any differences or unkindnesses, let all such be abandoned, forgiven and forgotten ; for the days are taking us as on wings to the end.Let us look at each other to-day as those who soon must part, even as we are separated from those who have gone from us, and to learn a truer love, and let us regard our work as those upon whom the last rays of the afternoon sun are falling, and so, patiently, diligently tinish our work before the night falls, for while it is gain to go and be with Christ, yet it is the end of opportunity for work in His name here.Flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God, neither can disembodied spirits do the work of the Kingdom in this world which belong!, to us to do.” We think the above contains admonition which it would be well for all to heed. What Am I To Do ?The symptoms of Biliousness are unhappily but too well known. They differ in different individuals to some extent.A Bilious man is seldom a breakfast eater.Too frequently, alast he has an excellent appetite for liquide but none for solids of a morning.Hi, tongue will hardly bare inspection as any time ; if it is not white and furreds it is rough, at all events. The digestive systen) is wholly out of order and Diarr’cea or Consumption may be a symptom or the two may alternate.The-e are often Hemorrhoids or even loss of blood. There may be giddiness and often headach, and acidity or flatulence and tenderness in the pit of the stomach. To correct all this if not effect a cure try Green's August Flower, it costs but a trifle and thousands attest its efficacy. tf Bewildered by the Tariff Question.Stephen Philpot, a dark gentleman who was at one time the most prominent ferryman on Bayou de Muckle, was appointed by the Oak Hill Conference to call upon the Governor of Mississippi and ascertain a few facts in relation to free trade.“Now, gub’ner,” said the old fellow as he covered up a spittoon with his hat, “what do it all mean, nohow ?”— “It simply means a revision of the tariff f”—“What is de tariff, gubner ?” “Why, it is the duty which the Government imposes upon certain articles which people of other nations •end here ?” “What sort o’ articles ?” “Oh, almost everything.” “Wall—er, does we need dem articles ?” “Yes.” “An we charges dem folks fur fetch-in’ us what we needs ?” “Yes.” “Wharfo ?” “Because it protects our own people.By paying more for some of those articles you help men at home, who, by means of the tariff, are enabled to sell their wares at a higher price.” “But, look yar, who pays dat higher price?” “You do.” “Wall, now, who he ps me dat er way ?Does you know o’ anybody dat is payin’ fur er artikle jess ter he’p me ?” “No, I can’t say that I do ?” "Den why is I spected to pay mo’ den er thing is wuth ?” “To keep up our industries.” “What is de industries doin’ fur du itiggah ?” “Why they keep the prices up, it is said.” “On things dat we buy ur things dat we sell ?” _ ^ “On things that we buy, I believe.” “Well, now, look yar.I’se wuss .rt den 1 wuz fo’ I came up yare.Tell youdetruf.1 doan’ belebe no man un’erstan’s dis blame bizness.”—-4r-kanmitv Tnteeller.Ahvice to Mothhks.—Areyoudis turbed at night and broken of your rest by a sick child suffering and crying with pain of Cutting Teeth ?If so send at once and get a bottle of “Mrs.Winslow’s Soothing Syrup” for Children Teething. Its value is incalculable. It will relieve the poor little sufferer immediately.Depend upon it, mothers ; 110 Wellington Street, opposite R.D.Morkill CHAPTER XIV.MISS WILDMERE’s STRATEGY.As we have seen, Madge could not resume her old relations withGraydon Muir.Indeed, the turning-point in her life had been the impulse and decision to escape them by going I away.He had intimated that she had become imbued with sentimentality and aspirations after ideals, and was Imping to meet a male embodiment of these traits, which he regarded as prominently lackadaisical. Her merry and half ironical laugh was not the natural response of a woman of the intense and .’esthetic type.“ I don’t understand her yet,” he admitted : and he again assured himself that it was not necessary that he should. The thing for him to do now was to secure the girl of his heart, who was not shrouded in mystery. It was evident that Mr.Arnault had been an urgent suitor, and that she was not already engaged to him proved,as he believed, that she had been under the influence of restraint readily explained by her more than friendly manner toward himself.