Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

London, Nov.4—Developments in the negotiations toward an Irish settlement now are understood to hinge on the conferences which Bir James Cralg, the Ulster Premier, will have in the next few days with Mr.Lloyd George, and Sir Edward Carson.A mecial meeting was held by the Ulster Cabinet in Belfast to-day préor to the departure of Bir James Sraig for London. He will spend the week-end with his son at Eton, meeting the Prime Minister, #t is expected on Monday. At Bian Feln headquarters to-day it was stated that British representatives and the 8inn Feiners had reached a measure of accord that promised a solution of all issues and that Ulster now was as great stumbling block in the path of the negotiations from the Government's point of view as from that of the Sinn Fein.Desmond Fitsgerald, of the Sinn Fein party in a statement this atter- noon, definitely denied & number of reports published in London newspapers relative to pointe on which an agreement is sald to have been reached by the conferrees. He characterissé ag untrue rumora that the Sinn Feiners had accepted the principle of Dominion status and British control of Irish ports and had agreed to contribute from the Irish Treasury to the Imperial Treasury. He refused to disclose any points which have been agreed upon thus far, but it is stated in other Irish quarters that the disposition of the Sinn Feiners not to acespt the principle of allegiance to the British Crown remains unshaken. It is intimated in these quarters, however, that & formula has been agreed upon, bridging that difficulty, whereby Ireland would not be designated as a British Dominion but as “an assoclste nation.” It is further stated that a solution of the Ulster problem must come if it comes at all, through Ulster’s recognition of the principle of unity in Ireland, Report Krroneous. It developed to-day that the report made public from Belfast to the effect that all the Sinn Fein prisoners in the Ballykinlar internment camp near that city, numbering about 1,700, had been released, was erroneous. The origin of the report, it seems, was based on the release of a number of prisoners from this camp, owing to con, tion thers, but no general freeing of the interned men occurred.Cannot Attend Meeting.Dublin, Nov.4.—Representatives of County Councils are forbidden by the Dall Eireann to attend the meeting of the Council of Agriculture Thich has been .convened for Nov.The ground is - A lot of ladiesl Girls’ and Ladies’ Dresses, in pre or gapardine, Jusorted straps on the shoulders; to make any etatement beyond saying that the Meuset case is not yet closed, writes Hugh Fullerton. There is no doubt in the world that the New York Giants, through the purchase of Rawlings and Meusel, Hamstadt to investigate the treasure, which is suposed to represent In value an amount of 30,000,000 marks (about £50,000), and there seems to be some grounds that it actually may be the ancient treasure. This dates back to the 14th century. The story is that it was amassed by Stoertebecker and Goedecka Michal, the two leaders of a gang of pirates which flourished in tha 14th century and preyed on the wealth of the wealth of the rich merchantmen of the Baltic and the tierman Ocean. The fame of the pirates and their secret cache survives tu this day in old German folk songs. The Hansa merchants, espe.clally, had a bad time until in 1403 they gathered together a strong fleet, led by the good ship Checkered Cow of Flanders, and In a decisive sea fight overcame thelr chief, Stoertebecker. The legend goes on to relate that they stood In a long row, and Btoer tebecker looked once more upon all his friends, and.‘because he loved them dearly,” he begged the judge to spare the lives of those whom he could pase in rlunning after he had been beheaded. The judge assented and when Btosrtebeckers head had fallen, the headless body actually (so the legend relates) ran past 15 of the condemned prisoners The executioner, howeevr, was afraid; that all the prisoners would be saved, ynd threw a block of wood at the headless body and brought the budy down. The treasure which the pirates had hidden was the subject | of much research, but it has never been found. There ia still some' skepticlam whether the find at Hamburg may not have sume other origin.BURIED IN SAND of the river. He immediately reported the discovery to the nearest resident who happened to be W.J.Keen, the local game warden, and after a further inspection of the grye- some find, the matter was laid/in the hands of the local justice of the peace.Up to the present time apparently no official action has been taken leading to identification, but this should prove comparatively easy, as we understand portions of clothing are still in a good state of preservation, Much speculation is rite es to whether