wisit Beatty's battle cruiser fleet, from which I have just returned,” said à naval ofticer of high rank to The As sociated Press today. He added: “The officers and men are in splendid fettle.Instead of feeling depressed, they are inclined to feel sorry for the poor Germans. It is impossible to speak too highly of the officers and men of our destroyers, who were sim- bly wonderful They consistently held _the wpper hand in the greatest vice battle ever engaged in by these little warcraft.“Until we have Admiral Jellicoe's full report, which is being coliected and digested as rapidly as possible, it is quite out of the question for me to give any more connected details of the battle than have been published. But I can relate a few incidents anil give some impressions, which may show something of the spirit cf our men.As for the fleet itself, it is quits ready for another battle as big as the Jutland section.“The gallant exploit of the :om- ander of a destroyer is one of the most striking incidents of the action, which abounded in extraordinary features, This destroyer, fifth in the line.saw her four-file leaders, one by one put out,of action, but kept ahead without serving and got all her torpedoes home. She then discovered a grea: German battleship looming out of the mist so closely that when the enem fired his big guns their blasts blew over the funnels and masts of the little warship. She escaped witho +: fur ther damage.“Another marvellous escape of one of our’ destroyers was discovered when a stokeF reported: hi-nselt wounded, But as no shell had struck the ship, the commander declined t) believe the man He, however, reported himself again the next morning as a casualty and showed the commander a 12-inch unexploded projec tile which had dripped through the hatchway into the hold.“A similar incident occurred aboard the battle cruiser Lion where two Junior officers from the fighting top saw an unexploded 12-inch projectile tying on the deck in some burning debris. These officers ran to the fire and extinguished it and threw the projectile overboard.»] was surprised on my return here, where I saw for the first time the official German admission of casnalties and personnel, which show from the news that the losses of the German ships-must have been greater than our own.“Our officers admit that the German gunnery was good, but nut as destructive as ours.At first the light was much in their favor, but, towards the end, our manouevring changed this. The result was, in the general opinion of the officers and men of our ships Which were engaged in the action, that the German fleet received such a strafing that it is not likely to make ses for six monthe.84-96 St.John Street.Phones 1847-1348, CHURCH UNION AND THE PRESBYTERIANS MAJORITY OF PRESBYTERIES ARE CONSIDERED IN FAVOR OF IT.Winnipeg, June 8—Leaders in the Presbyterian Church, addressed a meeting held in connection with the general assembly. The speakers included Rev.Dr.N.A.MacKinnon, of Regina; Rev.Dri 5.C.Murray, formerly nf Port Ar- | thur.and for many years Superintendent of Home Missions in Manitoba; J.H.Edmison, secretary of the Home Mission committee, and Rev.Dr.J.;6.Shearer, superintendent of the ‘ Work of Evangelism and Social Ser- The first reference to the Church Union issue occurred in the afternoon, when‘ Rev.Dr.John Somerville, one of the two clerks of the Assembly, presented a statement of his opinion regarding the vote of the Presbyteries on this subject.During the past winter all the presbyteries of the church.seventy-six in number, were asked to record their decisions on this issue. There now seems to be considerable difference of opinion regardirg the vote which these Presbyteries did cast. The union committee reports that the vote was 40 to 12 in favor of union.with three ties, five Presbyteries in which the vote was void on account of the irregularities in the voting, and two doubtful.Rev.Dr.Robert Campbell, on the other hand, who is a leader of those opposed to union, signed a statement as clerk of the Assemblycertifying that less than thirty-nine preshyteries voted in favor of union, which, if true.would mean that the cause of union was definitely lost, Rev.Dr.Somerville, in presenting a special report on remits to presbyteries.stated that, after canvassing the returns on church union, he found that 41 presbyteries out of the 76 had voted for union, beyond all doubt and that eight others had sent in returns which were not absolutely corect in point of law, hut which were unmis- takeably favorable to union.Five presbyteries, he said, did not vote, five allowed absent members to vote, which is contrary to the rule; in two cases it appeared doubtful what the preshytery