Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Needless to say they were much enjoyed. The Club ran an excursion to Sherbrooke on the 4th March, as guests of the Sherbrooke Snowshoe Club. The magnificent way our boys were treated is known to you all, and we can only show our thanks and sppreciation to the Sherbrooke Snowshoers, by inviting them down to Quebec, and giving them the best we can give, and which they assuredly deserve. The Old Black and Red was well to the fore in the races held on this occasion. Our boys brought home with them a very handsome cup, won in the team race, and several of our members are the proud ra of valuable medals, etc.‘The club's membership now stands at 156, there having been 10 rusignations and 12 new members elected last season. As will be showu by the Treasurer's report and financial statement, the finances of the Club are in good condition, there being a small balance on the right side to carry over to next year. All the outstanding accounts from last year have been set- tied.Brown, the caretaker, was thorough ly satisfuctory in his work during the past season. This report was well received, as well as the Treasurer's, which showed that the QuebecSnow Shoe Club's finances were in a healthy condition, The election of officers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with and resulted as follows :—President, A.H, Peters ; Vice-President, Jos.Ginras; Secretary, F.M.Macnaughton ; reasurer, 8.Burrow, re-elected ; Committee, M.Joseph, A.E.Scott, J.Cassils, F.8.Stocking, F.O.Judge.Mr Peters, the newly elected President, being called upon, made a short speech thauking the members for having elected him to the position. He predicted that this year would be a banner year with the Old Black ond Red and hoped that as many of the members as possible would attend the weekly tramps.“ in officers, Mr.8.Barruw, seconded hy Mr.In Judge, proposed a vote of thanks to Mr, for his kindness in placin After a vote of thanks to the retiring Belivesu, the Manager of the Frontenac, a room at the disposal of the Club, which proposition Your Wants will be announced Twice: in the CHRONICLE for .TEN CENTS.PRICE ONE CENT.Club, which was to have been held last evening, was postponcd, as there was no quorum.LIVERPOOL AUTUMN MEETING.London, Nov.10—At to-day's racing of the Liv 1 sutumn meeting, Lord Farquahar's five-year-old bay horse Nouveau Riche, ridden by Slosn, won the Liverpool stakes, Sir J.Miller's Calasbiels was second and Mr.H.W.Gilsey's Rampion was third. The Aintree plate was won by Philopena ; Captain eadworth Lambton’s two- year-old chestnut colt Semands), ridden by Sloan, was second, and Mr.C.A.Barrasford's three-yaar-old colt Little Crafton finished third. There were eleven starters in this race, and the betting was 7 to 1 on Samandal, Mr.T.Corn's two-year-old bay colt Shepperton, by Roysl Hampton, out of New Magdalen, ridden by Sloan, won the Wyredalo plate. The Shewbread gelding was second and King of Pearls finish third. There were twelve horses in this race, and the betting was 9 to 2 against Shepperton.ROBBERS HOLD UP A TRAIN Hight Men in the Gang.and all Were Well Armed.DETAINED THE TRAIN TWO HOURS, Blew Up One Safe But Could Not Open the Other One.Fergus Falls, Minn., Nov.10 —The Great Northern through train which passes through this city at 7.30 p.m.was held up and robbed about five miles west of here to-night.There were eight robbers in the gang, all well armed. When the train was stopped the bandits fired a number of shots and warned the conductor and brakeman to keep away. They then compelled the express messenger to leave the car and pro- ceedod to blow up the safes. One safe war des , but a second could not be - Departmental Stores, Z.PAOUET, 187-168-171 Et Joseph Street, TELEPHONE 217L Something wil Surely Interest You in This Column.Household Renewals ! date, pass beyond its control and be divided 2p into common, every-day building lots, separated into blocks by narrow streets. The Government is simply the occupant of the property in virtue of & ninety-nine years' lease from the Revd.Ladies who have the patent of the land, and to whom it reverts in the course of the next three or four years.Nobody can blame these Ladies for doing what everybody else would do under similar circumstances, and for attempting to turn their property to the most profitable account, as soon as the present lease expires. They quite understand that it will pay them mach better to cut it up into buildi.g lota than to renew its lease, en bloc, for the $200 or thereabouts that they now annually receive for it from the Federal authorities, and this, it has been already given out, is their present intention. Now there is good reason the - belief that not only the citizens of Quebec, but the entire population of Canada, would gladly see some sacrifice made for the purpose of preserving the famous battle field intact. It is surely not too much to expect that the enthusiastic loyalists of the West, who wax so warm at the bare idea of the erection in Quebec of a memorial of Montgomery's repulse and death at tho cannon's mouth, will protest more vehemently still if the Federal authorities fail to make the necessary provision for maintaining in its integrity, the ground upou which the immortal Wolfe died victorious.French Canadas, justly proud of the equally gallant Montcalm and of his heroic defence of Quebec, following his brilliant vietory over the English General on the heights of Montmorenci, will, no] doubt, object no lesa vehemently to the despoiling of the scene of one of the most glorious expluits of its forefathers. The soil watered by the blood of two such heroes, to whom valor gave