this find will prove to be the clue leading to the solving of A seven-year-old tragedy, when Emile Lamoureaux lost his life fording the river at a pain about a mile north of this spot.Constant searching has.never been successful In finding the body of this man.although a rifle he had with him at the time was found about 400 yards from the place where he attempted to cross. As soon as the skeleton, which is very deeply buried in a heavy sand, can be excavated, perhaps the Mixture TAKING OFF TIRES 13 ONE MAN JOB Knack Of Knowing, Well Worth The Attention Of Drivers The apparent ease and dispatch with which a thoroughly experienced driver can dismount and apply without assistance big pneuma- tle tires ie evidence that there is « knack to it that is worth the attention of those who own or operate trucks. In the folowing paragraph.a well-known tire company points out briefly how handling thess tires can be made a one-man job.To dismount the tire and rim from the wheel, jack up the wheel until tire freely clears the ground, loosen the tire bolts, and then the rim by shock, and turn the wheel so that the sector containing the valve 1s near the ground. With doth hands grasp the tire and rim at points just below the level of the hub and quickly life and pull the rim away from the top of the wheel. At the same time watch the value to mak re that it does not bind in the fellos, when the rim slides off the felloe band.If properly performed this method of dismounting the tire and rim frim whee! requires very little lifting and causes no damages to the valve on the tube at the valve base.To dstach the tires from the rim, lay the car on level ground, locking ring side up, remove the valve plunger to complete deflation, and .push back the valve stem inside the rim.Remove locking and side rings, loosen flay all round and, standing insiGe of the rim, life the tire straight up off the rim. When the tire is ready for replacement on the rim.reverse the operations of detaching the tire from the rim with tube flap in place and valve stem pushing back flush with base of flap, drop the tire carefull yover the rim, taking that the bass of valve stem is directly opposite the rim valve hole.Step down the tire on the rim all around by treading on the dead, apply side and locking rings, draw out valve stem to proper position and inflate. Finally, in applying rim and tire to the wheel, engage the valve stem in the felloe at point level with the hud.push the rim firmly against the tellos and slowly turn the tire, rim and wheel until the valve is at the highest possible point. The rim will drop into place on the falloe except at the bottom where it can be pushed on by the foot. This knack of first engaging the valve, then turning the tire and rim on the wheal eliminates all direct lifting.and makes the applying of an eight-inch tire, the largest perfected truck pneumatic, a one-man job.THE VALUES OF GAR IN CANAD Is Set At Large Sum Of Six Hundred Million Dollars— 400,000 Machines When the war broke out the number of automobiles in use in Canada was 67,418, but to-day, says the monthly commercial letter of Bank of Commerce, the number 8 400,000, and the value of those registered is 3600,000,000.Although the price of cars and of gasoline has Increased during the current year.their use for pleasure as well as business purposes, has steadily increased. For manufacture of automobiles and the assembling of parts, $84,000,000 is invested in Canadian plants, which employ 16,000 hands receiving annual wages of $15,000,- 000, Sales of cars exceed $100,000- 060 annually.A large proportion of the mater- jal used in the production of a Canadian car ts imported. For parts alone the annual dill is $12,000,000, while the requirements of automobile manufacture entail an increased importation of glass, rubber, iron and steel. The growing uss of automobile vehicles accounts In great measure also in ‘garages, public and private.Yor the 12 months ending June 30 last, 514,207,000 gallons of oils were imported, as compared with 433,018,000 gallons for the preceding 13 months. The cost of this year's imports of oils in its finished and crude forms is estimate 4 at $38.000,000.This however, does not represent the whole cost of maintaining cars.During the current year a large amount of capital has deen invested to give employment to & large number. The former are now as numerous 4&8 once were village blacksmiths shops, which they , in many cases, absorbed, and @ to à very large extent the users of pleasure cars. They also give employment to a large number of highly paid workmen and to some extent facilitate production and also trade, the physical volume of the former has not materially changed.Continued expenditure of labor and capital on #0 large & scale without tangible results in exportable products stirring romance of sunken treasure