Tardif said that he found those people in Louis Charland and Katriu^ Lafaille, two individuals who have, with a volunteer team, put together a full-scale weekend event to take place between 3 p.m.Friday and 2 p.m.on the Sunday of the second weekend in June.Charland called the fairgrounds an ideal site, and explaining that the goal is to create a “happening,” that will grow and repeat year after year. The rodeo’s mission statement highlights that notion, ex- pressing that the goal of the rodeo is to create an event which brings together amateur and professional horsemen, country music, local products, and rodeo aficionados to create a positive economic return for the region, boost local tourism in the middle of a little municipality, and generally entertain the local population.According to Charland, the rodeo will be the only event of its kind within a 100 km radius, and the organizing team is expecting as many as 10,000 visitors.Lafaille outlined the programming for the event briefly.Aside from two professional rodeo presentations, the week- end will include two gourmet meals, a spaghetti supper and a méchoui, as well as horse pulls and skills competitions, dance lessons, family activities, artisan’s tables, lawn tractor races, and musical performances by both local favourites.Slightly Haggard, and Canadian Country Music Award winner Aaron Pritchett.“It will be an event not to be missed in the region,” Tardif said.Ayer’s Cliff Mayor Alec van Zuiden said that the event was an, “absolutely phenomenal” contribution to the community.“It ensures that we remain on the map,” van Zuiden said, “we’re going on 170 years with the Stanstead County Agricultural society, the fair, and that’s great for that weekend, but what about the rest of the time?” Van Zuiden praised the way that the rodeo caters to a different audience, and the ways that its organizers have invested in the community as a whole.“It speaks to us on a visceral level,” the mayor said, “and I think it is absolutely phenomenal.” Tickets and weekend passes are now available for presale on the rodeo’s website: http://www.rodeoayersclifT.com/ A percentage of the money from ticket sales moments in her business that allowed her to develop her business sense.“All of our participants last year confirmed that they would come back to such an event again. There is a necessity for this kind of activity for local business women,” said Ashby, highlighting the fact that this year’s conference will also feature talks by novice entrepreneurs who, despite their recent starts, are employing strategies that may lead to greater success in the future.“This conference represents an excellent chance to develop and sharpen our tool kits,” said Compagna, “It is an excellent investment in yourself.” The conference will also feature presentations by Anne Marcotte and Frank Nicolas in themes ranging from making a difference to prospering as an entrepreneur. The complete programming is million expansion project that will see the floor space at the company’s Merrill St.location grow by 50,000 sq.ft.The expansion will go to solving the company’s storage and production issues. The project will almost double the company’s available floor space.According to company manager Daniel Boisvert, the investment is worth it.“For the moment, we are dealing with a rather limited manu- facturing space and storage area. The new surface will allow us to arrange our equipment to get a better flow.We want our pipe to begin the process at one end and have it come out the other.Currently, we have to go through several work stations before culminating in the final product.” Often associated with hoses used by firefighters, the company also produces more specialized equipment.Recently, Niedner introduced a pipe, 12 inches in diameter, mainly used by oil companies in Western Canada. This giant item takes a lot of space.“Often, it is necessary to store things outdoors. We even created a temporary assembly line in a large tempo shelter. It costs us $1.5 million in heating every year,” Boisvert says.Support from the Town of Coaticook weighed heavily when it came time to make a decision about expansion.“We seriously looked at several options, including the southern United States, a place that can be more strategic because of its proximity to our customers. However, the Municipality has been behind us 200 per cent.It was decided to invest in our centre of excellence here.We will continue our research and the development of new products in Coaticook,” he added.Sod for the project will be turned in June.Company executives believe the expansion will add thirty new jobs to the current 127 over the next three years.Boisvert says that 80 per cent of its workforce comes from the Coaticook Valley.