Titre :
Morning chronicle and commercial and shipping gazette
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

THE MORNING CHRONIC IÆ,* TTJjBS D A Y.SEPTEMBER 6, 1863.QUEBEC.SEPT.6.1853.THE AURORA BOREALIS.The fear of ridicule oftentimes |>revents eren men of lar^e understandings Iron» an expression of opinion, especially if such expression of opinion should interfere with any long cherished dogma.The majority of men never think of any matter which does not immediately interest them, but take tor granted, everything coming from authority.The name of a Newton,a ilerschell, a Halley, a Franklin, a Dick, an Airey,or a Bond carries a weight with it which no effort ot the deepest understanding could in the slight est measure effect as far as the mere smatte-rers of science in our colleges and schools are concerned.Mankind are not to he blamed (or their unwillingness to be instructed in new faiths, particularly when they are not >o closely observant or so deeply read as to be able to judge of the correctness or incorrectness of a new belief.Nay, the slowness of unbelief is always compensated for by the eagerness to swallow mure than the truth after the first glimmering ot truth has been exposed.Galileo aud Copernicus were sadly pestered in their days with scientific fools.The comfort is that semi-scien-titic opinions are not much heeded by the multitude, nor do they interfere with the progress of true science, which invariably results Iroin accident as in the case of Newton in the matter of gravitation.By accident the writer of these remarks saw, in the broad light of day, a brilliant aurora, with prismatic colours, beautifully displayed, and the coruscations most rapid,and he ventured on stating to the world and to the now very learned members of a learned society, his opinion, that the auiora was neither more nor less than the refracted light of the sun, moon or stars, and of each or all o( them as refracted through the clouds of an approaching storm, lie was laughed at.They all knew how to make an aurora artificially.The cause was electric.There was a general hiss.W e permitted these learned and most observant of the savant tribe to grin away, hut pursued (piietly our observations, and have been convinced that our first notion was perfectly correct.Indeed, we find that the merit of such a discovery is not even due to us, as Captain Parry, of the Royal Navy, hints at the theory of refraction in tin* following extract from his Journal of a voyage for the discovery of a North-west passage, published in 1821, in the (>th Chapter, page 131 ** The nuld weather with which the new year commenced was not of loni duration ; f»u.as th»-wmd gradually moderated, the thermometer slowly fed once more to the average t-miterature nt the atmosphere at this season.The quantity ol 41.ow which had fallen at tins time was so small that its general depth on shore did not exceed one or two inches, except where it had drilled into hollows.Al ten A.M , on the 1st a halo, whose radius was 22 ° 3i) with three paraselene, winch were very, luminous.bu< not tinged wi'ti the prismatic colours, was seen about the moon, simiUr to that described on the 1st December; and on the following day the same phenomenon occurred with the addition of a vertical stri|>e of white light proceeding from the upper and lower limbx ol ihe moon, and formint;, with a part of the horizontal circle seen before, the appearance ol a cross,as shewn in (he accompanying diagram There was also at times an arc of another circle touching the halo, which sometimes reached ah most t the zenith, and changed the intensity of its light very Irequeutiy, not unlike the aurora Borealis.” That, we xhould think, was pretty positive evidence.Here is another extract :— “ The exhalations arising from the earth were about this time observed to be very abundant, producing, during the day tune much of that appearance of waving tremulous motion in distant object», which the French call mi ugc, and which was usually succeeded by a fog at night, as soon as the atmosphere became cold.During one of these fogs, at four A.M., on the 16 h, the skv being perfectly clear in the zenith to3il3 ofalti-tude win s’ a dense haze retted on the iand, and as Captain Sabine observed 44 a haze bow of distinct and dazzling light, having its edges softened off, and with every appearance ol prismatic colouring.The legs ol the bow rote out of a biui»h haze, the colour of which somewhat res'm.bled that of weak starch ; not quite half a circle was complete ; the middle of the arch was between 22 3 and 23 ° above the land which is of little elevation and the legs weie 71 0 apart.The weather was nesrly calm, and there had been a considerable deposition of frozen dew throughout the night, several phenomena were observed on the mornings of the 2ülh and 23rd about the same hour.” And here is a third In chapter XIII after having spoken of a uniformly intense degree of cold, cold so intense that the mercury froze in the tube, the particles separating partially from each other and adhering lo the tube in the form of leaves of trees, Captain Parry speaks of a change and increase of wind, and a simul-taneoas increase in thê temperature of the atmosphere having taken place, when : — 44 Mr.Ross remarked a bright arch of the aurora in passing through the zenith from east to west, and meeting the horizon at each end : besides this, two smaller and apparently concentric arches were visible to the southward, the higher atch being in the centie about twenty degrees a-bove the horizon and the other about ten degrees.An arch of the same kind appeared at night in the