[" Sherbrooke Daily Record Established 1897.SHERBROOKE, QUE., SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 1921 Twenty-Fifth Year.MINERS THREATEN TO TAKE NATIONAL ACTION Queen Mary To Accompany King On Trip To Ireland MINERS FAVOR A CONTINUANCE OF COAL STRIKE, AND NATIONAL WALKOUT IS NOW THREATENED Subsidy of Ten Million Pounds from Government Likely to Lapse\u2014Lloyd George States Offer Cannot Remain Open After Tomorrow Night\u2014Miners\u2019 Executive Endeavoring to Get Support from Other Unions\u2014Two-thirds Majority Required for Continuance of Strike Was Exceeded by 20,000 Votes.(Associated Press Despatch) LONDON, June 18.\u2014The striking British coal miners who decided by ballot, yesterday, against accepting the owners\u2019 settlement offer, this morning were given one more day in which to take the settlement steps which will assure them of receiving the ten million pounds subsidy from the Government to apply on wages.The action of the miners\u2019 executive committee in opening negotiations for the support of other unions, however, indicated that the subsidy offer will be allowed to lapse.Mr.Lloyd George replying today to the notification given him by Prank Hodges, the miners\u2019 secretary, of the result of the ballot, stated that the Government had no option but to make final its decision that the ten million pounds offer couid not remain open after tomorrow night.This gave an additional day for the miners' leaders to consider the offer as the Government's offer was originally timed to expire tonight.The two-thirds majority required for continuance of the coal strike was exceeded by over 20,000 votes.Government time limit within which the State grant of ten million pounds must be accepted expires today.The miners\u2019 ballet stands now' 432,511 against abandoning the strike, to 183,827 in favor of doing so.The men\u2019s leaders are placed in a difficult and anxious position by this vote and have not yet decided what course to take.The executive committee of the Miners\u2019 Union, which met this morning to consider the coal strike situation, decided to ask all the trades unions affected by the wage dispute to meet the miners\u2019 representatives at an early date with the object of taking national action with the miners to secure their mutual demands.Secretary Hodges, of the Miners, said this implied, a general strike if the other unions agreed.The members of the miners' committee left for their respective districts after the meeting had adjourned indefinitely.The committee will not reassemble, it was said, until developments arise or the members are eaiied together by their officials.Many thousands of miners who did not participate in the balloting, the result of which was announced yesterday as decidedly against acceptance of the owners' settlement dfîéfras well as others who voted in favor of acceptance, are preparing to resume work Monday in response to notices posted at several pitheads announcing that the works would open tomorrow night according to advices from mining centres today.In Warwickshire two coliieiies already are working while in the northern portion of the Nottinghamshire district and in the Midlothian district, 1toe men are declared to be preparing to resume work.***** ***** ***** PROSPECTIVE SETTLEMENT OF THE COTTON STRIKE.* * * * & * * * * * * * * * * *, refused to sign the agree- * *\tment until it had been ap- * *\tproved by their\tmembers\tin\t* *\tvarious districts.\tThe\tmills\t* *\twill remain cioscd.\t* *\t* & it ;ifc vfc àb &¦$£, it, & it ib TJC< TbT uN Txf TTV TXT 'T' TTs tit tXT 'X» Tjfv Txr JXf rjv (Associated Press Despatch.)
