Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF QUEBEC.There was a regular monthly mfeeting of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec, last Wednesday afternoon, in the rooms of the Society, Morrin College. As our readers are aware, doubtless, this So.ciety has long been one of the institutions of our country. It was established as far back as 1824 by the Earl of Dalhousie, then Governor-General of Canada, and through his influence a Royal Charter was obtained for it.The scope of the society\u2019s operations is widespread, its collection of manuscripts and rare historical documents, printed and otherwise, is extensive and valuable, its museum is creditable, and the library* and reading room are cxceed-ingly good, and servo their purpose admirably.Such students of history as Francis Parkman, General Rogers, Ben, Pkkley-Poore, Mr.Edward Slafter and other men of mark have made frequent use of its collections of papers, and it stands to-day, as one of the foremost bodies of the kind on the Continent. The name of the society is known far and wide, and the desire of its members is to keep it at the head of kindred institutions throughout the world.Up to within a couple of years ago, the Government of Canada and afterwards of Quebec, recognized the value of ita labours by yearly granting it the sum of seven hundred and fifty dollars. This money was devoted to the annual publication oj proceedings and transactions, and the reprinting of old and rare manuscripts. That the society properly administered and distributed this fund, is a well established fact.In the archives of the society there remain many hundred of pages of very rich material relating to our early history, the want of money only preventing the officers of the society from publishing them. When the grant was taken away, the society was left to its own resources, and at present less than three hundred gentlemen remain on its lists of members. The annual fee is but four dollars a year, and for this sum the members have the use of the library (about 13,000 volumes) the reading room, containing the principal English, French and American periodicals and magazines, the museum, and admission to a course of lectures. The revenue, however, which is received at present, is not large enough to enable the council of the society to add to the library all the works of merit recently published, which they believe ought to be on the shelves of the institution. Now, to our mind, this society ought to be kept up.Its library ought to receive in the way of additions, at least a hundred volumes of new books per annum.Within the last two years very few new works have been bought, and the frequenters of the rooms have not unnaturally complained. It has occurred to us that our citizens have the remedy in their own hands. We have pointed out the benefits which the society offers to those who love reading, and the study of history and literature. There is no reason why the membership might not be increased\tat\tleast tenfold, and we would suggest that all persons who wish the society well, and who sympathize with its aims and aspirations, might send their names ic to the Secretary as candidates for membership.Jn a city of this size the Literary and Historical Society eught to have at least a thousand members S OUR SALES ARE ALL STRICTLY CASH our pricai vi l bo f-und much below
