Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

conclude that itx remarks on the pre- |xent situation in this port are intend- ad to be taken in a friendly spirit, as they certainly are just and well found- wd, Our confrere says: — “ln former times, when the port of Quebee had a flourishing shipping tinde, the ‘longshoremen destroyed it by their exactions and, when the trade | was ruined, they disapprared, but the prier to give Quebec the go by.and wake Three Rivers their terminal.With that object in view ample dock facilities have heen secure nnd the 'long- «horemen will have to chouse between lowering their demands or losing the trade.Fientually, there can be no doubt, the Empress steamships will to come tu Montreal, but that cannot be Seifert’s Silver Cream For cleaning and polishing Gold, Silver, Plated eventually Lo Montteal, whether they remain here for the present or go to Three Rivers.That will depend, ax the Witness peinte out, largely on the harbor accomodations and shipping facilities, and also, in sume measure on the further enlarge nent of the ship-channel, and before these two thinge can be realized for Montreal it in not impossible that the C.P.R.may have entablished its footing so securely either here or at Three Rivers as to render it hardly worth while to change ite base.If jt goea to Three Rivers now it is toler.ubly certain to have all things ite own way.and to provide its own facilities thoroughly to its own satisfaction: but if it remains here, there will be a necessity tu equip the port, not only for the tral- fic of the Emprosses, hut also for that tof other lines, which may be reason- | aby hoped to follow the example set “by them.Our confrero argues that the | permanent establishment of the C.P.R.line of ateamers depends on the traffic necomudations, and any port that desiren their’ presence must be prepared to-furnish them with suitable { conveniences.Herr is where the pro- vrastination of the ‘longshorsmen in acting injurionaly.It is acknowledged by ail that the port ie at present only a third-rate one as regards tral fie facilities, that these must be increased if we desire to increase the trade, and that no time should bn lost in doing so, but until we know whether the Enipresses are going to an at Quebec, or will remove to ree Rivers, it in useless to further agitate for improved tern inal facilities, and the decision depesds on the ‘longshotemen.If their décipion in adverse the terminal facilities wa havo now will be sufficient, or vearly so, for all the demands :hat are likely to he made upon them.~and wr *pecially appointed by Pitt and the Ring, who had cvery confidence jn him.Randers’ fleet consisted of 22 battleships, 5 frigates and 17 sloop»- oi-war, or a total of | X86 guna, which, of course, were of the smooth that one-third of the charge used was all that was necessary to get the bent results.The ammunition used was the spherical shot, the carchue shell, and grape-mhot.They also had very heavy mortars, ten and thirteen inches in diameter, the latter weighing up to i two hundred pounds.and it was said (that with them accurate shooting i could be done up to two or two and ia half miles.I Admira] Sanders left Louisburg on dune 7, and the fleet came up to the ‘Huot of’ the Traverse without any acei- dent.Prior to this the general impres- | sion was that it was impossible for any une who had na knowledge of the river to come up the St, Lawrence 10 Queber.There were no lighthousen, no buoys, and &brolutely no landmarks.Whatever there had been in the nature of guides had been destroyed by the French on learning that the English were coming.Hut James Cook." the famous cireawm-navigator.did the scouting up the river, with the aid of two maps that had been taken from two captured French merchantmen and he succeeded.well.The artillery of the French, Lieut.Col.Pelletier contended.wan much inferior to that of the British.Mon talm wae in a very awkward position because although he was in comman of the troops he had to submit all his plan: to Vaudreuil.the Governori They did not understand each other 4 very well and it only required one to suggest something for the other to vbjert to it.This, ax might be expected, in some cases militated against the French during the operations.~Wolle's first camp was established on the far side of Montmorency Falla, but after some skirmishes, lie made up his mind to have a eral en gagoment, and he did it very cleverly, Admiral Sanders allowed hin whip, the Centurion, to ground near the dohnson redoubt, and some other ships were also allowed to ground in the same neighborhood.The other ships were kept moving wp and down, and ro prevented Montcalm comin to any definite decision, as he did not know where (hey were yoing to land.Finally.they made for Beauport Flats, But Wolfe withdrew his troops, an he saw that it wan pretty well impossible to storm the works there, and he formed a new plan, When the landing at Gilmour's Hilt was made 1,500 men were on top of the cliff hy aix o'clock in the morning, and they had got there entirely unopposed.After describing the positions taken up by the troope and the most sirik.ing features of the battle, Colonel { Pelletier concluded hy quoting Colonel Woods.It was a most complete vie tory, but a moat glorious defeat.The chair at the meeting wax ocen- ied by > Lt.-Col.McKay, and a Party vote of thanka | the iecturer on the motion of Colonel | Contigan.;
