we have since learned that the gale commenced on the afternoon of the 3d, and continued until the night of the 5th inst.A few vessels that were in BayChaB ur when the gale commenced, put to sea, and have mostly artived at various ports; but many which remained, suffered severely.As much anxieiv was felt here to know the worst, the conductors of the Merchant's Exchange News Room, with commendable promptitude, and at not a little expense, had all the intelligence that could be obtained transmitted to this city by magnetic telegraph.Prince Edward’s Island, the scene of most of the disasters, is about 100 miles long and 30 broad.A line intersecting North and East capes, its extremities, would run about W.N.W.and E.S.E.It is separated from the main land by a channel some thirty or thirty-five miles wide.The Northeastern coast carves inward, with a bend of eighteen or twenty miles.Along this coast are several harbors, of which the principal are Cardigan Ray, or Three Rivers; Murray Harbor; Richmond Bay, or Malpeo; Holland Harbor, or Cascumpec.— These harbors gonerallv afford a good anchorage.but are difficult of access, on account of the bars which obstruct their entrance.The shore is mostly of sand, which in many places is piled up in large hills, and the Northeastern shore above described was the scene of the disasters.From the account received at the Mer chant’s Exchange and other sources, we have compiled the following.The schooner Traveller, of Newburyport, bad been towed into Ricbibuoto, N.B., nearly opposite P.E.Island, no ore being 00 board, it was inferred that her crew had perished ; but a subsequent despatch staled all hands were saved.The Traveller is insured for $1200 on vsssel end outfits, at fhe Lafayette, (Indiana) Office.Tbe following Firtiier Partictlars of the Storm in Nova Scotia.—Halifax, Oct.11th.—By letters and telegraphic despatches from Pictou, we learn the following additional particulars relative to the fearful storm and marine disasters in the Gulf of St.Lawrence.Along the cost of Prince Edward Island, the whole shore is strewn with wrecks of vessels and the bodies of their crews.The Charlottetown coroners have gone lo the village of Cavendish, to inquire nto the deaths of 12 persons, wnnso bodies had been washed ashore at that place.The body of a man, with a boy lashed to his back, came ashore at Pestico, but waa not recognized.There is good reason to believe that over 100 bodies have been float ed to tl u beach, since the storm.From three to four hundred sail succeeded in getting safely into harbor.The schooner Florence, of GlcuceMer, Ocean, Hingham.Lake, Cohasset, ILunah Branch, Newhury-port, have arrived at P:otou to repair.— They all give most dismal accounts of the storm, which it is said had never been equalled.The following are the names of some of the vessels aslioru, not before reported Golden (iate, of Kennebec, Forest of Newburyport, Triumph, of Cape Elizabeth.A «easel grounded to the westward of Co head, and immediately went to pieces All hands lost.Sixty bbls of Ilnur and some dry goods floated a«hore from her.Two vessels sunk near Stanhope—names un known—all himds probably lost.Five uf tbe crew of the schooner Harriet, of Cas-line, were saved.The schooner Franklin Dexter, of Dennis, lost her crew of ten men ; subsequently five persons, perfectly naked, veered picked off her sides.New Y'onx, Sunday evening, Oct., 12tli —Accident to the Steamship Washington.— The steamship Washington, from this port for Southampton and Bremen, on the 4th inst., when three day* out, at 9 o’clock P M., lat.44 30, Ion.57 30, disabled her ma chinery by breaking the strap of the star board crosstail link, which compelled her te Rut back for repairs.She arrived at the lovelty Yard to-day at 9 o’clock, A.M At the tune of the accident she was going along at an easy rate, under her regular pressure of steam, with fine weather anil a smooth sea.It is understood she will bo re paired within the present week.and co-operation on this important matter We have tbe honor, &o., (S'gned) William Thomas, Chairman.Bryan Robinson, Vice-Chairman.Am ««OSE Shea, Secretary.To J.W.Dcnscombk, Esq., Quebec.(From the Public Ledxer, St.John's Nfld September 32.) but in the attainment of this object w* are not solioitoue that the line of steamers should terminate at this port; on the contrary, we think that our interests would be sufficiently conserved, and those of our Western neighboara promoted, if St.John’s were only the port of call, on th* outward and homeward voyages of stuam veesel* between the United Kingdom and the continent of Amerioa.’ pi track, whilst the course to St.John's from England, being more northerly, ie freer from fog, as well ae far safer.It is highly satisfactory to learn that th* report of the proceedings at the great meeting on Saturday last, together with the speeches that were delivered and the statia tical information afforded, will be published in pamphlet form ; end we have no donbt that when the facts therein stated shall have become known, capitalists will, without any other inducement than the ehortnes* of the voyage, and the safely of the lend fall, speedily adopt St.John's as an intermedi ate port ; put when they shall have learnt that the first company which ahail establish direct steam communication will be pretty sure of a bonua from oue legislature of al I by R Roberts least £3000 atg.a year, besides a grant from P« B«rk Pilot, Collins, for Sunderlw thelmporial Go?#rnm*r»« whiohwill b# songht 113 do elm, 45 do red pine, 28 and we believe obtained, and besides th* "hit# pin#, 360 std pine deals, •« < advantages of freight and passage-money, 1 7 •p•r,, by ,B which would be considerable—w* suspeol that ore long the self-interest of strangers will unintentionally co-operate with our interest, and that «learners will before many months elapse be plentiful enough for our purpose.The calculations submitted by Mr.Robinson, in hie speech, and which we believe to be considerably under rather than over the mark, ahewa a probable revenue, at once to a steamer, from calling here outward and homeward once a month only, ef j about £15,000 sterling per annum.We have good lighthouses on our shores good ports—good trade—plenty of coal—aud a local goveonmenl willing and ablate procure for this Colony that participation in Ih* improved powers of locomotion which ether parts of the world are enjoying ;
