the recent Prevost- Asselin trial in Quebec.I also saw in Le Canada, a notice to the effect that Mr.P.8.G.Mc- Kenzie was not the Mr.McKenzie who ve evidence in that case, and that | P.8.G.McKenzie did Such is identically what you could have sen in Paris before this reformed measure went into operation, Technically having no bodies for sale, yet the object of the city in displaying them was to get rid of them.Parisians are a busy people: also, care-free.Many would not bother to go inside the morgue to inspect the remains, as is done in American cities, So the city went to meet them—placed the corpses in the window so that he who ran might ise.Not this a one; a nil more unusual ste was taken to aid gpassershy in detecting their deccased friends if they should chance to be in the morgue.Often a person doesn't look at all like he did in life. Why?Because the / usual unnatural sition robs him of what in life his friends re- cogaized.f seen as he used to ait in his armor with his head resting in his hand, he would be i easily. So sensational Paris, through its morgue people, took to fixing up the houses of clay in lifelike positions in the great show window ing the street.People hurrying past could not help giving ‘& passing glance, and meny and many a time that glance was followed by a startled exclama- tio, then a definite identification. As a general thing, however, the corpses were displayed on a slab of black marble, under glass cases. The clothing found on the body was hung y, as an aid to identification.Even this grussome i attracted large numbers of the curious. The morgue is on the banks of the Seine, at one approach to the bridge St.Louis—quite appropriate, since mort of the unidentified dead which feed it come from the river, and a large Fercen of them plunge from that self-same bridge.Directly across from the quaint, but not inartistic, one-storey building, is the famous Notre Dame within easy view, is the Hotel Ville.Watercraft of every description up and down past the morgue tinually.Every now and then one of them, stops to pick up from the water's surface a bedraggled unfortunate; for in France the Seino is the river of suicides, Reconstructed in 1864, the morgue replaces the original one in the form of a Greek tomb which was first built in virtues of a police dict under the First Republic. However, something of the kind was known long before that, and as far back as the seventeenth century in France it has been customary ta lace on view the bodies of unidentis ied dead. The main part of the morgue in supplemented by two wings, and with slabs of black marble in two lines for the reception of bodies.A French novelist of the “horrible” school, M.Jules Janin, wrote a book several years ago, in which he pistur- ed the keeper of the morgue as havin his residence within those diema walls, and even depicted the koeper as giving an evening party to hin friends in a room joining that sepulchral chamber, According to the matistical tables, more men than women find their way to the Paris morgue. For instance, of those victims under the age of 25, during a period of years, the number of males was 515 and of females 115.Between the ages of 25 and 45, of 1,242 occupants, 1,050 were men nnd 192 women. From 45 to 85 there were 593 men and 58 women.Out of 1,745 violent deaths reported in a given time, 1,414 were by drowning, 114 by hanging, 98 by firearms, 46 ‘through the fumes of charcoal, 86 through falls from heights, 8 from sharp weapons, 11 by poison, 7 by being thet we advocated in a recent issue of this column should be adopted in the permanent corps. We contond that every man belonging to these instructional depots should be an instructor, but | until some inducements are hekl out in the way of increased puy for those that obtain the necessury qualifications we cannot expect the permunent corps ta sucoesefully carry out the work with which #t is manufacturers or the general public as much as it should be.Without the moisture evaporated from the water in the pan, the hot air distributed throughout the house is dry and dusty.Cracks and opens up the furniture—is not fit to breathe into the lungs.Yet, mind you, some furnace makers place this important water-pan where there is often not enough heat to evaporate the water.Put it out of sight in an awkward position at the side or back, where it cannot readily be filled without being removed—and when filled it would take a juggler to replace it without spilling a big share over himself.THE EASY SUNSHINE METHOD It is placed right in the path of the hot air as it circulates around the dome of the furnace. Its impossible for any heated air to pass out of the registers before extracting its due share of moisture from the water-pan.That-means you breathe healthful, clarified air, free from an instructor at the headquarters of every undron, battery and company, asmsting the officers to get their commands into shape for the coming eamp, but if instructors were appli | for, ike application would likely be met with the reply : No instructors available, only four are Erindale proved a success, and wert far to illustrate how essential it is that divisions and brigades, from 060 end of Canada to the other, should he organized, and put through similar tests in issuing orders and carrying them out.Every one knows that the permanent force and many ‘city’ regiments, are well trained, but their indivi training is not sufficient unless their organization, mobilization and efficient handling, as well aa that of the rural force, is as in time of , then one might feel that only the signal to is needed. The garrison of Quebec has not Lad a tactical exercise thir year and us we will have the fleet here in a few days why not embrace the opportunity of giving the corps of this garrison, both permanent and volunteer, a rattling good lesson in field work. There is no doubt the fleet would enter heartily into the scheme and with an officient staff to draw up and superintend a tactical iden, greet benefit would be derived by all ranks. If it is not possible to carry out the work by day thon we could bave a night attack, the permanent force tak- ling the furthest out positions to «which they might move in the after noon and the Caval:v,
