Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

ern QUEBEC, JUNE 14, 1007.GENERAL BOOTH.~~ Osly à few days ago Quebec was called on to do honor to the repre sentative of a powerful and friendly people, which had recently vindicated its right to enter into the comity of sivilized peoples by force of arme ; to- dey she is called on to do honor to the representative of another Empire, the Empire of Love, whose founds- tions are the message ‘Peace on Earth, and gond will towards men.” Those who can recall the early days of the Salvation Army, wbea tbe venerable and illustrious philanthropiet whom we welcomes to-day originated it, and remember the ridicule with which it was at first received, the obloguy hesped up on it, and the perseoutions which it incurred, may well he astonished at the marvelious success it has achieved, and the great power it has become for alleviating the woes of suffering humanity. This it owes, under Providence, to the broad and Catholic spirit which ignored sects, the unshaken faith, and the unwavering energy of its founder, and to him has been | given the love and admiration of the world, and the blessing rarely bestowed, ‘He shall see the fruit of his labor "and be satisfied.” re THE PALACE HILL QUESTION.The action of the Roads Committee on Wednesday evening in deciding to ! recommend the adoption of the alter native plan of extending the electric )car service through St.Sauveur in : preference to that of double-tracking Palace Hill is a wise one.In the first piace the street is not suitable for a double track ; it differs entirely from St.John street in the steepness of its grade, and the nature of its traffic ; where an accident from a restive horse | might easily be averted on St.John | street it would be dificult to do so | on Palace Hill under easily conceivable circumstances, if double-tracked : the | traffic up the hill is in great measure composed of heavily weighted lumber | and coal carts, and the strain on the horses entailed by stopping ball way up the incline and then starting is one which no humane person wduld il be doesn't tell you to uss .os aie Ee A RET TR TE be willing to impose on the animals except under very pressing necessity. This necessity does not exist. So far as rapid communication is concerned, there is nothing to prevent the cars on the Palace Hill seetion from returning immediately ; the trouble does not lie with the connecting link but with the Upper and Lower Town services which occasion all the delay. Moreover the laying of a double track would necessitate the tearing up of the street and the temporary blocking of the traffic on it, and, if the proceedings of the Road Committee are to be our guide, there is quite enough in the way of “improving” the streets contemplated elsewhere, to absorb all the energy o1 the Koad Committee, and the money of the rate payers, without adding to the list; more especially Las ‘the double tradking is likely to be expensive to the city, and involves, according to Mayor Garnesu, the re moval of the sidewalk opposite the Hotel Dieu, and, according to Alderman Galipeault, the expropriation of certain properties. The extension of the line through St.Sauveur to St.Malo is not ex to similar criticism. The double track- img of ‘Palace Hill is à piece of ex- travagauce, and utterly uncalled for if the Electric Car Company were com- polled to do their duty and provide a regular five minute service aloug tt.John and St.Paul streeta-it is por fectly absurd to talk of rapid communication by running cars up and down the treetls work il there are no cars awaiting the passengers of Bt.John and St.Paul streets. The extension to St.Malo, on the other hand, would be a boon to the resi dents there, and of ultimate benefit to the city itsell as tending to promote the extension of ita limits in due time. The Company is bound by its contract to run through St.Sauveur, and should be made to do it; it would not be long before it would find it to ita interest tc go further. At any rate there is no necessity for it to be ul- lowed to do a thing which if called for at all, is only callgl for by the elsewhere.rn me ame LIBERAL SOAP-BUBBLES- As a result of the Provost-Aseelin Mr.Turgeon and his role in the play with its compatriot of Fabrique street, and scousing Senator Landry of hev- it was guarded by the limiting adjective *‘personal’’ but we suppose that in its present straits the Government party dass well to be thankful for small mercies, and to make the best of further that he was directly mixed up with Hon.Mr.Pre six out of the twelve jurymen did not take the same view that Judge Bouse As for Senator Landry's alleged col- | respectively.loguing with Baron diminished by the political opinions of the parties engaged in bringing forward.Senator Landry, Conservatives did nothing immoral or unfair, if, as is alleged, they assisted in having a very serious charge against a goveramental department probed to the bottom; in fact it was the duty of the Opposition to do so; and to reprobate such action is simply “playing to the gallery,” drawing a red herring across the trail, and endeavoring to escape the considera: tion of {acts by appealing to political passions and prejudices, and making an issus between Liberals and Cona governmental department, the administration which draws from the bead the admission that of nearly three thousand applications entered he was only cognizant of one simple instance, and from the inferior offers the complaint that they are over worked and cannot satisfactorily ut- tend to their duties, is mot a party question but a provincial one: it is the concern of ever§ honest man who desires good and effective government, and the proof of this is that the charge against the Government was brought by a Liberal in a journal presumed to advoonte the views of that section of the Liberal party which still retains ita honesty, and is opposed to grafting methods, and wants clean hands.Ji this were the firat instance of its kind, the diatribes of Le Soleil against Senator Landry and ths Conservative party might wear some appearance of plausibility, though even then they side issue for the main one, but it is aot.Mr.Parent, who succeeded Mr.Mar chand, had not been in office long when an attack was campaign against tbe continuance of Mr.Parent in office wes commencer.Three of his colleagues— Messrs.Gouin, Turgeon, and Weir, resigned.Nr.Parent endeavored to patch up his Cabinet, but without the Westminster Gazsite, the récords of the Grand National ought to remove his ticism.Nearly 70 years ago—in 1638 thin race was won by Lottery, a wonderful horse in hia day, in 7 seconds under 15 minutes.Nearly 13 minutes wes the average time until 1844, when Curcall won in 10 minutes 47 seconds. In the “sixties” and ‘‘scventies”’ there was a marked improvement in speed, although the average duration of the race was about 11 minutes; up to 1500 the time never fell below 10 minutes, and often exceeded 11 minutes; but since that year the time has seldom been outside 10 minutes. In 3993 Cloister simply romped in, winning by 40 lengths in a canter in © minutes, 42 2-5 neconds, although he carried the extraordinary weight of 12 stone 7 pounds; and six years later Manifesto ualled Cloister's record by carrying 3 1-2 stones to victory.us, with in 85 years the duration of this race was reduced by well over 5 minutes; so that Cloister ought to have been able to give s start of a mile and a half and have beaten Lottery over the Grand National course.Philanelphia, Jupe 13.—An athletic meet was held last werk by inmates of the Overbrook School for the racing authorities did not comply with the demands of the illers the late ter went out on strike. At Narrandera the ringmen, however, ‘‘pooled” the business, and paid the fee for one bookmaker, who did all the betting, with profitable results. The conditions under which permission would be granted to bookmakers intending to ply their vocation at Goulburn had been duly advertised, and upwards of half a score ringmen from the metropolis to the terms and paid the fee and deposit demanded by the club, but on the arrival of J.|the Riverina contingent an effort was made to get the fee reduced to one- half. The club declined to accede to the request, and a strike resulted.* The club officials remained firm, and was no open betting in the grand stand enclosure during the brisk business over the dividing fence. That evening a conference of ringmen and the honorary treasurer of the club, Mr, C.M." Shaw, was held, with the result that an amicable arrangement was arrived at, and the strike was declared “off.” The “strike,” however, served to um- press on the members of the club and racing men ally the necessity for the legalization of the
