at present are particularly interess- of in the personnal of the proposed Commission The Winnipeg Branch, G.W.V.A., requested the Governto make at least ons appointment of & man who 1 1 ! présent moment is aaid to be concentreting upon collation of the evidence i= auppart of the With nearly 100.000 caste of pension and other on record, very lula difficulity wil be found, tt ts activities wili commence, but it fe the gemeral opinion that this should be dome with as little delay a3 pos sible, —— RARITIEX NATIONAL ECONOMY.British nations] economy has taken practical form ia a reduction af over 256.066,600 in the Government's expeaditare during the first two moutha of the present fiscal year compared with the amount spent in the earresponding period of the preceding flacal year. The Rritish Treasury's figures received by the Bankers’ Trust Company, of New York, from its English Information Service, give the comparative expenditure as follows: April 1 to May 38, 1931.£150,290.081 April 1 to May 37, 1993.108,113.481 The British figs] year extends from Apeil 1 © March 31 and in the pressat year the Government's alm ie te keep expenditure close to £800,000,000.Not since the first year of the war has the British budget of expenditure been kept below £1,600,000,000.The reduction is to be effected principsily in the item of Supply Services which includes civil government expense and the military expenditure. The amount issued from the Exchequer for Supply Services io the firet two months of the present fiscul year was £49,410,300.In the same period of the preceding fiscal year the amount was £99.581,900.Some Things the Public Would Like to Know: ’ Pertinent Questions on Uatlers of General Public Interest are Invited. Is every Canadian chilé being brought up to realize that he or ahe is à Canadian and to feel proud of being one?Why should not Quebec enjoy community singing as well ag Montreal, Ottawa, and other insignificant hamlets?A Verse Or Two (By Modern Pocts) , A CANADIAN RPECESSIONAL, (After Kipling.) Municipal Health Bureau, and recently published, that she amount of Ice-cream produced and consumed in the city end its environs in 1931 amounted to a total of 336,000 gal- fons, and that the consumptfen would ahow & large increase this year, said the figures given out were from the record made from the Inspection of milk and ice-cream in the city by the Municipal Health Inspectors, te see that every gulicn of milk which came into the city, «né every galion of ice-cream made hers is absolutely in accordance with eivio regulations, for the protection of the public health. On belng informed that many who had read the published statement questioned the figures given out by the Health Department, said: — “The amount of consumption of lce-cream in the oity and distriot ig even much larger than the figures published, and for the year 1923.will reach close upon a half million gallons.” He pointed out that there were 8,000 miloh cows producing milk to supply the city and that 18,000 ssl) tons wae the average dally produc- ton, which brought the yearly supply up to 6,475,000.Out of this quantity 11,000 gallons consumed daily for domestic purposes and the tesding of infents and young children, or a total per year of 4,015,008 allons.Leaving 4,000 gallons daily or 1,460,000 per year for the manufacture of ice-cream.K takes three gallons of milk to obtaln sufficient cream to make one gallon of ice-cream.Thus it will be seen, said Dr.Paquin, that 1,460- 000 gallons of milk left over from the domestic supply, will make 386,- 000 gallons of ice-cream.In order to make ice cream each gallon of milk should supply at least 8 per cent of fat, and as eight per cent of fat is required to make «a gallon of ice cream so that it takes threes gallons of milk for one gallon of ice cream, ss just stated.Dr.Paquin further explained that in the making of fce-cream, the value of the product to the vendor is increased 30 per cent.by the air expansion. He said thet the ice- cream made in Quebec was not only distributed and consumed in the city but throughout the whole district.which accounted for the large consumption. He added that up to & year ago & large part of the cream consumed in Quebec was manufactured In and came from Montreal, principally the Purity-Ieo Cream, dut now the Quebec dairies were manufacturing It themselves, and was driving all other products out of the market, ag it was a better cream and absolutely in accordancs with the Civic health regulations, the dairies being inspected dally te- gether with their product.MA.W.RAYMOND