is relatad by C.P.Lambert the famous English diver. When the steamsip Oceana salled from London for Bombay she had on board nearly $4,000,000 In gold destined for the Indian mint While going down the English Channel the treasure ship collided with & German sailing vessel and sank of Eastbourne.Amongst the salvage party sent to the scene was Mr.Lambert and his staff of expert divers.Owing to the stare of the weather it was found impossible to send down divers until a period of three weeks had elapsed. Finally Mr.Lambert was able to slip overboard and reconnoitre./s he relates the story: ‘My first task wan to secures the keys of the bullioii-room.which were in the captaln‘s cabin. There was a heavy swell, which was certainly a very great handicap and I found it æ most difficult job to make my way to the cabin.Three times I succeeded in reaching the door and threes times I was washed away again. Then at the fourth attempt I succesded and got inside the room.A search through the drawers revealed the keys. But I could not make my way there and then to the bullion as the longest 1 could work below at a time was about an hour, owing to the strong tideway. At the next attempt: I set out for the bullion room. After breaking down through the diff'erent decks, I at last found myself facing a mas- sive-looking door, which I knew to be the entrance to the stronghold where lay the gold-boxes.It was not a very difficult matter to hake my entrance to the bul- lon room which I soen had opened out ready for the tasic of removing the contents.I soon discovered I was fndeed among the gold, for wherever I look ed I saw tlers upon tires of boxes, | which 1 felt sure must contain th treasure for which I was searching. But 1 could not fe too sure, so I de cided to have one of the boxes taken to the surface Immediately so that ity contents could be examined.Having been under water for such! a long time, the boxes were awolien considerably, and they were all! tightly wedged together.I knew it would be a bit of & job getting even one away.Tackling first of all a key box— that is one which ts holding the others in place-~I struggled and struggled until it showed signed of: comings away.By this time the flood-tide having “made” the strain’ on my pipe and line terrific and I received several signals from my attendant to come to the surface. But I wanted to bring this box up 1 struggled with it until I had rot it out, and then, with Infinite caution, I proceeded to make my way back.At last I was hauled up on deck, Then I collapsed.Captain Yohng megaphoned across from the deck of the Ranger standing by, and asked: “What have you got?” We replied: “Box marked ‘XOX Bombay,’ ” then came back the message: “Good man, that's a box of gold.” As a matter of fact it contained $25,000.The weather took a bad turn again and it was a fortnight before we could start the work in earnest.Every day, aimout.we were down helow working away as hard as we could, but, of course, it was a long and tedious process. In three months’ time we had compited the job, having brought up the total of $3,975,000.I alone succeeded In recovering over two and a half million dollars’ worth, which as I declared before created a record, I may add that previous to the first box coming up the rate for re-insur- ANce was seventy-five per cent.Immediately after this box was recovered it dropped to twenty per cent, STERN REMINDERS OF RHEUMATISN The Trouble Must Be and the mention of the name recalls to all Liberals of the end of Laurier. It was in the famous by-election of 1910 that the Nationalist movement burst into full flame, It was then Henrl Bourassa, Armand Lavergne, the late Hon.F.D.Monk, Hon.P.Blondin, Hon.Albert Sevigny, and others, preached denunciation of Laurier through the length and breadth of Quebec, some as Nationalists, others as Nationalist-Con- servatives, but all anti-Laurier.In 1910 Laurier called Louis Lavergn to the Henate, thus necessitating by-election.Armand (Lavergne his nephew, but this dtd not preven him throwing himself into the fight, and the result was that Arthur Gilbert, Nationalist, was elected by 8 majority of 307, Mr.Gilbert lasted only a year, being defeated at the general elections of 1511 by J, € Brouillard. It is the same Mrbert who is now a leader in tarmers’ movement, and again linked up with Mr.Lavergne.Mr.Gilbert was one of the workers for the farmer candidate in the Yamaske time in 1878, and held the seat until his death, through ten general el~ctions and two by-elections Sir Wilfrid was at various times candidate in other divisions, but always gave them up after election for Quebec East, except in 1911 when being also selected for Soulanges owing to an internal party fight In Soulanges, he was not able to resign owing to « contestation.Rimouski, Rimouski and the speed of this second magnet therefore indicates