minent Jesuit priests in the world, ; and a brother of the late Cardinal Vaughan, died here today.Several years ago he toured through parts of Canada, Alaska and the United States and later lectured in Japan, where he addressed the House of Peers.Father Vaughan became ill two or three months ago at Sheffield but recovered sufficiently to be removed to the Jesuit College at Putney.! There he was able to get about in a rolling chair. The famous priest was bedridden ; only three days before the end.His f brothers in the Society of Jesus were around his bedside when he died peacefully at eight o’clock this morn-| ing.Father Vaughan first came into prominence in the latter part of the ! nineteenth century by taking a conspicuous part in the civic as well as religious life of Manchester. In 1901 he went to London and became an active worker among the poor at Westminster and in the east end slums. As a preacher it was his fortune to attract to his sermons and addresses in various parts of Europe all sorts of men, including King Edward VII.He was Catholic preacher at the Eucharistic Congress held at Montreal in 1910.The next year he lectured in various parts of the United States and Canada, later crossing the Pacific to speak before Was- \\ ada and Imperial Universities of Tokio. Before leaving for China he addressed the House of Peers and | ladies of Society. In the war his fervid utterances ; brought down upon him attacks of his brother Jesuits in Germany. It was his contention that the Germans j “did not play the game” in fighting the Three years ago ho assailed the fashions then prevailing in women’s gowns. When the Irish hunger strikers came into prominence he contended that they were deliberately committing suicide.Father co-operative pact between Governmental Conservatives and the Lloyd Georgian National Liberals, which yesterday appeared to be gaining strength, today seemed near a smash-up that may force Lloyd George to really carry out his threat to “spread the war” and wage a bitter fight to the finish with the men who brought about his I downfall. One trouble seems to be that Conservative candidates have bob- I bed up against those running under the Lloyd George banner in certain constituencies where the latter had regarded themselves as safe from Tory attacks.Lloyd George is represented as being indignant, and as contemplating the carrying out of his threat if the Conservative party does not withdraw' some of the candidates already entered against his followers.Others feel sure that he will really “spread the war” with vigor should the die-hards put up any more candidates against the National Liberals. At this time the Lloyd Georgians have about 160 candidates in the field, and they are reported to have 250 others in reserve.WILL LET LOOSE RESERVES.It is said to be Lloyd George’s intention to let loose these reserves against the Conservatives unless his demands are met.The co-operative pact—a sort of “you leave us alone in this district and we won’t both you in that district,” understanding—first attracted attention through the anger of the die-hards at the prospect of a return to Coalition rule under the aegis of a newr government. To combat this dissatisfaction the Central Conservative Association announced that in reality no pact had been reached, but that each constituency wag at liberty to adopt whatever candidate it chose.Since that announcement National Liberals and Conservatives have been opposing one another in districts where they v’ere believed to have reached a non-interference understanding.TRYING TO COME TO AGREEMENT.The Times says that Lloyd George is still trying to come to an undersfhnding with Unionist headquarters, but that paper thinks the Unionists will find it impossible to make the arrangements Lloyd George desires, even if they wished to do so, because the constituencies from which Lloyd
