in Madrid.Among the officers of the garrison strong speeches against France were delivered. The hostile reception to the King in Paris baa considerably increased his prestige at home ; his personal courage and discretion, hia dignified bearing and hia visit to Gravy’s house without escort, are subjects of eulogium and admiration.Tbs royalist papers express themselves with great seventy against the French and accuse M.Gravy's Government with not having displayed energy to protect the royal guest or Danish the rabble. After the return of the King, a note will be sent demanding sending through Lord Lansdowne s district in Ireland, a special correspondent, with instructions to find out for himself, the truth of the rumors recently published concerning His The and Home Rule as applicable to Ireland as well as to Canada, formed part of the subject of discourse.I took occasion to hand Lord Lausdowno a copy of Mr.Blake's speech made in the House of Commons on the Irish question, which I opportunely had in my pocket, and with which His Lordship appeared pleased, expressing his intention to give it a careful perusal.I had als") the honour of being presented to Lady Lausdowno, who asked many questons about Ottawa, the climate, bow the country was likely to look on their arrival, enquiries about the Princess Louise, etc.Her Ladyship is tall, fair, and dignified, has a handsome, sweet countenance, and a very gracious manner His Lordship is of middle height, not stout, dark complexion, high forehead, heavy black moustache, and has a great deal of Lord Dufferin’s friendly manner and courteous disposition. He has the reputation of AN ABLE STATESMAN, and the universal prediction is that he is pre-eminently the right man in the right place as Governor-General of Canada.To-morrow morning Lord Lansdowue leave* hero for England. He goes from thence to Scotland to see his mother, SJ.SHAW & Co., Saint John Street, Upper Town, and Notre Dame NEWFOUND AND.Newfoundland is about to imitate the example of the rest of Her Bptannic Majesty’s Colonies, and is making arrangements with the Colonial Office through which she is to have a representative in England.“The oldest British Colony” is at last awakening to a sense of her responsibility in this world. She has some very important interests to conserve, and a vast export trade to protect. The High Commissioner for Canada, and several Agents General for the Australian posses siens of the empire, have done well for their respective Governments, and there is no reason why Newfoundland could not be helped in the same manner.A special agent in London would, in a variety of ways, prove a great benefit to the Island Newfoundland has made some strides during the last eight or ten years. She is doing some good work just now in facilitating her means of inter communication. Her liberal-minded Government is paying attention to railroad construction, and altogether the land of cod, and rare old __foras everyone knows the best wine in the world can be bought in St.John s, is fast becoming a desirable place to live in.We expect to hear of the inauguration of immigration schemes next year, with a view to the proper settlement of the Island, with a good class of British farmers. But Newfoundland is making a mistake in remaining so long alone, away out there in the bleak Atlantic. She ought to come into the Dominion, and share with us the prosperity which we enjoy.Canada is willing.the story tiuence in the community, and in view of all the scandalous stories set afloat against the Marquis, out of sheer malice, we believe, it cannot have too extensive a circulation. We gladly make room for it here in our columns to-day.It is a complete answer to all the untruthful attacks which have been raged against a gentleman who has been proved to be Innocent of any charge of severity, and whose management of his estate has been wise generous and liberal to a degree. We ask, in his behalf, an attentive perusal of the following better from the Toronto GMbe, at the hands of our readers Ke>mabe, Co.Kkbry, Ireland, Sept.3.Kilgarvan, from which I last dTote, is a little they mean well, and if they do good, why not encourage them a little l Perhaps, after a while they may sing sweeter songs, and tell the wondrous story in better phraseology. The Standard gives these particulars concerning the growth of the army :— “The army has 180 officers abroad. In India a sufficient number of natives have * joined the army to provide interpreters in their consequence. The dispensary doctor is the slave of slaves.A “red ticket” from a poo law guardian, or from a member of the dispensary committee, lot it be presented day or night, ia a mandate paid is £100 a year ; there are fees as registrar and sanitary officer, and also for vaccinations ; and these bring up the yearly amount to from £20 to £30 additional. As for the emoluments from and rearing their bare heads in sutely grandeur are objects of much interest in the distance.Tho whole of the village and a good part of the suwounding lands belong to Mr.A.B.Hortop, of Dalby and embraces all varieties of soil—mountain and valley, tillage, pasture, and meadow, and no inconsiderable number of acres of plantation. The tenants are numbered in thousands.I hare conversed with hundreds of them and travelled over a large portion of the estate, and the general testimony is in favour of the Marquis as a liberal, generous, and considerable landlord. This I found borne out by the testimony of Bishop Higgins, and, without exception, by the priests of the diocese. All expressed themselves in indignant terms at the animadversions of Lord Lans-downe’s character