meant.and in three cases there was a tie. This general matter was referred to a special committee, to be named by the Moderator, to report on the vote of the presbyteries.J.K.MacDonald, of Toronto, made a report on a special matter from the Board of Trustees of the Assembly. These trustees have in their care all the general funds of the Church held for investment. For many years it has been the custom of the treasurer of the church to make use of a certain portion of these funds in order to finance the organization through the year, paying back the borrowings at the close of the year, when the money from the congregations comes In.Owing to the depression which began at the close of 1912, the treasurer, in recent years, has been unable to repay those borrowings, which now amount to about $100,000.The trustees con sequently appesled to the Assembly for some directions in the matter, as they are to some extent lable under the law.large congregation in Westminster ; the Russians aïe prépeing their adversaries westward. In numerous places not only have the Russians gained the banks of the Ikwa and Styr rivers, but have crossed these streams, and continued their offensive against their foes.In the region of Kovel, halfway between Lutsk sad Brest-Litovsk, and in the vicinity af Rovno, southeast of the fortress, the Russians have begun actions against the Austro-Hungarians.Likewise in Galicia thefe has been no let up in the Russian attacks sgainct the soldiers of the dual monarchy, from whom they have captured along the lower reaches of the Stripa river heavily fortified positions. In the fighting the Russians have materially added to their prisoners and their stores of captured guns, machine guns and war matefials.Considerable activity has been shown by the Germans sgainst the Rugsians or the northern sections of the Russian front, where the German guris have heavily bombarded the line along the Dvina ta the Lake region south of Dvinsk and thiown infantry attacks against the Russian positions south of Smorgun. In this latter region, the Germans report the capture of the village of Kunawa but Petrograd asserts that all their attacks were repulsed. With the capture of Fort Vaux, northeast of Verdun, the Germans have attempted to advance their line against the French east and west of the Thisumont farm.south of Dousumont. The French barrier fire, however, held them back, Northwest of Verdun, around Hill 304 and in the region of Chattancourt the artillery duels are still intense.Intermittent artillery duels have given way to viclous infantry attacks, and counter-attacks by the Germans and British around Hooge.Sapping operations between the Vimy ridge and La Basse canal and near the Hohensollern were to the advantage of the British according to London. The Italiane to the south snd southeast of Trent continue to keep the Austrians from further advange .Sowth and south-west of Asiero attacks by the Auserians against Italian positions were entirely repulsed according to Rome with in the Algerina valley concentrations of Austrians were dispersed by the Italian batteries.Northwest of Trent, in the Ortler region, the Italians have attacked and captured several points of vantage from the Austrians, and further south, in the Criez valley have repuised Austrian offensives.Although it had beer: believed that ths the ovefthrown enemy, and following a battle in the region of Lutsk, we occupied that town.In many places we have seized not only the lines of the rivers Ikwa and Styr, but have crossed the mand continued our affensive.“In Gilicia, on the lower Stripa, our Infantry, supported by artillery fires, has captured by an energetic advance a number of powerful enemy otpanised positions on the front of Trziboukhovtsky-Jazlovets, and have arrived quite near the line of the Stripa river.“In addition to the 40,000 prisoners previously taken, we took in the courre of yesterday's fighting 88 officers and about 11,000 men, and captured a nymber ¢f guns and machine guns, a quantity of other weapons, field kitchens.and transport material. The results of the engagements from the fourth ta the seventh in Vilhynia and Galicia permit us to consider that we have already gained an important victory, which is crowned by t great bfeach in the enemy's fortified front.“On the Dvins front and in the lake region south of Dvimsk, there have been violent fusillades at many places, The Germans have bombarded by a concentrated fire the Ikskull bridgehead.Repeated German attempts to advance in the region south of Smorgon were frustrated by our fire.South of Kravo the enemy artillery fired gusts on our positions .