Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

of the coal i Sir Williams Vernon Harjcourk- led with a severe, almost vio lent, arraignment of the Government. He smid the tax would thtow the coal trade into chaos and confusion. It recklessly disregarded existing contracts and was a most unbusinesalike way of dealing with a great trade, It was an extraordinary and vexatious piece of bungling. It was nonsense to say the foreigner woul pay the tax because he could not do without the coal. But the Government of Italy had answered by taking coal from America instead of this country. The trade of France was equally divided be tween this country, Germany and Belsium.‘The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, interrupting, said —"'We are beating the others,” “Then go on beating them.” said Sir William Vernon Tlarcoust.“why throw a shilling into the scale this roundry 1 Sir William contended that it was class Tevislation, and that the tax would ultimately come out of the Miners’ wages. The Chancellor of the Exchequer admitted that the tax, like every other lax, was an obstruction on trade, The real question was, could the export trade in coal bear the tax ?It could.English coal was of so good a quality there was much of it, and it could not be got in anv other country. Thus to a large extent, it was free from competition. The Chancellor submitted masses of statistics, which he summarized as showing that 225,000,000 tons were mined 1800, which, after deducting £18,000, in wages more than in 1897, left the coal owners a net profit of £20,000,000 on a capital of £1001- 000,000.He had some difficulty in keeping his patience when deputations talked to him about the unprofitable condition of trade. He had propesed the tax for merely one year, and it woul be on those who were able to bear it.London, May 2.— As to the com- retition of the United States, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach said :— “Last year the price of our coal at the port of export rase very much higher than the price of coal in the United States, but in spite of that our export of coal was 38,000,000 tons or 3,500,000 tons more than the previous vear. The United States export a Hithe over ©,000,000~10hs.If the United States could not compete when the price of our coal was very high it would be absolutely impossible for them Lo compete wnen the price of our coal was low." Mr.John Redmond, the Nationalist leader said the coal tax did not afirct Ireland and in that respect it was the bezinning of a new era.On general principles, however, he urged _ Iristé members lo do everything possible in their efforts’ to defeat the budget.« The debate was adjourned to Mon dav next, when according to the arrangements, a division will be taken.London, May 2.— Yesterday, Nir.Halfour was determined to ret a vote on the coal tax before the House rose and he rejected Sir Willem Vernon Harcourt's private appeal for a postponement. At a late hour, however, so, many members were anxious to speak that the Speaker gave it to be understood that he would not conuent to an application of the closure. The Government was therefore reluctantly compelled to yield. The prowpect of the miners persisting in r determination to strike appears this morning more doubtful, consideration of 1h3 matter for 24 hours having somewhat modificd the opinions of the leaders, but no reliable indications are yet available.re REPORT DENIED New York, May 2.—Although names were freely mentioned today in _connection with the reported sale of a sat on the stock exchange for $70,000 HONOR.The news nada to serve war, Major d.s.o., an excellent reputation as a zealous and intelligent cavalry officer, devoted ous service in actual warfare, he has fully sustained that character, and comes back to ug with the enviable distinction of the Victoria Cross, and Order, tive city, and the whole Dominion, may be justly proud, that steps will be taken to mark on his arrival here the high estimation in which he is held by his follow citizens, and the hearty welcome with which they receive him back.THE CHAXPION PROJECT.The acquisition of the Leyland Line of steamers by the American Trust King, J.P.Morgan, has excited a great deal of attention in some quarters and evoked but a languid interest in others, according as its significance has been represented.Mr.Glynn, n director of the Leyland Line at Liverpool, divests it of more importance than that which attaches to a some all that Mr.Morgan sought was to obtain sufficient ordinary shares of the Company to give the American syndicate represented by him the right to nominate two directors. The transfer, he explained, concerned the Company's interest in the American, Mexican and West.Indian fleets, and Liverpool would not, at least for a year or two, be affected by the tenor of the shares.According to other