[" Sherbrooke Daily Record.Established 1897 SHERBROOKE, QUE., FRIDAY APRIL 25, 1913.ONE CENT IDE TRAGEDY AT TIVERTON Inquest Was Adjourned to Allow Autopsy to be 115 LIVES LOST THEORIES ADVANCED AS TO CAUSE OP FRANK CROSS’ DEATH.THREE MEN ARE HELD.(Special Staff Correspondence) Ulverton, April 25.—In the sad case of Frank Cross’ death, as already reported in Thursday’s Record, Coroner Dr.Larue, of St.Germain, arrived on the scene about 4 o’clock in tiie afternoon and at once proceeded to select a jury, which was chosen as follows : Messrs.Jas.Bothwell (foreman), Roy Husk, Geo.Mooney, Z.Lefebvre, Jos.Gagnon, William Rick and A.Cote.Having been duly sworn, the examination of the body by coroner and jury, accompanied by the physician, Dr.Jos.Garon, of L’Avenir, who was called to attend the unfortunate man, was proceeded with. After much discussion it was decided that an autopsy should he made.Dr.John Hayes, of Richmond, was called upon to do this.VISITED SCENE OF TRAGEDY.The coroner and jury, besides many others, then went to the riyerside.where the fighting took place.Dr.Garon pointed out several places where blood could be faintly seen, although much more marked and plain when he visited the spot in the morning. It was pointed out that the empty and broken whiskey bottles to lie seen that morning had disap-p.eared.Approaching the river to the right, near the water’s edge, a small pile of brush and wood showed that a lire had be.n burning for some time. There is a space of possibly two rods of clear ground to the water, and on the left small thick bushes.A few yards in this thicket, not more than ten or twelve feet, the imprint in the soft ground showed plainly that a man had stopped there and placed his feet firmly, as though forced to do so.A part of a watch chain, with fob attached, was found. The initials plainly traced on the fob were “H.E.I!.” This was supposed to he the property of Herbert Bogie.ADVANCED A THEORY.Mr.W.E.Mclver, advocate, of Richmond, expressed his opinion that it was possible that certain wounds on the deceased man’s head could have been caused by his falling and striking certain small stubs where hushes had been cut alongside where it is alleged the quarrelling took place.INQUEST ADJOURNED.The coroner then discharged the jury until Saturday at 1 o’clock p.m.when the inquest will be resumed.THREE PERSONS IMPLICATED.As already stated, three persons were implicated by the widow of Frank Cross as being the cause of her husband's death. It must, in justice to those persons, be said that in no way have they given those in charge of the case any trouble, nor have they tried to make their escape. Two of them, who returned to their home at Lisgar on Wednesday night, did not know that the said Frank Cross had died until informed of the fact by Mr.Roy Husk, who was sent to ask them to appear before the coroner, which they most readily agreed to do and were soon upon the spot.SAYS THEY PARTED IN FRIEND LY MANNER.One of these parties, speaking to the Record, maintained that they parted in a friendly manner from Frank Gross at his home, shaking hands, and received from him an invitation to again make a visit, and that he walked into his owij.home.THREE TAKEN IN CHARGE.The three young men in question were taken in charge by Chief of Polie,.B.Chart rand, of Richmond, and Mr.James Boast, as special assistant, to have them appear at the adjourned inquest on Saturday.Chief of Police Ohartrand is doing all in his power to make the young men comfortable at Richmond during their stay.FUNERAL TO DAY.The coroner gave permission for the funeral to he held to day (Friday), which will take place leaving the house at 2 p.m., thence to the Methodist Church.Rev.Mr.Sehagei.of Ulverton, will conduct the service, assisted by Rev.G.H.Cradk, of Melhoucne.THE DECEASED.The late Frank Cross was the see ond son of Mr.and Mrs.John Cross, who are still living. He leaves, be Hides a wife and six children, three brothers and four sisters.Cue brother mid sister are in the Canadian West.Cue brother is in Vermont, and the others live in this vicinity.SYMPATHY OF NEIGHBORS.The aged patents feel most keenly the sad affair and can hardly believe other than that their son was' the victim of a murderous attack.Much sympathy is expressed for Mrs.Bogie, the widowed mother of Herbert Bogie, (Oontlmiea on rage 6) II Up to Darkness Last Nig ht Thirty-Five Bodies Had Been Recovered MANY BODIES HAVE BEEN LOCATED BUT THEY CANNOT BE CONVEYED TO THE DISEASE WHEN HE WENT TO CALIFORNIA.Buffalo, N.Y., April 23.