“In the Caucasus the situation is unchanged” The official Rusian statement of yesterday, announced the capture fiom the beginning of the offensive movement of 900 officers and more than 60,000 men go that the number given today brings up the total to well over a.m.—8pecial despatches from Petrograd express the belief that the Ruseian successes againet the Austrians are far more important than appears from the official announcements. The Daily Telegraph's correspondent ventures the assertion on the authority of a prominent Russian expert that all five of the Austrian armies are on the eve nf a general retreat and that Lemberg is in great strategic 4 danger, On the same anthority ‘it is asserted that “a stfategic breach, 100 miles wide, has been blown in the Austrian front, involving the armies of General Count Vop Bothmar and Geeral Voa Boshm-Ermolli, and part of that of Archduke Joseph Ferdinand.” According to other despatches the Russian success is largely due to the precedented wee of artillery, surpassing any efforts on either aide on the eastern front. The retreat of many Austrian trench detachments was completely cut off by a curtain of shrapnel through which it was impossible for any living thing to pass, and the Austrians were thus compelled to surrender en masse. The Times entimptes the Austrian losess at 500,000, STERN MEASURES AGAINST GREECE LONDON EXPRESSES RELIEF THAT ENTENTE ALLIES WILL FORCE MATTERS.London, June 8.—The editorials in the London morning papers are largely taken up by the sitestion in Greece. The leaders unanimously ex press relief that the Entente at last has decided to take strong measures to end the anomalous situation in Greece, and the belief is general that Greece will be compelled to capitulate in a short time.Although it is not known what demands have heen made upon Greece, the Daily Telegraph and other morning papers express the hope that it is nothing short of the demobilization of the Greek army. The Post says: “Greece is confronted with a serious emergency. It is in the power of the Allies to close the sea against her, and her many rich island p sessions may become endangered.” The Daily Graphic says: "If lesser measures are insufficient to prevent Greece from aiding the enemy, we shail doubtless proceed to a full blockade of Greek ports.Bulgarian troops certainly would pot be allowed to occupy Greek forts unless the Greek government had vir- taully decided to throw in its lot with the Central Powers. The reply of the Entente Powers is prompt and will be decisive.” The Weather Toronto, June 8~The important OF THE SEVENTIES.Irishmen liked to claim Lord Kitchener as a countryman of theirs on the ground that he was born at Gunsborough Villa, County Kerry, on June 24th, 1650.But although his father, Colonel Henry Horatio Kitchener, had migrated to Ireland from Leichestershire two years before the birth of his son Herbert, the family is East Anglian, and in the little Suffolk village of Lakenheath there are records of the Kitcheners going back when Thomas Kitchener and his wife Abigail came thither from Hampshire in the reign of the third William. His mother's family, the Chevalliers of Aspail, in the same old eastern country, have possessed Aspail Hall for over two centuries, and it was in recognition of his mother's family home that Kitchener associated in his title the name of the little East Anglian village with that of Khartoum.Ireland has given many g:eat soldiers to the Empire — notably Lord Roberts-dut “silly” suffolk produced the stock from which sprang Earl Kitchener of Khartoum and Aspail.“A Shy, Self-Contained Boy.” As a boy he seems to have imprèss- ed observers in different ways.old friend of the family describes him as a “manly, active and spirited little fellow who could not keep quiet, and consequently, like all boys of his kind, used to get into scrapes, but had great tuck in getting out of them.” other says “he was a smart intelli gent, growing-up lad, promising to be a smart young fellow”; while a third remembers him as “quiet and taciturn, good at books, but taking a bad place in outdoor games and gymnastics To a fourth he was “a shy, self-contained boy, who early showed a talent for figures.” “K's® friends of his famous days will readily recognize these early sprouts of his later qualities. His First Scent of Powder. They soon bore fruit in an eagerness for the useful experience which crossed his path. Thus even before he entered the army in 1871 he had had a taste of actual wur. While still a Woolwich cadet he was staying during a vacation with his father in Brittany, for the Irish estates had been sold.France's last desperate struggle against the German hosts was being fought out by brave but iil-organized armies of hastily-raised levies.Young Kitchener