something that will cause you to have fits, and I oan , cure them,” and in line with this story he thought that oftengimes the doctors who attended the Jeffery Hale Hospital thought they saw a way of cure, in order to prevent the removal a poor sufferer, and keep them in the hospital longer.God in his love and mercy, had put it into the heart of one of his servants to fil this void, and when ti looked around and observed this hospital, they should thank Him with fervent reverence for the Mackenzie memorial that will he held as a monument of the donor's goodness for generations. The Governors, introduced Mr.John Hamilton, and requested him to address the assemblage.Mr.Hamilton said the President, with his usual modesty, effaocd himself, but inasmuch ax one of its governors had to spask, he would say a few words. He reminded the ladios and gentlemen present that he represented the annual subscribers on the board, and as he war elected annuslly he was a free lance; and they could re place him whenever they desired. However, he would speak plainly, and talk of the financial condition of the lros- pital, and tell them what he had already stated on previous occasions, though to year previous $1,000, therefore it should u t be seen that it neec’s some support. He referred to the contagious branch of the hospital that was isolated from the main buildings, and proceeded to state that the present contributions were not sufficient to meet the de mands, especially if there should be an outbreak of contigious disease that pital was established for Protestant citizens of Quebec, but they could not be ro small as not to admit others in need of help, The rules were stringent and should be obeyed, but it was dif.fienlt to refuse those making application for relief, and he was not going to apologize for no doing. He was broad in his views, and they should not absolutely refuse. They never, how- sver, admitted an outsider to the exclusion of a Protestant, and took the aution that there was always a Be at the disposal of Protestants. He referred to certain talk and mie tions in regard to the hospital that had gone abroad which had no foundation of fact.On two GERMANY Come Over That Country, p—— Among the many features which give expression to the fact that & new and quite modern Germany bas taken the place of the old, must be mentioned the extroordinary and rapid change which has come over wporting life in that country.this we do not refer particularly and espucislly to horse racing, but rater to the national and social regard for that proper excrcie oi the body which is of such vital in portance, This duty was in & great measure neglected by the Germans une til somewhere shout the year 1870, The intellectual training then stood incomparably higher than the physical. Many and various ars the causes which have contributed to bringing about « change—laok of tradition, à certain clumsiness, gnd last, but not lonst, the fact that tho pursuit of the majority of sports entailed a certain money outlay, which a country, as yet but little developed from a material point of view, was not in a condition to bear. The only national form of sport was tha “Turnen’ or physical gymnastics, la practice which sprang up during the trying years of the Napoleonic wars, amongst all classes of the community.Since then, German gymnastioe hav» in no way lost ground.for the Cerman Gymnastic Society, to which almost al mnastic clubs in Germany are affiliated, numbered 115.931 members in 1869, and 757,110 in 190%.But during the time that the Gymnastie Socicty has made such general ond ex- | traordinary advance, sport in all its forms has been introduced, and mede rapid and continuous progress, both in extent and in the enthusiasm with which it is pursued.Tt will soon be no exaggeration to call lawn-tannis —a game which has won such great popularity —the German national game, since tho International Tournament at Hamburg has grown to bo one of the most important events in the lawn: tennis world.Football and golf, and especially polo, are much played in Hamburg.Hero are some interesting figures in connection with the great development of German athletics. In 1808 the total number of athletic or gunizations of sll kinds was twenty; in 1904 this had grown to fifty-five, and no fewer than 271 clubs were af- filinted to these central organ:astions.Five of these bore an international character, and ten were purely mna- tional.A glimpse of a similar quick development is afforded us by the interesting statistics relating to German rowing. If we take the vear 1890 as our starting point, we find that at that {imo there were 13 rowing club regattas in the whole of Germany, and that thess had arranged 150 races, for which 48 hoats entered. In 1905 the numher of regattas had reached 20, the number of races had risen to 2, and no fewer than 1,332 boats entered for them. The fact that in 1905, 4,653 supporters of the manly sport of rowing, were in a position to come forward as competitors in the races ves to ‘what a pitch the enthusiasm oe this water-sport has risen in Germany.Frankfort (Main) shows the rreatest number of races (22), thon follow Hamburg with 21, Wurzburg with 20, Berlin and Mayence with 18 each.Schoolboys have also bren more and more accustomed to sport during the past decade, although in Germany, the preponderance of physical over mental training is sharply criticized on account of the principles involved, Of course a preponderance there can, however, he no question at present, but in Berlin, for instance, the rowing of the hoy of the higher colleges and schools is organized