Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

wbére a zeries of annual breaks in the ! pipes supplying water was regarded as part of the normal conditions of civic | existence.Other places would have , concluded long ago that such a state * of things involved too great a risk to the public health, the public life, and the publie property, and would have supplemented their deective water sys- teh, with ons on which more dependence could be placed. They would not be deterred by the cost, even if they were forced to retrench in other direc.ant ta the well-being of a city than the reasonably assured regular cor tinuance of the water supply, and there is nothing so little assured in Quebec. With an orderly population, with an efficient police protection, with our thoroughfares the admiration of visitors for tbe manner in which thev are kept, with efficient sanitary regniations, with first class men and appliances for fire-fighting.we are exposed every year to the dangers and annoyances of a defective water mp ply.and this, as we have said, not the fault of the water works officials, but of City Council after City Council that has had thus pressing prob lem before its eyes without the cour age to attempt a solution of it.GOD BLESS THE PRINCE OF WALES.Tr-day we hope to welcome ta our chores His Most Gracious Majesty Edward VII.in the person of his repre sentative and heig apparent, the Prince i of Wales, and while we all regret, ms we are nure His Majenty himself ve grote, that State duties have prevent el the Ring from gracing our festiv.itien with his presence, and from re newing the acquaintances which he himself when heir apparent to the throne formed here, our welcome to bis ann ie none the less hearty and spontaneous, for his own sake as well as for the sake of the august personage he represents, for His Royal Highness is no stranger to Canadians; but an old and valued friend whose grorth snd estimable qualities made them.' selves recognized on a previous visit.To-day His Royal Highness repre sents not the King only, but the Em: pire of which he in the head, and which has grown up and prospered under the wire and far-sesing pol cy which has rightly earned for him the proud xitle of Edward the Peacemaker. In the Prince, so well known to us for his | appreciative sympathy with Canads | and the Canadiana, we see the Empire which is being built up slowly and | carefully to an extent greater than that of Imperial Rome, and on lines ef fresdom of which Rome never dream: led, assisting nt our fetes, identifying itsell with our sentiments and aepira- tions, and making common cause with one of its members in ite refolcings. This lends a weight and dignity all ita own to our celebration, and is a source of legitimate pride, but we «6 more than this.We eee in the Prince of , Wales the representative of a Royal , Houve that han abgays heen intimate ly amsncisted with Canada, fram the , Dnke of Kegt, lather of our late he.loved Queen Victoria, to the present day ; & House that has always taken Canadas to te heart, and worked thoughtfully for her best intsrests | and finally, as we have eaid, we ses QUEBEO; OH RONIOLB:) » LT a = = .ra and NPR scH-MUM Champagnesare dn daily use in all the principal ROYAL 1AL COURTS of EUROPE.anMUMMacs Forall banquets, dinners and other entertainments, during the Tercéntenary Celebration, use Maco THE CHINIC HARDWARE (A.St.Petar Stroet, Lower Towa Branch, Fabrique St., Upper Towa SPORTING GOODS Trout and Salmon including the resows.re EXTRA DRY — Is the most exquisite Dry Champagne Imported Flies, Reels, Lines, Baits .- Fe Barnes er WEY enMUMM sc0 JE SELECTED is à grand Brut Wine of unequalled style and quality.een granted to Messrs.Royal Warrants have G.H.Mumm and Co.by His Majesty King Edward VII * His Majesty The German Emperor esty The Emporor of Austria His Majesty The King of Italy His Majesty The King of Sweden His Majesty The King o His Majesty The King of Belgium > His Majesty The King o S.B.TOWNSEND & CO, Montreal, Sole Agent for Canada.I.General and Hsavy Hardware flor Season Reductions.BRUT f Denmark f Spain glad to welcome back amongst us and to look upon once more. All these things are typefied to us in the triple ostrich feather of his crest, and the motto which his House has so faith fully put into practice towards us, “Ich dien, I serve.” Yes ! Transcontinental Bail way will cost in the neighborhood of two hundred and fifty milliens of del.lars in cash, but ail the country will bave to pay will be the interest charges, amountiag to some thirty- eight millions, according to the pres ent entimate. The balance ie à matter of bonkkeeping. The moment the Minister of Finsnes admitted the corçectness of the figures an atated by Mr.Borden, he gave away the whole case for the Government, It does not make the slightest difference to the taxpayer how the items are buried or disguised. There is the cost, and it has to be paid, and whether principal or inter ja him am ‘old friend whom wo ere «ot, there is only ons way te pay ih Tke money will come out of the Dowinion treasury direct, or it will come out of the pockets of the people in the shape of transportation charges, The reault is just the same in any event, and every dollar that in expended will add its burden to the taxation of the people. The Government supporters ohject to adding in the cost of the Quebec bridge. This is simply another case of juggling. There is from twelve to fourteen million dollars to pay for that bridge. The cost is not made any teas by keeping it in a separate account. The structure ia intended as a part of the National Transcontinental. It is ns necessary a portion of the road az the piece between Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, and the expenditure in connection with it has to be borne by the public in just the same way, no matter how the books are kept. There is a surprising lack of freshness in the attitude of the Government in desling with this railway project. The Ministers are forced to admit that they deceived the electors in their original estimate and they are evidently determined to keep up that deception as long as they can.Information which ought te be before Parliament has been withheld, and the teport of the commissi who have the construction of the endtern section in hand, is a model of meagreness. For ail the real information it aflords, the country .might well have been saved the cost of its production. The facl of the matter Is that the Government Is not at all anxious to take the country into its confidence in the question of the cost of the new railway.nd the reel truth as to the will not be known until there Fa change + administration after the ur lection.— Winnipeg Teale—