as a landlord, which they had heard appeared in a portion of the Canadian and American press. He lives as much as possible at Dereen, in the midst of his Irish tenantry ; he has done so all through the recent troubles and disturbances, and has gone about arçongst the peofile unarmed at all times, and disdaining police protection when such a thing was suggested.I own that, from some things I had read and heard in Cork, I came into the district rather prejudiced.A fortnight’s sojourn here has shown me how unreasonable were my prejudices, and how unfounded were the reports I had read and heard concerning the Marqnis of Lonsdowne as a landlord. And in addition to His Lordship Bishop Higvins, I give the name of the Yen.Archdeacon O’Sullivan, of Kenmare, a* corroborative authority for ray statements.I had the honor of AS INTERVIEW WITH THE NEW OOVERNOR-OENERAL of Canada to-day at Lansdowne Lodge, the residence of Mr.Trench, the agent of the estate. And here let me not forget to state the high esteem in whch Mr.Trench is held by the tenantry and the kindly way in which he is spoken of as an henest and upright agent.Mr.Trench is chairman of the Board of P.L.G., which is some test of his popularity. His Lord-ship asked me a great many questions •b jut the Dominion and the different Pro-viuces.He expressed surprise at the magnificence of our Parliament Buildings at Ottawa, at the network of railways with whicn Ontario was supplied, the North-West, touched lightly upon the boundary question, dwelt upon the increase of immigration, the immense onward strides that Canada had made and was making, the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and spoke of the grand future of the country with great hopefulness. On all matters, even to small details about Rideau Hall, the Citadel at Quebec, the trade of Montreal, the remarkable growth of Toronto, etc.His Lordship spoke with a wonderful accuracy of information. He knew the Globe well, and spoke of its ability and influence as if he were a constant reader of the paper. In the course of conversation he mentioned having met Mr.Edward Blake in'London , It is historical and adds another poetic feature to the tragic history of the downfall ot Quebec. What enhances its interest is the fact that a similar sceno was enacted only seventeen years subsequently. It was in the spring of 1776.Tiie Continental troops under Arnold had recovered from the blow received at Pres-de-Ville and under the cliff of Sanlt-an-Matelot, and maintained a defiant attitude in presence of Carle ton’s garrison. But one morning a boom was heard, black hulks were seen rounding the point, and the meteor flag of England streamed from the mastheads. It was enough.Que bec was saved.Arnold sdreated.lie it ad ded to bis fame—it was a approaching departure of H.M.S.“Northampton,” it was the last occasion upon which, as a correspou dent poetically expresses it, “the men-of-war could meet tho men-of-peace in friendly con test,” and the occasion was taken advantage of by the President of the club, H.Stanley Smith, Esq.,- to tender our visitors of the “Northampton” a farewell lunch, and ask as many of their lady friends, as could honor the court, with their presence, to be present, and wfth them bon voyage: The arrangements were wanting in no de tail, and were all perfectly carried out.Among the visitors present were Vice-Admiral Sir J.E.Commerell, K.C.B.,V.C., the Earl of Denbigh, his sons, Viscount Fielding and the Hon.E.Fielding, Capt.Digby and officers of the "Northampton," while Mr.Smith’s Quebec guests were of the elite of Quebec society.Halt-past one was tho hour named for luncheon, but it must have been really three o’clock before the ladies were comfortably seated in the gallery, and the first rubber opened with Messrs.Dougall and Bush of the “Northampton," against Messrs.A.F.Hunt and G.H.Thompson, representing Quebec. The visitors went to work with a will, Mr.Dougall, who has established a Quebec reputation for tremendous driving power at golt proving himself an adept with the racquet bat, and getting in some neat service, while Mr.Bush kept the ball going in a way, that made the outlook for Quebec rather a blue one.The first half of the g&me was altogether in favor of the “men-of war,” and their score stood seven to three before it began to get more even. From this point, however, the “men-of-peace” began to assert themselves, the play became keen ly interesting, and the game finally passed to the credit of the home team-score 15 to 11.The second was in favor of Quebec throughout, Mr.Thomson getting in some of telling service, which is acknowledged to be a little too good for anything in the court, and Mr.Hunt placing the ball with that skill and precision, which is the strong point of his game. The third, like the second and first, fell to the credit of Messrs.Hunt and Thomson, but that they worked for their .victory, and that their opponents were not idle, was evidenced by the long and repeated rallies, during whioh tho rush of feet, the vicious “swish” of the bat, as it sent the ball flying np the court, and the inspiring “Play up !"—“Play up.Sir !" of the marker, were as music in the ears of the confirmed racquet-player.Messrs.Dougall and Bush, in spite of the well-known disadvantages of contending in a strange court, made most determiner! tightT from first to last, and it is a long time since we have had the pleasure of witnessing as interesting match as that between those representatives of H.M.S."Northampton” and tho two best amateurs of the Quebec Coart.Several other good matches were played in the course of the afternoon.notably that between