the rate of the flow in the pipe. The advantage of this arrangement la that the indicating part of the mechanism is quite distinct from that through which the fluid is passing. All riek of the fluid finding its way into the indicating chamber Is awolded, and the instrument is therefore particularly well sulted for use where crude or hot oils is employed. The makers suggest that thiy instru.t is well adapted to nieasuring the rate of flow of oil in lubricating systems, and also the flow of oil fuel of cooling water in oil engines.TO CURE GREASY FORD AXLE.It is a not uncommon experience with owners of Fords that when the fubricant in the rear axie has become thinned by long uee it tends to work ita way out and be spattered ail over the wheels and brakes, An easy cure for this is to driil a small hole, 3-16 of an Inch is about right, in the bottom of the axle, housing on each side. The thinned grease which gets to the end seeps out through these holes.Care mumt be taken to place the holes high enough to allow enough grease for lubrication in the differential gears, and also thoy must not be placed too near the end of the differential housing.RCD NSA LR TX Cet a25 Box CANADA.) in such a way that hoth are shut off from public view. This gesture with the parasol is usually a signal for Applaise, cause it is supposed that the man and the girl are strongly attracted and that a marriage is likely to re- suit.At the close of the market there is a general jollifiration.and many of the girls walk off with their new friends to complete the plans for thelr marriage. It is usual, we are told.for a girl to receive at feast one offer of marriage in the course of a mingle fair, and the more attractive, as a rule, raceive several. When a gic] attends several fairs without being appropriated, 1t in almost certnin that rhe har un usually high standards, rather than that she ie singularly barren of attractions.Beauty Contesis. Those who think that this rough- and ready sort of courtship is not likely to lead to happy and perm- anhent marriaxe ties are refuted hy atatistica collected in the districts where It Is popular, which show that there are fewer divorces and fower lllegitimate children than elsewhere, it Is also noted that the hirth rates in theme (dintricta are greater than elnewhere, whirh Is a matter ar prime Importance to the Government of France. On thin arcount the Clovernment Is sald to he watching the experiments with Leen interest, It Is also promoting heauty contests with the haope of tnereasing the Marriage rate, although one would think that a girl pretty enough to win one uf these contests, or even make aA creditable showing tn one of them.would nat lack for Admirers In her own neighborhood.Still.as the philoan.pher remarked, the way of a man with & mald is past finding aut, and ruses that might not ncom likely to aticcesd, do, na & matter of fact, aucceed In & great number of cases. That Fifth avenue honu who is seventy years old and har a int of grandchildren, and in new engaged to be married to & bemititul woman half his age.In uald tn he the matrimonial “catch” of the reasnn, When a veteran of three.renre.and.ten decides to get married there must be a ontch somewhere, The President's sole ambition was to secur th ahleat men in the country for the departments which he assigned to them, Without regard tu their loyaity to himself. One of Me, Steward's secretaries would frequently report te me the acts of disloyalty or personal hostility on the part of Mr.Chase, with the lament: “The old man—meaning Lincolna thing." THE QUEBEC CHRONICLE.IN FRANGE AGAIN! Making Trouble For The King Of Siam To the average husband who knows the difficulty of maintaining one wife in comfort, the idea of keeping 10,000 would be staggering! For many ages, past.however this has been & common custom of the Kings of Blam, who had so many queens” that it was slmom impossible to keep count of them all.As a matter of fact they met some of them only once—at the marriage ceremony, It always has been the rule of the Siamese dynasty for the reigning monarch to spend mont of his spare time looking for fresh wives, and, no matter how many brides he might choose, thers is always accommodation for them in the specially bulit city at the back of the Palace at Bangkok. The brides are graded into dif- ferent catagories. The late King Chulalongkorn had 19,000 wives. There were three or four royal wives, several hundred wives of noble birth, and some thousands of others. The ceremony of marrying a royal wife takes two or three days, while two days are required for the wedding with one of the second class. One result of the Siamese royal custom has been an enormous number of children. The present king's grandfather had eighty-siz children His father had thres hundred and fifteen daughters and two hundred sons.Forced to Wed