“ She will have to choose between us soon,” he thought.“ She understands us both, and her heart will soon give its final verdict, if it hasjnot already done so.” Miss Wildmere’s heart would have slight voice in the verdict.Indeed, it never had been permitted to say very much, and was approaching the condition of a mute. She had her preference, however, and still hoped to be able to follow’ it'.She smiled upon Graydon almost as sweetly as ever during the next two days, but he felt that she had grown more elusive. She lured him on unmistakably, but permitted no near approach. One thing appeared hopeful to him—she seemed possessed by a carefully veiled jealousy of Madge. In his downright earnestness, he determined to give no cause for this, and treated Madge much as he did Mrs.Muir, allowing for difference in age and relation. He determined that Miss Wildmere should discover no ambiguity in his course or intentions. If thoughts of him had kept her waiting through years, he would justify those thoughts by all the means in his power.Madge felt herself neglected and partially forgotten. She saw that Miss Wildmere’s spell grew stronger upon Graydon every day.Wherever she appeared, mirth and laughter soon followed. The young girls in the house began to acknowledge her as Theatricals. On the invitation of the Sherbrooke Lawn Tennis Club, a large and fashionable audience filled the Art Rooms on Friday evening last to witness the production of a play which has been in preparation for the past few weeks. But first on the programme came a variety of musical selections.A fine pianoforte solo by Mr.J.D.Lloyd,— a song, “Of Thee I’m Thinking,” by Mr.H.R.Fraser ; a flute solo by Mr.A.F.Fraser ; a song, “To Antlxea,” excellently rendered by Miss Heneker, and finally a quartet,“A Wife’s Song” by Miss Heneker, Mrs.Morkill, M essrs.H.R.and A.F.Fraser.Then came the event of the evening, a comedy in one act, “Dying for Love,” with the scene laid at the Cadwaller Arms, Abergavenny, Wales.Amateur performances are, as a rule, the subject of a good deal of adverse criticism, but certainly the rendering of this small play was given in a manner not usually achieved by amateurs. The representation of all the characters was good.As “Mrs.Mangle” Miss Tuson was excellent.Miss Florence Hall as “Jenny,” although the part was a minor one, was very good.Mr.Ashe as “Dr.Mangle” had an exceedingly good get-up and did the unsuspecting husband in a capital manner. The parts of Captain Fiek-leton by Mr.H.R.Fraser, and that of Harry Thornton by Mr.C.B.Far-well, were both well rendered. But if we were asked to whom we should give the palm, it must be to Miss Hall who as Mrs.Lorimer filled that part to perfection, and with whose acting the most severe critic could find no fault, for she “played her part well.” We understand that a repetition of the play will take place at Lennoxville on Saturday evening next for the benefit of Bishop’s College Wing.Wolves at the Boundary.Hunters and fishermen frequently run across unexpected finds, and traces of those who have been there before. It will be news to many who hunt the forests along the boundary chronicle the death of the Rev.C.P.Reid, D.D., for thirty years rector of St.Peter's Church in this city. His death which took place on Friday,|()ct.26, 1888.Itwasnotun-looked for, as he h id been ailing for seven or eight months.At.the last he passed away quietly and peacefully without a struggle. It is hardly necessary to say those who knew him that all through his illness, and especially as he neared his end, his soul was sustained by the religious faith and hope which had so signally characterised his life.