Ui:l1 devil Hied to separate.liy his lies and | A deeiit, he i nvailed on her to eat if the I 1 hi: forbidden fiu.t, and :.s a punishment, G ri told her that man should have dominion over her, but under tho Gospel of Christ woman is reinstated in her former rights, for Cnnst came to destroy the wotk if the devil.I wonder that a woman has ever been permitted to sit upon tho throne, because (iod said that man should have dominion over her.About the only hold we have to day is the unparalleled reign of Queen Victoria, what huin could have done better or as well ! Who when a child would not first think of Mother when wanting advice on some perplexing question '! Have you ever noticed, whqn an old couple are ripening for the grave, her intellect is nearly always clearer than his ?Your children, as they grow up ars ; are not your daughters just as intelligent ana bright as your sons (Md did not create woman with weaker intellect than man, still the reason given by some is, “they are so weak,” i say, well if that were true, that is just a reason why we should have a right to help ourselves. You have ail heard the simple ballad "Katie Lse and SVillie Grey” where he says, “l will carrot with a will, Katies basket up the hill, Katie answers with a laugh “No” but you may carry half. Now that is just our positions this afternoon, we want (o carry half, and become man’s help meet in every sense cf the world, because we believe it to be cur divine calling.God knows we feel our helplessness enough, in some of the laws we have to submit to, for instance the protection thrown around the liquor traffic. We have heard it discussed in nearly all its different phases, but it lias to much uncannineas about it, there is something new being brought to light ail the time.If there is one thing more hateful than another in connection with the license system, it is governing the number of licenses granted, 1 our innocent children.Mothers did you c i er think of this ?The law says, for every two hundre 1 and fifty persons a license may be granted. If your bab» is only a few days old and the assessor comes around, it counts one, jsst as much as the biggest drunkard, who frequents and supports these places. We look with horror upon the heathen mother, who gives her babe to appease | the wrath of her God, but (in a I Christian country,) this is nearly as bad.; Let men govern the traffic by the voters lists, or the drinking men and women, but not by our innocant children.Do you think Abraham and Sarah would have been si much rejoiced when God told them their seed should bo as the stars in the firmament, if they could have looked down through all these ages and seen, that for every two hundred and fifty a license would be granted to sell intoxicating liquor, and their daughters so oral., they would not have even a voice in the matter.Examine this traffic as you will, you see it has a mortgage on us from our cradle to the grave.1 pray God the time may soun come when it will not be so, when man will see that woman was given to him as a help meet, in this, as well as other things : To be willing to wipe out the eursed trallic, and everything else that hinders the Gcspel cf Christ, or give us the franchisa, that we may be able to blot it out ourselves.—Cold.GDIS OF JOITLAKITW SCINTILLANT SALLIES AND SMART SAYINGS OF WITTY MEN.TliN € oliimii !>«• T«* nu et! ii Joker** l*iiiru»liit»n for ü !» Murk a* Full of Pointed Nliuft* a !» I lie Armor of the I'oreii pine. The telephone girl has au extensive calling acquaintance in the most excluaive circles.—Elmira t iaz.tte.The tongue sandwich ought to have a telling effect on a man's appetite.—Boston Commercial Bulletin.Taking one's life in one s hands is not to be compared with taking her in one s arms.—Philadelphia Times.Doctor—“Your case is a bail one.Do you smoke tobacco';" Patient—“No, cigar ettes."—Philadelphia IJecord.A girl can't pick a banjo ami wash dishes. That s probably one reason why so many are picking banjos.”—Troy Press.“My wife," said Squills proudly, “is queen of the tea-table ; and she never reigns but she pours "—Drake's Magazine.Visitor—“How does the land lie out this way';" Native—“It ain't the land that lies, sir. It's the land ag-nt-e —Washington News. One could stand some men “going off in a flight of eloquence" if it would only take them out of hearing.—Cleveland Plain Dealer. The dude has his use in this world, after all.Anything is good, they say, that has a tendency to excite a hearty laugh.—Somerville Journal. She—“Now you've looked over my music, what would you like to have me play?" Hi—“Either euchre or cribbage.’’ —Chicago Inter i Vean.Criticus (looking at a picture of the im-.pressionist school)—‘ If that's high art.then I'm an idiot.' we are the toilers who are building up industries for our sisters ; we aro busy with agriculture, manufactures, and commerce, with trade-s and professions ; and must wo bo shutout from the palace of women because beauty has hod small part In our lives : And an answering thought grew and shaped itself to a policy which would take in all of tho present.Tho beautiful and precious things, the books and records, the pictures and embroiderits ; but also tho grain and the honey and the wool, tho Ihx, the dyed yarns, tho doth the cocoons, the silk threads, tho glass which women have moulded, the metals they have shaped, the garments they have made—in short, all the Industrie's woman has created, snared in, or monopolized—«ill be represented in the Woman’s Building. It will have the value of suggestion and en-ouragement, the beauty of a sisterhood of eli trt ; it will be the centre and visible sign ot a i iw impulse in the world, a reaching ou of invisible hands to clasp other io\\is.ble bands. It touches women everywhere from those of American tribes, where rudimentary and primitive manhood has seen in woman only the weaker animal, made for service and for labor, to tho nations of the East, where, in apparently never-ending slavery, a long succession of women, reselling back into unrecorded history have been unrecognized and unacknowledged in their relation to the best wjlfate of thi world. These women have been called out into the sunlight, beckoned by the hand cf a woman who stands for all that belongs to the b;st estate of woman in this most fortunate and prisperous day, and to her will be owing much of the welcome and almost unlouked-for-result.