—Fred W.Lang, jr., of North Tonawanda, who was taken in February to Pasadena, California, suffering fronx pulmonary tuberculosis in an advanced stage, has returned, apparently cured by the Friedmann treatment. When lie left he was so weak he could hardly walk, and Dr.C.T.Orance, who attended him, said there was little hope for him.About that time Dr.Friedmann arrived in New York, and Dr.Henry Pyle, of Pasadena, was designated by the state of California to go to New York and investigate.Dr.Pyle was a personal friend of Dr.George Hyde, of Pittsburgh, a classmate of Dr.Friedmann, and through him the California doctor obtained sufficient vaccine to treat three patients. He returned to California and selected Lang as one of the patients.Lang had just suffered two hemorrhages, and was very weak.In a few days he had gained two pounds.Another injection was given, and later a third. After remaining under observation of the California doctor Lang was allowed to return to his home, near this city.He arrived a week ago apparently a well man.Yesterday Dr.0.T.Crance, who was commissioned by the State of California to make weekly examinations of the patient, said that Lang had not a symptom of tuberculosis, and was apparently absolutely cured. When Lang went to California the State Health Department made a verified statement that he was in an advanced state of tuberculosis. The last injection was given over two weeks ago.Lang has gained twelve pounds in weight since that time, and says he feels as well as ever.’When 1 was treated for the first time,” said Lang last night, “I was so bad that 1 did not care whether 1 lived or died.I had suffered two hemorrhages a few days before and was very weak.A few days after 1 received the first injection 1 gained two pounds, hut lost that weight, the, day after the second injection.Five days after 1 received the second injection I began to feel better and gained in strength.1 have continued to gain daily.” HESS TAKEN OP IN Ti COMMONS several Measures Were Advanced at Yesterday’s Sitting ANDJÜSÏRIA Action on Attitude of Montenegro Will be Considered To-Day BELIEVED KING NICHOLAS CAN BE BROUGHT TO DECISION OF EUROPE.London, Friday, April 25.— The Austro-Hungarian Government’s dispatch calling upon the powers to take action against Montenegro wilt be considered at a meeting of the ambassadors io London to-day.London opinion regarding the outlook continues optimistic. It is pointed out that the Austro-Hungarian despatch was sent under the first impression created by the fall of Scutari, and before it was made clean that the powers had unanimously decided not to let the event affect their decision that Scutari must remain Albanian, The powers will doubtless formally warn King Nicholas to that effect within a day or two.It is believed that there are means of persuasion and pressure by which, without recourse to armed coercion, Montenegro can bS brought to submit to the decision of Europe.St.Petersburg despatches report fresh demonstrations there, hut the Russian Government is checking all disorderly manifestations.According to a Vienna despatch, Cettinje telegrams announce that King Nicholas delivered a speech to the crowd, which feted him in which he said : “Scutari is Montenegro’s from to-day, ” concluding with the words, “Long live Montenegrin Scutari.” SOME SUASION FROM ROME.Rome, April 25.— Representations have been made to Montenegro, it became known yesterday, in which the attention of the Cettinje Government is called to the fact that the Balkan States have bowed to the decision of the powers, inspired by the supreme interests of Europe.Bulgaria, it was pointed out to the Montenegrin Government, had renounced lier decision to continue the movement of tier army towards Constantinople ; Servia has given up the seaport of Durazzo ; Greece had abstained from permanently occupying the town of Valona, and Montenegro must evacuate Scutari.Such a move on the part of Montenegro, it was considered here, would not imply any loss of dignity after her occupation of the city.If the European powers ceded in the matter of Scutari, it is affirmed, the other Balkan states also would have the right to realize their aspirations.T F THE AGRICULTURAL AID BILL AND HIGHWAYS BILLS ADVANCED TO THIRD READING.Ottawa, April 25.