offered his services to the French, was accepted.and fought under General Chanzy in the operations around Le Mans.It was to be rememhered afterwards when he and Captain Marchand gat- tantly drank to one another on the Nile at Fashoda.A Son of the Wilderness. But we need not go out of our way to seek for early germs of K's after greatness. He would be the first to deny that there was any finer quality in his nature than is to be found in the generality of young Anglo- Saxon soldiers. But he was subjected to a novitiate which has produced many of the world's finest souls. He was let forth into the wilderness. He did not adopt 8 raiment of camel's hair or a menu of locusts and wild honey, but the strong refle:tive elements in his nature, the self-sufficing, self-reliant were developed and hardened into wondrous temper in the free atmosphere and vast lonely spaces of the deserts. The Tale of a Telegram.1t was characteristic of so uncon- véntional a nature that his first step to fortune and greatness was a piece of indiscipline. He was on leave in Alexandria on the eve of the famous bombardment, and knowing that a telegram recalling him to Cyprus was A Man's Worth depends upon his power to produce what the world recognizes as of value. And when you skirmish around you'll find that this power — which is just power of mind and body — depends to a remarkahle degree on the food one eats.An.An-! 2-————— imminent he arranged with a friendly pressman to delay its reaching his hands until the weekly boat to Cyprus had gone.Lieutenant Kitchener with™his, at that time, unrivalled knowledge of the natives and their languages, was, of course, a welcome ‘find for any commander like Lord a comparatively unknown couptry.Accordingly his services were retained and from that moment his future was assured. He Wanders Garbed as an Arab. There followed twelve months’ unremitting labor, broken only by a journey to Sanai, and then as an intelligence officer, he disappeared into the desert to the south. His nature had become fully responsive and attuned to the voice of the wilderness, and it was a call he could not resist. For two years he wandered from Cairo to Abu Hamed, from Berber to the Red Sea.The Arab whose language he spoke snd whose garb he wore met him sometimes in far-away villages, in crowded bazars, or in desert oases.Living the life of the native, he talked trade and commerce with cross-leg- ged Arab merchants between puffs of with Bisbareen sheikhs by palm-shad- | ed wells in the Lybian deserts. And "all the time he was absorbing that | vast store of information and knowledge which in due season, after fifteen long years, was to materialize tn the regeneration of the Soudan.Kitchener's Waya joke at ordinary times.when hard work or fighting was afoot he froze into an uncompromising severny.Hence the constant triumph of his subordinates over apparently insuperable difficulties.Once, in a blazing Soudan summer, a young officer on a desert post, to whom an order had been sent, was down with a touch of sunstroke. It was a direct contravention of K's regulations, for every one of his offie- ers had to be fit and ready to march in K's invariable half-an-hour in any direction. One of K's staff thoughtlessly pleaded the young officer's physical incapacity.“Sunstroke!” replied K.“What the devil does he mean by having sunstroke?Send him down to Cairo at once.” As this was K's invariable sentence of professional death, the staff-nfficer huriedly wired to his friend a warning that he was under a delusion and was quite well. The order was somehow carried out, and nothing more was heard of the matter. The Only Man Who Even “Talked Back.” Only one man is ever known to have given back-talk to Kitchener in the matter of an order. When at the most critical stage of the long advance towards Khartoum the all-im-.portant desert railway was bemg pushed into the gleaming wastes of rock and sand beyond Wady Halfa.K.one day made a sudden descent upon the officer in charge of the work and strongly objected to some method of construction. It might well have silenced some men.But the young, and at that time unknown, soldier of French- Canadian extraction, Percy Girouard, looked calmly in the eyes of th: dreaded chief and replied deliberate ly: “Look here, sir, am 1 working this job or are you!" Kitchener laughed.“Go on,” he said.“Do it your own way.” He knew his man and the qualities which gave him such faith in himself.K.'s “Must.” The following story affords an interesting comparison, between K.'s way and that,of other comanders. It occurred in South Africa: Lord Roberts, requiring some important work to be carried out, sent for a senior officer and gave him his instructions.