in a sports manlike fashion, and the Berlin Classical and Modern Secondary Schools have an annual prisoners.contest for the Bismarck Shield. In a word, physical exercises arc on the in crease all over Germany.CANADIAN' FOOTBALL GUIDE.This month's issue of Spalding'e the project others will doubtless fall into line.It is a welllmown fact that much the same state of affairs with regard to amateurism has existed in I senior hockey circles as existed formerly in lacrosse, and it is partly with the object of duing away wit bogus amateurs and making them out- and-out pro essionals that the move is boing made.Gardner, who played professional hockey with Calumet loat year, is in Montreal at the present time, and if the movement goes through he will remain here.Nicholson, Liffiton, Pitre, Laviolette, and Strike, cach of whom is playing professional hockey in the United States, have also sognified their willingness to return.to Montreal.A prominent member of one of the local E.C.H.A.clubs said this morning that if & professional league were for a new rink would be erected by the clube themeclves, as the percentage of the gates i the present quarters would hardly leave sufficient surplus to pay suitable salaries.Another interesting rumor gathered from the same source is that there will not be a Wanderer team ihie year unless a new body of players is we cured. It is stated that the men of last year are not at all satisfied with the treatment received from the management and will desert in a body to the Montreal Club. However, it is unlikely that the backers of the champions will allow the franchise and the big cup to slip away without a big Hort being made to place a winning seven on the ice.REFEREE SILER SUES.Chicago, I, Sept.M.—George Siler, the referee in the recent fight between Joo Gans and Battling Nelson, has filed suit in the League, performed the feat the other day of executing & triple play unassisted, a freat deal of interest has been manifested in the ques tion as to whether a triple play was ever before made by one man.Claims have been made before that the play had been made unsasisted, but in every case doubt has ben thrown on the performance, There seems to be no doubt about Murch’s play.It was made against tha New Brdford team.Drohan and Coveney both singled, the former being held at second on Coveney's hit. Then Kavanagh, a left-handed hitter, came to bat and drove a liner close to the ground, directly toward Murch.Murch put down his hand, and the ball atuck n his mitt.He then touched the bag, Putting out Covency, and as Drohan ad circled around past third base, Murch trotted to second and touched the bag, completing the triple play.Schafly, now playing with the Washington Americans, is crodited with a triple Jay unassisted in Portland, and vo ie O'Hagan, a player who was with Jersay City. But neither of these plays scems to have been officially recorded, and the great question of one player putting out threo base-runnors without elp from another fielder was still in the list of unproven events until Murch pulled it off.Tho greatest controversy over the subject was carried on at the time a tripla play was claimed for Paul Hines, of the Providence Greys. In a game with Boston back in the eightica it is claimed that Hines did the trick.According to the story thers were men on second and third bases, and none out, Hines, who plays] ounire field, ran in toward second bass, and caught a pop fly that was too ler out for tho inflelders. The rvaners, thinking the ball would drop safe, started for the noxt stations, and Hinve, with the momentum gained in running for the ball, dashed over second, thus making the double play unassisted.Tho man who had been on third was across the plate by this time, and Hines, continuing to run, beat the man to tho third station. The scorers disagreed on the point as to whether Hines did ell this, some claiming that after making the double play unassist- od.Hines threw to third and completed the triple. There was an scrimonious discussion on this point for years, but aa the scorera could never agree the matter was never definitely settled, and the question of a triple play unassisted is still among the uncertainties.Cook's Cotton Root rather arduous task of making a recommendation on the subject which, in effoct, will be the city’s side of the whole question.Ottawa Enst, Uttawa South and Hintonburg were sone time since consulted and the mat ter wus then referred to a sub-com- mittee consisting of the Mayor, Ald.Boudreault and AM.Putman, to pre pare a recommendation. No sittings were held this summer, but there have been a couple in the past few days and it is intimated that before long the whole committees will be called together to discuss what the sub-com- mities proposes. It fs doubtful if the city would go to the full extent of what somo of the suburbs want. One of the biggest elements in the question is that respecting local improve: ments. At present the city bears nearly one-half of most of such works and 8 great hole is thus eaten into current revenue. With the admission of suburbs the demand for improvements would bo t and, it the present system obtained, the civic revenues would be under a great strain.Whether or not the committee will wake such a recommendation, the suggestion has been made in the discussions that new districts coming into the city should, for some years at least, beur tho entire cost of their improvement works.LORD LEITH OF FYVIE, Romance of Scottish Host of the King of Spain. An enormousiy rich wen is Lord Laith of Fyvie, at whose muyjniticent scat in the north of
