street that Sherman has fought a battle with Johnston, near Raleigh, and defeated him.New Orleans, March 17—The steamer Morning S’ar left here on the 15th inst.for New York.Gen.Canby is now near Mobile, and tbe grand attack by the land and naval forces upon the city will be made within five days.Generals Canby, Granger, and Smith went within four miles of Mobile on tbe steamer Laura, last week, and drew a heavy fire from many of the enemy’s batteries.Gen.Kirby Smith remains at Shreveport.Albany, March 23-—A serious accident occurred about noon to-day on tbe New York Central Railroad, about two miles west of Oriskany. The accident was caused by the breaking of a rail in two places. The engines, baggage and express cars passed over safe.Tbe smokingcar and six coaches were thrown off tbe track. Two were precipitated down the embankment into tbe ditcb, where the water was from two to five feet deep. Two passengers, the Rev.Charles Stark, of Lee Ceutre, Oneida, and Christopher Higgins of Higginsville, Oneida Co.were killed, and 20 or 30 more or less injured.New York, March 24.—The TViiune’s Wash ington special says :—News of tbe occupation of Goldsboro’, rumored yesterday, has been confirmed to-day by trustworthy parties who arrived here direct from Newbern.Sherman’s forces were disposed into march tog towards Goldsboro’ Station, on tbe railroad to Raleigh, to destroy the bridge across the Neuse River.Tbe centre had arrived at Goldsboro’ and tbe right, on the 21st, formed a junction with Schofield’s forces at a point 12 miles east of Goldsboro’.The victory claimed by the Confederates at BentOQYille, assuming that the official state ment is coirect, amounts to nothing and mere ly a check to Sherman’s left.Tbe next news from that quarter will doubt less be the entire accomplishment of tbe plans of Sherman.Tbe WorLCt special says :—Tbe fight alluded to in the Richmond papers of Tuesday, as hav ing occurred between a portion of Sherman’] forces and Johnston’s army, U understood, military circles, to have merely been a small fight with a detachment sent by Gen.Stone man to burn tbe.fine railroad bridge across Neuse River, near Hmithfidd, between Golds ooro’and Raleigh.Tbe Herald's special says that the report that Johnston and Lee have met' the enemy near Bentonvil'e is regarded here as referring to the city fiaukers of the extreme left wing of Gen Sherman’s army.It is surmised that Sherman may have sent a small force in that direction for the purpose of cutting tbe railroad con nection between Goldsboro’ and Raleigh and drawing Johnston away from Goldsboro’.Authentic information bus been received that tbe occupation of Goldsboro’ was effected by tbe main body of Sherman’s army in the course of the day of the reported battle of Benton ville.Johnston’s despatch states that tbe Union troops subsequently assumed the offensive, thus admitting that bis success was only temporary and unimportant.Tbe Wasb ngton Republican says : A gentle man from Richmond reports that the damage done by Sheridan amounts to $50,000,000.He says the strength of the army iu the Richmond entrenchments is 60,000, exclusive of 10,000 home guards. He does not believe Johnston bas over 45,000, though be has drawn several divisions from Richmond.Deep gloom prevails in Richmond and every body seems to feel that tbe day of retribution has come.Tbe Richmond Examiner says that the con scription of negroes goes on with difficulty Guards are stationed at every camp so that they may not escape. There is a great panic among tbe blacks and as much reluctance among tbe whites. The Herald of the 21st repeats that Kirby Smith bas 25000 negro troops organized and armed. The Examiner of the 21st says there are in that city between 5 and 6000 women and cbil dren belonging to the families of men who have fled from the Confederate conscription and escaped to the North. As provisions are scarce in Richmond it is proposed to send these non-fighting conscripts to tbe North also Tbe Milledgeville Union insists that it time Jeff Davis's administration and executive officers were overhauled. It thinks the masses have been fighting and suffering without ask ing questions, and announces that if the people of Georgia desire to have a convention they will hold it in spite of all the soldiers in the State. The Alabama Mail says that tbe demoraliza tion which is taking bold on the country is sapping the vitals of its power both at home and in the army. The Richmond Sentinel, of the 21st, learns that Col.Hollins was not killed by Sheridan' men.Tbe Lynchburg Virgianian says :—Tbe Alexandria Railroad has not been damaged ns much as was anticipated.Duly six bridges were burned, a mile and a-half of track torn up and the depots at North Garden, Coves ville, Rockfisb, Arrington and New Glasgow burned. The Herald's Washington special says;— Authentic information has been received that the Spanish Government have forbidden any lurtlier repairs or fitting ont of the Confederate ram Stonewall, at Ferro!, which virtually pre vents her from going to sea.The Herald’s Key West correspondent says Fo’t Meyer, Fla., has been evacuated by tbe Union force, which wa- taken to Fort Delaney on Punta River. The Richmond Whig of the 21st inst.says: A party of Georgia Cavalry made a dash on Fort McAllister, near Savannah, and captured a working party of negroes engaged iu dismantling the work.Tbe fleet opened on the Georgians and drove them away. The gold market is very fluctuating.