—Yesterday the House got down to business in earnest and there was more progress made on the important Government measure than has been usually seen in a week so far this session. There were no closure rules invoked—there was no necessity for them. There was just as much free speech and just as much opportunity given to criticize the action of the Government.Hon.Frank Oliver yesterday afternoon attacked the Government on the surrender of an Indian reserve at Vancouver.Hns charge was based entirely on a Vancouver newspaper clipping to the effect that the Indians were being mulcted by the British Columbia Government in the surrender of their reserve, which lies in the city limits. It was shown, in reply by Premier Borden and Hon, Robert Rogers that the surrender had not even been brought to the notice of the Dominion authorities and that it could not be coasummated until approved of by .the Dominion ad-thorities.They assured the ex-Minis-tcr that the red men would be given every possible protection and consideration. With Mr.Oliver’s breeze disposed of, the House proceeded to business.Three important measures were dealt with.A bill providing for the establishment of a Harbor Commission at Vancouver, with a view to developing that port to handle the growing Pacific commerce, passed its first stage. The Agricultural Aid Bill was allowed to pass through the committee stage, and now stands for third reading. The Highways Bill also got a second reading. It is probable that, morning sessions will be commenced soon, which means that the end of the most historic session in the history of Canada is within sight.PRIVATE BILLS.Mr.Clark (Bruce) introduced his hill to amend the Dominion Election Act, the object of which lie explained was to rescind the clause which provided for a fine of $190 for illegal voting, which might be collected by any person who chose to sue, ami.to substitute therefor a clause under which such an offence may bo punishable with a jail term of two months and not more than six months.Tiie bill was given first reading- German Officers with an advance in C.P.R.on foreign buying. Before long the tone turned weaker and when Rumely broke and continued its decline traders rushed to sell stocks all around the room. The result was a very-weak and almost demoralized market for a while. The liquidation was not extensive and in the second hour the market rallied moderately and lias since held steady as a slight recovery from the low' level. One of the most disquieting is the continued decline in investment securities.Illinois Central again making a new low record and continued weakness in Chicago and Northwestern is much commented on.St.Louis and San Francisco stock also kept on the downward movement on reiterated reports that the road has to do some financing and is expected to meet difficulty in getting the necessary funds. The market is now holding steady, but fails to rally with any vigor and activity has consideraly increased since the decline set in.Sales to noon.190,000 shares.Wheat up a cent.Cotton, steady.- fired on by both men and was unsuccessful in making an arrest.Returning to Tofield, he wired for assistance to Edmonton and four men, including Bailey and Whitley, went out on the evening train. They drove to Grassy Lake and as they approached the shack, all within seemed quiet.Suddenly a shot rang out and Bailey fell dead. When Whitley was fifteen feet from the door a firearm was suddenly thrtist out and he, too, was snot, the bullet enti.iug the thigh. He limped away before another shot was fired, but was compelled to leave •Bailey dead in front of the shack.Whitley was taken to Tofield and the other policemen are now on guard.Reinforcements have been summoned from Fort Saskatchewan and this city, and it is likely the [’lace will )>e stormed.Bailey, the dead man, has ueen on the force for five years, having been stationed at Stettler and Lac Ste.Anne as well as Edmonton. It is said that the two men wno hold the shack found a silver med il on their quarter section about a year