Many. The effect of Western education has shown itself upon the present king of Siam. He,with ten of his brothers was eduonted in Englandthe while the hundreds of his six ters and other brothers were being cared for at heme, When King Vajiravudh-—as he i» named-ascended the throne, he showed great disinclination to foi- low the custom of his forefathers. He wanted to marry only one wife. This proposal was greeted with con siderable public disfavor; al) the marriageable girls in Siam were amaged at the idea that they were to be deprived of the chance of becoming an inmate of the royal household, where a life of idle luxury was sasured. In the end, the King had to change his plans. There is a great deal that the King of Slam has to offer a wife.He has twenty palaces, a “Diamond City” a herd of white elephants, nearly ten million dollars worth of Diamonds.pearls, rubies and other precious stones, a state barge with & hundred and t(wenty oarsmen, thousands of other royal harges, a share in twenty-four golden umbrellas, and many other luxuries.Naturally enough, it would appear as {f confusion might raise in the royel household with eo many wives and children. But this is not the case.Everything is so well regulated that the King wma.dom, if ever, is troubled when any of his sons or daughters are naughty, or if one of his wives disagrees with a few thousand of the others.Hundreds of Babies. All the children — and the wives alen—are, of course, a great finan- olal burden on the King, sithough he is theoretically the possessor of all the wealth of the country. The girl children hitherto have not received any more than their clothes, but their demands are growing. The children of the wives who are not of noble birth are not entitled to anything, but they also are becoming more exacting. If & King of 81am should bs unfamiliar with the Inoks of any of his children it fe quite an excusable fault. When A baby is born to a wife a palace functionary announces the news to his Majesty.Although the mother may be nothing socially the fact that the King is father makes the baby sacred.Sometimes there 1s a certain awk wardness in the royal household when the King says: “Bring me the baby to play with.” But generally it is understood that he means any one of his two or three tables! hundred HOW TO REMOVE BASES OF LAMPS The bases of lamps which have been broken are not always easy to get out of the socket. Here ls a home made tool that will make the work simple. The basis ie & carriage Beer and Wine Now Served With The EXCELLENT MEALS at the Marathon Cafe 46 St.John Street TRY OUR TURKEY DINNER TOMORROW SERVED EVERY SUNDAY AND HOLIDAY FOR $1.00—IT'S A RARE TREAT.With every meal served we give free three tickets—one for each of Marcel Verney's Theatres EMPIRE, CLASSIC and FRANCAIS EE) bolt.flutes being cut in one end, while the other end fo flattened for use as & handle. The doit should be of such sise that it 18 necessary to torce the bolt into the dase, whieh, it will grip se that it io an ea - matter to ssfew it eut. urged by Herbert Hoover at the closs of the session of the Unemployment Conference in Washington, the Associat ed General Contractors of America have started a program of meetings of representative citizens, and gen- oral contractors in the prineipal cities of the country. This action was announced upon receipt of à letter from Mr.Hoover te W.O.Winston, President of the Associated General Contractors of America, in which the former said: : “You have doubtless noted the emphasis placed on construction by the President's Unemployment Conference as a means of relief for the present unemployment.“As I am advised that you and several members of your Executive Board are about to make an extended trip in the interest of the eun- struction industry, I express the several communities you visit the importance of getting under way at once the construction program outlined, which is felt to bs the key to the present situation.” It was shown at the conference that 200 men employed in construc tion would set to work from 600 to 700 men in other basic industries, such as lumber, cement, transportation, mining, manufacturing, ete.Meeting In behalf of an eggress- Ive program both national and local to start construction, will be addressed by W.O.Winston of Minneapolis, President of the Associated Contractors of America; W.A.Rogers of Chicago; F.L.Cranford, and D, A.Garber of New York: together with G.W.Buchholz.Secretary, and E.J.Harding, Amsistant Secretary of the national organization. That this construction program.cannot be gotten under way without the organized effort of the community and construction interests.will be the message carried by these leaders. While the construction of homes, schools, bulldings, highways streets, railroads.public works and repairs of all kinds, reclamation projects and