King GINGER BEER Effort To Bend Back Our Lines Fails Of Object—No Change Of Importance Took Front — Something Of A Mystery Exists In Eastern Theatre For tne first time in weeks no change of importance was reported in any theatre of the war Thursday. The most violent figisting took place on the western end of the British salient on the Somme.Six times the Germans advanced in force in a desperate effort to bend back the British lines north-west of Pozieres.London reports that all of these assaults were repulsed with heavy losses and that the British in turn captured about one hundred yards of trenches north-west of Bazentin. An interesting feature of the situation on the western front is that the Germans, contrary to their usual practice, have so far wd no attempt to deliver a counter-attack in the region where the French tnd British claim to have captured nearly three miles of trenches on Wedne: day.The French are busily consolidating their gains and report no actiof of importance on any section of their front including the Verdun region.Something of a mystery exists as to the situation on the eastern front, For two consecutive days the Russians have confined themselves to brief statements that nothing of importance had occurred. The Austrian and German War Office have been equally uncommunicative.| The only fights ing mentioned by Vienna was the repulse of Russian attatks on the lines of General Von Boehm-Ermolli, who is in command of the Teutonic forces retiring from the Tarnopol frout.Berlin reports the repulse of Russian attacks south of Brody. The lull in the Italian operations against Triest is unofficially explained from Rome as due to General Cadorna’s desire to straighten his lines before proceeding with a general offensive against the great Austrian seaport.Austrian seaplanes have again raided Venice but Rome says that they caused only slight damage.FRENCH LOSSES REDUCED TO MINIMUM.Paris, Aug.17—"The operations on the Somme yesterday were merely explained today to the Associated Press, “but significance is derived from a detail of the offensive and of only local bearing,” a high military officer explained today to the Associated Press, “but significance is derived from the fact that the Germans did not counter-attack as usual.Never before have they failed to react when successfully attacked and their failure to do so in this case is either a sign of weakness or, more likely, because of confusion of orders.“The precision with which the French offensive has been carried out is shown by the fact that every objective designated, in advance of an action has been reached. At Maurepas acertain number of heuses were selected and every one of them was captured it never was intended to attempt the occupation of the entire village.“One consequence of this precision in the French operations is the reduction of losses to a minimum. The operations in Artois and in Champagne cost five times more than all the ground gained on the Somme. The purpose is to destroy the German forces and the Franco-British defensive also has accomplished the feat of holding on the western front the greater possible portion of the German forces. It ig fallicious to figure out rhe probable duration of hostilities on French soil by computing the average surface of ground gained per day.Every time an action takes place, even though the gain may be no more than a hundred years or so, the opposition is beaten. He loses heavily and the weakening moral effect cannot be mesured in yards. It is a cumulative effect which sooner or later will wear the enemy down so that he will be unable to hold the French gains to a few hundred yards.” THINK BREMEN 18 CAPTURED.New York, Aug.17—The passengers who arrived today from London on the Cunarder Alunia were confident that they had seen the new German commercial submarine Bremen in tow of two British warships off Deal on Sunday night, Aug.6th, when their vessel was at anchor in the Downs. The officers and crew of the Alaunia admitted they had seen what they believed to be a captuied submarine passing through the Downs but could not say that it was the Bremen. The Alaunia was due to leave Tilbury docks, London, on August 3, but on account of a shortage in her crew she had to wait two days in the tiver Thames, and arrived in the Downs on Sunday about noon, where she was ordered to anchor. The Cunarder had no guns to protect her from the German submarines, and sha had to wait there forty-eight hours while several armed merchantmen went to sea.Just after dark on Sunday night two cruisers approached the Alaunia coming from the channel and towing a long covered boat resembling a submarine that was swung on chains made fast on board the two warships, There wers three destroyers astern and two ahead, and all seven vessels were steaming about ten knote through the Downe toward Sheernes where there is à naval dock yard.BRITISH
