ere they could get to Leyburn, of which Mr.Jones had been appointed vicar.Two days later they were still on tiie road.The forest was pretty thick hereabouts, and It mses wi re exceedingly few and far between.Tom had begun to show a certain anxiety to reach Leyburn—an anxiety that Mr.Jones did not share until he learned that they were now in the country affected by a small but effective band of bushrangers, of whom Captain Murphy, as lie was called, was tiie leader.Even then tiie parson was not scared.He had but little money with him.and Ids possessions were not of a very valuable kind.“I don't think," heobserved, "wehave much to fear.My poverty and my cloth, as they said in Brisbane, are our protection.” They were at length only an hour's ride from the station where they proposed to pas- the night.The parson had, in fact, just lit a fresh pii>e, convinced in his own mind that nothing was altout to hap]K>ti, when suddenly the scrub parted on both sides of them, and from out tiie towering undergrowth of tiie forest Stepped six men of the apuroved, or rather the much disapproved, bushranger type.Mr.Jones had, in fact, begun to turn out his pockets before being bidden, when the chief of the robber baud politely stopped him.“No, no,” lie said, with a smile.“Only your clothes, sir.You and your man will be well cared not disgrace you.” Tiie bushranger liavingattired himself in the parson's clothes, the new vicar of Leyburn produced a false beard that was an admirable facsimile of Mr.Jones’ beard and adjusted it.The metamorphosis was as convincing as it was complete.One of tiie younger rogues was then endued with Tom’s (the man's) clothes.After which, with due salutations, tiie car drove on, tiie parson and the real Tom being the next moment carried off, good humoredly enough, into the forest, whence they soon reached the celebrated Captain Murphy's lair.On tiie second day after tiie new vicar’s arrival tongues began to sound his praises.Tiie next day it was known for miles out that tiie parson was a downright capital fellow.Something was to happen on the evening of this third day.In his various parochial visitations tiie new vicar had eloquently urged the more influential of ins parishioners to attend a very special meeting at the parsonage between 7 and 8 o'clock.One and all the 10 men came to tiie meeting.The time had purposely been left a little vague.Fir.-t came a wealthy sheep-owner.“Good evening, Mr.Anderson,” said the new vicar to this the reply.“There’s two minutes for you.Thirty seconds of it’s gone.” Then, with a resounding sigh, tiie big sheepowner sat down and wrote tiie check.One of Captain Murphy’s aids at this moment whistled.With scant ceremony Mr.Anderson was hustled out of tiie room into a certain yardhouse that was both strong and remote.Here he was locked in.In all 10 checks were reaped in at this compulsory offertory in the vicarage, and in all there were lu leading parishioners in the vicarage yardhouse, well immured and kept in comparative quietude by a couple of gentlemen with revolvers, who covered them from two side windows without glass, but with an iron grill to each.The 10 leading parishioners were rather wild, especially Mr.Smithson, but it was evident they were in masterful hands, and for their lives' sake they did not go beyond verbal abuse and anger."That,” said Captain Murphy, as ho looked through the sheaf of cheeks, will be £1,000 apiece, my boys, voice when he had paid her father a visit the previous day, and though she had not then put in an appearance she half suspected that something odd was in the wind.Still the denouement brought about by the slipping of Captain Murjiliy's disguise did startle her a hit.Her presence was even more of a shock to Captain Murphy, who had until now failed tore-member that she was Gaston as well as and wrapped about with sheets we tec med or sat on the cotton bales that lined the sidts of the ship’s deck.The ¦nen were all dressed in white, the smt ke stacks were painted white and in j nearer grew the great red light.It seemed to me we must run into it.I sat motionless beside Captain Iteid on a bale of cotton, watching the glowing ball of tire that loomed through the throud of mist in front, and reahztd that impending death was on either side, the visible risk of it ahead.Suddenly, and without verbal order from the captain,tiie man at the wheel turned the little craft with the alertness of hand of the magician, and she shot to the left, just outside the radius made by the beacon-light of the flagship, and between it and a great lumbering cruiser rolling about in waters half a mile i ff.As we noiselessly ran thus between the very j iws of death, Captain Iteid touehed my arm and pointed right and left.Following his directions, 1 saw on one side, within the radius a North Hatley, A Pkov qrEBEc, Canada, July Jl.t, ISlto. J Mu.Eiiitor.