^ This morning it opened at $1.50j, ross to $1.51j, and then steadily declined to $1.47J.Washinoton, March 24.—Advices received from the Army of the Potomac say that a great deal of firing bas taken place lately, the Confederates opening fire on some of our working parties, os well as at the Avery House signal station and upon passing railroad trains, but so far the fire has done no injury.Picket firing in the same portion of the line is kept up constantly at night, mainly to prevent desertions from the Confederate army.(From Lloyd’s (London) Weekly.) Over-riding and putting every other question iulo the shaile, the defence of Canada forces itself upon the attention of us all.It would seem that discretion in discussing this weighty matter is no longer necessary, since there is little doubt but that the recent peace negotiations between North and South include a sug gestion that Fédérais and Confederates should bury their mutual animosities for a while and combine to make war upon a common enem f, The baseness and wickedness of such a proposition will awaken in this country a determination to uphold our honor at any sacrifice, and to defend Canada at any odds.We are among those who still believe that peace between North and South is not far distant, and that tbe flaming and boastful speech lately made by Mr.Davis expresses the violent sentiments of hi-, coterie and not the opinions of the Confederate public. We still hold that, in this mighty civil war, justice and right have been on the side of the North, and that her cause must in the end prevail. We are not the less disgusted with the base ingratitude and delibe rate treachery which are involved in the Fede ral desire to make war upon this country by an attack upon the indefensible frontier of Canada. It Is by onr strict neutrality alone —a neutrality which has cost ns millions, and has spread misery broadcast among our cotton operatives—that the North has been able to make way against the Southern rebellion.Hail we, ns we were templed to do, cbmbinedwith France to recognize the South as an inde( endent confederation, there would have been an end of the war long ago.Our sacrifices have, then, brought upon ns the in gratitude of the Fédérais and a threat of vengeance from the Confederates. There is a set tied hostility against ns, North and South, which is, it would seem, carefully cultured by the leading men of both powers And we must be prepared, directly the Fédérais and Confederates come to understanding, to meet it.The American plan will he to overrun tbe Canadas, and, if possible, to extort submission from the Canadians, and to drive us into tbe sea.Cot Jervois, who is admitted to be a competent authority, reports to us that, in his opinion, the frontier is indefensible, and that as matters stand, when we are attacked, we shall be fortunate if our soldiers manage to reach our ships. We bave, then, to ask ourselves—and a very solemn and momentous question it i what our duty is towards Canada. Our duty depends mainly upon the line of coniuct the Canadians themselves have resolved upon.Did they manifest a disposition to sympathize with the States, and to become incorporated with them, then we should be absolved completely from the responsibility of defending them. But they show no disposition up to the present time to exchange the sovereignty of Queen Victoria, for that of Abraham Lincoln. They are, on the contrary, remarkable for the enthusiasm with which they proclaim their allegiance to tbe British Queen.Restive, at times, they certainly are, and prone to extravagant assertions of independence But they are loyal subjects of the Queen, and they are banding themselves together in a compact confederation, not in order to resist her sovereignty but rather to fight that they may remain under it.It being acknowledged that the Canadians are ready to bear their just part in a war, should the States force one upon them, they have as good a right to depend upon the armed assistance of KngDnd as Ireland has, should she be invaded. All classes of our countrymen look forward with horror to a war with a people who are allied to us in blood, and who speak our own language ; but this horror wonld give way to a mighty expression of the national will and resolve shsuld Brother Jonathan wantonly turn his armed hosts on to British territory. It is sad, indeed, that we should for one moment ba compelled to admit the possibility of such an outrage. But as prudent men, we cannot blind our eyes to it, and say tbat there is no reason for alarm since, whether we turn to the north or to the south, we find Americans, occupying responsible positions, who do not hesitate to bold up war with England as a solution of the difficulties that now separate Confederates and Fédérais Forewarned, we must In fore-armed.There is only one way in