commissioner Wood, of Washington, has succeeded in effecting the release of over one hundred Union prisoners at Salisbury, N.C., and expects to have them at Aiken’s Landing the latter part of this week. The John A.Warner, in charge of Major Schenck, will probably be at Aiken’s Landing to morrow to receive them. The Richmond Enquirer of tire 20th says that despatches transpiring with the War Department state nothing more than that Bragg had fallen back from his fo me- position a distance of 40 miles, for the purpose of securing subsistence. The combination of the Fédérais having been strongly reinforced, rendered this move absolutely necessary. It is surmised that Rosencranz had commenced a strategic movement to form a junction with Beull, and cut off our artpy entirely. We have nothing new from the army of the Potomac. The enemy's cavalry have renewed their raids in Farqrrar, and on Saturday visited Bristow Sta lion, on the Orange and Alexandria railroad, they also visited Warrenton again in considerable force.A train raden tyith railroad stuff narrowly escaped being captured at Bristow.Five hundred paroled Union prisoners were sent down to Vienna yesterday for exchange. The Enquirer of the 21st says :—The last we heard of Bragg's army he was at London, Ey., falling back in order toward Cumberland Gap.Buell has a very large army, and attempted to flank Bragg while'at Camp Pick Robinson, which was prevented by this rstreat.Bu.e.1 ig yet endeavouring to flank him, and there may be a battle any day.-.The report of taking a large number of prisoners at Perry viile proves untrue. We have reports from Winchester that a portion of our army are advancing on to Charles-I town, Va., which is occupied by the enemy in ! fore/5, We scarcely think that Charlestown will fce thp tbpatre of any great battle.A skirmish jrap oppurred at Warrenton and anoLV* at Kernstown within thg past few days.General KuSb, who at present corpnian^s the forces in the Kanawha Valley, has issued an order urging farmers to come to Kanawha for salt and bring forage for the army. The attention of the people Is ,called to tbp above, to comply with the requests of Gen Rehab, aa.ii nt the same time to promote individual comfort. We learn from Jackson, Miss,, that the bridge across Cyphres Creek, was burned by the ene- i mj’, and our forces were not aware of its ties- ; traction till the3’ arrived at the Creek. On their retreat they were then forced to run down tire Creek and cross at the railidam, where the enemy had a c.orijiranding position. The slaughter of our troops at this point was very heav}’.The oversight consisted in the neglect to destroy the railroad leading from Corinth te Golgmbus and Cairo, which enabled the Fédérais to run in re-i emits furring the entire night previous to the retreat. On the 15th inst.the Go/ttmodore rah aground above the city point .and detained tjjp John.A.Warner om day to tow her off.In justice to is reported there that a fight is in progress at Island No.16, There are probabilities that this report is true Hincks’ notes, which he says were received for duties, stayed out quite long enough, or were reissued often enough, to answer every purpose. It is quite true, as he says, that these notes were once at a large discount ; but it is equally true that people shrewd enough to bay them turned a good penny by it, and that they ought never to have been at a discount at all.At the time the Montreal Herald was where the Journal de Quebec is at present—in opposition—but we did not think it necessary to ran down a perfectly sound security.Alone, we believe, of tire papers of the same political predilections, we expressed the opinion that the “shin-plasters,” as they were called, were very well worth their nominal value in any currency whatever.Mr.Hincks expressed his thanks for our assistance to him, though an opponent, in a perfectly legitimate transac ion ; and there were others who refused to lose their money by accepting the discount to which the notes were run down by pure political clamour, who had reason to thank us too.We are quite satisfied that the new notes will have just as good a claim as those issued iu 1849, to stand at their par value—that is, if no ruinous plans arc adopted to depress the entire credit of the country. If there be, these promises to pay must suffer with the rest.Ixceease to TH3 Gaurison.—We understand that preparations are being made by the military authorities for the accommodation of more troops A battery Dorchester Street, near Amherst street, and endeavoured to entice horse, belonging to a military gentleman to accompany him out.The animal followed him at last, but the thief would appear to havq lost control of him, because lie was found wandering through the streets the next morning. It might be supposed tl/at the horse broke loose, but a lady who liyes in the adjoining house, heard the thief enticing him out, but being alone she could pot render any assistance.Stoves.—Attention is directed to the sale of a choice assortment of Coal and Wood Stoves, to | take place this morning at 11 World, May llth, 1862, in order to call the attention of our readers to this youthful prodigy : Willie Barnesmore Pape is going to be famous. Not because he is an intelligent lad just eutering upon his teens, and can play pretty difficult piano-forte Music ; not because he may be turned into a “sensation” for the benefit of speculators.No.The simplest statement that can be made in support of the proposition we have laid down is, that he is a musical genius. The poet must be horn—likewise the musician.Training may produce the gymnast or a circus rider, never an artist of the pure stamp. While we may question the advantage that Master Willie may derive from being introduced thus early to the public, we must congratulate the latter party upon the substantial pleasure that will surely spring from the acquaintance.Willie has been devoted to his instrument for upward of seven yea s, yet he may with impunity match his facile execution, his brilliant touch, his taste, his comprehension of the resources of both the instrument itself and the compositions which he interprets ; he may, we repeat, fearlessly match these gifts, or acquirements as the case may be, against men who have studied twenty-seven years or more, and who have, out of cour-i tesy to their age and brass, been awarded stand-! ing room in a corner of the popular heart.Comparisons are dangerous, and we are somewhat timid of danger, hence no names shall be brought uo for the purpose of making distinctions between the professional worth of their owners and the juvenile pianist. We have listened to Willie’s rendition of Gottschalk’s “Last Hope,” Thaiherg’s variations on the “Prayer” from “Moses,” the final of Webers concerto in A minor, “La Stra-niera,” by Thalberg, some different effusions by Litsz, and portions of the most admired works of Beethoven and other classic writers. All were played with accuracy and great skill, and from memory alone. He himself will play them better five or ten years hence, but not a dozen others will be found to surpass him.His repertory' is quite extensive. It is but six months since Master Pape attained to the dignity of reaching his octaves, consequently we are not to look for startling effects founded upon their use.Still, his power in this direction is beginning to show itself.A surprising little feat has been developed by him, consisting of an eccentric arrangement of the melodies “Hail Columbia” and “Yankee Doodle,” the former played with the right hand and the latter with the left. The task is much more difficult than that which Gottschalk has chosen when combining tnese same airs.Master Pape seems gifted with the power possessed by Thalberg for ingeniously carrying out a definite melody by the mere use of the thumbs, while the fingers on either hand supply the bass notes and brilliant treble variations.why he endeavoured top be had no right