“We would now like to attract professionals from here.I think we have the tools necessary to achieve that goal.” The new addition is expected to be operational in December.Magog mayor to potential railway owner: we want tracks out of our town The Canadian Press A community still recovering from a fiery train disaster says it has made it clear to the railroad’s potential new owner that it wants the tracks out of town.A Lac-Megantic town official says Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche delivered the message this week during her first meeting with a representative for Fortress Investment Group, the winning bidder for the insolvent Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway. The MMA is the railroad at the centre of last July’s derailment that saw tank cars carrying volatile crude oil explode in downtown Lac-Megantic, killing 47 people. The Lac-Megantic official says the mayor also made it clear during her “positive” exchange with Fortress consultant John Giles on Monday that locals no longer want crude oil transported through the middle of the community. The official, who did not want to be named, says Giles informed Roy-Laroche he was in an information-gathering phase because Fortress was still unsure it wanted to go through with the MMA purchase.Train service in railroad-dependent Lac-Megantic restarted in December and the MMA agreed not to transport dangerous goods through the town.At the time, Roy-Laroche said she had participated in discussions to see whether the tracks could eventually be re-routed outside of downtown Lac-Megantic.The Lac-Megantic official also said Giles told the mayor a considerable amount of investment would be needed to improve the MMA’s worn railroad network. The Maine-based Bangor Daily News reported that Giles called his meeting with Roy-Laroche “very productive.” Giles did not respond Wednesday to an interview request sent by The Canadian Press. The newspaper has also reported that Fortress plans to change the MMA’s name to the Central Maine and Quebec Railway once the sale is finalized.Last month.Fortress subsidiary Railroad Acquisition Holdings LLC secured a winning bid for the bankrupt MMA, which operates about 770 kilometres of track in Maine, Vermont and Quebec.Sherbrooke lawyer found guilty of tax fraud Sherbrooke Sherbrooke lawyer Marco Pierre Caza has been convicted of making false or misleading tax returns Caza’s personal residence on London. In the decision rendered Tuesday in Sherbrooke, Judge Erick Vanchestein of the Court of Québec said that after analyzing Caza's testimony and the rest of the evidence presented, he found, “that the testimony of the accused is not credible and the evidence shows beyond a reasonable doubt that he intentionally submitted false statements for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 with the intent to deceive the tax collector and to evade payment of taxes.” Caza filed a claim for $122,522 for real estate company Caza Gagnon Immeubles (CGI) as expenses that permitted Caza to evade a total of $17,322 in taxes.“That the accused is a lawyer must be considered as an aggravating factor,” said prosecutor Josée Pratte, who added that she has yet to decide what penalty she will ask to be imposed at Caza’s sentencing, scheduled for April 8.The minimum penalty may range from 50 to 200 per cent of the tax evaded and the maximum sentence is up to two years imprisonment, but Pratte added that as a first offence, Caza's would not merit the maximum.Caza specializes in civil and immigration law.He is involved in various companies and sits on several boards of directors. At the time of the offences, Caza admitted at trial that all contractors who did the work billed CGI although they hadn’t done any work for the company.“The Court considers that the Caza’s used a classic ploy to charge personal expenses to the company and to try to hide it from the tax authorities,” Vanchestein wrote, adding that in his testimony, the accused was, “still trying time is not a factor in such interventions, even if police had to block off Sherbrooke’s main artery for twelve hours and that thousands of dollars were spent time during the operation.“Time often favours police in these kinds of situations,” Labbé said.“Since we were in contact with him, there was no need to use violence. We have three priorities - to preserve the life of the individual, to intervene in the safest way possible, and to protect the surrounding area. This individual resisted to the end.He had Molotov cocktails in his possession and the police used pepper spray. We had to use a taser to subdue him.The 41-year old man, previously unknown to police, had also installed metal bars across his doorway so that nobody could ‘get at him,’ and this made breaking down the door extremely prob- lematic for police,” says the Chief.