which we can lessen the chances of war between this country and America, and that is by being fully prepared foi attack. Our ministers have already declared that they will stand by Canada, should the Fédérais attack her.We bave no material ad vantage to gain by holding the Canadas ; and victory, against the Americans, would bring us no substantial benefit. We have, in short, everything to lose, and nothing to gain, by the defence of Canada. Our honor as a nation, our prestige as a brave and free people, are concerned, Our duty towards Canada in tbe event of an American invasion is as clear as it would bo were the French to seize the Isle of Wight, and plant the tricolor over Osborne house. The war would be a long acd bloody one ; it might be disastrous to our arms ; it would drain our treasure and parlayse our com merce ; it would leave our august ally of the Tuileries free to operate on the Rhine. From beginning to end, it would be tbe most deplorable event of modern times. But we could not, we should not, shrink from manfully taking our share of it.It is right, and it is the best prudence, that we should let Brother Jonathan know onr determination not to submit to the least aggression from him, nor to shriek for one instant from the least act that looks like a challenge. So we may teach him, before it is too late, not to throw back civiliza tion some fifty years, by committing a wanton outrage on a power with which be cannot find fault, founded in reason or in justice.New York “ Fashions” say there is a change already in the waterfall pins, facetiously called hymen 41 dumb bells.” The pins with huge bails at each end, connected by an elastic string, were considered the height of style. These have been superceded by the most fantastic and really grotesque shapes.Made of ebony, cornelian, amber, bronze, coral, silver, steel and gold—carved, inlaid, and covered with golden frame-work—every imaginable design is imitated, too numerous to enumerate. The most elaborate are bronzed wheels, each spoke covered with finearbesques.Arrows in-Ir.id with glittering gems; onyx) seals, with pendants of golden bells ; white lily-cups, with broad green enamelled leaves; gold and silver trumpets—these will give an idea of the caprice and extravagance of fashion. The following account of a very serious joke practiced upon a Deputy Provost Marshal is from ihe Tuscarawas, Ohio, Advocate of F riday 1 ist : “ About two weeks ago, two deserters, n imed Delaney and Caoningbum, made their appearance in Wayne township, in this county They openly admitted they were deserters from the army, and defied the authorities to arrest them. The Provost Marshal at Alliance sent a deputy after them, who bad orders to take them dead or alive. He was well provided with handcuffs and hobles, to place upon the wrists and ankles of the deserters. At the Falls of Sugar Creek Delaney and Cunningham found the Deputy Marshal in a room at the hotel somewhat intoxicated. They handcuffed and hobbled him—took bis money, revolver and knife—put him in a wagon and exhibited him through tbe country as a horse thief. After keeping the Deputy Marshal as a prisoner a day and night, they finally brought him to Canal Dover, and showed him in the public street Delaney would sing a song and compel tbe Marshal to keep time with his chains. After the deserters had all the fun they desired, they left tbe Deputy at the hotel and departed, much to the amusement of the crowd. On last Sunday evening Delaney was arrested in this place by Charles F.Esoick, of Rogersville, and placed in the new Philadelphia jail.On Tuesday Captain Black, of Pittsburg, took him to Alliance.Cunningham is yet at large.” The Cotton Plantations.—A gentleman just returned from the West, after much experience in cotton culture on the Lower Mississippi, gives deplorable accounts respecting the depredations of guerillas.Since the withdrawal of a considerable portion of the Federal troops, mostly cavalry, apparently fora movement towards Mobile, large tracts of valuable lands have been abandoned, the attempt to grow cotton, under present difficulties, being considered wholly impracticable.Guerillas destroy or steal everything beyond our picket lines, so tbat tbe prospects of a large yield tbe present season are enjoyed no longer.Tbe guerillas are made up from both armies, but for the most part are Confederate deserters. The latter operate with more impunity, from the fact that when captured they produce their papers, and claim the treatment accorded to prisoners of war.But for this, guerillas as a class would be much more summarily dealt with.Negro laborers are so intimidated that most of them depend for subsistence on the various camps.Even if disposed to venture into the fields, few of them would find anything to do.Another discouragement arises from tbe demoralization and disorder everywhere prevailing, so tbat whoever owns merchandize is pretty sure to lose it by swindling, or robbery or false charges or some other means best known to tbe cormorants who throng tbe military posts. This stale of things prevails, with few exceptions, from Cairo down.—N.Y.Journal.Hair Dye!