“How soun do you think you can put it through?” inquired the kindly old chief, adding, “I know you'll do the best you can.” “I'll try to do it in a fortnight, sir,” was the reply.“Well, I know you'll do your best” smiled Lord Roberts, Wolseley, committed to operations in | his chibouk, or Soudanese politics! § E 18 HOSIERY—Silk Hosiery Genial, affable, kindly, and fond ot 2 eee siderable social influence but little discretion resolved ftr the interests of n young soldier to make 3 direct appeal to K.himself.She besought a personal intervigw. The sirdar excused himself.Nothing daunted, the lady presented herself at K.'s official quarters at a time which usually claimed his attendance in the daily routine of business.K.posted an officer on guard with strict injune- tions.Twice the wouldibe intruder was | induced by this look-out man to believe the sirdar had escaped her.Ace | cordingly she timed her next visit tor a more promising hour. The watchman again stood in the breach.“How dare you tell me he is not here!” she gasped.“You shall not stop me.” _And before the surprised officer could muster sufficient resolution to bar the way the nemy had rushed the position with a wild rustle of silk petticoats and parasol at the charge.Down the passage went the attack, and with unerring mstinct into a room at the end. Here, lo and behold, was a tall man engaged in some ablutions and garbed in a deshabille , of shirt and nether garments who, | with the genius of the great general ‘that he was, at once took cover be- | hind a table and a couple of chairs. The avenger of Gordon afterwards acknowledged that but for the furniture zareba he must have been lost. But help was at hand, and by e series of masterly operations the siege was raised. It was, perhaps, the closest shave the great chief ever had, and long after, when reference was made to this terrible adventure, Kwould observe with uplifted hands and eyes, “That awful woman!” The most splendid monument to Kitchener's exceptional grestness hoth as a statesman and soldier, aside from his part in the present war, will always be his labors for the people of Egypt and the Soudan.Spoken of reverently as “El Lord" or “Kooch-Nohr,” he was regarded by the masses of the people almost as a semi-divinity, such as were Seti and Rameses by the Egyptians the first squad sailed on March 1, the second an April 1, and the remainder are | shortly to follow, Some of the men took their families and household goods, though a majority of them went unaccnmpanied.Fifteen thousand tons of cast iron pipe.all madei n the United States of America.will he used in this con- | struction.Thousands nf picks, shovels, crowbars, and other hand implements, and dozens of big engines, steamshovels .concrete Mixers and derricks were needed, and had to be mobilized in a hurry for the beginning of operations this spring. They were shipped in spite of the freight embargo several weeks agen, and are probably in Uruguay by now. This was before the purchase of the Alice —— ee OCEAN SAILINGS.Transatlantic sailings list compiled by F.8.Stocking, General Steamship Agent, 32 St.Louis street, Quebec.Subject to Change.June.From To 3—Chicago N.Y.Bordeaux “St Paul .N.Y.Liverpool *=-Orduna .N.Y.….Liverpool 6&—Ausonia .Quebec.Falmouth and London 8—Pretorian.Quebec.Glasgow 9—Cretic .N.Y.Mediterranean 10—New York.N.Y.Liverpool “—Tuscania .NY.Liverpool and Glasgow *—-Rochambeau .N.Ÿ.Bordeaux “—Sicilian .Quebe Liverpool | 13—Cassandra.Quebec.Glasgow 17—California.N.Y.Liverpool and Glasgow *—Ryndam N.Y.Falmouth and Rotterdam “La Touraine .N.Y.Bordeaux "Philadelphia .N.Y.Liverpool “—Pannonia .N.ŸY.Falmouth and Lonaon 21—Baltic .N.Y.Liverpool « —Corinthisn oe Quebec.London 24—Carpathia .N.Y.Liverpool “—Espagne N.Y.Liverpool * —Scandinavian .Quebec.Liverpool “St.Louis.N.Y.Liverpool 26—Noordam .N.Y.Falmouth and Rotterdam “—Adriatie.N.Y.Liverpool 20—Metagama .Quebec.Liverpool No 206 ST.JOHN STREET.* a=Carthaginian , Quebec.Glasgow con- 1 Chicago, | M.Colburn, She will serve the rou- .| tine needs of the job, carrying down supplies for the commissary and for the other departments of the construction organization, making the rips as fast as she can up the coast f the two Americas and back again.SHIPPING NOTES.The steam barge Robert Rhodes with a cargo of pulp from Anticosti passed up yesterday morning.Cunard Line steamer Frincipello passed this port yesterday bound for Montreal, The steam barge Howard W.| left the inner basin yesterday for above after unloading a cargo vi coal for the Canadian Import Co.Since the opening of navigation over twenty shipments of pulpwood have been made from l'ort uu Saumon to Odgfiensburg, N.Y.This represents about twenty thousand cord of pulpwood whicli has been shipped from one place alone in a little over a month. It is expected that about 80,000 cords oi pulpwood will be shipped from Port au Saumon during this season.