it was equally possible that the Company would do nothing.ILES FOR RIVERSIDERS CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AT TORONTO MOSTLY GO TO LOCAL CLUB.Toronto, April 23\u2014The feature of ; the final night of boxing at the Can- | adian Amateur Championships held at the Arena was the winning of five championships by the Riverside A.C.Only one out-of-town man won, that being W.L.Smith of Buffalo, who scored a knockout over J.Smith of the Beaver A.C., who succeeded in winning the 158-pound class, TWO NOVA SCOTIA GIRLS ARE BURNED TO DEATH Middleton, NS.April 23\u2014Two very similar accidents occurred in the Annapolis valley at about the same time yesterday afternoon.At North Kingston the seven-year-old daughter of Watson Smith.returning from school and seeing a fire burning in a Held.attempted to throw some hay upon the blaze, when her clothing caught fire.She was so terribly burned that she died in about an hour.At about the same time at Avonport the seven-year-old daughter of John Selby was fearfully burned, her clothing catching from a fire in the field She lingered until this morning, when che died xx 8 Th QUEBEC, THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 1913.GAS EXPLOSION IN COAL MINE KILLS 100 MEN MANY WHO ESCAPED BADLY BURNED 8AY MINE IS \u201cFULL OF DEAD PEOPLE.\" | Pitsburg, Aptil 23.\u2014Between 75 and 100 miners are believed to have lost their lives this afternoon as a result of a gas explosion in the Cincinnati mine of the Mononghaela River Consolidated Coal and Coke Company at Finleyville, 27 miles from this city.Only 78 men made their escape.Some of them , however, were badly burned.The bodies of several victims have been recovered.The mine is aflame.Rescue workis being carried on with difficulty owing to the fire and deadly fumes.The corps paterned after the mine force of the United States government.MANY BADLY BURNED.But few of the miners who reached the surface were in a condition to talk.From these little could be learned.Suffering from burns or fright the miners knew only that an explos- jon had occurred and that a large number of men were cither killed by the explosion or asphyxiated by the \u201cafter damp.\u201d : Several hours after the explosion seven foreign miners crawled from one of the entrances of the mine.All were seriously burned.They could give no connected account of conditions in the mine or their individual experiences.They all said that the \u201cmine was full of dead people.\u201d Business in Finleyville was suspended.The greatest excitement prevailed and practically the entire community rushed to the ill-fated mine.Relatives and friends of the men heneath the surface were frantic.Many of them had to be restrained.After à time a guard was placed, completely surrounding the entrances to the mine.and all persons except rescuers and mine officials were held at a distance.Fire Damp Responsible.A gas explosion is thought to have caused the disaster.although this fact has not been éxactly determined.Fire damp, it is said, may have heen responsible.Of the known dead all are Americans.\u2018They are John Green.Thomas Carter, son of William Carter.superintendent of thé mine: Robert Anderson.machine hoss;