—During the past few days, ana smue my last, we have paid our reapeets to the City of Sherbrooke, Canada, situate twelve miles north of this place and especially noted for its extensive manufacturing establishments.There being two routes by highway we drove out by one and returned by the o her, giving ourselves tho benefit of a change of scenery.The city contains about ten thousand inhabi'ants The Magog river, being the outlet of Lake Memphremagog, furnishes a valuable water power somewhat similar to that of the Pasiaic river and falls at Paterson, New Jersey, k.ierbrooke is on elevated ground, and along the river, which at this point is in a deep chasm, are a large number of immense buildings for manufacturing purposes, chiefest among them.I believe, fur the manufacture of flannel or woolen goods of grea.t va iety in 'juaüty, texture, style and colors, for ladies wear.We were permitted to go through the Patou Manufacturing Go’s works.The Lomas works, aho quite extensive, are almost adj lining.The Patou Co.closed for the day before we left, furnishing a new and novel experience to see and look into the faces of several hundred work people, men and women, boys and girls, and children old and young, as they marched out to go to their homes The company employs between live and seven hundred.It astonished and amused us to see how soon they reached the street and open air after the bell sounded, for as the bell struck, the hum of spindles and looms ceased on the instant and out p oared the throng.The Grand Trunk, Canadian Pacific, the Host m & Maine, and Quebec Cent al pass through and center m Sherbrooke.Many of the residences are of modern style and costly.The general appearance of the city was favorable ; substantial buildings of brick and stone floe streets, giving an air of prosperity.On the way we passed through C.ipel-ton and Lennox ville.In the vicinity of these villages were copper miiies and enu-ltere, formerly employing a large, number of men.The lires now dead and the min s closed, giving those pass ing through a very faint idea of the dreariness and demlation that now re'gns throughout the mining states of the far west.Before we reached North Hatley upon our return wo were treated to an unusual electrical storm in the distance and barely escaped a drenching.For several days the fnquent showers prevented long walks and the lake was too rough f ir rowing.Beside, lake water beneath and rain water above, at the same time, are not conducive to happiness at the point of meeting.However the clouds rolled by after a while and our party took to the lake and rowed to our hearts’ content.Among other places of interest in the vicinity of the “old mill” we visited the McFarlarie Falls, the St.Francis Glen and S .Catherines Point.The scenery along the border of the lake, on either side, before and after reaching the several places mentioned is especially charming.The precipitous, almost perpendicular banks thickly covered with white birch and other trees, shrubs and evergreens, the walls of apparently gnarled rocks, all combined to make our long row pecu liarly pleasant and enj iyable and e« pecially as it was Miss B s.first experience on long distances at the oars.We have with us Jay K»y, of Washington, D.C., popular with all the guests and villagers.The name is written with the initials "J.K ” only, and this even is shortened by calling him “boy.” This is his third summer North.He excites sympathy on account if his inability to talk, being dumb but not deaf.lie makes himself understood by pantomimes, aui a gutteral sound similar to a canine whine.Mias M.K.gave us a cheerful story upon a melancholy subject, which 1 take the liberty of spreauing abroad for its novelty.A clergyman in New England, in his parochial ministrations called upon a recently bereaved family, and it is surmised did what he Could to console them for the loss of their young sou.In o.ie corner of the room he discovered an air tight glass vase, covering a piece of pie (embalmed after the manner of embalming Ü »wers) a piece bitten out—it having been the las: bite ! A more original memento is yet to be discovered.This reminded another guest that in the town of Putnam, across from Hague on Lake George, there are two quite ancient graves, though the tombstones are more recent.O.ie is erected to the memory of Dr.Ooadiah Blake, s >n of Dr.Obadiah Blake, born in Keene, Now Hampshire.* * “He was pleasant in life and in death he was not divided.” The epitaph on the stone next to this was equally lum-under-staudable.It was er.ctedto the memory of a boy of twelve, who with another boy about the same age, were playing “hanging” in a barn, and the hangman boy did not guage the time correctly, and death to the unfortunate followed.I p m his tombstone after the usual recital, follow these touching words : “His mourning mother now doth say how soon a muming sun came down at noon.” Alas, how nearly allied are mirth and sorrow, and how short the step from the sublime to the ridiculous.The reader will uo’e that 1 have made no complaint and no criticism.The weather, though occasionally execrab e, and the lake frequently obstreperous.1 have passed them by with almost un-pardonab'e silence.But the mail service is (excuse the adjective) contemptible My daily paper mailed Friday reaches me he following Tuesday morning from Brooklyn and New York.It is not occasionally, but constant.It c mid, no doubt, be remedied if an application was made by sny one who holds official position, to the proper authorities, by stating the simple facts.It may be regarded as a c miparatively trifling matter, but strangers and s j urners, coming from a distance, who are in tho habit of being served with the morning news at the breakfast table and of receiving their mails at the earliest moment p issible, and at least a half di zsn deliveries during ihe day, are not.content to wait three days more than necessary for the single mail.D is a serious objection and it may influence many, more or less, to seek rest elsewhere.However, 1 gladly pass on to mention something of a more agreeable and cheerful nature.Nonh Hatley is not a village of churches There is but one church edifice and that one is of small size, frame, and not in c miplete order externally or internally.It is known by the name of Union Church, and, as its name implies, was erected regardless of sect.Mrs Evan Thomas, Miss M.Koighter, and a few others, made some needed improvements essential to its being used for the Protestant Episcopal service.During the past year or two the Rev.Ernest A.