— PREIGHTS AND CHARTERS New York, Junes—The {| eamet market was unchanged, tliere being a moderate demand for tonnage, with rates holding fairly steady.Quotations to Liverpool, London and Glasgow, 17d: cotton to Liverpool, per 100 Ibs.$1.75.Charters: British steamer, 6,000 tons.dead weight, orc and general cargo, Bombay to two ports north ; New York, June 8—Considerations arising from the political situation governed today's market to an unusual extent, even though trading was characterized by greater breadth and underlying strength.Rails were again the outstanding features, infusing a degree of confidence which served to offset occasiongl uncertain tendencies elsewhere in the list.Shares of the coal roads festured the active opening, with a revival of last month's movement in Reading, which made an extreme advance of 1 3-8 to 60 1-2, all of which and more was lost before the close.Greater stability was shown by other issues of that particular division, notably Chesapeake and Ohio, which rivalled Reading in point of prominence and regirtered an advance of 3 1-8 to 67 3-4, all of which was retained.New York Central, Illinois Central, St.Paul and shme of the Southern division held or added to recent gains, with ‘moderate recessions in the final hour. The statement of the Interstate Commerce Commission for April, disclosing net gains by 165 reads of almost 25,000,000 over the corresponding month of 1915, was not without effect in that group, even though the government crop report on spring and winter wheat, published at the fag end of the session proved somewhat disappointing.Shipping shares were only second to rails, United Fruit ascending 2 3-4 to the new record of 169 1-2, while Marine preferred shook «ff some of its recent heaviness on more reassuring reports respecting the terms of reorganization.Automobile stocks and accessories were only moderately active and firm with a belated demand for Studebaker at a sul stantial gain, and most war issues remained in the background, but United States Smelting rose to a new maximum on its advance of 1 3-8 ‘o 80 1-2 as did also American Beet Sugar, which made a gain of 1 3-4 to 83 3-4.Stronger tendencies were also manifested at times by some of the high priced specialties, American Coal Products, Anferican and International Papers, being among those affected.Totals sales of stocks amounted to 595.000.Bonds reflected the uncertain moves of investment issues with heavy offerings of Anglo French 5's at a slight concession, Total sales (par value) aggregated $3,970,000.NEW YORK STOCK MARKET By private wire to Bruneau & Dupuis, Stock Brokers.11.13 and 18 Sault-au-Matelat Street.Tel 1808 Open.High.Low Close .bronze, Havana brown, and ach The very newest American shoes MEN'S and BOYS BOOTS MISSES and CHILDREN'S BONTS Pheus 7.Am Beet Sug.8234 83% 8154 #315 | Spanish River pid—28 at 32.demand and Cedars Bouds sold at Am Can Co.56% 56% 88% 35% oll ‘Phone Bonds—$3,000 at 98.90.There was fair demand for in- Am Car Fdy.60 60% 80% 59% | Dominion Iron Bonds—$5.000 at 87.| vestment securities such as Bell Te- Am Loco .V4 1% 7014 70% Dominion Coal Bonds—$1000 at lephone which sald at 151 1-2 and Am S & R.99% 00! 97% 071; 05%.Dominion Iron preferred 105.Dom- Am Sug Ref.11034 111 110% :11 Méntreat Power Bonds—4% p.c.| inion Iron opend at 58 and closed at AmT & T.130 .AR $1,006 at 92.87 1-2.Their statement is an excel- Ana Mining … 83% 84 8334 83%; Quebec Railway Bonds—$13,000 a: | lent one and is good example of how AT &S Fe.105% 105% 10534 10554 8.7 the steel industries are doing today.Bid'wn Loco.89% 90 80 suii]| Steel Company of Canada Bonds, Steel Co.of Canada was steady at 62 Balt & Ohio.9224 9234 9172 91% |g; 000 at 96%.to 62 1-2.Lyall made a new high ie RT.874 .x.War loan Bonds— $2,800 at 99, advancing to 86.Mobile Power was Cem Leather Noss wr I viel $5.000 at 99, 54.000 at w.steady at 240; Cedars 79., % 2 L —5 at 531%.— Ches & Ohio.64% 6274 G43 67% Waysgamack 3 at 30%.* CLOSING LETTER.Cr x - Pr ne id es nids Lourentide-Power—75 at 55.Bruneau 4X (Dupuis, Stock Brokers, cee ! 3 rer 13.18, -au-Maielot, Qu I Crucinte Sel.8434 i 8414 sk A.A.Gingras, Manager.