Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

My informant (wbo Is a Frenchman and talks English so imperfectly that he is under stood with great difficulty) states that a party of five persons, of which he wae one, set oat with two hot see and a to camp, one evening, one of the men complained of n sore tarent.Moi much was thought of it ky the rest of the party, till towards the middle of the night the man gave evidence of extreme suffering, bis throat being so swollen thst he could not swallow. He continued to *«t worse daring the night, and when morning came, waa quite insensible. He had been attacked by that most loathsome and fatal disease diptberia, which is alike malignant and terrible in the city and in the forest.Without medicine of any description, and nearly fifty miles from any human habitation, they could but anxiously await the crisis. They had not long to watt ; for before night set In, the man was n corpse. Before the first victim aspired, however, another of the party began to complain of the same d fficnlty, and a paper on the artificial production of gems. The specimens be has made are intermediate in hardness between strass and real diamonds ; they have the s&me brilliancy, and a certain fineness. The base he employs is alumina, but mixed with other substances ; so that they have not the transparency of Oriental jewels, which can be obtained only by pure alumina.Bat this earth is extremely sobject to devitrification ; moreover, it melts at a very high temperature only, and, instead of passing through a pasty state like glass, it suddenly becomes fluid like water, begins to boil, throwing off sparks all the while, and then evaporates, disappearing rapidly like camphor.Hence, in order to give ductility to this strange material, It is absolutely necessary 40 odd a strong proportion of silica to it, which prevents it from crystallizing ; bat then the hardness of the compound is very much reduced, though it still is comparable to hyaline quarts.By employing the oxy-hydrogen blowpipe on a support of charcoal, the inconvenience we have mentioned may be avoided ; but then the operator iaenrs another, which is that of babbles, that often remain imprisoned in the viscous sabaiaa ot.Giving a color to these artificial stones is another difficulty ; compounds of gold, silver and palladium cannot be used, because, onder the influence of great heat, these metals are immediately revived.Copper is the most manageable of all, and will give many tints.Manganese end nickel always yield an orange yellow; chrominm gives a bine and green. The stones produced by M.Gaudin are sapphires, rubies, emeralds, topazes, peridotes, colorless diamonds and aqua-marine.BIRTHS.On the 5th instant, the wife of Mr.Engine Grondin, Upper Town Market Hot*], cf twin son* till born.On the Sri as an epidemic in London, some months age, The World recorded its appearance, and gave timely warning of its undoubted contagiousness and of the consequent danger of its Importation into this port.Had that warning been heeded by our sanitary authorities, we should not now have to chronicle the undoubted fact that this disease has not only effected a landing on our shores, but threatens to spread with even greater rapidity than marked its extension in London. The number of cases reported by the Board of Health had risen from 32 on Saturday to 76 on Monday morning\u2014a ratio of increase which we may not unreasonably expect to see maintained for some time to come under the exceedingly favorable conditions offered by the neglected and filthy state of the poorer and most densely crowded quarters of the city.Nor may the mischief be confined to these polluted districts.Although relapsing fever finds its origin in destitution and filth, its poison, being generated, Is transmissible to the robust and well-fed as well as to the sickly and famished, no class or condition enjoying immunity irom its infection.Under these circumstances, it is evident that energetic measures should be set on foot not oniy to cleanse the foul slums where such sickness finds its firmest foothold, to relieve the privation of those who are most liable to fall its victims and swell the body of its contagion, and to seenre, when possible, the speedy removal of the sick from densely populated neighborhoods where it is likely to extend, but also to provide separate accommodations for the reception and care of fever patients. The admission of sueh cases into gsneral hospitals must inevitably he attended with danger to COMMERCIAL.The following i* the amount of dntie* collected at the Ouitom House,