\\V.King, M.A., a missionary in charge, has conducted the P.E , or as it is mote f.vquently called here the church t f E i gland services, and he is now making an efl'irt to secure the means for the building of a church with mure suitable up pointments.A few hundred dollars and a suitable lot have been secured by the usual methods The Misses Thomas, Miss C ;rr.Miss Williamson, Mr.T.Brown, Mr.Sch nek.Mr.H R Fraser, Mr.Goodhew and Mr Bedford gave an amateur theatrical performance in aid of the new church fund, which as a financial success exceeded expectations.The entertainment consisted of a farce in one act entitled the “Happy Pair,’ and a farce in three acts known as the “Snow Ball.” Tae piayers were enthusiastically applauded, and they, one and all, well deserved it.The improvised stage was prettily decorated and the amateurs came close upon professionals in the naturalness aud quality of acting in the several characters and parts.The Misses Thomas were complimented very highly, all the more si perhaps because they were regarded as originators of the scheme.Mr.Brown ss “Featheratone,” and Mr.Schenck as “Uncle John, ’ created much merriment.A church building, of whatever sect, is a valuable adj jnct to a village from a sordid or pecuniary standpoint, though not all, by any means, are sufficiently liberal to view it in that light.In the light of religion, the young gentlemen aud ladies who devoted so much time and labor to procure funds for so worthy an object, wiil receive praise from a higher source, and their reward from an invisible hand.V.A.For 0/er moved by Dr Austin and seconded by Drs.Pare and King and resolved “That this Association, through the Secretary, tender Dr.Meagher, of Windsor Mills, their most sincere and heartfelt sympathy in the great sflliotion which an ail wist- Providence has seen fit to visit ui>"ii him by the death of his wife on the 15 h mat.D'.Edgar moved, seconded by Dr.Smith.Tha’ par; of the fonda of ibis s desired.” After a keen discussion the scheme is postp med m order to find a suitable hall and accessories.The President then gave the annua! address, the following being a few points touched upon.“Since our first preliminary meeting on the 1-4.h Sept., 18110, we have had fi regular meetings, the first two of these, however, being taken up with framing a constitution, by laws and a tarif!' At the four last meetings no less than 13 papers on subjects of general interest were read, besides reports of unusual esses met with in practice.Many of these papers were of great interest and showed marks of much »tudy and thought in their preparation, (ijr total memb-r-ship is now 43, and as there are about 70 or "5 members of the profession in this Distric ; here r main ago! many stray slump to bring into the fold.From our Treasurer’s report it appears there is deposited to ti e credit of tins Association a sum considerably over $100, and it is a question what should be done with this money.It has been suggested by some that it be invested in books to form ti e nucleus of a libra y ; by others that it sh mld he u-ed to buy surgical instruments not usually kept by those in general practice, but which might at any time be required for special casus.I am inclined to the latter idea.1 am quite convinced that these meetings have been of much bem fit to those members who have been able to attend ; not only from a professional point of view but aiso because they have atf irded an opportunity which many of us otherwise vioiild not have had, of meeting together, making each other’s acquaintance and spending a few hours in c.cial inteicourse which in my opinion is one of the most important objects gained by these meetings.We have much to be thankful for in that death has not visited any of our members during the past year ; and that, as far as 1 know, we have escaped any serious illness or accident, though it is with much regret I hear our esteemed friend Dr Meagher of Windsor Mills has to mourn the loss of his wife, her death having taken p ace only last Sunday.It is with much plessure I am enabled to say our respected First President, Dr.E, I).Worthington, is still among us, though unable to continue his useful aud active career in the profession.” Dr.J.O.Camirand then read a paper on “Fracture of the Patella,”in which he described the different modes of treatment and apparatus used in such Cases, as well as those used by himself in the cases w hich came under his care.This is fol lowed by a discussion in which Drs.King, Powers and L.Rue take an active part.Dr.G A.Bowen, of Magog, followed with an extremely instrucive essay on “Hyetiria,” the Proteus of the medi cal faculty sod the nightmare of all practitioners.Rsmarks on this subj-ct were made by Drs.Pare, Austin, Powers, Edgar, McDonald and Camirand.“Chronic Constipation” was the sufij ‘C* chosen by Dr.Powers of Waterville.The Dr.treated this subject in a highly usefu and practical way emitting new and very pertinent ideas as to the treatment of this troublesome ailment.The following gent emen will read papers at the iiex' meeting : Dr.R A D K ng, on “Obstruction of the B iwels Dr.J.D.MoD maid,“infantile Diarrhea” Dr.F.Pure, “Cane r of the Stomach;” Dr.R.M Canfield, “Diphtheria.” The election of ofli:ers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with as follows : President.Dr.F.Pare, Sherbrooke, P. Q ;