a common death and history a common fame, is tuo precinum a national heirloom for a Dominion with such promise of future greatness as ours to divest itself of for the saving of a few thousands of dollars.Quebec, without the Plains of Abraham, would be like Mount Vernon without the tomb of Washington, or Stratfurd-on-Avon without the burial place of Bhakespeare and Anne Hathewsy's cottage. We have lost our city gates and much moreof what wasofiuterestto visiting tourists, and it becomes not only our own people but those of the whole of Canada who profit by the large annual influx of summer visitors to the Dominion, to see to the retention of the best of what now remains to us in the shape of desirable relics of a glorious historic past. Some years ago, -sbout 1876, —anumberof Quebecers, amongst whom was Hon.R.R.Dobell, formed themselves into an sssociation for thepurpose of acquiring the Plains of Abraham and establishing a driving park thereon, The scheme fell through, principally because of the difficulties connected with the ownership of the land.Mr.Dobell is now & mgmber of the Dominion Goverment. To him, as well asto the Prime Minister, who owes his seat in Parliament to the votes of Quebecers, it is only reasonable that the peuple of Quebec, no less than those in other parts of the Dominion who are interested in this question, should look for the maintenance of the most famous battlefield vf Canada in its present entirety. The pairiotism and the national pride of à unite& nation will look to the Government to take this step, and todo it betimes, at as regsonsble a cost asit may find possible, before any further snd final disposition of the property is made by those who possess the absolute right of dealing with it upon the approaching expiry of the pregent lease.for Germany and the States. An incident of some international signi- fieance is reported trom Samoa. The old King of the Islands is dead and à new one has not yet been chosen.Joint control or protectorate of Samoa belongs by treaty to Great Britain, Germany and the United States, which in 1889 recognized the independence of the country, and each of which in turn selects the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.Latterly, the Germans upon the Islands have been endeavoring to impress the natives with an idea of their supremacy in Samoan affairs. The first objection to this course came from the British Consul on the Islands, though the action protested against is believed to haye been mainly directed aginst the United States. The American Government has evidently construed it as such, for orders have been issued to the U.S.S.Philadelphia tu proceed to Apis, and now it is reported that the Yorktown is to follow her.The Now York Sun believes thatthe United States Government should not only send vessels to Samoa but keep one there, and in support of its suggestion points out how short 15 the run from Honolulu to the South Seas. The British and American Consuls appear to be working in complete harmony.Germany's attitude at the present time must materially increase the value tu the United Sates of England's friendship.zamersi Meeting of tho Depositors and Csedi.| Not only did that friendship stand her in | disn Regimeutgoud stead in the Philippines as it is now ladies aud gentlemm who may wish -Cel- J.F prurabull, furnishes the ronicle with the following, regarding the Hundredth regiment ok 8 I have just read with much interest that the Scotish National Societies of Vancouver have offered through the Governor.General to furnish a regiment of Scotchmen for Britain, raised from among themselves, to serve at home or abroad, Such offers are sometimes not intended to be taken too seriously, particularly at this moment when Canada 1s a defaulter, inregard to her furnishing recruits to the repatriated 100th Regiment now stationed at Halifax. It may not be out of place to remind your readers that this regiment was sent to Canada, in response to the many patitions from official authorities in pyery Province of the Dominion, addressed to H.R.H.the Prince of Wales’; with the expestation that its establishment of men, would be supplied qnd maintgin- ed, with Canadian recruits, There is, however, this to be ssid in extenuation, that Canadians will not enlist into a regiment specially designated na “The Leinsters,” and the Imperial authorities can render immense assistance to, and popularize the repatriation movement, by carrying out the special wishes of the authorities, Greet His Successor.Although preparations are being mado for the reception here of Lord Minto, the new Governgr-General, on Saturday, it is very doubtful if he will arrive in time. The Scotsman, on which the Vice-Regal party is crossingthe Atlantic, left Liverpool on Thursday week last, and will have made fairly good time if she reaches here Saturday.Butall the incoming vessels have been delayed by storms from two to three days. The Labrador, which brought out the domestic staff of the Governor-General, reached here Monday, two days late, witer a very rough The lake Buperior is reported two days behind. It is, therefore, hardly to be expected that the Scotsman will reach here on schedule time.It will not be sur prising if, uader the circumstances, she is not here till Monday next. There has as yet been no report and after the Scoteman p Heath Point, where she ought to be sighted, she will have a run of 34 hours.Lord Aberdeen is, however, ex ed hére to-morrow and in the evening he will receive a civic address.Lord Aberdeen is booked to sail on Saturday afternoon in the Labrador, after welcoming his succes- wor and transferring his officeto him. But, if Lord Minto is delayed till