get into a row with the trades unions.For.a long time the students cherished un ambition to lave a clubhouse of their awn.Alter long negotistions they succeeded in getting from the city an old building , which had formerly been used by the faculty of the College of Medi-ine.There was a proviso, however, that the students whould preserve the his- ! toric parts of the building. In order | to do this and provide a proper meeting place, it was necessary to recon- | wtruct the building. The money for | this purpose was raised by the students by entertainments and aub | “scriptions and the work was begun.| The students were counting on being able to enter their new home on the 16th ot last January, but repeated strikes among the men employed on the building threatened to postpone Its completion indefinitely. The atu- deots finally got tired of waiting for the strikers to resume work, and determined to undertake to do the work with their own hands.Three storeys of the building were covered, and it was only necessary to place K5 metal girders in position®to allow the roof to be put en and ensble the plasterers and painters to complete the inside work.- Some of the students wore sent gv from France, and to-dav after more than a century, Quebec is found to abound in priceless mesterpiecss. Not only Is this a fact to be borne in mind, but also that long prior to the revolution and dating from the very earliest history of the French colonise- tion of Canada.old families brought over with them their family heirlooma, treasures thet had been * reventiy handed down from generation to pen- eration and w!il ave still being banded down, ¢ n-isting of rare paintings, furniture, ching, parcelain, books, rare enamels, clocks.jewellery and other priceless relics of antiquity. But among other rare paintings latelv discovered in Quebec is a masterpiece of transcendent value and interest. The work in question represents the Bupper of Our Lord ut Emmaus, and painted hv no Jess a painter, than i! great and grand Ttalian master, Inca Bhgnorelli.tbe comperr oi the greatest artiste of all time, who made possible the advent of the divine Mickel Angelo himeell. It is no gallery work, messures seven feet by six, and fa painted om canvass and in a remakable state of Preservation. In this magnificent composition, Our Lord is represented seated nt a table be twesn his two disciples in the aot of ‘breaking bread at the repast. The majestic figure of the resurrected Saviour is illumined by a wonderful halo, and depicted with an expression of muperhuman wisdom. The disciples on either side are portrayed in dramatic attitudes, expressing profound wonderment. The splendeour of the grouping and the magnificence of the amply folded costumes are distinetly cherae- teristic of this greatest of the masters works, “soul wrapped and steeped in thought profound.” The fine techni: que, the superb coloring, and chiaros- caro rable in their wonderful grasp.to- caro subtle in their wonderful handling combine te produce a wonderful effect almost illuminary.Through the window is a some where our Lord meets with His disciples, rendered ae was customary with the great masters to represent the subject.clearly by telling the story in various wavs in the same pioture to Impress the meaning more Jelkingly. This work is the property of tha Hon.John Shuinles. The National Gallery of london possesses four works by Skenorelli, ane of which cama from the Duke of Hamilton's collections, and the Lourse contains only one specimen. We give a few particulars of his life elsewhere which way interest lovers of art, and the genera! public, in view of the approaching exhibition of paintings be longing to the Laval Universitytr ere A TIMELY WARNING.Commiesionse Whipple, of the State of New York, has resemtly issued a ciroular letter to all the supervisors in the forest pressrve districts to take extra precaution for the prevention of forest fires at this particular season of the vear.Ha save that the next forty- five days will be the most dangerous time of the year for fires, and every person going into the woods should he warned about starting or leaving tires.A little special attention on the part nf mach supervisor, patrolman, and game protector, he adds, will save gon't Vough | It's Dangerous ! ‘“Fatiser Morrisoy®s No.10” will step the Cough and Cure the Cold Are you ome of those who say, ''O, it's only s little cold’’, and let the cough lang on, doing nething for it?1{ you are, just thisk à minute. It is true that most colds, if left to tiremsalves, will leave you after a while -but they leave you with the delicate lining of throat qui lun Jeskened — sn easy prey fo the mext cold.per celà makes it basler te catch the next one, and harder to got rid of it, and it doesn't take many such colds to give you Catarrh or some serious lung trouble.“Mather Morriscy's No.10" —Cough Cure and Lung Tonic—is « 1 of nd ep) on revent , It promptly clesse Er the mucus, removes the irritation and inflammation that causes the congh- tue and heals sud etrengthens lelicate membranes, Beekles, it tones up the whole systers and gives you strength te resist the next a .kr Trent drag, Re es cian hate Co.Ltée .acough sscoughing.Stopit! Escape from Death in Storm.St.Jobn's, Nfld., Sept.22—A tale of suffering and cunger were related to-day by the crew of a boat which loft the new Canadian icebreaker Earl Grey to attempt to obtain coal and provisions on the bleak Newfoundland coast when the vessel's supply was nearly exhausted.A number of tle crew manned a boat and rowed fifteen miles to Bay de Verde, where they abtained 24 tons of coal in sacks and some provisions, and after tele- fraphing to St.John's a report of their vessel's plight, they started lo return.Meanwhile g severe storm had arinen and the seas became so high that the boat was nearly swamped. Finally it became ‘necessary for the men to jettison the ooal to escn foundering. The mast and sail of t boat next went by the board. The men were adrift all night and at daylight were picked up by a parsing schooner. In boarding the schooner one of the seamen was badly crushed, while another had his arm broken, The men were landed at Carbonear, whence they were conveyed bers.Tugs were sent out from this city and brought in the disabled steamer Sunday night.| J ALLAN LINE.RM.8.Virginian, Captain Vipond, from Liverpool, with passengers, mails and general ascertained, and up to the present over 34,000 separate estates have been discovered. It is expected that another three or four thousand will be added before the work is complete.gigentic map is made in nec- tions of 25 inches ordnance sheets, the whole wark requiring 110 sections. When it is finished and laid out, with its sections in order, the map will be more than 30 fest wide and 20 fest trom