mformation, Mr.Morgan's deal with the Leyland Line is of a Jess limited scope, the intention being to secure for the New Orleans traffic of the Illinois Central Railway a cerlain number of ships on which it can depend. This sort of a thing is, ay our readers are well aware by no means a new departure, and a Montreal contemporary points out that several other railwav lines have relations more or Jess close with steamship companies, consisting usually, however, of a simple agreement like that between the Grand Trunk and the Dominion Line for Portland, and that betweeh the Great Northern and Levland Line for Quebec. The Illinois Central management cvidently believe that a stil closer relation would be to their advantage, and to that end they appear to have arranged for the purchase of enough stock to secure control of the line.” This statement is a decided advance on that made by Mr.Glynn, who said that all the Americans sought was the nomination of {wo directors on the Board of the Company, but even this is thrown in the shade by the New York Journal, which announces in sensational head lines that the Atlantic is to be an American lake; that such is the purpose of the new ocean steamship line combine formed by the American Trust King, J.I.Morgan; that the Leyland purchase is the first step of a policy by which the company expecis eventually to control the traffic on two oceans and the Mediterranean, and to get the trade to the Far Fast.1 says that a new giant fleet is ache- duled now, that ten huge steamers, one of them to be fitted with a theatre, will be constructed at the cost of $50,000,000, and that the billion dollar Steel Trust will reach from the Far Fast to Burape hy the purchase of steamship lines, and Its alliance with the railroad combine. The frat step to all this is the purchase of an interest in the Leyland Line of steamers, and the probable control of the Atlantic Transportation Company, eighty-five steamers in all. That something more is on the tapis than the accommodation of the Illinois Central Railroad is evident from the fact that! the Leyland Line had already made a contract with that Company for additional ocean tonnage from New Orleans, by which it was to furnish four steamships a week from that port for Liverpool and other European ports: and some color is given to the sensational’ report of the Journal by the statement that Mr.Morgan is negotiating for the acquisition of 1he- Doinion and Johnson lines, wit how and the contemplated laying of it out into a miniature park, seems to us a fitting occasion for calling the attention of our readers, apd the citizens generally, to the Tund raised by the Chronicle through the medium of a twenty-five cent.subscription for the purpose of erecting a monument to commetnorate the bravery of those who left this city with the different Canadian contingents to serve in the war in South Africa. This fund, amounting (0 between nine and ten hundred dollars, is still lying idle, awaiting a decision as to its disposal, and several suggestions have lately Leen} nrade Lo us considering the narrow limits assigned to the individual subscription, is not large enough for any pretentious affair.Stil) it might be enabled to make à good showing, if supplemented by the city, and would be ample to put up a handsome granite obelisk, after the fashion of Cleopatra's needle, if the city will on its side provide a pedestal of six or eight feet high, with brasses on the four sides containing, first, the names of all the Quebecers who left here, secondly, the death roll, whether from battle or disease, with the place and date of death; third, the list of all the engagements in which the Quebecers took part; and fourth, an in scription narrating (he circumstances under which the monument was erected and containing the thanks of the city of Quebec to her soldiers. Some] such memorial, thus roughly outlined, would perhaps be more suitable by its severe simplicity, to the military character of the comniemoration, than a more pretentious affair; hut as we understand, from conversations with several prominent citizens, that (he general feeling is that something more worthy of the greatness of the city of Quebec should be done, and that there would be no difficulty in raising from five to six times the amount in hand, we think His Worship the Mayor, who is always ready to promote everything that tends to the beautifying and adornment of the city, would consult the wishes of the citivens if he called a public meeting to consider the subject, and decide on what steps should he taken, either to use the sum now on hand, or to adopt it as a nucleus for something larger and more imposing.F:RST COMMUNION.your son or daughter making their First: Commun Go to Faguy.Lepinay & Frere, and you will find everything wanted. It's difficult to convince the taxpayers who