Monday, as neems more than likely, Lord Aberdeen may not be able to receive his successor. He may take passage on Saturday and pass Lord Minto on the St.Lawrence.ARRANGEMENTS FOR TO-DAY.It is expected that Lord Aberdeen, accompanied by Lady Aberdeen and staff, will arrive here at 2.15 tliis afternoon by Canadian Pacific Railway from Montreal. They will bo recaived by Mayor Parent and the City Council at nine o'clock attbe City Hall, where an official reception will be tendered them and a farewell address presented to them from the citizens of Quebec. The Eighth Royal Rifles band and a guard of honor frum the Royal Canadian Artillery will be post- od at the main _eutrance of the City Hall to receive His Excellency, Lady Aberdeen and the civic authorities on their arrival. The Viceregal party, after the sentation of the address, will hold a formal reception of Quebec's citizens in the Council Chamber, to which invitations have been issued only to those holding official positions, but as will be seen bythe advertisement in another column all citizens are invited, as it isthe especial wish of her Excellency, Lady Aberdeen, to meet all Quebec at this reception. When the reception is finished representatives of the Quebec branch of the National Council of Women will present an address to her Excellency as the organizer of that institution in the Dominion of Canads. The presentation will be made by Lady Cassault, the wife of the Chief Justice, President of the Quebec branch, The City Hall will be decorated for the occasion.MONTGOMERY RULED OUT.Quebes Historieal Soclety also Protests Against 2 Monument At the monthly meeting of the Lite: and Historical Society of Quebec, on Wednesday, Philippe Baby in, Prosident, in the chair, the fullowing resolutions were unanimously adopted :— Moved by Bir James McPherson Le- Moine, Vice-President, seconded by the Very Rev.Dean Norman, Vice-President.1.That the Literary and Historical Society is happy in seizing on the present occasion to add its proteet to the energetic protests of several leading Historical Societies of Canada, against the recently mooted projoct of honoring by a public monument, at Quebec, the memory Brigadier General Richard Montgomery, the leader of the invading host, who fell at Pres-de-Ville, Quebec, on the 31st December, 1775, in his abortive attempt to capture the city, which, according to the General Order promulgated by him to his army, on the 16th December, 1775, was to be, when taken, delivered to pillage.2.That the idea of honoring the memory of a fallen, ruthless foe, invading unprovoked the territory of a friendly people, and using to that end the Inowietge ac- uired by him whilst a British officer under meral Wolfe in 1759, is nothing short of an insult tw the hallowed memory of the patriotic and devoted defenders of our soil, —our brave militiamen and regulars,— who shed their blood to save their heart! and homes from devastation and pillage.3.That whilst this Society rejoices with all Quebec at the present friendly feelings existing towards our neighbours across the border, nothing, in its opinion, would tend more to impair and destroy this friendly feeling than this attempt to recall from the dust of a dead past an unpalatable—s psinful memory.First Snow of the Season. The first snow storm of the season struck town ing the drawing of hea up che bille the following circular Las been sent to the various cosl dealers in the city: — Quebes, October 24th, 1898, Sirs, —I beg to draw your attention to the importance of having shaft rests on ail your cual carts and of instructing your drivers to be careful to use them to relieve the horses when standing to rest on any of the city hills, the use of the rests at present being very much neglected, and I notice many coal carts without them.I would here suggest for your serious consideration tho advieability of emler- ing à trace horse on Mountain Hill.It often painful to witness the terrible straining of horses drawing heavy loads of cos) up that hill.I learn that a trace horse JOHN T.RUSS, President Quebec Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It was intimated at the meeting that in Montreal some of the coal dealers, seein; the necessity that existed for it, had pic a trace horse on some of the hills to assist in drawing up the heavy loads. The question of the advisability of having a Sheltering Home for disabled animals, something similar to those in London and New York, was suggested and the bo was expressed that the matter might take some practical shape. In these places neglected horses and other animals are properly cared for, and fed till such time as their owners are in a better position to luok after them. The Committees were glad to note that Palace Hill had been put in excellent condition and the stones wore so arranged at the turn of the hill that it was a great advantage to horses drawing heavy loads. The President intimated that an advertisement had been inserted in the English and French papers lately relating to Mr.Hall, V.8., offering his services one day in each week to the work of the Society, One of the members alluded to the sale of horses or Fair which was held last week at the Palain Market, where horses were sold as low as $6.00, These animals were poor and apparently worn out and half starved, and the Committee would be gratified to see such an exhibition abolished. The Superintendent's report for last month showed that he bad investigated several special complaints, had three animals destroyed that were unfit for work, and had prosecuted the work of the Society in an efficient manner.À verdict of death from cerebral apoplexy was returned by the jury, at the in.uest
