Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

who is it that provides {his mysterious campaign fund, of which we hear so much and know so little? The answer is to be found in what.we have formerly said; the provider is the Governsaent through the different departments, and the Government is the one to be de nounced, and the culprit to be punish.od.It may be difficult to obtain proofs of this assertion, but nevertheless the proofs are not altogether wanting and one may be found in the experience of à crtain Toronto firm which after furnishing some supplies to the Government sent in its bill and received a cheque from the department for the amount plus some eighty dollars which it was requested to turn ‘modus ojerandi is plain enough, and ithe source of the money for corrupt purpasce is clearly revealed, and we think that no one will be rash enough to assert that this is a unique and solitary exception, or foolish enough to expect that people will believe it if he does assert it.It is the govern; ment, therefore, that provides ths | money for the purchase of volers, and | that does it by means of rake-ofls on the sums with which it allows its lol- lowers to enrich themselves.Herein lies the secret of the ex- | travagance of the Government and (he enormous sums that are paid out with, apparently, no adequate return. There is an adequate return, otherwise the Government instead ef being simply unxcrupulous, would be also incom- (petent and unbusiness-like, but the return is not made to the people, but over to the government election agents | in a contest then pending. Here the | In Parlinascet- the.Minister scemod to make light of the whole matte The Liberal member for Vancouver jpolomnly declared that there was nbth- ing wrong and that the cost of provisioning the ship wes quite reasonable. But another session is approaching with further investigations in view and the Minister of Marine has found Ît nccebsary to take some action. Now the official report is given out that Mr.Brodeur has held an investigation and that the captain of the Kestral hog been suspended. It this is eo, it is all on account of the disclosure made by Mr.Poste.The bills came to the Department months before Mr.Foster saw them.Departmental officers saw nothipg the matter or if they did, they did uot lventure to tell the Minister so.The | Minister brimeelf was satisfied and the "bills were audited and paid just as many other bills for two or three tinws the value of the goods, have been regularly passed and paid by the Department of Marine and other de partments. The captain of the Kestrel was suspended, but—the bille were paid.Docs anybody believe that the supplies pretended to be fumished were so in reality, or that the prices pretended to have been paid were the market prices?Does anybody belicved that any ship- master would take in a stock of pro visions sglculated to supply each member on board with a can of fruit a day for tem months, or a hundred dozen ol egge during the ‘same period, calculating the price of eggs at 20 cents à dosen, which is a tolerably high price for such a wholesale transaction. The case of the Kestrel is very similar to that of the Arctic; the samv alleged exuberance of supply, the same dispropociionate expenditure of money; the same doubt as to the actual existence of what was asserted to be paid for, and the same unhrsit- ating payment of the bills. And it is safe to- say that though the captain of the Kestrel was made the soape- gont, as soon as it was discovered that & scape-gpat was imperatively nicessary, the department got its little Fres ov 10 1798, Gatarrh Cure Bad Breath, K' Hawking and Spitting Quickly Clired—Fill Out Free Couponas wel as other water Pier that waa there up winter at the end of the long The position of the pier at t of the Cap Rouge ver is a» .fore shown by a fiat buoy a white ligiit by night, a tion of the deep water Pier takén at the end of the Long is in a straight line with the flat buoy an west.Cap Ro Wharf and Pier Cop Rouge Wha! od foe apl.FTxt.f.Manager.MISS O’NEILL on View, “My New Discovery Quickly Cures Catar h.‘’ C.D.Gauss.Catarrh is not only dangerous, but | it causes bad breath, ulceration, death | and decay of bones, loss of thinving and decay of bones, loss of thinking and energy, often causes loss of appetite, indigestion, dyspepsia, raw | throat aml reaches to ral debility, idiocy apd insanity. It needs attention at once.Cure it ‘with Gauss’ Ca- {arrh Cure.It is a quick, radical, permanent cure, because it rids the system of the poison germs that cause catarrh. In ovder to prove to all who suffering from this dangerous loathsome diseasa that Gauss’ Catarrh ‘ Cure will actually cure any case of catarrh quickly, no matter how long standing or how bad, I will send a trial package by mail free of all cost.Rend us your name and address today and the treatment will be sent you by return mail, duty free.Try it! protection boat, a little craft of {hrev hundred tons with a complement of twenty-two men all told, officers and crew. She was in commission ten monthe ducing the fiscal year 1908.It will cause some amazement to shipping people to know that the country paid $7.500 to provision the party for that time.Thé figures work out to more than $34 a month for {each person on board the ship, or at feast for cach person who had business on hoard the ship. This is a pretty heavy bill for raw material, fur it must be remembered that $34 was not the price of board and lodging in "a hotel, but the cost of uncooked provisions taken on hoard a boat which was provided with cooks and stewards. The items cannot all be given hers but they are quite interesting. For {instance the fruit nill was 654.00 for i the season for each man on the ship.As the canned peaches and pears wers bought by the case it would appear that the Kustrel's crew was served with about one can a day per man.The bill for eggs is also a little extraordinary. From one dealer there was bought $9.90 worth for each of the crew.Another supplied $3.80 worth, another $3.00, another ono $1.50 and a fourth $1.00.There were other purchases amounting to seven or vight dozen egge per man.The hills indicate that cach member of the crew got away with $0.00 worth ol eggs during the season, There was a similarly large consumption of honey, oynters, cream, poultry, esparagus, creamery butter, sauces, and other things. The provision bill exceeded the wages bill, which fact might justify the statement that the men ate more than they were worth if it were aup- posed that these goods were really bought and used for the purpose charged. But no reasonable person believes that the crew of the Kestrol Young Men Wanted For Flesmon and of them get over the feeling pretty soon, and a week or two ia the Maine woods or the Laurentian mountains is enough to make them want to get back to the city. But there are some souls who are so powerfully impressed with the attractions of the “simple life’ that they form colonies and try to carry out in their own lives what to most people © a fanciful dream. But getting back to nature is not so easy, nor is the end so pleasant as they had pictured. Not a few times in the past century or so have these colonies been founded, in which plain living end high thinking were to go hand in hand.Probably the most notable was “Brook Farm,” which included some of the choicest spirits every gathered in such an un- dertnking.Uptom, Sinclair, whose book, “The Jungle,” brought about a revolution in the meat-packing industry, hap just founded a socialistic colony in New Jersey; but the enter prise is just now beginning, end it will take time to judge of its wucoess or failure.Reports from the colony of Germans founded on the lsiand of Kabokom are not encouraging to those who hope for the success of such an undertaking.A number of German authors, painters and philosophers settled there in ali the harmony of enthusiastic brother hood. These ‘“‘sun brothers” planned to start life afresh, to live as lived primeval man when the world was new, not long after creation’s dawn.By living mostly on fruite and nuts and spending their time in tilling the land they hoped to bring back to earth again the good old days when Adam and Eve dwelt in innoocnee and happiness in the Garden ol Eden. But tho dream was too bright to laa, One philosopher, Professor Englehardt, died because he was too thinly clad to bear the rigor of the weather. An other philosopher, Herr Reitmann, was murdered by the natives. The other members of the colony found such trouble and discomforts as they had never known before. They are now re turning te civilisation, thoroughly satisfied that primeval man hed trouble enough to send him to an early grave.Which leads to the conclusion thet the ‘’wifaple life,” after all, bears a very close rescmblance to the “strenuous life.” FXCHEQUER COURT.The Exchequer Court will hold cial siti org {follows : Quebec, Jem 10; St, John, N.B., Jun.18; Holifax, Jan.18, Lo Montreal Steel