“ (Distillers .47 47la 47 47% CLOSING MARKET LETTERS.New York, June 8—There is no Lrie .70 3045 38% 1013 | By Private Wire to Bre:n & Gour- | news from the convention, at least do 1st pid.54 , Sata 84 S4Ls| demu, Stock Brokers, Telephone | tone that amounts to anything. We Gt Nor pfd .32134 12374 121% 122 No.185.hope that the Republicans will get G N Ore ctfs.37% 37% 3744 37% | New York, June 8—Stock market i together. If they do not I shall cx- lils Central .107% 10814 107% 20714 valuesbacke d and filled today in ' pect lower prices.1i they do com.Ins Cop .46 46 45% 45% | the same aimless fashion that char- ‘ bine on a good man, auch action InCCorp.18% 1874 18 18% | acterized the previous session of the | should prove a decided stimulant to do pfd ce 76 77 7 kd the week, and with no impairment of ; the market. Many think.that no | In M Marine.25 25% 25 23% | the general market's undertone ap- | matter what happens the market is ! de pfd oa.0676 9R WEY 0714 | parent.Prices moved very irreg- | over bought and will mcei 80 much ! this has resulted in severe criticism’ from British, French and Russian residents and traders. It concludes that whatever trade the Germans | and Austrians are carrying on in Japan is in competition with, and to | the disadvantage of, Japan and her allies.and expresses the conviction that a more strict construction should .be placed on the privilege of peaceful | trade and residence.if.indeed, it be not withdrawn altogether, The chicf causes of complaint raised by the residents of countries in ; alliance with Japan in the present | war are cited to be the following 1° First, that many Germans and Austrians in Japan are allowed as much freedom in their daily round of life as the other foreign residents. This is not the case in any other allied country.2 .i Second, that.enjoying such freedom, enemy firms continue to enrage in trade in competition with allied merchants.Third.that in an attempt to cover ‘ up their enemy characteristics the German firms in « number of instances have adopted names of Japanese employes.thus to outsiders | becoming to all intents and purposes Japanese firms.Fourth, that the German bank‘ known as the Deuteche-Asiatic Bank iis allowed to remain open at Yokohama, and continues to do financial business with an apparently unlimited supply of ready money, Fifth.that the German Club.situated opposite the Yokohama Foreign Post office.copenlv keeps up its social activities and that sounds of revelry and rejoicing over allied reverses are openly allowed within the Sixth.that German firms are al lowed all the privileges of the post office the telegraph.patent laws and other business facilities in open | éompetition with allied interests.Seventh, that there are clear sigus | of German intrigue in Japan.espec- indications that the Germans in this country are eager.despite what has hap- | pened in Furope, to infuse themsel- | ves as much as possible Into every branch of national life in Japan. After pointing out that Japan has not forbidden her subjects to trade with the enemy countries the Times declares that the majority of Japanese business men whose experience has taught them to look broadly into the future believe that Japan could with profit to herself enact legislation making it illegal to trade with the enemy.Failure to join the Allies In the trading prohibition will, it is alleged | cause the Japanese to lose much trade.not 10 mention that Japan lays hersell open to the suggestion that her business men could, if they desired, actually help Germany to win the war by acting as an intermediary for certain materials of which the Germans are in crying need.“The audacity of the Germans in newspaper, “has been positively startling and it is in the hope that the Imperial authorities will realize the necessity of taking some mea-: sures that the matter is being given publicity.” The articles of which the ahove is à resume are causing something of | In the schools of to-day there 13; found an alarming proportion of ‘weak, nervous children who have little chance of developing into healthy, useful men and women.Nature requires the aasistance of such treatment as Dr.Ch Nerve Fond to help them over a trying period and set them on their feet, There would be fewer wearing glasses if the nerves were invigorated, less irritation in the school and home, more robust health and a greater pleasure in the school tasks. This letter bears a cheering message to parents whose children are weak, puny snd nervous. It shows you what may be expected from the use of this great restorative.Mrs.Stephen Hartman, Italy Cross, Lunenburg, N.S., drites: “My little sister st eleven yesrs of age became nervous, irritable and seemed all tired out.She had no Girl a Nervous Wreck At Eleven Years of Age Was Tired Out, Pale and Sallow-Would Tremble Till the Bed Would Shake—Dr.Chase's Nerve Food Cured Her.her complexion grew pale and 2 Finally she had to keep her bed oni have somebody with her all the time, She was afraid of everything, ime | Bet excited and tremble till the bed | would shake, As she seemed to be!
