embracing the Indians and Chinese, and the miners at Cariboo ; and among all there is a growing desire lo hear more of tbe Word. The missions to Manitoba, tbe Bsska cbewan and North West Territories are also reported to be successful.A mission is also maintained to Japan, tbe reports from which point are very encouraging. The annual income of the Bociety is statid to bo $145,998.98; expenditure, $174,265 98 ; deficiency, $28,-257, leaving a debt ot $63,595.70 from this aud the previous year. The report couclud-ed with an earnest appeal to those present to contiibute so as to effectually reduce this debt.Mr.W.H.Ltfmbiy was called upon to address tbe meeting.Hu referred to his • ither’a removal from this city to Megantic, where the Methodist Missionaries soon followed, and to their labours he owed tbe fact that he stood before them a saved man.'Tbe subject that occupied bis attention was work for Christ.Tbe field to be occupied was immense, and the work was so well performed, that from tbe Island of Japan came converts to this country, one of whom he had the pleasnre of meeting at tbe Centennial.Christ bad done a great work for all, and we bad a great work to do for him.Life and all its advantages wete the gift of Chrtat, and God will hold us accountable for all these blessings. No country in the world needed missionary labour more than this.Bo many efforts were being made to suppress free thought and prevent tbe circulation of the scriptures of truth. We ought therefore to William McWUliam, C.Langlois and Louis Bonrget.Tbe above members were introduced'to tbe Chairman aod Councillors by the Mayor, and being welcomed to the meeting were invited to take seate.Councillor Russell stated that tbe members of the Council present were very glad to bave with them the representatives of the eitisens, and that It now cevolved upon tbe whole Committee to decide regarding tbe manner In wbich tbe investigation was to be conducted.Councillor Peachy suggested tbe advisability of appointing a stenographer to take the evidence that would be adduced In this Investigation.Councillor Broosseau advised that the matter be left over till tbe next meetiog.Mr.Weston Hunt desired to know from the Committee of Councillors in what manner tbe investigation was to be conducted, as the delegates sent from tbe citisens were entirely in ignorance of tbe system to be pursned.Tbe Chairman expressed his opinion that all the members of the Committee belonging to tbe City Connell would very much prefer that theotlnr gentlemen should decide bow tbe Investigation was to be conducted, tbe more so that the members of the Connell felt from the charges of negligence, 4o., made against them by the cilia-ms, teat they were all npon their tria'.Mr.Beanbien was of opinion that each member of the Committee bad the right to call any witness and pot any questions that he might deem necessary.Mr.Weston Hunt said that the representatives of tbe citisens had been called to join the Committee by the Connell, and that they now expected to be informed what they were nquired to do, what they were required to investigate, and to have whatever was to be investigated laid before them.He would like to see some figures and statements.Councillor FalUere thought that nothing could be done until a copy of the Auditor»’ report bad boon received. The Chairman stated that the Auditors had oot yet completed their investigation, bat that it was probable they would have their report ready to-night or to-morrow.Councillor Brousseaa suggested that the resolation calling tbe Committee into existence, and stating tbo objects for which it was appointed, should be read, which was done Mr.Beanbien stated that the present City Auditors were doubtless very good meo, but that former Auditors had not done tbelr duty and had failed to expose the evil.It was became the citiaena bad partially lost conti* deuce in the official anditing of the accounts of the Corporation, that at their meeting they had pqggested tbe employment of three aoflitors from amongst themselves, and unless f is was done, be did not believe there would be complete satisfaction.Coun.Brousseaa favored tbe appointment of special auditors, but asked how tbey were to be paid.Mr.Beanbien had no doubt tha.the citizens would be glad to pay tbe auditors out of tbsir own pockets.Aid.Gauthier contended that it was not the doty of the Coonoil to pay such ^.ndi-tors.* Mr.Mo William said that if the Connell refused to pay the Auditors, another pablic meeting of tne citisens might be called to decide bow the meaos were to be raised for paying them.Coun.Brousseaa read the motion adopted at the Citis us’ Committee in the afternoon, letting forth that as their five representative'! had not the time to give to a personal audit of tbe accounts, three auditors bo name! to do tbe work.He said that the oitiseus seemed to think that tbe time of the Councillors the Committee was not valuable at all, but that they must sit throughout the investigation, and also pay three auditors to represent the five members sent by tbe oiti Steeling of GUIsena.APPOINTMENT OF REPRKiENTAr T1FEB TO THE SPECIAL