“We try to do the best job possible in this context. For a number of years we have been calling for support in mental health. These concerns have been expressed on numerous occasions within the Association of Chiefs of Police. This has been a significant problem in Quebec since we began talking about deinstitutionalization,” the Chief says.Wednesday’s siege is just one example of situations that have escalated with people struggling with mental health problems and Labbé emphasized that collaboration between his men and Sherbrooke firefighters avoided the worst.Once evaluated by doctors, the man will be brought to Sherbrooke courthouse where he will potentially face numerous criminal charges, including arson, uttering death threats to police, damage to property, and public endan-germent, among others.Scientists raise alarm over plastic additives Sherbrooke Chemicals in everyday household items pose a serious risk to pregnant women and their fetuses, according to a study released by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Université de Sherbrooke. The study focuses on polybromi-nated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) a plastic additive found in computers, tablets, electric wires, polyesters, and car interiors.PBDEs are associated with a decrease in thyroid hormones, which is in turn linked to numerous health problems, notably attention deficit disorder, anxiety, and some learning disabilities. The study found that these chemicals are released into the air when heated and bind to dust in the air.Alarmed by the toxic effects of these substances on pregnant animals, pediatric researcher Larissa Takser initiated, in 2007, an ambitious study on 800 pregnant women in the Eastern Townships examining the effect of PDBEs in thyroid activity.PBDEs are endocrine disruptors, says Professor Takser, and are capable of interacting with the hormone naturally produced by the body.In the study, Takser and her team looked at the effects of PBDEs on thyroid hormones.Blood samples collected suggest that PBDEs produce an impact on thyroid gland hormone production, resulting in a decline of hormones in both mother and baby that can have unfortunate effects on the developing fetus. The hormones secreted by the thyroid gland have a stimulatory effect on all body functions and are essential to the growth and maturation of the skeleton and nervous system, particularly brain development.Unlike other contaminants, whose impacts on the body increase with dosage, endocrine disruptors are active at very small doses.PBDEs are similar in molecular structure to thyroid hormones and PCBs.The latter were banned in the 70s because of their high toxicity.PBDEs, like PCBs, are persistent contaminants when introduced into the body. They accumulate and remain there for several years. In the United States, concentrations of PBDEs found in the blood plasma of pregnant women are 20 to 100 times higher than those found in mothers in Sweden.Of all pregnant women in the world, Americans and Canadians are the most exposed to PBDEs as is demonstrated by the increase in PBDE levels found in the breast milk of Canadian and American women over the past few decades, that double every five years. The Record j newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Friday, February 28, 2014 Page 5 ° / ummst Loss of respect and loss of influence does not absolve the Church of responsibility to speak the truth.him., .,,, -^.Has the Catholic Church become a tamed tiger?Steven Black The woeful condition of the Roman Catholic Church in Quebec is evidenced by its inability to influence the behaviour of Quebecers or the legislation of the government and its unwillingness to try.To be sure there are relics of the Church’s powerful past everywhere but many of the churches and seminaries and the like are largely empty.Hospitals and schools which once sought to uphold health and education in the name of God now are instruments of the State. This State is successfully squeezing what remains of respect for the church and its values out of the public’s consciousness. In fact, much that remains of public consciousness for the Catholic Church is disdain.A lot of this can be attributed to the Church’s woeful legacy of its abuse of people and power, of course. While these failures have come to light there has also been a dramatic shift in the underpinnings of morality from religious conviction to the assumption that values and behaviours are entirely a matter of individual preference.Self has become the final authority, we believe.Authority of any kind from institutions like the Church is undermined even in schools where values education promotes a kind of tolerance that means anything goes except disapproval.Ironically we can safely champion disapproval of disapproval should anyone or anything stand in the way of personal choice. These things put the Catholic Church in a bind.Already struggling to maintain the loyalty of an aging and shrinking base, when it seeks to promote its own doctrines or insist that the faithful Catholic should follow its principles it risks alienating people even more.Recently Cardinal Gerald Cyprien Lacroix spoke out against the Charter of Values.I’m happy to see this too.I’ve been wondering when the Church would finally say something - but the results are disappointing. At one time this kind of public statement would have had massive influence on Quebecers. This time there seems to be hardly any effect at all.I haven’t even seen or heard push back against the statement of the kind where voices would indignantly insist that the Church should mind its own business and stay out of the State’s bedroom. That such a statement from a Cardinal results in nary a ripple gives proof that the Church has become a toothless tiger.Of course this has been the case for many years.See the way many traditional Catholics ignore the Church’s position on sexuality, marriage and divorce. Moreover, the broad acceptance of abortion and now the relative ease with which Euthanasia will soon become one of the health services our State will provide demonstrates the Church’s impotency. To add insult to fatal injury, the PQ and other non-practicing Catholics will still use symbols of faith such as crosses and crucifixes as valued historical leftovers to promote its own anti-Catholic agenda. That the cross should be used to champion secularity is such a strange twist on reality that we ought all to be troubled. That few are troubled just proves the marginalization of the Church.More baffling to me is that the Church seems to have remained pretty quiet over this cynical abuse of its own sacred symbols. It doesn’t even appear to want to fight at all.Rather, it appears that it believes that if it remains silent through the growth of secularization and the loss of fundamental freedoms maybe there will still be a few people to support it on the other side of this dark period.Have we so quickly forgotten the terrible legacy of the Church’s simpering silence with the rise of other unjust States? Is this what the Church has become? Is it now a toothless old tiger being led about compliantly by its secular handlers?Loss of respect and loss of influence does not absolve the Church of responsibility to speak the truth clearly and un-apologetically when error and evil emerge. It is hard to respect a tamed tiger when it acts like a domestic house cat.Challah Baking at Chabad of Sherbrooke COURTESY PHOTO Challah is the traditional Jewish bread eaten on the Sabbath and Jewish Holidays. On Monday, Feb.24, the Chabad Jewish Community Centre All direct and indirect spending on energy amount to over $65 billion.God knows how much of that is wasted in an inefficient manner.Energy for Quebec: follow the money François Tanguay Avery important and provocative report came out this week.Even though it had been a government mandate at the outset, it took a leak to Le Devoir for ‘Maitriser Notre Avenir Énergétique,’ (Mastering Our Future Energy) to be made public. That’s two strikes on the PQ_ administration in one short week, since just last week, the final report on the Strategic Environmental Assessment on shale gas was hastily made public after a leaked copy had also reached Le Devoir. It seems obvious that the Marois government did not want these two important reports be made public for now. Both are dated from January! Why all this holding back on critical evaluations of our energy future?Well, maybe because the numbers are too eloquent. In both reports there are hard facts that, for some reason, the PQ.people prefer not be at the forefront of the upcoming electoral campaign.Too late.In the most recent report, written by a highly credible team that includes long time Hydro-Quebec expert Roger Lanoue, the grand scheme of our energy future is shaken from the pedestal of the ever expanding dogma: build it and we will justify it! The report draws a very different picture of our energy pie and what is does to our fragile economy. The total collective energy bill for Quebec is huge. Each year, we buy $12 billion in electricity, $2 billon in natural gas, $18 billion in oil and another $2 billion in various petrolium products. In all $34 billion just to buy energy! Then, as an obvious consequence, every year we also buy $12 billion in cars. The government spends $18 bil- lion, on top of the dedicated taxes from gas sales, on roads and infrastructures. Some money goes to public transit too.We also renovate our buildings and houses. In the end all direct and indirect spending on energy amount to over $65 billion.God knows how much of that is wasted in an inefficient manner.Somehow we are short on money for schools, hospitals and care for the elders.Funds for public transport are mere ‘peanuts’ compared to this energy related spending spree. What fascinates me is that just about all of the goods we consume are undertaxed and the main culprit, as far as I’m concerned, is cheap energy. As a consequence waste remains a way of life that has little or no cost, so it seems.Everything we consume is taxed the same 14,5 per cent, regardless of its usefulness.Meanwhile our wages can be sucked out by as much as 45 per cent for income tax purposes.Maybe we are taxing the wrong items.Maybe we are looking at our taxation system from the wrong end of the binoculars! Why not leave most of the money we earn in our pockets and then use varying levels of taxes, depending on if what we purchase is a necessity or a luxury, to balance our budget? No taxes on food and a 35 per cent fee on cars and perfume, for example.Electric cars less taxed than Hummers! This is the way most of Europe functions, by the way.On top of that, all sources of energy should be more expensive, backed by support for the poor, in the case of electricity for heating for example. We should contemplate a serious tax reform that would make a difference between ‘nice to have’ and ‘need to have.’ Basics versus luxuries. Our economy is in a jam, and the management of our energy needs should be at the core of a major change of vision.Business as usual is not an option. The coming election campaign would be a good time as any to think outside the box, as it is often said, and for once free ourselves from the economical cul de sac we are in.Time to get creative.RECORD 1195 Galt East Sherbrooke, Quebec JIG 1Y7 Fax: 819-821-3179 e-mail: newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com Website: www.sherbrookerecord.com Sharon McCully Publisher .(819) 569-9511 Daniel Coulombe News Editor .(819) 569-6345 Stephen Blake Corresp.Editor .(819) 569-6345 Serge Gagnon Chief Pressman.(819) 569-9931 DEPARTMENT’S Accounting .Advertising .Circulation .Newsroom .(819) 569-9511 .(819) 569-9525 .(819) 569-9528 .(819) 569-6345 Knowlton office 5B Victoria Street, Knowlton, Quebec, JOE 1 VO Tel: (450) 242-1188 Fax: (450) 243-5155 PRINT SUBSCRIPTIONS GST PST TOTAL Quebec: l year 120.00 6.00 11.97 S13 7.9 7 6 months 63.00 3.15 6.28 S72.43 3 MONTHS 32.00 1.60 3.19 S3 6.7 9 ON-LINE SUBSCRIPTIONS Quebec: 1 year 55.00 2.75 5.49 S 6 3.2 4 1 month 4.99 0.25 0.50 S 5.7 4 Rates for out of Quebec and for other services available on request. The Record is published daily Monday to Friday.Back copies of The Record are available. The Record was founded on February 9.1897, and acquired the Sherbrooke Examiner (est.1879) in 1905 and the Sherbrooke Gazette (est.1837) in 1908.The Record is published by Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership.PM#0040007682 Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to The Record, 1195 Galt East, Sherbrooke, QC JIG 1Y7 Member ABC, CARD, CNA, QCNA Letters Dear Editor I note once again with interest the discussions at Lennoxville council re.the Huntingville dam. Most recently David Price correctly pointed out that Boralex is free from any efforts by Lennoxville /Sherbrooke to intervene: but did not point out that the dam is not in Sherbrooke. The north end of the dam only touches on Sherbrooke just as the south end only touches on Waterville.I was part of the Ascot rural residents group which sought to negotiate new homes for our rural area in the early nineties. Then Mayor Price with the support and encouragement of the Quebec government sought and obtained the edge of the river as a boundary; similarly Waterville acquired the territory up to the south bank. This puts the dam just like the bridge between the two solely under control of Quebec. For nearly 30 years I have been active in historic and heritage matters, locally, provincially and nationally and have gained a good awareness of what is deemed of value and what is not.Unfortunately the present dam dates only from the mid 40’s having been rebuilt following the flood of ‘43 which wiped out the old log dam and the covered bridge, events I remember well.So as far as Quebec is concerned the dam has no historic or heritage value, only the general site itself. That's not enough to get them involved As far as environmental and flood control matters are concerned, after the 40’s floods the government dredged downstream and built heightened stone embankments to protect the farm properties from downcoming ice or trees but not from the backup of the Massawippi, as operators of the Beaulieu farm well know.Dear Editor Advisory committees appointed b the Quebec government believe tha institutions should move toward palliative care and the maintenance o quality of life.According to what one cai read in newspapers these days, increas ingly heavy client burdens are leadinj CHSLDs to consider becoming end of lifi residences. The focus is set on clients wh( have only a few months left to live.As a result, we should ask this ques tion: What will happen to people witl severe physical disabilities in Shei brooke and the region? Not so lonj ago, after an influx of patients, CLSC began sending many people with se vere physical disabilities back into in stitutions, due to a lack of resources. In several other cities in Quebec, ; formula has been adopted and devel oped to accommodate those with se vere physical disabilities. These an people whose needs for homecare ex ceed the number of hours granted b the CLSC.Through projects called “res idential islands," a