Jan, 23-The anii- trust legislative program as outlined in bills made public yesterday is not the last word in proposed remedial fegislation to regulate big business. That the tentative measures submitted may be altered or extended was emphasized today in both branches of congress, and the President let it be known that he did not consider the form of the bills drafted closed.Pursuant to the purpose of admin istration leaders to exhaust the sub- fect, it was determined by the House Judiciary and Senate Inter-State Commerce committees not to introduce at this tims.the measures relat- Ing Jan.23—Ia a narrow hallway in the County Jail this morning, James Taylor, the half-breed who, last September murdered Charles Dawson, à 13 year old boy, and then horribly mutilated his body, leaving :t on the roadside, where it was found the next morning, was executed.Taylor, always of a sullen demeanor, bore up well until the end.Last night he showed signs of weakening, being quite sick until midnight, and beef tea and other non-intoxicat- ing stimulants wer administered, After midnight he slept fairly well, until about 4 o’clock this morning, when, without being aroused he got up and dressed in his ordinary street clothes. All that he asked for breakfast was an egg, but when this, some toast, and beef tes were secured for him, he did not touch them.He had not a word to say before going to his death. When the executioner came to his cell he quietly rose and submitted to his hands being fastened behind his back, walking with firm step and bowed head, he then followed the bang man, a young fellow, who goes by the name of Jack Holmes, and whe has officiated at 28 vious hangings, into the death cell , Wis iritual advisar.rho had beso with m all night.Ks the bhick cap and house uninhabitable uutil the necessar repairs are made. The families occupying the building are Joscph Pelletier, ar, Joseph Pelletier, jr., Mathias Pelletier, and Octave Pichette. The fire which broke out in the upper storey was caused by a little girl letting a lamp fall in a wardrobe. An alarm from box 144 at 7.29 o’clock, summoned the firemen from three stations, and despite the headway which the flames had gained, they managed to extinguish the blaze within half an hour. There is considerable damage to the upper story by fire, but the most damage was caused by smoke and water. The stir unitl dissolved, | Take one tablespoonful four times a day.The first dose prouiptly ends the most distressing head noises, headache dullness, cloudy thinking.‘etc, while the hearing rapidly returns as the system is invigorated.Loss of smell and mucys dropping in the back of the throat are other symptoms that show the presence of cacarrhal poison and which are quickly overcome by this cfficacious treatment.Nearly ninety -per cent.of all ear troubles lare directly caused by catarrh, therefore there are but few people whose hearing cannot be restored by this simple home treatment.Every person who is troubled with head noises catarrhal deafness, or catarrh in any form, should give this prescrintion à trial, There is nothing better, “» I Ya ‘above par” \\ le 3 IAN] .thousand words a week. Now, the length of the average novel does not usuglly exceed sixty thousand words so that during these .our -years Sir dward turned "ut an amount of work equal to ever eighty novels Literary aspirarts may well gare on thid Lictare—and refrdin from doing Hkewise, .=, , = em dre pen ee.ou v Bs OLDEST REGISTRAR.The record public service of Mr.Johu Smith, of Bhotteswell, Ranbury, Eng, has added lustte to a well-Y known name hy establishing a record.Ha is resigning his postion.as regis- bear go, bietha, -emd-deaths for the Cropredy district after fifty’ three years’ service. He is eighty years of age.and is the oldest regis.Important.—in ordering Parmint always specify that you want Double Strength; Question were again debated by the Senate today, Senator Daniel, of St.John, N.B., Sir MacKenzie Bowell, of Belleville, Ont, and Domville of Rothesay, N.B., being the speakers.; Senator Daniel took issue with Sir George Ross, who, on Thursday, des- eribed the Senate 88 a noh-partisan body.“How can that be when there is an opposition in the Senate and Sir George himself is the leader?” asked Senator Daniel, “to whom is the opposition? It is opposition to the Government, The Senate should be an independent body and 1 favor making it independent of both parties.” %enator Daniel urged that the political parties should come together on the question of defence.Sir MacKenzie Bowell referred to the cost of living problem.High wages went with the high prices and the only ones affected by the higher prices of necessaries were those on stat.d wages.Redistribution Question. With regard to re-distribution, Sir MacKenzie took issue with Sir George Ross who said the Senate had thrown out three distribution bills. He had looked up the record and had found that none of the bills thrown out had been general redistribution bills introduced constitutionally after a census. One was to take a single township from one riding to another to make a Liberal seat safe.It was introduced by a private member. The Senate had acted properly in throwing out these bills.A proper redistribution bill introduced constitutionally after a sensus was entitled to different treatment.Sir MacKenzie held that the reasons given by the Government for not Introducing the naval bill this session were satisfactory.Senator Domville urged that the Maritime Province ports be given justice by the Government and be treated.as generously as were west ern cities. He predicted that the people would demand satisfaction at the next election of the Protectionists, who were now clasping Canada like an octopus. The debate will continue Monday.RICHES OF WEST AFRICA.Some interesting particulars of the new trunk railway, the construction of which will form oge of “the: meat important features of Sir Frederick | Lugard’s administration of Federatzd Nigeria are given by Reuter’s Agency. The chan:e discovery of Port Harcourt, the coast terminus of the line, by Lieut.Hughes, R,N.R.the commander of the Government yacht Ivy, was made under dramatic cireum- stances, and the.fact that the projected railway will cut through the very heart of the mysterious and almost unknown centres of the strongest forms of juju and fetish worship should provide incidents which, as construction advances, will prove ust less exciting than those which attended the building of the Uganda Railway. The whole line, which will be 350 miles in length, of the standard African guage, is estimated to cost £3,- 000000, and to occupy four or five years in construction, For years past attention has been directed to the necessity for opening up a part of Africa which is not only the most thickly populated region on the continent, but also includes the richest palm oil belt in the world, and after the discovery of a coal-field at Udi extending for over a thousand square miles and yielding coal showing 75 per cent.of the value of the best Welsh coal, the question of a railway hecame more pressing.” Recently Lieut.Hughes found a hitherto uncharted creek which to the surprise of all showed a depth of 50 feet of water alongside a precipitous cliff 45 feet high, a condition of things unknown anywhere between Sierra Leone and the Congo. On this discovery beirg reported.the governor, in March last, commissioned the Director of Railways and the Director of Marine to investigate the matter, and as 2 result it was established that the newly-discovered creek, though not shown on any map, is really the main channel of the Bonny River.A remarkable series of cliffs en- tending for three-quarters of a mile and averaging 45 feet above high water was discovered among the swamps.Opposite these cliffs soundings showed a depth of 70 feet of water, Armed with machetes, the Director of Railways, the Director of Marine and the commander of the Ivy landed, and by means of à rope ascended the cliffs and cot through a section of almost impenetrable growth twelve feet in height, Lieut, Hughes then ascended à tree to view the country.A few people were met, and it was discovered that no white man had been there before, Further investigation showed that the general conditions of the place were such ae had never been hoped for on the West African coast, and’
