Armitage, was appointed secretary of the meeting. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The President then submitted the annual report «ff the Directors, as follows : FIFTY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT.The year ending the 31st August last has been marked by a very satisfactory increase in the business of the Company. The Deposit Notes, which form the capital of the Company, have grown from 8379,805 to 8407,444, a gain in twelve month of 827,639.The plan adopted in October, 1886, of dividing the business into two classes “Agricultural” and “Commercial,”has found great favor with the insuring public, and enables the Board to levy the assessments more equitably. The losses for the first half of tho year were, if anything, lower than the average, amounting to 86,638.06, but for the second half of the year we regret to say they were very heavy, amounting to 816,222.42, making a total of 822,860.46, rendering necessary a temporary increase in tho assessment on the Deposit Notes. This amount added to the Company’s other disbursements, the details of which appear in the annual statement, makes the amount to be provided for 834,479.46.It so happens that the losses this year have been proportionately heavier in the class represented by the “old notes,” that is, those in existence previous to the division of the business, than the other two classes. This necessitates a greater increase in the assessment upon those notes. All the losses of the year have been paid and the Company have no litigation on hand.During the year in addition to the strictly mutual business the Company has taken risks to a limited amount on tho cash premium principle, and there are now in force policies to the amount of 8107,822 in this class. The experience, so far,in this branch has not been so favorable as was ex pected, and is necessarily attended with a good deal of extra work.Your Directors, therefore, propose to discontinue, for the present, the accepting of risks on this plan, and to adhere to the strictly Mutual System. The Company continues to advance in stability and courts impartial criticism of its financial standing. In order to cover the losses and expenditure it is necessary to impose an assessment as follows, viz.: On Notes in Class A., 6 per cent ; on Notes in Class C., 12 percent., and on Notes given previous to 5th Oct., 1886, IQ per cent., distributed as follows : — A Class. C.Class.Old Notes. Sept.15th. 1 h 2 Oct.15th, | j Nov.15th, X 1 1 I liabilities, are herewith submitted.(Signed) H.B.Brown.Sherbrooke, 2ml Oct., 1889.On resolution the report as road was unanimously adopted. The President then submitted the by-law levying the assessment for the year closing the 31st of August, 1889, which on resolution was unanimously adopted. The election of the Directors for the ensuing year then took place, resulting in the re-election of the old board, after which the meeting adjourned.'
