but the attendance generally, was not large, owing no doubt to tbe press of business which at present engrosses the attention of our leading merchants.The report of tbe Select Committee of the Legislative Council ou tbe subject of tbe Western trade having been read by tbe President, the Hon.Mr Merritt proceeded to explain bis plan, the details of which have been alteady made public in our columns.He contended that, owing to tbe gr-al natural facilities of the St.Lawrence route, and the consequent cheapness of the transportation, tbe trade only needed a commencement in order to progress with a rapidity and to assume a magnitude of wnich it was almost impossible to from an idea at present.Wi.b regard to the expenditure necessary, in order to enable large sized propellers to be placed on the toute, the honorable gentlemen referred to the documents annexed io the report already alluded to, containing estimates of the probable cost of deep ening a channel through from the West, as far as Montreal.Then, as a consequence of these improvements, Mr.Merritt stated that grain could be brought to Quebec twenty-two c"nts cheaper than at present.Tbe subject was discussed by tbe President anil by Messrs.Lemesurier, Scott, May and other gentlemen present It was urged as one of the principal draw-backs that our long winter season would interfere, as tbe Western trader would prefer to make his arrangement with the New York merchant or agent lor (be business of tbe whole year, than to enter into a temporary arrangement with tbe Quebec mercba.it for six tnonibs' business.Another reason given was thediffi culty cf proceeding to any definite action in the matter, without the co-operation of the Liverpool merchants, with whom, it was urged the success or failure of the scheme necessarily lay.inasmuch as they alone could control the direction of the trade or choose tbe route, for which it would be necessary to offer some inducement in tbe shape ot a bonus.Finally the two following resolutions were passed after h little more than an hour bad been occupied by this disc ission ;— 1— y oved by H.S.Scott, Esq., seconded by Heury Lemesurier, Esq., and resolved—“That the thanks of tnis Council are due and are hereby tend* red to the Hon.Mr.Merritt, for tbe very important information he has furnished rela ive to tbe Western t.-ade and the superior advantages of tne St Lawrence route over that by New York " 2— Mov» 1 by R.Shaw, Esq , seconded by D.C.Thomson, Esq .—‘‘Thatit is desirable that a publi* 'leetiug of tbe citizens of Quebec be called i an early period, at which tbe Hon.Mr, Met !îtbe requested to attend, and shew tbe adv.tages which might be secured by a parti) ipat on in the Western carrying trade.” Tbe meeting then adjourned.POLICE COURT.BEFORE J WAUUIRK, KSQ., POLICE MAOI3TRATR.In this Court yesterday morning, Thomas Wickham, a seaman of the ‘Orillia,* was brought up on complaint of Captain Cummings, for refusing to do duty on board of that ship, on the 18th instant.The defendant was sent on boar 1.William Cunningham seaman of the ‘Grace,’ complained against the master of the said vessel on an action for wag.*s.Wages ordered to bp assessed, the Court holding the contract to have expired.Mary Pleaich, widow of the late William Fal-conhridge, complained of Ann Finn and Mary Mack for threatening her with personal violence, an«’n transacting business in the • >n»noon On bis return home, about half-pa:*' >» e o'clock.'••• informed Mrs.Campbell ihM he whs suffi ring from a severe pain in the l* io argue with him.that it is equally impos-ih e to the civil magistrate to repress the sin of u-iiiy ; the shot lodged in his breast and neck, inflicting severe wounds The neighbors, who hail come to his relief, were not allowul to state what the boy had confessed to them.The jury acquitted the prisoner of both charges, and a few minutes after, he was playing us unconcernedly as ever.Prfsextatioe or Plate to Mr C.J.Brtdgis The Hamilton Herald gives a description of the plate recently presented to Mr.C J Brydges, manager of the Great Western Railway.It says : The chaste and elegant articles composing this service, amount to seventeen pieces in • II, among which are: 1st a magnificent ice-dish supported by three polar hears, which are sarrounded by miniature blocks of ice poia ing upwards in irregular crystals In th': interior nf tbe bowl there is a cut glass salver which may be taken out at pleasure, and the farmer may then be used as a wassail bowl No-hinu can be more unique and beautiful than its design, and we have seldom seen a more appropriate ore.2nd, a large silver salver with a representation of cows standing in a field, and mountains in tbe distance, most beautifully chased throughout, There ar*-four cut glass fruit dishes elevated on pedestals of silver Figures representing the seasons stand with their arms entwined around them ;