south west quarter of ihe heavens.On the 3rd a column of light tinged with prismatic colours appeared on each side of the sun, of the angular distance ol 22 ° 6ô=., and a parahelion at the same distance above it.The columns indeed were properly speaking, parts ot an imperfect circle or halo: beyond these however, nt the ssme height above the horizon, and distant from the suo lorty-six degrees, was a second parhelion on enrh side, slightly colored like the others ; so (hat live of these were visible at the same lime, though none but the two lirst mentioned were very distinct.On the |6 h Mr Rn*§ and myself observed near the northern horizon, and exactly op-posi e to the snn, a circular patch of faint white light: its size was many times larger than that ot the sun, though it was not at all defined about! the edges, being indeed rather sollened off into toe | purple sky on which it rested.On the 22d the sun rose with a light spot of white light at the distance of twenty to thirty degrees on each side of it, and a vertical column of a red colour extended Irom the sun to about ten degrees above it.: This last phenomenon is very common in cold wea hei and when the sum’s altitude is very , small.A cross was observed about the moon on i the 27th consisting of vertical and horizontal ray* j of whitish light appearing lo pass through them ” We do not intend to add a syllable.Let those who feel any interest in so skyhigh a matter as the aurora, affecting as it must do the condition of the atmosphere, which affect* the crops, and the health of mankind, ponder over a new theory of a very wonderful, but not inexplicable phenomenon, especially as that which cannot ordinarily be seen under the light of the Sun, may appear fiery in the darkness of night.In Mary Somerville's admirable hook on the connexion of the sciences, which we had not even met with, until politely put into our hands by the llev.Dr.Adamson, Librarian of the Legislative Council, we find that our notions about the depth of the sea were not new any more than the theories about comet’s tails, or the aurora borealis.It is there stated that : — 14 A ray of light from a celesti»! object falling obliquely on this variable atmosphere, inatead of being refracted at once from its course, is gradually more and more bent during ita pannage through it ao aa to move in a vertical curved line, in the same manner as if the atmoapben?consisted of an infinite number of stiata of different denaities.The object is seen in the direction of a langent to that part of the curve which meeta the ev«.consequently the apparent altitude of the heavenly bodies »• always greater than their true altitude.It would be easy to determine the direction of a ray of light through the atmosphere if the law of the density were known ; but a* this law is per perpetually varying with the temperature the case is very complicated.When rays pass perpendicularly from one medium into another they are not bent ; and experience show», that in the name aurface, though the lines of the angles ol incidence and refraction retain the same ratio, the refraction increases with the obliquity of inciden- »»,_"irregular variations in the density of the are sometimes the cause of very singular notnena.” BRILLIANT NEWS.The news from the Chaudière is more than ordinarily brilliant.Gold is not only found in considerable nuggets and in sandy !»pecks at our “ Petit” Peru, but Mr.De Kuttermund has hit upon a Golconda—be not mistaken, not a Golgotha—iu the mountains to the northwest of the Chaudière.The Camulien is informed that that gentleman has found a diamond, ol the first water, in the region spoken of, worth from A* 1200 to .£1500! Certes ! as our contemporary exclaims, this is enough lo drive all the brilliant geniuses of the country to this neighbourhood.It is, however, to be borne in mind that there is a slight difference between one who has a genius for brilliants, and a brilliant genius, who is a gem in himself.Vir Sa pit.—There is a line of demarcation to be drawn between the man of the saw-pit and a mau of wisdom.Both geniuses seem to have laid their heads to gether in the erection of a saw-pit, opposite the Court House.It is but fair to give honor unto whom honoris due, and we therefore give to Mr.Chabot all possible honor for his enterprise and intelligence.A N TE-POST M UTIL ATION.The Board of Works have purchased from Mr.Alford, the fine old “Chien d’Orv house, in which the Post Office business is at present transacted, and some hanking also i> done, for the purpose either of repairing it ! ! or erecting a new Post Office upon its site.Repairing it?Surely there is not going to bo another piece of paltry patch-work, at a cost of JE4000.Why, the whole block, including Mr.Musson's shop, ought to|be purchased^o make a passable Ge lierai anil Particular Post Office.advantageous that coulé have been selected.Tl»e survey of the line of route we may add, is expected to be completed in about 15 days, and the favorable opinion expressed by the engineers at the outset as to its character is strengthened as the reconnaissance progresses.—(Gazette.) The Filiau Case.— We understand that Mr.Derouselle and Mr.Parant, the Beauport Justices, who convicted and fined Mr.Filiau for not taking bis hat oft.when the procession of \\\\\\efcte dieu was passing, have neglected to make a return to the writ of certiorari obtained by Mr.Filiau, and that it has been found necessary to move the Court for an order upon them to obey the writ within a short delay, upon pain of having to answer a rule for a contempt of court.—(lb.) that of an «Dgel winding its upw«id Bight ;