“I do not care to think or speak of anythin" but Heaven and God,” he said, two or three days before his death. And after death the smile that rested on the beloved features spoke of the joy of those last moments when God kissed away his soul in peace. It may not be out of place here to give a brief sketch of his career. The Rev.Charles Peter Reid was born in Cornwall, Ont., on the 14th August, 1811.He was the eldest son of the Rev.James Reid, D.D., for fifty years rector of Trinity Church, Frelighs-burg.After the usual preliminary studies, he took his Divinity course at the Theological Seminary at Cham-bly, at which the late Rev.J.Braithwaite, M.A., was the principal. He was admitted to the Diaconate by the Right Reverend Dr.Stewart, Bishop of Quebec, on the 23rd June, 1835, and to the Priesthood at the first ordination held by the Right Rev.Dr.Mountain, Bishop of Quebec, on the 1st November, 1836.His first mission after his ordination was Rawdon, in the present diocese of Montreal, where he remained only a short time.He removed from Rawdon to St, Johns as Curate to the Rev.D.Baldwin, and missionary at Laprairie, While at St.Johns he was married to Julia Gray, eldest daughter of John Gray, of Her Majesty’s Customs. After this he did mission work for a time in the Township of Bury.He then removed to Compton, where he remained fourteen years, building two churches, and organizing the work of the mission on a secure basis. On the first of April, 1854, he was appointed to the parish of Sherbrooke, of which he continued rector until 1883.During his long tenure of office the Church under his charge grew into a strong and flourishing one, and he was identified with almost every good work of a public nature in the town.He held the office of Rural Dean of the district of St.Francis for many years, only resigning in consequence of the infirmities of age. Both by active interest and by liberal donations he helped to support various charitable institutions.Bishop College, Lennoxville, is epecially indebted to him, and was very near his heart. He was a trustee of the College from its foundation in 1843.He received from the University the Honorary degree ot M.A.in 1855, and that of D.C.L.in 1884.A Scholarship, valued at $80 per annum, and bearing his name, attests to day th e practical nature of his interest'!n the educational work of tho Church. There were few figures more widely known, and few names more universally beloved throughout the District of St.Francis than those of Dr.Reid.The funeral services were held in St.Peter’s on the morning of the 29th, ai d weie very largely attended by the clergy and laity of al' denominations The Venerable Archdeacon Roe, D.D., the Rev.Professor Scarth, M.A., the Rev.G.H.Parker, and tho Rev.Geo.'1 horneloe, Rector of the parish, took part. The following clergy were also present in the chancel.Rev.Principil Adams, D C.L., Rev.J.b.B.Allnatt, D.D., Rev.Professor Watkins, M.A., Rev.Canon Davidson, M.A., of Frtlighsburg ; Rev.C.B.Washer, Rev.A.Stevens, M.A., R.v.James Hepburn, M.A., Rev.W.T.Forsythe, Rev.Thomas Chapman, M.A., and Rev.R.J.Fother-gill.The coffin was placed in the Choir at the entrance to tiie sanctuary. The procession from the church to the cemetery was headed by the clergy in surplices, then followed the bearers and the hearse ; the mourners ; wardens of the parish ; old friends ; the masons in a body ; Bishop’s College students in cap and gown ; friends and acquaintances. At the grave, after the church services were over, the Masons, of whose society Dr.Reid wras an honored member, passed by in order, casting the symbolic evergreen upon all that was mortal of their departed friend and brother. And there in a beautiful and retired corner, overshadowed by trees and looking out toward the sun rising, over the river and valley of the lovely St.Francis far below, the faithful husband and father and friend, the-devoted Priest of God s Holy Church, finds his last earthly resting place, waiting ‘•Till the RrBurrection Day.’1 The Rev.Dr.Roe preached an impressive memorial sermon Sunday last atliit.Peter’s Church to a large congregation. The late clergyman was among those who volunteered to go down to Grosse Isle, during the ship fever some thirty-live years ago, to lend illiquid that was so much needed during the scenes of that terrible pestilence. In his death the city may be said to have lost a wise and prudent counsellor, whose memory will long be cherished. He lias entered into his well earned rest.Danville- I hope you will find room for our Danville items in the current issue after this.Several