dozen or so tenant are housed together in an apartmen block. There is a further liability against efforts to protect the dam, that being an increasingly powerful movement across the USA to have as many as possible of these local dams destroyed to reestablish the free flow of the rivers and reopen the migratory pathways of anadromous fish including salmon and shad.Until all the dam building took place in the 1800’s our river was a good salmon river and was so named. It could be again as efforts on similar rivers in the USA have demonstrated as well as cleaning out the silt buildup which came with these dams Downriver builders of the papermill dams on the St Francis promised to build fishways around the barriers, promises which were never fulfilled nor enforced.Like many I hold strong identity with the dam and its picturesque effect on my lifelong favourite village.I am one of the few left who can recall sitting in the Huntingville school on warm spring and fall days and hearing the water and the sawmill it empowered.I would be sorry to see it lost.As a founding member of Patrimoine Heritage Huntingville I have regularly felt disappointment at the lack of community support for our historic church, a true historic gem, rated by the Quebec Ministry of culture as the most historically significant church structure in the entire Estrie region.Built in 1845 and opened in January 1846 it predates the dam by a hundred years and reflects the identities of the people of the early community. It too, is picturesque, probably appearing on fewer touristy web shots but eloquent in what it says to the world.I commend the locals who wish to save something picturesque but to do so would require finding new arguments.Richard Evans PHHI Waterville Inside the living areas, two special rooms are reserved, one for employees and the other for a mini cafeteria.Since living only in a bedroom is not a good way of life, each resident has a 3 1/2- room, fully accessible apartment.Once there, residents can count on a staff ready to meet their personal needs. This service is described as ‘light,’ as opposed to intense’ and is available 24/7, provided by three qualified employees during the day and a security guard at night.Along with the regular array of health care, an appropriate level of service, independence, and privacy are assured at a low cost. For the physically disabled person, an apartment in a normal environment is preferred, the “residential island” formula provides an alternative to those suffering from severe physical impairment, particularly those seeking autonomy over their daily lives. In some places the experience goes even further and users themselves manage the building and staff. This type of residence should be built here in Sherbrooke.Maurice Richard Sherbrooke ¦i Newcomer Cole Swindell makes a name for himself .11111 llllll! Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture February 28 - March 6, 2014 Country Connection Jessie Aulis Cole Swindell has taken the world of country music by storm with his smash debut single “Chillin’ It.” His self-titled debut album was released last week and it is currently sitting at No.1 on the ilunes Top Albums chart. With always the four or five male artists currently dominating the scene as well as the charts, it’s hard to think that someone could crash the party to make a name for himself.Newcomer Cole Swindell has done just that.He started by touring with fellow Georgia Southern Luke Bryan, he was originally selling Bryan’s merchandise before signing his own publishing deal and opening for the country singer.Swindell ranks there with the Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line and others who all offer the same style of music. It is a mix of pop musi-cality with a dab of country.Swindell’s first single released, “Chillin’ It,” was produced by Jody Stevens, who is the son of songwriter and producer Jeff Stevens.Stevens also performed all the instruments on that track.Luke Bryan’s guitarist Michael Carter produced the rest of the album.Indeed, Swindell has already earned a spot among country’s top artists.Upon first listen, audiences are sure to notice how similar his sound is to .the mainstream artists mentioned above.Swindell often collaborates and tours with the artists, writing some of country’s current hits with them.“Chillin’ It,” “Brought To You By Beer” and “Get Up” are reminders of Luke Bryan’s many Spring Break albums with fun and easygoing vibes. You also may recognize Swindell’s name because he penned some songs that are different for other artists like Craig Campbell, Thomas Rhett, and Scotty McCreery.Cole Swindell has pure talent, whether it is with his songwriting, or his vocals.Providing he drops the pop/country style, he has what it takes to stay around for the long haul.On this new album, there are lots of songs about drinking and partying out in the country.Swindell claims co-writer credits on all but one of the album’s songs. There isn’t much variety between the album’s twelve tracks.Every song is either about drinking, partying, or working hard at a job. Each song is great by itself but as a whole, it is kind of repetitive.