—From “A Dream City,” by Candace Wheeler in Harper's Magazine for Mag.The Walrus- HOW VAUlCS MEAT TASTES; WHAT TUB great creatures Live iron.As the walrus lay upon the ica, their immense bulk and maasive forms could be better appreciated.LieutenantSchwatka described walrus as "huge seals with upper canine-teeth prolonged into tusks." These tusks are usually from one to two feet in length, and 1 have seen some that were two and a half and even three feet long. When full grown, the tusk weighs about five pounds.Their length does not seem to be dependent upon either the age or size of the animal, as often a young, small walrus will have long tusks. The average weight of the animal is about & ton, and ours weighed between 1200 and 1500 pounds. One was ten the other thirteen feet long. They attain, however a length of from fifteen to eighteen feet, and half as much round tho fore flippers. The flippers are some two feet long, and capable, when extended, of covering a considerable arei, and of forcing the animal rapidly through the water.Walrus also use these flippers to protect wounded comrades or to carry their offspring. The inside of these paws is covered by a horney skin that serves to protect their palms in scrambling around over the rough ice.The walrus-flippers, when properly cooked, are considered a great delicacy by the Eskimos. The flavor of the flipper is very similar to that of tho coarser clams. The meat did not seem as delicate as that of the seal or nar-whale.The flash of the walrus is protected by a thick blanket of fat—the blubber, which enables it to resist the icy water of the arctic seas. This fat yields nearly a barrel of oil.The hide and tusks are valuable. The hide is used by the Eskimos to make soles for their boots, or t amiks, and it is also cut into strips for their harpoon-lines.It is from one to one and a half inches thick. The formidable tusks are used as weapons of offense and defense, and also it is stated, to gather their food the clams.—April St.Niciiolds.I»r.Wood's Norway Pino Nyrnp* Dr.Wood’s Norway syrup cures coughs colds, asthma, bronchitis, hoarseness, croup, and all diseases of the throat and lungs.Price 25:.and 50: at all druggists.COPY AVAILABLE * Coaticook.Orders for Tub Primins taken at tbe office of the Examinek, Cleveland'* Block, Cuitmg fcUect.Price* IdV’ a* good work can be done for.' yards, this week we wish to draw the attention of the authorities to the cleaning off of Webster’s corner. This seems to be the resort of all the idlers in town, and every evening, weather permitting, large numbers of them collect here much to the disgust of the public. If a lady wishes to go to the post office she must run this gauntlet and listen to the criticisms of thesa idlers as she passes. It is a public nuisance and a disgrace that this thing should be allowed in a town like Coaticook, and it is sincerely hoped that measurts will soon be taken to compel those who have no other business to take up their attention to loaf in some less conspicuous place. The MaijO'j Ne ns says : ‘The French Canadians are returning from the 1 nited States in as great numbers as they rushei into that country at the earlier part of the season.Every incoming troin of the Central Vermont railway is laden with this class of passengers. Many of them make for their old homes but of course all will take work wherever it presents itself. As a rule their means are limited. The reason they give for coming back is that no work U to be had across the lines, and that there is no other in the barn of Mr.A.H.Cutting.Cutting Street, now occupied by Mr.J.K.Brown.It spread so rapidly that before assistance reached the scene, the whole building was ablaze.Three horsea belonging to Mr.Brown were burned. Both ends of the building were said to have been in flames when the fire was first discovered, making it seem like the work of an incendiary.About eleven o’clock last Tuesday night a set of buildings owned by Mr.W.C.Webster was completely destroyed by fire. They had been vacant a few days, having been previously occupied by Mr.Lorenzj Babb. The firemen turned out in good time but through inefficient means of transportation the engine did not reach the scene of the fire at all.It originated in the him and burned until both the barn and house had fallen to the ground, the engine being in sight all the time but stuck fast in the mud.Had there been men enough present to drag both the steamer and the horses there is no doubt that it could have been brought up within reasonable time.As it was, however, after about an hour’s fruitless attempts, the horses were removed and then the engine was readily pulled out by hand.By this time the fire had abated so it was useless to proceed further. It yras with considerable difficulty and labor tha‘ the neighboring buildings were saved and had it not been that the winds were favorable doubtless greater damage would have been done. There was no insurance on the property. The New Vork World devotes over two columns to the career of Mr.A.A.McLeod, a native of Compton County, the former president of the Philadelphia and Reading railroad system and of the New York and New England railroad.Speak ing of the great achievements of this railroad king it says : “Truly no career that has ever been