hydro-electric developments, as urged by the National Conference on Unemployment, will undoubtedly directly set to work a million men who will in turn give work to milllons more, there is need ed first a thorough-going analysis of present construction costs in every city, including costs of finance Insurance and bonds, materials, labor, transportation and management. Moreover, there must be adequate provision for settling questions in dispute without the great Joss of time caused by strikes and lock-outs and thers must be alncers co-operation between organ izations representing every element of the construction industry.Work is Organised.Contra! committees of general contractors in each of the cities will be appointed as nucle! of a permanent organisation. The work now being done by similar organisations affiliated with the Associated General Contractors of America in other cities will be outlined, as fl- lustrative of what might be accomplished, Under the direction of General R.C.Marshall, Jr., formerly Chief of the Construction Division of the War Department and Chairman of the Construction Committee of the President's Unemployment Conference, this work has already heen organized in from 25 to 30 cities, covering in some Instances entire States. From headquarters In Washington, General Marshall, as General Manager of the Associated General Contractors of America, is already working through national committees of general contractors on labor, materials, methods, contracts, insurance and bonds, transportation, codes, legislation, information and statistics to bring about conditions which wil] make possible the carrying out of the construction program outlined by the President's Conference., The organization of focal conference boards representing architects, engineers, contractors and labor to handle local jurisdictional dfsputes and other local construction problems will be recommended.Close co-operation wth national headquarters in the entire campaign will be assured through monthly, weekly and special bulletins and reports. The cities include the following: Minneapolis, Des Moines, Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City, Bpokane, Seattle, Portland, Ore., San Francisco, Lna Angeles, Ki Paso, Dalins, Oklahoma Cit.Kansas City, and ft.Louis.Other cities interested should Valparaiso Although Defoe himself des Crusce's island as being off mouth of “Oroonoque,‘’ and thuus- ands of miles from Juan Fernandes, yet it seems to be taken for granted that the actual original of Crusos was Alexander Selkirk, who passed four lonely years om this lonely spot of land in the Pacific.Juan Fernandes, which the Chllean government now proposes to turn into a kind of health resort, is 420 miles west of Valparaiso, end though rocky is by no means barren it is 13 miles long and 4 broad and ity peaks rise up to 3,000 feet in height. The vegetation ls wonderful, declares a recent visitor. The native growth is mostly tree terns, but the yuinces pears, peaches, and grapes which Selkirk himself, or other early settlers planted, have run wild and covered the Valleys. There is plenty of life, too, for not only goats but also pigs and ponies run wild. The sea swarms of cod, which is an excellent food fish. There are also quantities of seals. Some fifty years ago the Chilean authorities formed a plan for colon- Ising the island, and gave free pass- nge to à number of emigrante. But the scheme was a failure, and today the island has only about fifty inhabitants, most of them of German origin, Earlier still the island waa used by Chill as a penal settlement but ships were scarce, and more than once the convicts and warders too were left without supplies.Selkirk himself was one of a crew of buccaneers. He quarreled with his skipper and was marooned at his own request. That was in 1704.He remained on the island for four years and four months, when he was rescued by Captain Rogers who described him as “man dressed in goat-skins, and wilder in appearance than the goats themselves.” Selkirk really did have a man “Friday,” an Indian whom he found in the woods and rescued from death. But the poor fellow was drowned while fishing. The cave or grotto which Selkirk used as a house is still to be seen Around the walls are the shelves and a cupboard which he made. The visitor is also shown a look-out point, a lofty spur of rock which the castaway is sald to have climbed Law every day in the hope of attracting the attention of a passing ship. Some years ago a Chill surveying party discovered on this point the remains of an old flagstaff deeply embedded in the earth, probably the very one which Selkirk put up.In 1868 one of our own warships visited the island and erected « tabiet to Selkirk's memory.(THREE BODIES WASHED ASHORE Terrific Gale Strikes Anglesea Fishermen — 11 Drowned When Boats Capsized Anglesea,