“Swayin’” is about going to a concert, where you get stuck in the back because the tickets are so expensive, but who cares because you just want to hear the music? This will become a great number for his live concert.Fans will relate. But the singer/songwriter also proves that he’s got more depth than the country pop he’s been labelled under. With “Ain’t Worth The Whiskey,” Swindell gives listeners the perfect song as he lists all the things worth drinking to.But his ex-lover girl ain’t one of them.Another number, “I Just Want You,” showcases his more romantic side.I know that the ladies will just love it.Swindell also pays tribute to all the good ole boys with songs like “Down Home Boys” and “The Back Roads and The Back Row," with a nod to his own Georgia roots. Then comes the sad but sweet “Dozen Roses and a Six Pack.” As he croons over H 1 x- •: x: : • a love that might be lost, Swindell shows that he can, if he wants it become a Country Music star.He is good at writing sweet and powerful country ballads, and great to deliver them.“I got a dozen roses if she comes back home / And a six-pack if she don’t,” he sings in a very traditional chorus. In the same style, there’s the heartfelt plea, of “I Just Want You.” This is the hidden side of Swindell that has written hits like Craig Campbell’s “Outta My Head” and Thomas Rhett’s “Get Me Some of That.” That’s the proof that he could leave the pop/country to others.Cole Swindell grew up in Bronwood, Georgia and also graduated from Georgia Southern University in 2007.Fresh out of college, Swindell started selling merchandise on the road for fellow Georgia native Luke Bryan. In 2010 Cole signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and in 2013 released “Chillin’ It,” which climbed the Country Music charts.Cole Swindell currently is opening up for Luke Bryan on his That’s My Kinda Night 2014 Tour.Spring Cleaning is just around the corner and our fourth annual bottle drive to benefit the Pet Connection will take place in the spring instead of the fall.If you are doing some cleaning and wish to donate your empty cans and bottles, please contact Cathy at 819-437-5072.It would truly be nice to get a head start! All stories are sad if you let them go on ong enough, I told him, but I took the case ust the same.He had applied and been re-ectedfrom the Force more than a dozen times •etween 1878 and 1880."And now he hangs around the corridors niffing loudly and declaring himself the reatest detective in the world," Lestrade said. That excerpt is from a series of diary ntries written by a Dr.Watson about an ddled cocaine addict, published earlier WHITE FIRE niv '; i:*raw** S’CHILD this month at a website called The-Toast.net.Book publishers have long been distrustful of fan fiction. It features characters owned by others, yet their inventions are so beloved that regular folk spend hours creating stories in homage (and some of them are even quite good). Many authors and corporations consider fan fiction to be theft; in turn, those who indulge point out that it’s a non-profit endeavour, a gift, that drives people to buy into more and more of the official product, leading to more money and notoriety for the owners. That argument aside — and it’s a controversial one — modern copyright law, it should be noted, is riddled with oddness. It is perfectly legal to write tales which feature Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself, who died in 1930.Until three months ago, however, following a complex court case, it was essentially impossible in the United States to write a story which mentioned the fictional Sherlock Holmes (unless permission was formally granted and lots of cash changed hands). There’s a time limit on copyright, of course, but the ever-litigious Doyle estate argued that the character of Holmes was created by the entirety of its author’s output, so that no modern story could be published commercially without a licence until copyright had expired on the very last Holmes tale, rather than on the first. It takes money and lawyers to argue against such obstinacy. But in December, a judge finally ruled that position to be ridiculous, and that the early Holmes works are in the public domain in the Sherlock Holmes battles a master criminal.United States.About 10 stories are still under copyright, and so whichever Holmesian eccentricities were introduced in those tales are still verboten for fans to mention in commercial works.Best-selling American crime writers Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child Cont’d on page 14 Your week on TV WEEKDAY MORNING KVCAX O ________- AIPTZ Q -____- 5BMT Q 206 301 Channel 3 News Morning CBS Thi s Morniru Newschannel 5 Today at 6AM CBC News Now Today :hlt a to?718 F Salut, bonjour!
