into the Senior Lacrosse league, has anything but pleased some of our Montreal contemporaries who never miss a chance to run down the Quebecers when it suits their purpose to do s0.Why this animosity should exist it is impossible to ray, but the fact, however remains that a few of the Montreal papers always find fault when Quebec wins either at hockey or lacrosse. All those present at last Saturday's match agreed that Quebec team had surpassed themselves and if they won it was because they put up a better game than their opponents.‘There was no brutality about the game and only two men were put off by the referee, Mx.Adams, of Cornwall, who rendered justice to all. However, the Montreal Sunday Sun had to find fault and in its last issue the following appeared: A GENUINE SURPRISE.When the news was heard in this city that the Quebec team had defeated the Capitals by seven games to th ed the Capitals by seven games to three there was a general gasp of ns- tonishment. The first impression was that the Quebecers had hamimer- ed the life out of the Cepitais. The second was that someone was making money.Any way the men who had bet even money that the Capitals would double the Quebec score simply because no ‘Quebec money could be got any other way were made clear through. And as yet no one knows the true inside of the story. It was a veritable clowl- burst. That Quebec—a team which is hardly in the same class as the older clubs—should defeat a leading club like the Cupitals, was deemed {veposterous.Of course we all know that in lacrosse it is the unexpected that happens. But in this case there sceins to be a nigger in the woodpile somewhere.Afeer publishing the above, the Sun concludes by remarkinz that the | Quebec team were in good form and to 98%, the London cable being 100%.No other sales were in such small lots, and they can scarcely be considered as constituting market prices. The Twin City statement for June shows an increase of $10,425.50 in earnings the total for the month being $61,- 117.35.London eahle today quoted Grand Trunk firsts 8265.seconds 55, thirds 23.Canadian Pacific, 100%.prenons Pay 2814.Anaconda £11 CLOSING TRANS \\CTIONS.Asked.Offend._— 7 = : EERE monthly graif crop " Waslington, D, C., July 10.—The report jesued to- 000 bushels.Corn, 12,963,000, decrease 505.000 bushels.Oats, 5,652,000, decrease 29,000 bushels.Rye, 727,000, increase 5000 bushels.Barley, bushels, 977,000, increase 79,000 NEW YORK STOCK MARKET.New York, July 10.— The continued tightness in the money market precipitated liquidation of spe culative accounts to-day, which resulted in losses ‘in values ranging from one to three points In all the principal active stocks traded in.Heavy selling for London account marked the opening of the exchange and as the day advanced call loans were marked up to seven per cent. This forced many speculators on the long side of the market to close out. There were special points of weakness besides in one or two prominent stocks, which the bears were quick to take advantage of, and which were a potent wetor in the general sentiment favoring a decline. Most conspicuous of these was Peo ples Gas, which opened at 117 against 12044 on the last sale Saturday. There were heavy offerings of this stock, but determined support worked a quick rally of 15.Afterwards it fell helow the opening mice and closed with a net loss of nearly three points. The demand made upon Metropolitan Street Railway Co on bebalf of its employees and rs of a costly strike caused the stock of that company to drop 55 at one time. All of the local traction stocks were affected sympathetically, Manhattan losing three points, and Brook lyn Transit over two points on the day.Sugar also was notably weak, the selling being credited to realizing by speculative holders. In the railroad list the weakness was more restricted to the stocks which have been recently pushed up by speeula- tive manipulation, Pennsylvania, New York Central, Atchison pfd., Burlington, Reading, 1st pfd., and other stocks equally prominent in the speculative world being at one time two points or more below Saturday's prices. The Grangers generally, the coalers and the trunk lines declined (rom one to two points. The Northern and Southwestern stocks as a rule showed resistance to the de cline, and their net losses for the most part were small fractions. The steel stocks also were little affected by the prevailing weakness. The delay in expected relief in the money market seems to be due to uneasiness caused in foreign centres by the continued tension over the situation in the Transvaal.Paris is very heu- vily involved in Kaffir speculation, and the feeling there is nervous over the possible effects of the outbreak of hostilities. The pressure on London from Paris was reflected here “in sales estimated as high as 50,000 shares. The shrinkage in yalues coming on the low level of Rew York bank reserves necessitated the calling of loans which in many cases it was tound dificult to replace with other accommodations. The ‘market showed very feeble rallying power, and closed very slightly aboye the lowest.at tho Stock Ex- The olosing change were as follows ;— …)| 8% |865|875|8+0 sm|suiss a cs.caps, J.A.Paquet; said of all the officers, who look after their men, strictly it you will, but at the same time in a spirit of goodness, which have endeared them in the hearts of their subordinates.THE INSPECTION.On Wednesday afternoon the ftispee- tion of the 11th Brigade took place io the presence of GEneru Hutton and staff. It was a ’aplendid.success, nnd notwithataliding that al} the movements in brigade order were gone through after only a nine day's | drill, the General vould not help expressing his praise. At the outset, | the four infantry battalions were drawn up in review order when the General arrived on the ground, nnd.the salute was perfect, and he so 6x- pressed himself.Afterwards the troops were marched to the upper fleld, where they were put through Battalion movements, skirmishing drill, etc.At the close General Hutton, addressed the Brigade expressing his utmost satisfaction .at the outcome of the inspection, he especially tomplimented the 87th battalion, for their steadiness, and from his words it was plain to be seen that they were the Dest drilled and uniform'y disciplined battalion in the brigade. It is well known that General Hutseruently his words bear weight.T cannot elose without giving credit to whom credit is due, Lieut.- Col.Pelletite, commanding officer.of the 11th Brigade, and his staff, including Capt.Ouellette, of the Pt battalion, acting Brigade-Major, w were most indefatigable in ‘their duties.,eut.-Col.Pelletier is truly a soldier, and the 11th Brigade are deeply indebted to him in more re sj ects than one.I was a close observer of all that took piace and must say us an old newspaper min that a cleaner and more disciplined, campaign was never heretofore held in the district.of Quebec, and this is largely due to superior arangements, drawn up by Lieut.-Col.Pelletier, his staff, officers ~of the district, instructors of the R.C: A.and R.R.BUGLER.Quebec, July 8th.SPORTING NEWS: LAWN TENNIS, New York, July 10, — “Mae”
